Xbox Series X: Assassin’s Creed Unity FINALLY Runs Locked at 60fps

- Опубліковано 18 вер 2024
- One of the most notoriously challenging games made for the current generation of consoles FINALLY runs locked at 60 frames per second - but you’re going to need the original disc version of the game and a next-gen Xbox to get the job done. Alex Battaglia and John Linneman reveal Assassin’s Creed Unity running flawlessly on Xbox Series X and discuss what makes this game so special and why it melted the PS4 and Xbox One back in the day.

PLEASE release a patch Ubisoft! Imagine this game at 4K with further draw distance. Also, HDR. This game was made for HDR. I need that!
If Ms buy them,maybe them.
The game should be designed to work good with HDR.
Otherwise there will be tonemapping issues. Whats mean SDR will be better.
Sad but true..
@@ivymike10mt The game's internal lighting is absolutely being done in HDR space. Of course when allowing for HDR output, they will need to include good tonemapping options, but the AC games have been doing an incredible job with those options so I don't see that being a problem. No way it would look better at SDR though even with no tonemapping options. Remember, most TVs will still tonemap by themselves.
Fix the AI
Fix the bomb throw animation blending
Fix the netcode
Fix the climb warping
Then we can talk about upgrades
Huge fan by the way, so funny meeting you here
Even if it was 4k hdr but 30fps locked I'd be happy.
AC Unity is the only game Ubisoft made that feels like an E3 demo that was not downgraded.
Yea, but Ubisoft bad bruh. Dont drop your pitchforks! You can look at things in hindsight.

In terms of gameplay, this was my favourite Assassin’s Creed. The sheer amount of interiors you could cut through was game changing. I hope for a remaster, I would buy it in a heartbeat.
AC: Unity is a 2014 game and it still remains as the best looking Ubisoft game.
Nah
Origins is also awesome
It looks decent, but they typically do get better and better in sequence.
Yup
Yea, even the animation in Unity looks way better than the latest AC game lol.
Unity was released in the wrong console generation .
If it was made now it would have been much more successful.
I disagree. Its graphics were a great improvement for the ps4 and xbox one, the issue with it were the horrendous bugs at launch, a clear sign that the game was rushed and not properly tested or fixed before being shipped. Everything else was spot on. None of its faults were hardware-based.
@@TheHidan234
All the frame rate issues were hardware based
The og Xbox one couldn't run the game at all , till they downgraded resolution to 900p , and still the frame rate was awful.
It's still one of the best looking games imo .
Apart from the gameplay being tired and boring at this point.
@@Fastwalker27 still closer to AC style story compared to odyssey and origins
It would still have been a bad game in my opinion. The game just wasn't fun at all.
I love going back to older games specially if they look better
You mean esp if they have higher frame rates ?
I'm hoping The Elder Scrolls Oblivion has drastically improved load times on the Series X, then I can finally go back and finishing Shivering Isles on my 360 version of the game.
I have a very hard time dealing with the constant and lengthy load times and its kept me from finishing the game.

It had much viewer cutscenes though, can't really compare it.
Motion capture vs Ai generated lip sync/emotions can't really be compared. Odyssey and Origins are way longer/bigger than Unity they can't do motion capture for every single characters so they used the same method used in The Witcher 3 (in worst)

@حمودي الملكي he meant the devs over did the game to the next next gen of console like now.
@حمودي الملكي devs didn't optimise the game for current gen si the console ports suffered and the program couldn't run at full extent , probably cause the dev kits run cooler and better than average consoles ,same chips but better in dev kits.
LOL, LOOK AT HAND TEXTURES
Believe it or not this is the most beautiful AC up until now. Its animations are just perfect. Now we have a good excuse to revisit this awesome title.
But its still locked 30 fps on digital version which sucks
its the lighting for me, the engine they used for AC Unity and Far Cry Primal had some of the best lighting and landscapes ive seen in gaming, but the games themselves had their pros and cons
@@sean7332 yaeh hopefully after the console launch, they could fix this situation. it makes no sense that digital version is locked at 30fps. thats one of my favourite game. i loved the quality of parkour animations and the lighting.

