- Hi everyone. I was feeling a little emotional about Mark tonight & just felt compelled to share a few of my good memories of him. Hope everyone is having a fantastic week! God bless!
Thank you Matt. You should feel proud to have known Shoestring personally. I know the memories that you have of him will be with you forever. God bless you Matt.
I'm missing him too I wish there was a way to bring him back his stay here was way too short we need more people like him he was 1 in a million nobody can take his place rip shoestring
Thanks for sharing more memories of Shoestring, Matt.
RR it's my pleasure to share these memories of him. I believe he'd of loved it.
Thank you for sharing your memories of Shoestring. You and he were such great friends. Kindred spirits and it truly showed when you were together.
I know he would tell me the same thing, that he didn't understand why people had such a fascination with his lifestyle. I told him the same thing that you did. That people are stuck in jobs, have bills to pay and families and sometimes everyone has always dreamed of getting away and living the life and being free like he was.
I miss him too. We would talk often, several times a day. He'd tell me what he was up to and where he was going to go to next. I was truly honored that he entrusted me with that information.
I was truly blessed to have him as a friend. I have good days when I remember something funny that we talked about or a funny picture he'd sent. But I have days when I miss him so much and it seems like a bad dream that I can't wake up from.
If you ever want to just talk and swap Shoestring stories just drop me a line. Prayers being sent that the Lord will bring you comfort in the days ahead and that all your memories will bring you happiness. Take care and God Bless
So sorry Loretta. We're all heartbroken. Can't imagine how you and Matt feel.
@@tomsdotter3228 thank you.
Shoestring will be missed for sure. Was my favorite Tramp to watch.
@@Chris-pg8dl …the hobo works and wanders, the tramp dreams and wanders, and the bum drinks and wanders
You were a good friend. Thanks for the memories and sorry for you loss!
Shoestring was the true embodiment of freedom and living life on your own terms. However his spirit moved him, that's how he traveled on the rails to destinations all across this great country. We got to see a man who had a very unique perspective on life, and it drew us in no matter where he was or what he did. Whether it was traveling by boxcar, paddling his inflatable canoe across Lake Boone, cooking up a delicious meal at a campsite, visiting friends, tours of his apartment, etc. -- you were absolutely transfixed by everything he said and did and everywhere he went, no matter how innocuous it might seem to most other people. We who appreciated what Shoestring brought to us through the magic of UA-cam knew better -- that this man was a gift from God with a soul of gold. Why God decided to take him when he still had so much more living to do, your guess is as good as mine, but I suppose we'll all find out in due time. May his soul be at peace on the other side. In the meantime, may we all who are still here take a cue from his kindness and learn to be more civil with each other. He would've wanted it that way.
Matt....we all miss String, all be it in our own way, and talking about memories helps the pain off loss diminish, String was a "one of a kind", and the fact we have all those videos to remind us of what a wonderful, kind person he is, helps keep that sadness in perspective. People like String will never be forgotten, and that is how it should be.....Thank you Matt for sharing your memories with all of us. Shoestring is gone...but will never be forgotten.
Really enjoyed this video of Shoestring memories !! Been following him for 7 or 8 years. Looked forward to every video he posted.
Matt, Thank you so very much for your memories of Mark, I truly miss his antics of the rails and all of the sights as he traveled around America. Mark was a adventurer, he loved the open air, I remember him speaking he did not like being closed up in his house or closed up in a Grainer. He wanted to travel with the wind in his face and then as the trained slowed down, he would bail-off to go and make camp, cook over and open fire, having steaks, or even sausage. The free spirit of having no one standing over him telling him what to do, like he experienced in the military. He was truly pioneer of his time. Mark will always be remember. Thanks again Matt, for sharing.
Your explanation of Mark’s appeal is spot-on. This made me smile about him for the first time in a few weeks. Thank you.
Awesome! Glad my memories of him made you smile!
