  • BRK Ghost .22 High Power with 15gr pellets, still looking for the optimal speed, but it looks like I have found an answer. Shot 3 different brands of pellets at 2 different speeds in swirling wind, the results surprised me a bit.

    Round about 16 grn at around 50 m is a fantastic pellet weight for rabbits at 900 ft/ sec. I have used this on my theoben rapid long barrel at 30 ftlbs, current BRK ghost and tuned springers. Incidentally the theoben was probably the most accurate air rifle I have ever owned , over 70 shots with no reg it was brilliant. Only downside was the long barrel when out rough shooting. Try one

    Love your channel Gert. My favourite Airgun channel. Great information presented in a fun but honest style. I see no one else who tests pellets and slugs the way you do. It is amazing what a few fps can do to a guns accuracy. Unfortunately I am stuck with the UK's sub 12 limit but I can still enjoy all your content. Seasons greeting all.

      you can still test and fine tune with the hammer adjustment you can also try sizing a few of the same pellets to different sizes if you get a set from ramsbottoms about 25quid and if you find a speed and size your gun prefers you can then try lubing some it can take a couple of dozen to get the full effect of lubing though as it cleans the barrel the first few shots. i always do it with my guns

    Gert, another of your very informative, and interesting videos….The first 2 minutes and 13 seconds is a joy to hear. With such a low reg pressure, your hammer spring has to be maxed out, and with that much tension, the spring “power” has to be erratic, possibly causing more of the group spread then being caused by the wind. Recommend you bring the reg up to about 115 and adjust tension wheel for about 915 fps (or so). Great video series!

    • @AimSmall
      @AimSmall  6 місяців тому +1

      Tried that, but the hammer spring is just too heavy, currently the only way to shoot the pellets below 900fps is with a very low reg pressure, meaning the hammer spring vs.reg balance is whacked up.

      Hi Juan, no I don't own a M3, I have a M1 that has been suped up, it has everything the M3 has bar the micro adjuster. Yes I want to do a comparison, but I need to get a pellet liner first for the 700mm barrel of the FX and down tune it significantly. Both guns are setup for 50 FPE + which isn't good for pellets at all. Maybe in the new year I will get some funds to complete the comparison.

Wouldn’t it preferable for accuracy to increase the reg and decrease the hammer strength? Only a question not an advice 😅

    Fantastic, as an FX shooter, my Crown (old ST Barrel from my first mk1 Impact) loves pellets, the 15.89gr (902fps) and 18,13gr (855fps) are shot with no other setting changes, very accurate. Side note, my FX barrel does not show leading problems. Brocock has a Walther Lother barrel does not? that would be a cut groove barrel, thus sharper grooves. Good polish will help wit velocity and accuracy. Love the vids

    I shoot 177cal 10.5gr crossman ultra mags more than anything else.
    My Avenger loves them and so does my BSA R10SE.
    Iam considering buying a Ghost, Impact, RTI, or RAW.
    My biggest problem is looking at the Avenger Bullpup in 177cal. It's now on sale for $289.00 at Pyramid Air. Since most of my shooting is inside 60yards, I wonder if a higher price gun will even benefit me.
    I may just buy the Avenger Bullpup and a Hawke Vantage 3×12 40mm and call it a day.
    If the time comes that the Avenger can't be repaired cheap. I'll throw it in the trash and buy a new one.
    But to date my so called "budget" airguns have been rock solid reliable. I even have the original Umarex Gauntlet in 177cal. I adjusted the trigger and put a larger bottle on it. I've never had one problem with it. It loves 10.34 JSB.

    As others have mentioned enjoy your channel, I do think that there is something amiss with your gun. Those groups should be much better with the longer barrel. What I have noticed is that pellet weights and sizes, and quality of finish seems to vary very considerably with all makes these days. Sorting your pellets into closer group weights and sizing and even dressing the rear of the skirts will help a great deal. When you look closely at pellets these days you can see how rough they are. This makes a nonsense of published ballistic coefficients.

    • @AimSmall
      @AimSmall  6 місяців тому +1

      Couldn't agree more, I shoot the pellets and slugs straight from the tin, don't have time to weigh and sort. I takes about 3h of sorting to filter down to 200 pellets... I do however sort for competition shooting, but due to the amount of shooting I usually do, I will spend more time weighing and sorting than actually shooting. lol.

    • @philthefluter1
      @philthefluter1 5 місяців тому +1

      Fair comment but how about doing it and showing folks if it makes a difference, including cleaning pellets and barrel.

    • @AimSmall
      @AimSmall  5 місяців тому +1

      @@philthefluter1 Barrel cleaning is another issue all together, I never clean my HW100, Daystate Pulsar or FX barrels, the same goes for my AA EV2. I however do need to clean the Ghost regularly as it is very aggressively grooved and lead stays behind. If you shoot benchrest then weighing and measuring pellets is a non negotiable, I shoot HFT and FT, weighing the pellets is more to make sure the very odd pellets gets thrown out. If you are looking for perfection then weighing and sizing becomes very technical. A pellet with a deviation in weight of up to 5% won't make much of a difference up to 50m. If you want to shoot 100m then the weight becomes more important.