@JustChizzin because the disc version was before they patched it to locked at 30 fps. Of course, Ubisoft are obviously gonna unlock the frame rate on the ps5 and XSX.
@JustChizzin because the digital version available for current gen is the version with the patch.
I don't see how you don't get it. The digital version currently available is patched so it can run better on ps4 and xbox one. This patch places a 30fps cap because it's better for performance on the PS4 & xbox one.
The disc version doesn't have this patch. You download the patch after buying the physical copy like any other patch.
The xbox series x hasn't been released so Ubisoft can't release the uncapped digital version for the xbox series x.
Bruh, from the looks of this it seems like future Ubisoft games facial animation just got worse.... especially after unity. Big difference between this and AC origins and odyssey
Unity was a much more condensed game in terms of its scope than the recent titles. Origins and Odyssey are essentially open world RPG's. It's very hard to do top quality facial animation when you've got way more characters and dialogue to deal with.
Agreed very much they downgraded from unity, syndicate kept on getting worse
@@maynardburger It's true, that's why we need more condensed games. Sprawling empty-ish open worlds with little to do and where you have to grind for materials are not appealing to me.
@Intruder ubisoft fanboys just can't admit that😂. They will come up with a million excuses to justify npc faces that look like they are made out of clay, the awkward animations, and the grindy RPG mechanics built to encourage you to buy time savers and xp boosters with real money
Assassins Creed Unity and the Far Cry games are the only one's with good facial animation, mostly all other Ubisoft titles look like early PS3 facial animation.
Dude hell yes, this was a launch nightmare in OG consoles.
and a buggy one for PC.
PCs too.
For some sure, I had no problems with it on PS4 at launch. Though of course when I did a second play-through on PC years later at 60fps it was much better.
current gen struggles with open world games in general
Yea. Had this game Day 1. It was the first game to really push next gen hardware but unfortunately, performance had some serious issues. I still remember falling through the world twice just during the tutorial and some of the framerate drops were really bad.
Still couldn't take away how gorgeous it looked though. All the NPCs on screen at once was amazing but also had some rendering issues with cloths and materials popping in and materiasing when walking through the dense populated areas. Those are issues that I hope the SSD of the PS5 completely eliminates.
Enjoyed the game though. I still like Unity better than the new ones that released. My opinion, the combat got worse when they adopted the RPG like mechanics.
Every unlocked game will either lock at 60fps on the new consoles, or have extremely rare frame drops if not. Simply put, they have more than enough CPU and GPU boost that it should always be above 60fps. Even in games that dip below 30fps on base consoles like this one. Cool to see, but not surprising at all.
Yes, but they aren't even optimized and this game ist notoriously wonky performance wise. I get what you are saying waay more powerful so obvious 60.

Seriously people,
Take a look at this, and then open up the recent trailer for Valhalla.
The detailed city, the fantastic character models, the density and so much more...
This is the early gen game, and that's the late generation one?
What the hell happened?
That's what happens when you focus on quantity over quality.
Unity doesnt have a 24/7 day night cycle, or near the amount of dynamic events and objects. instead Unity has preset lighting cycles and pre baked/static assetts
Unity is a glitchy mess. The crowds are a glitchy mess still. Mechanically and as far as a living world, Unity is barebones compared to all the mechanics and systems being present on Valhalla.
The setting is what happened... lol. People need to realize that the older settings such as those in Valhalla did not simply have cities that were this dense and built/structured like this. Even London during the time of Valhalla was much smaller I’m sure and looked much different. So that’s part of the reason that things are and look different. If a certain time period simply didn’t have cities this amazing looking in terms of scope and style of architecture, then what is Ubisoft supposed to do? You can’t make up cities that weren’t at least mostly accurate to the time period. And the same goes for “density”. Obviously an AC set in one location/time period will feature less dense cities than another. So if AC did a game during the 1800s and set it in the American Midwest, obviously the cities/towns would be much smaller in scale and less dense than here in Unity. The same goes for Valhalla and Odyssey. Simply put, the city structures and scale of the cities were not as dense back during those times as they came to be in the time period and location of Unity. Also, the dialogue options in the new games are probably *part* of the reason for the facial animations being less appealing. You have to remember that motion capture would have to be done for at least two times the amount of scenes as there would’ve been in a game like Unity because in Valhalla and Odyssey you have dialogue options and each option would have to both be voiced and motion captured. That leaves less time for polishing the facial animations.
@AnEn but the cross platform games began development on PS4 and Xbox one....and then transitioned to next gen. So why drop the previous gen version? When majority of the game was made with that particular gen in mind.....true next gen starts in 2022
This still looks good than most games to date.
Its mostly the lighting, it was implemented super well.
Looks better than ac Valhalla 😂
Err, well most Xbox games this gen. Infamous Second Son (2014) looks like a next gen game compared to Crackdown 3 (2019) for example.
andrewsqual second son was a launch title on the ps4, too. Suckerpunch did a super good job on it, and its a shame it was the last game in the franchise