God Bless you Shoestring's friend Matt! Keeping his memories alive!
Mark wanted to live on his own terms. That is why he was drawn to train hopping and also why he loved the free spirited lifestyle of Alaska.
Thanks for the video Matt I know that you miss your friend shoestring was one of a kind for sure.
Would Love this if i could, but can only leave a "thumb up/like" and a real comment, thank you so much for sharing your memories with this great man.
What neat memories. I think Shoestring would have been on the ships to discover what was across the ocean or the wagon trains heading west. He seemed to be a sponge for knowledge.
Matt, Thank you for sharing these stories. It was easy to see from your videos with Shoestring that y'all were great friends.
We all miss him dearly. Dude was one of a kind and there will never be another. Please continue to share more. We love hearing about him.
Thanks for sharing. We sure do miss Shoestring.
Thanks Matt for what you share. Our hearts are still broken.
Yes, thank you!
He was a man without judgement. I Loved him too. Best of everything to you ! ❤️ and 🙏
Why we loved Shoestring... Well it starts with the name - cmon it's just so cool. Yes much of it was the adventure he would take us on in every video and the vicarious feeling of freedom to be along for the ride. But he just had a way about him. He made you feel like you were his friend sitting next to him in a railcar or setting up camp. Or that baritone voice with the Texas drawl that seemed like you were listening to some old-timer in a western. And he'd always try to impart wisdom and insight where ever he could - like explaining how a wild flower in Alaska tastes like apple. And of course he always was saying or doing something funny. Love the arcade bro... takes me back to glorious days of a misspent youth.
Two gallons of water! A good bucket . And a backpack. We just wanted to watch the videos. When he would make them.
Thanks Matt for sharing more stories about him.. He was truly a unique person.. he was a great story teller.. I think that was another thing that people were drawn to about him. He had so much knowledge of trains and many other things that everyone was just fascinated at listening to him tell about.. Keep your chin up and the videos going.. 👍🏻
loved his videos he had a great attitude towards life just kept going no matter what he was dealing with never complained just kept rollin hobo shoestring train kepi a rollin
He was a real trooper! What ya saw is what ya got!
Ah nice memories Matt. Every time you share we get to know a bit more about Shoestring & that is so lovely. ❤😊

We miss him to but nothing compared to your feeling of loss. Stay strong and Keep him in your heart. I think Shoestring is smiling down on you sir. God Bless you!
Matt, thx for sharing. After I discovered Shoestrings` channel, I was hooked LOL. I went all the way back to his first video & watched every one till I was caught up to his newest video.
Shoestrings` mind never stopped. He would describe one thing & the next & the next. 99% of us never met or knew him personally like you did brother. But 100% of us loved Shoestring & miss him in our own way. I love all of your videos & will continue my support
of your channel, Keep those trains & stories coming ! Can`t wait for your next one !
Cheers!
Thank you for sharing. My draw to him was how he could just take off and go anywhere he wanted. He wasn’t tied to one spot. He was truly fascinating.
It's a pleasure to meet and know you through Shoestring Matt. That old Hobo touched all of are hearts in a special way Keep showing us the trains we will watch. And glad you let your feelings out to us buddy. Brian from Colorado ✌️🤠
Hey Matt! Trying this again. Being new to Shoestring’s channel, and now yours, I have to say you’ve nailed it, in this video. Being travel restricted, It’s going places you know you’ll never see in this lifetime, through his gift/talent of videography & storytelling. Or maybe places you’ve been, and wished you could’ve met him. I’m grateful I’ve got a lot of catching up to view! I’m sure you do miss him, as many others will. Keep your videos coming, he’ll always be with you. That’s what your memories are made of. You two are something else when it came to his rail adventures! So thank you HS & Matt for the shares. ✌️🛤️🫶👍
Thanks Matt, for sharing your stories and times with Shoestring. Hurts to lose a friend. Have faith and trust in God. 🙏
Thank you, Matt. The world turns on a delicate balance. Mark wasa huge part of keeping that balance. I had thouggt many times about suggesting a book of Shoestring stories, but thought it would happen anyway. I couldnt stop crying when I heard Mark took his journey Home. Mark Shoestring Hobo has been one of the best parts of this world and all of us. It is truly the end times.
