Here's the deal. A very low percentage of men make 70k plus a year. There's not enough resources for the blue collar guy. Lease prices keep climbing. Eventually the common man will not be able to go hunting.
I hunt public land in Texas bc of the cost of deer leases. And the amount of idiots you run into is ridiculous. I live in south west Texas and we have good deer in this area. 40,000 deer in my county alone. But a deer lease in this area is $2500-$3500 per gun & most don’t have a deer camp anymore. We have a 13,000 acre public spot in the area and its so hard to find a place on it that people don’t hunt it or steal your blind & camera. Hunting & fishing are getting so pricey that the average family man struggling to provide for his family can’t enjoy any of it with out over spending on something.
Lease pricing going up is definitely something we’ve all noticed even if you don’t lease land you hear it from buddies $10 an acre was on the higher end in a lot of places in Alabama about 15 years ago. Now it can be tough to find a property leasing for that cheap. Prices will continue to rise until people aren’t willing to pay it.
The analogy i compare and think is applicable, i live in Michigan and our department of vehicles (DMV) used to be walk in, every office was a nightmare for years, people dreaded going to get their plates licences, titles etc..., recent years they went to appointments only and you talk about a complete 180 and better experience (not perfect but much improved). Hunting land public and private same deal. Limit the amount of hunters to points, draws or whatever "appointments analogy" that state prefers and the experience will get much better everywhere. Just my 2 cents. That day may be coming
Yeah problem with that is you are being told when you can hunt. I live half a mile from 10,000 acres of some of the best hunting land in my state. It has been open to the public for five years and I’ve never been drawn for it. 48 people a year hunt it for deer. I drive two hours from the house to hunt. I can promise you a draw and point system for all you public is not what you want.
Let’s talk about OH, IA, KS, IL, what people are talking about is all the permission land being leased out from under them forcing them on to public land that’s already over crowded. Not everyone can afford a 15,000 to 30,000 dollar lease. It’s not impossible but nearly impossible to get permission in the states I mentioned.
I agree, I’m from Kansas and had lots of private land to hunt 15 years ago. All of these people were family friends. Now all of that is leased up by out of state guys. I don’t blame the land owners I mean they would be dumb not too. It’s just irritating that the out of state guys come in and lease it out from under you. The worst part is they typically are shooting all the nice two year olds that have good potential. They shoot 115” buck and think it’s a mature giant 😂. Buck commander hasn’t helped the situation either. Adam laroches farm “E3” in the same town as me. It will never get better either is the sad thing.
Ohio and Illinois for sure but they don’t limit nonresident tags. I can’t speak for Iowa but here in Kansas it’s so much tougher than it was but it’s still possible thanks to a limited number of NR tags. We’d be completely ruined if it weren’t for the draw and we are still struggling with it in place
Everyone thinks Iowa will last forever. Iowa is still experiencing remnants of the good old days. Iowa never had a tradition of deer hunting. The deer herd in Iowa was so strong because there was little hunting pressure and good havitat in areas. The hunting pressure has increased and the herd is in decline
@JoeHuss-kx8rn I think limited draw helps but it has to be very limited. Even Iowa isn't what it used to be. We need far less people interested in hunting period.
@JoeHuss-kx8rn I know. For my whole life people have been encouraged to recruit new hunters with the hope that more hunters would ensure our hunting rights would continue. I believe more hunters have threatened our hunting rights. When we have more disrespectful hunters doing foolish things we give more for the anti hunters to point Fingers at. The more hunters the more issues, especially when we recruit hunters with no background in hunting.
I’m from southwest Mississippi. I hunt 98% public. The main issue we have in my area are people from Louisiana. I’m not talking bad about them as a whole but a majority of the ones I’ve met and witnessed. I have met some fine deer hunters from Louisiana. I’m in no way speaking on behalf of all my Cajun neighbors but we have had issues for decades of most of them absolutely slaughtering deer, sometimes way above the limit, which has caused a massive decline in population. The state always claims our deer population is at an all time high but that isn’t true in our area. Between the locals taking their share and our OOS neighbors killing off theirs, our population is hurting. And don’t get me wrong, there are locals that devastate the deer as well. I understand them wanting to come hunt Mississippi due to harder hunting conditions and lower deer populations in the lower part of Louisiana but I don’t think the deer population can’t withstand the amount taken between locals and them. The people population more than doubles during deer season. I’m not mentioning this to be greedy or blaming them to make me seem like a bad hunter. I see and take more than my share of deer. I just don’t think our part of the state can handle that amount of ppl taking that many deer a year.
Coming from west ky I wish we would go to a draw state local wmas are getting pretty ridiculous.. That being said have nothing but good things to say about the out of state guys I’ve had conversations with!
Little different for snow in PA. If its heavy they wont move for about a day. Light snow they arent bothered by it. But as soon as it stops, theyre back on their feet within an hour tops.

My fist time hunting private was this year. What a difference. The coolest thing I was told by the owner when he found all I hunt is WMA. Oh your hunting hunting I is those days when I was younger.
It is absolutely ruining my state of Ohio! Every body and there brother comes to Ohio now there is not a piece of property that you can find that’s not being hunted. I wish every Midwest state was like Iowa. If you truly want to hunt big white tails you will pick up and move to one of these states and buy ground. Other than that should be like Iowa you have to draw a tag
I agree. Dont get me wrong: I am not against people coming here to hunt but just this year in early Nov I went to a piece of public ground and I couldnt find a place because there were people from 13 different states there (on a Wednesday morning of all times). Somethings gotta change.
Ohio has some great whitetail hunting that Alabama can’t offer but Alabama has some great things to offer Ohio as well. We have lots of poisonous snakes, gators, wild boar and don’t forget about the abundance of ticks and mosquitoes. But the poison ivy itch covers all the mosquito bites usually.
Most of America wasn't fortunate enough to have ancestors to own land. I'm 3rd gen and the only thing willed to me was a shotgun and fishing poles. I'm the first person in my family that owns land. I agree with non-res draws, but I hope you truly appreciate how fortunate you are that family made incredible decisions for you to inherit land in the Midwest.
If states were to go to a draw system, they should also put a quota for how many hunters are allowed to draw from each state. I hate to pick on Alabama but in some areas in the midwest, you'll have more non resident hunters from Alabama than all other states combined. I guess, with most of their state having a late rut, they head to the Midwest for the November rut.