    Hi Gertjie, 😁, eks ook geen ekspert nie maar in my ervaring is dat n loop met n stadige twistrate het jy meer spoed nodig om die pellet te stabiliseer.

    • @AimSmall
      @AimSmall  6 місяців тому +1

      Slugs ja, nie pellets nie, die pellet kort net 'n bietjie twist as hy die loop verlaat, daarna is die shape soos 'n pluimbal en stabiliseer hy self. Dus is die twist rate op pellets nie 'n groot issue nie. die crown en spoed speel 'n groter rol. Ek het dit veral gesien in die FX se verskillende twist rates, die beste pellets skieter was die oorspronklike 1:24 en 1:22 twist rate liners, die nuwe 1:18 is nie so akkuraat met pellets nie.

  • @cl_foto
    @cl_foto 6 місяців тому +1

    Push those pellets to 930fps - 30ft lb and you will be rewarded. 30ft lb is a sweet spot for .22 with most guns. I always tune to the recommended sweet spot then adjust from there if slightly off, but it won’t be. 😉 Greak power to shot count ratio also

    • @AimSmall
      @AimSmall  6 місяців тому

      In a previous video they started to open up at about 915fps. I will have to redo that experiment, might be that the harmonics was just out of whack, maybe if I push them slightly faster theywill stabilize again. Thanks for the heads up, I did shoot one unbelievable grouping at 1030fps, but wasn't able to repeat it, I thin kat that speed the LW barrel grabs the lead and it will require cleaning every 10 shots or so.

    Spare yourself some lunacy, and put windage flags at your target so you can see it through the scope as you're e aiming, also have another one in-between you and the target. it's nice to have it so you can see this one with your left eye so you don't have to get off your cheek. I make simple flags out of the pull strip in trash bags they work great and are very long to work with. It's not uncommon for them both to be telling a different story, but at least they will explain what you might not be able wrap your head around. Then use the language the flags are speaking to compensate for each shot and see how your groups result as opposed to just point shooting and having the wind win. I think this is what makes shooting air guns fun, deciding how to hit the mark in a matrix of opposition. You are never going to have these flags to help when hunting unless you bait, but at least it helps to settle a lot of frustration and build memory for different distance based on intuition from experience. It was the best advice that I can say I followed, the windage flags, the rest is up to you. I couldn't believe that the three flags I have more often than not are never in agreement, just because the way the air disperses when it hits a wall or an object. It's the path of least resistance. Even when you think you know what the wind is doing, the Flags will tell you, you are wrong. I think that's why you here about people reading the mirage, like the haze you can see on top of hot pavement on the highway, as an example.

    • @ravenshield7823
      @ravenshield7823 6 місяців тому +1

      No problem. I just wanted to add that I suspend the flag "thrash bag strap" with fishing line from a long stick at an angle or from a branch. It's actually kind of a pain in the ass to set one up because if it's not a long stick at an angle, the flag will wrap around the stick. So, like a good couple of Shepphards hooks or alternatively, take a good diameter pipe you can hammer into the ground at an angle and the put the stick into that since jamming a long stick in the ground at an angle isn't as easy as it sounds. You kind of have to get creative since the ones they use at benchrest comps are mega expensive, but having it suspended gives a true read. Obviously, the weight of the string you suspend it with and the size of the flag you use will determine how active it will be, either way, as long as it's consistent you will know your flags soon enough. I know it's not rocket science but my first attempt I just put the flagging around a stake, and it will wiggle and stuff, but it won't really tell you what you want to know, it's useless like this, it needs to be hung in some way, even off a clothesline.

    Also (follow up to first comment) it always gets me when I see group testing then the shooter keeps trying different pellets/slugs. Really you should clean the barrel between changing ammo and re-lead up! Otherwise you’re not getting an accurate prediction for that pellet, the barrel is being mucked up by leading the barrel to multiple pellet profiles. It’s luck of the draw if it works out.

    • @AimSmall
      @AimSmall  6 місяців тому +1

      Especially with aggressively groved barrels, I did polish the barrel intensely to get rid of some of the aggressive groving, but not enough. You are off course 100% correct, removing the ghosts barrel, shroud etc. is not a fun job. Marno Denner is a Daystate ASF, he NEVER cleans his Ghost/Daystate barrels, polishes them and treats them, they are almost smooth twist. Funny enough, my HW100's don't mind at all, I can shoot different makes and models all day long, the moment I put the JSB 8.44 gr back in the barrel they 1 hole. I made a video about that (slug testing 177 again), you will see that this is the case with the HW100 and AA EV2. No leading in the barrel at all. In short, it hugely depends on the actual barrel, Steyr and LW barrels are very sensitive to fouling and needs to be cleaned often. Thanks for the advice, always welcome to have a fellow shooter with a passion for the sport.

      Yup, the gun isn't setup correctly, the hammer spring is way to hard, that is why I can only change the speed with the regulator, well spotted. (The power wheel only has an incluence from 120bar regulator pressure and higher). If the wind is constant they do group, even at 60m, but it all depends on what your definition of a group is. lol. The challenge I face where I live is that the wind is NEVER constant, it changes every shot... and there will always be human error, the gun isn't clamped into a vice. The whole idea of the video was to determine if the increased speed will assist in better groupings, and it did. A lot. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Much appreciated.