Great Video Matt. Keeping the Memory of Shoestring alive. Love It, Brother.
Thank you
Love hearing all these memories. Keep his spirit alive 🚂🇺🇸❤️
Love the reminiscing and memories! A True Hobo Spirit is the stories!
I remember Shoe saying you & him were trying to get a ride in together?!
@@rpdobbler we have a wheat farm roughly 40 mile south of Spokane in a very unique farming region called the Palouse. We corresponded before he got Covid and he wanted to catch out to Spokane during the summer and come down and ride on the combine. I told him in return I wanted to catch a ride with him then from Spokane somewhere just for the fun of it! Unfortunately, I think that Covid really took a toll on his health and body and we weren’t ever able to make it happen…..
Straight from the heart Matt thanks man please keep the Shoestring thoughts coming
Cheers for this and RIP Mark…listening to Skynyrds ‘Railroad Song’ now ❤
Really enjoying your recollections. Thank you for sharing 👍🏻
Thank you. Glad my memories are helping everyone.
I miss him so much. I’ve held back watching all the tribute videos that have popped up. It just hurts. I love your videos. You were truly a great friend of his. You’re a great guy. He mentioned the big trip to me as well.
I miss him too. He would often text me late at night knowing I’d probably be awake. Yeah, he was excited about that trip and that low cost train pass that would take him everywhere in Europe.
He was SUPER pumped about going there! I was calling him International Hobo Shoestring for a while...lol
Someone mentioned about his peaceful vibe and I agree with that. Shoestring was so easy going about everything and that came across his videos as peaceful and calming to the viewer. And I loved all his knowledge about everything to do with trains and his way of sharing that knowledge with us all. He taught me a lot! Sure do miss him. I'm sorry you are feeling so low right now Matt. Thanks for sharing your thoughts about him with us. It's therapeutic for all.
I'm glad my memories are helping everyone.
Hi Matt, Thanks for the special anadote stories on Shoestring. I watched for years and Greatly Miss His Posts. I learned things I never thought possible about the railroad system, the routes, the yard systems, the lifestyle itself. Hobo verbage, tags, even rail differences in height or weight according to use, But I really admired the genuine modest persona, and honest humility, and kindness he projected!! It was something I looked forward to intensely, and really can't believe he's gone to that Golden Cadillac Grainer to Ride Forever more in the Heavens! No more cold midnight rides, no bulls from witch to hide, Yes he's finally "Caught the Westbound" as Hobos Say, But I think He was in that Ray of Sunshine I Saw The Other Day!!....RIP Mark, We'll meet another Way Hopefully some Day. 💔 Tom from Bethlehem, Pa.
Thanks for sharing your memories with those of us who didn’t know him personally, but we’re intrigued with his consummate knowledge of trains and survival skills in the wilderness. Now it’s your turn to carry the torch, not to replace him, but to honor him with all you gleaned from your friendship! So grateful you were such a good, dependable friend to Shoestring! May God bless you for being such a loyal friend. That is rare these days.
Thank you for sharing Shoestring memories. I never met him and only watched a few of his videos over the years but man, I was worried and later grieving for him like he was my best friend it was just weird for me. 🤷♀️ Anyways, I saved some of his pics and had them put on a magic mug so I could start every morning with him. It’s made me happy and has helped me not feel as sad. Just an idea for anyone like me that finds it hard to let go.
