I miss him so much. I feel fortunate to be close enough with him that we would text back and forth regularly. I’m going to ride with my friend that owns the Oregon Pacific Railroad on Monday. I’m taking the tag he gave me along for the ride. I have so many audio messages and text messages on my phone where he mentions his friend Matt. I’ll be honest it wasn’t until he went missing that I discovered your UA-cam channel. When I picked him up in Wishram Washington it was 85° and I remember thinking the same.. I’m about to pick up a guy that just rode a freight train here from Tennessee. I actually mentioned to him how I was surprised that he smelled like he had just showered. He said he hated being dirty. I really enjoy your vids. Godspeed Mark. ❤️

Hi Matt, I appreciate your stories and memories about 'Shoestring" I'm a railfan and stumbled on to Mark's channel and had watched maybe a dozen of his videos prior to his passing (he has a lot of videos to watch !) . I know that on a few of his videos he talked about using a bunch of 'baby wipes' to help stay clean, haha . I don't do Facebook so you are my source for any updates. Thank-you🚂🚂

I love watching train videos and every time I see an open door and a Boxcar, I will say: "Mark are you in there?" or expecting to see Mark put his head out and with a big Smile and wave as the train went down the track. Yes, Matt, I miss Mark and so do all my Train Buddies in Southern Ohio. Mark would visit with Jaw Tooth often and Jaw Tooth would go to his Apartment in Tennessee and do a video about Mark, they had a great friendship. Well, I got to run, thanks Again Matt, I Enjoyed the memories of the greatest Hobo ever, Hobo Shoestring, A legend of the rails for last 30 plus years, What a life of Freedom. He made so many people smile when they were down and laugh with him about the stories he would speak of. I think the next man of the year should be Hobo Shoestring, A true American Folk Hero, a legend.

It was Troy Matt who scattered some of Marks ashes on the rails. It was kind of funny because he catched out wanting to head west & re trace Shoestrings last ride so he got on the train only to realise it was heading east! So he had to hitch a ride from Virginia to catch out again to hopefully head west! Shoestring would have found that funny. 😂

Hey Matt I grow up in (Terryville CT) there was this train tunnel they called it (The mile long Tunnel) The first time I walk through it the train came in and they had cubie holes. Look it up! Thanks for sharing

Hi Matt, I keep thinking about how he was feeling at the end, he seamed so excited, his website was going well, and moving to Alaska would have made him so happy, living in the UK I didn't know him as well as you but he didn't seam to have any enemies, anyway take care Matt.
Speaking of history where I now live in st.clair michigan. This was home to the port huron and detroit railroad as a young man getting into hobby and becoming a railfan. And I find myself explaining to my granddaughter who is 3.5 years old of the glory days and tracks that are bike paths now. I used to see PH&D boxcars everywhere it seemed. Sadly the last time I saw a car was in mid 90s in Mesa, AZ.
Hey Matt, being in Cleveland area you ought to hook up with Dave from the crooked river and eastern he has model train videos on you tube. Really nice guy with a kick ass double deck basement layout ho scale.

I, too, miss Shoestring. I miss his videos, his knowledge regarding everything as he was a very intelligent man. He taught me, and I am sure a lot of other people as well, about the mechanics of trains, which is the best car to ride and why. Matt, Shoestring hears you when you tell these stories and most likely is also laughing at them. He also lnows when ypu and others think about him. Just look for signs that he sends or when you hear his voice know that he is thinking about you. He is truly a free spirit now.
I sure do miss Shoestring. I know he had liver issues, hepatitis if I’m not mistaken. The liver is responsible for removing all the toxins out of our body that becomes compromised. Someone becomes toxic, and they can start having hallucinations.
I wondered if maybe he was out in the raft making a little update video, and it flipped or something. But if he had just come from the hospital and was mixed up, I doubt it.

I don't speak for the family, but I can all but assure you that the family isn't going to say one way or the other. It's private. I have my own opinion what could have happened but it's speculation. It's just a guess but if you take time and actually watch Marks video's he may have left a clue what could have happened. Marks video dated Oct. 28, 2021 titled "Medical update/Lake Tour" you can fast forward and watch between 6:10-9:00. Keep an open mind, open your ears and listen to what is said and look around. Tell us what you see and hear him say. Just saying, the obvious is right there on his video. I've heard of few say he was depressed & might of well I don't think so. Whatever may have happened it probably was an accident. Hobo had a way of banging himself up like showing up when a car did. Stay positive man. 👍
With all due respect, your suppositions and conjecture is your own. Many things transpired between October of 2021 up to March of this year, all of which was dutifully recorded and posted by Mark (now for posterity). We all have this burning desire to know the circumstances, and as you said we may never know should his family choose to keep the information private. Speculation and trying to surmise what happened does no one any good.