Its the peace and quiet and calmness that drew me to his videos, quiet area with birds chirping, lots of grass, no people, if you live in a chaotic environment this was very theraputic. Also his demenour was calming, unlike lot of youtubers who spazz talk and hand wave for excitment , he had a peaceful vibe. Then the subject matter, always talking about something interesting or pointing out some fact, he gave me an appreciatation for nature and even the rail system i never had before. Sure i could have watched an elaborate documentary on trains or a HD nature show but it wouldnt have been the same thing. That being said i get the freedom thing, when I lived outside before I had someone say the same thing about wanting to drop it all and live free and they really respected what we did. And to be honest its not that free, we really rely on the kindness and generosity of people like you and in the end are more relying on society then ever and it wears on you, having to find water all the time, or a place to charge, some people dont mind but I got sick of it, id also get sick of the same job everyday so i get that part, but thats maybe where your in the wrong job, not making yourself happy that you'd wish you were living free like a hobo. And maybe you would but I couldnt. I think freedom is liking what you do, then you dont "have to" wake up, you "want to" wake up for whatever youre doing. Anyway thanks for the memories Matt, you were one of my favourite Shoestring friends on the show. Maybe we can do a new epside with AI Shoestring one day? jk
Thank you. I like hearing your stories. Take care.
A1, Excellent I wish I could have meet him. thank you very much, Matt.👍
Hold onto these memories my friend! ❤love hearing your stories
You're right, Matt! Shoestring's humility is part of his charm.
Nice to hear you encouraged his confidence re: people's interest in him. He's a very interesring person! He possessed such a wealth of knowledge.
I just watched an Alaska video where he expounded about how the wind direction in Alaska indicated wind activity elsewhere, cause/behavior of waters, cloud formations, glaciers, how certain Alaskan plants blooming at particular times predicted upcoming snow; just so much knowledge of weather, cultures, geography, etc.
Thank you Matt for sharing some of your memories with us.
I wished I could have meet him, Thank you for the memories of shoestring and god bless
I remember when he went to Alaska right after covid, and he was talking about how mean people had become and he just wanted to get away. I can relate. Watch "a thousand miles from nowhere" by Dwight Yoakam. Good train song!
Cool video. just watched it
Checked out the Crowder vid and checked some of the comments.
Got a good chuckle when they zoomed back revealing the railyard.
Hobo! 👍🤠
Yeah it was hilarious! I actually sat & showed that to Shoestring! 😆 🤣 😂
Matt When I started watching his videos a few years ago I couldn't believe people still ride trains. I could see if it was 1900s but not today. Mark knew so much about trains. Iam glad he got to see other states in this county.
I hope they keep his videos up on UA-cam. Thanks for sharing!
Yep, pretty amazing he could still pull it off in 2024
Matt you were always a good friend to Mark,I love hearing your stories about Mark,I see it in your face and like all of us we are missing Mark..hang in there buddy
Shoestring was a real person. very honest and caring and he showed it..
I can hear the loneliness in your voice.its hard to move on from a tragedy especially when it happens so fast.i lost my auld buddy to self destruction two years ago, he could sing the highwayman as good as nelson.chris.waylon.cash..death is a very final happening, there's no back, try to dwell on the good times.the jokes.and the laughter u all shared.time will heal.you owe it to him to keep going..good luck
Can only imagine how much you miss Hobo because I only knew him through his channel and I think about him dang near everyday. Find myself wanting to check and see if he has a new video on the channel. Hobo and yourself appeal to a lot of people because your just down to earth good people that share a lot of neat information. Thanks for your occasional videos on you and Hobo and y’all’s fun times. Matt , your the kind of dude most people would like to have a beer with and just hang out. God bless and praying for good days ahead .
Thanks for sharing your shoestring stories with us. His train riding videos were cool to watch the landscape going by. His train knowledge was interesting to learn from, and hearing him tell his stories of traveling around was entertaining too
Thanks for sharing Matt. Enjoyed it.
Thanks for sharing the stories Matt! I sure am gonna miss him!
you were a good friend of his, we enjoy you sharing the stories of him, he was a good person who shared his world with us hes truly missed. thank you
Good morning Brother Great Video I was so looking forward to meeting him in person someday when were finally in SC Again I felt privileged that talked back to me Have a Dynamite 🧨 day
I didn't know shoestring but I do miss him still watching his videos. Rip shoestring.
I invited him to stop by if he had the chance. I live right next to a crew change spot up here in Olympia Wa. I knew it was far fetched, but I also knew he had been by here before.
He gave me a “ like” on my comment.
I wasn’t holding out for him, but thought it would be badass if he happened by!
I pray for strength for you,
Stay strong brother.
I know its a rough time.
Shoestring overseas would've been awesome to see.
It would.
I jumped trains for 2 years so I related to shoestrings Videos and to be honest I had plans to ride the rails later on in my life now that I have my kids I can't do that, I met Shoestring one time when he rolled through my area it was great and an honor to have met him. But as you mentioned in your video he was for a lack of a better explanation he was livelier than on his videos in person. Definitely miss him but he's not as far as we may realize cause we have memories of him and the great man he was and always will be.
cheers matt , hobo was an excellent man . lake bakal looks brilliant.
Thank you Matt. Still thinking about that Hobo Shoestring tag I saw for the first time at Harpers Ferry, West Virginia on a utility cabinet near the train station, some 4 years ago. So many great memories of his freedom and adventures. I always worried about his health however. 🙏
Love shoestring story time.
Thank you so much. So sorry for your loss.
I miss my friend, I watched his videos and it was amazing how he did that.
He was really a special Person wish I could have met him 🚂🚃🚃💕
Oh cool I'm from South west Ohio 1 county east of Indiana, thanks for another memory of Mark / Shoestring we all should take this into consideration Shoestring is Resting now we all wish he were still here of course, like passed on relatives miss his uploads he's with us in spirit for certain nobody ever really die's our spirit's are eternal he's in the other Realm enjoying golden Rail's with no worries or pain 🌹🕊️🪽🙏🚂🇺🇸
Hey man my heart goes out to you for your loss. It still must sting really bad, thanks for sharing such awesome memories.
Thank you Matt! Love hearing the stories! I watch Shoestring videos every chance i get. R.I.P. Hobo Shoestring!
I'm really glad you've been sharing these personal moments you shared with him. His passing has just hit differently for me, it's just super deflating and heartbreaking. I've been brainstorming a tribute for him. I'm an O-scaler model railroad enthusiast, and want to memorialize him on my layout in a couple different ways.
Glad my stories help
Hey Matt
Thankyou for continuing to share your memories and love of Shoestring. The guy was so interesting and you got to be pretty close. I can see how much his friendship meant to you. I’ve watched many more of his videos and hope they don’t take his channel down.
Have the authorities figured out what may have happened ?
Bless you Matt for your heartfelt expressions and willingness to share them.
God Bless
I've only been watching Shoestring a couple of months or more and really took to him right away, my wife as well. When I heard he was missing, I first assumed he was lost out on the rails somewhere and it hit me hard when I found out he was gone. I'd a really liked to've met him and I appreciate your friendship with him. I know he was a praying man, I hope to meet him in Heaven so, I'll say, Rejoice In Peace, Hobo Shoestring. See ya down the line.
PS, I hopped freight trains a few times and I could relate to his love of it and the feeling it gave him. Been more than 40 years since I rode, I have train hoppin' dreams every once in awhile.
Good job, thank you
Hi Matt again I been hearing about him being gone been following him for like 3 years, I still don't know how he died, I guess nobody's mentioned it yet❤❤❤
These videos are therapeutic for all of us Matt. Thanks for posting. I feel a lot of his fans really did not expect him to be out putting videos as much. In fact, I really felt he should just start enjoying his semi-retired life as we all knew he had health concerns. His apartment life was cool as was his apartment itself whenever he shared it in videos with us. While this apartment living was normal to the majority of us, Shoestring spend decades sleeping outside and on trains. So this raises the questions of how he perceived his new reality and how it may of given him another type of stress. The fact is, he was a legend and will remain one. The populace are always intrigued by people as you said; who live outside the norm as he did. And he did it with dignity and without hurting anyone. God Bless him..
Glad my memories are helping everyone....I've got a ton of fun ones I can't wait to share with everyone.
@@rpdobbler Sounds great 👍
You never know what you’ve got until it’s gone. Hopefully he knew what a good friend you were to him.
Strange, I live in England UK but I miss him as well. Don’t forget to tell the people who mean so much to you that you love them.
Thanks for watching all the way in the UK
Youre a good dude, thank you for the update brother!
I absolutely love your stories brother i hope to meet you someday I found your channel through shoestring .
Thanks for watching! It's been my pleasure to share my memories of him with everyone
Thanks Matt.
I was chattinh with George Graham.
Hopefully you guys will all meet up it Britt Iowa with Mark's family.
I’m so sorry Matt, I knew him as a UA-cam personality who was extremely fascinating and I could see the friendship he had with you was a really beautiful one and I’m really sorry about the hurting that you are going through and my prayers are that you will be comforted over time and still hang onto those wonderful memories, he would mention in videos how he thought of you often and you came to help him as a friend who spent time with him as a friend and it was wonderful to see
I'm sure sorry you lost your buddie matt. I been thru it myself and it hurts so bad. I never heard him mention going overseas in the near future. perhaps i just missed that and it's a shame he didn't get to do this. I been dealing with bad health since 2012 myself and in 2014 i went to Ireland and England, wales and Scotland for 5 weeks and had a blast best I could. At that point I didn't expect to see 2015. I'm saddened by all the health issues him and so many others have been having the past couple years but that's another story. I was paying attention and heard the things he said about it. You were both real friends for one another and it showed. That is something special to cherish these days and times we are in. I'm planning to go ride that ferry to that little island you both went to maybe this summer. it looked like a cool place. *I'll hang a lock in honor of shoestring with his tag on it* would that be wrong? Thank you for being the friend you are.
Right on
I watched stores UA-cam Chanel first , I didn't know he got killed till later l started watching other train riders and found shoestring videos and was hooked ever since then
I lost my best friend Christmas eve,he was shot and killed protecting others,,so i feel your pain loosing a bro,,I watched shoestring for years and even though I never met him his death felt personal too,,he gave a lot of people a sense of freedom that he enjoyed and we never get to..rip Mark
I'm sorry for your loss. Cheers my friend
@@rpdobbler thanks Matt..and I'm sorry for your loss too, such a pity Mark couldn't talk to yourself or many others..doubt he ever knew how loved he was,,there was many ears willing to listen and help if only he asked,,brings truth to the saying ,smiling on the outside but dying on the inside,,all alone in a world full of people
I love hearing the stories Matt. Infact I'm going to listen to you again share. Thoughts are with you mate as we all struggle Shoestrings passing with you..
Racecar spelt backwards is racecar btw lol
Ha ha! Thats a GREAT ONE!
Nice work.
Thanks for sharing. Got to say i am a little disappointed in his gofundme. I expected a lot more people to help out. For all his followers, it turned out pretty poorly.
It did pretty good I thought? Hopefully it helps his family a bit?
Yes it did. I guess sometimes I have high expectations. Mark had 200k subscribers and if even a quarter of them had given a dollar it would have been spectacular. I sure miss the little guy.
😊🧡
I hope Ken is doing good I know him and shoestring seemed close they made a few videos together and I also hope you’re doing good as well it’s weird he gone.
Yep...I know Shoestring love little Ken....I hope Ken is well too & didn't take Shoestring's passing too hard.
@@rpdobbler yeah same I remember seeing them doing that bottle flip video and I think that was the last video they did and once I heard of his passing I thought of Ken I still can’t believe he gone I feel bad for everyone.