Absolutely. Check the E3 trailer out. It even showcases co op. How awesome would that be for a new AC game?
But yea they are doing the soft-rpg thing now...
A couple details about Unity look distinctly last gen to me.
1) Unity's low asset count. For example, the ground is mostly barren of objects (pebbles, varied plants, bugs).
2) Atmosphere lacks dynamism (fog, dust, smoke).

I agree, it's one of the most beautiful games ever graphically, but a great game it really isn't. Everything except for the surface level beauty is mediocre/bad, story, characters, interior parkour jank, repetitiveness, everything.
It's gorgeous, but also the textures could use a bump and it would add so much if they just raytrace water and select characters. Also the hair and eyes look a bit rougher than it should on the key characters.

This wasn't just the best looking assassins creed game, it was also peak assassin gameplay imo. The new ones are fun, but Unity is how an assassins creed game should play like. (apart frome the general clunkyness)
Unity still had the identity of AC in the gameplay. The first few AC games were about blending into these overcrowded city streets and having a reason everyone is out. Unity does that better than any game since the end of the Ezio Trilogy.

people shit on the old AC formula but by god was it better than the naff we have now. The new combat system is terrible and the stealth systems seem none existent.

combat is hard but fun and it makes sens that u cant kill 15 ennemys and the sneeking around is soooo good
@Mr Glass I'm going to explain the joke to you because your response was pathetic.
Bisexual edition because in Valhalla, whether you play as a male or female character, you can bone every other male and female character in the game that has a romance option. There are no straight romance options in the game (confirmed by Ubisoft, because you can also switch your character's gender at any time), therefore, it is 'AC Historical Fantasy RPG Simulator: Bisexual Edition'.

Technically, I think there IS a way to test the disc version on a Series S - you'll need a few things, though:
A Series S, obviously.
An Xbox One or Series X with a disc drive to install the game on.
An external drive to copy the unpatched install to.
And finally, an account that owns AC Unity digitally.
Xbox disc/digital game installs are interchangeable, so you can play a downloaded game with a disc license, or a game installed from disc with a digital license. So you could install the disc version using an Xbox with a disc drive, then use that unpatched install on a Series S using an account that owns the game digitally.
You'd need to make the Series S the owning account's Home system, and switch to offline mode to avoid triggering the patch updates, but it SHOULD work.

I remember when AC Syndicate released it had very toned down interiors as opposed to AC Unity.
AC Unity doesn't get enough credit for what it was visually, definitely one of - if not the best - in the franchise.
AC Unity had a lot of crowds but it was a horribly deficient game in virtually every other respect. Probably why Syndicate focussed more on things that you would expect to see in a city such as traffic, horses, trains, moving boats etc.
@iSolvano HDR Origins is a very beautiful game, I'm not entirely comfortable with calling AC Unity the best looking in the franchise, but as far as building interiors go I think it's got the top spot.
I think Syndicate is actually underrated. That game is also stunning, and the npcs are much more realistic and lively
@@lorankatoran8856 Not at all, the NPCs on Unity are dynamic, they actually travel to/from work. On Syndicate they are completely static, they are there day/night, hardly more realistic and its super jarring when they do the day/night transition and you see this clearly.

It's still be one of the best looking games in the last generation i hope MS will can unlock the resolution by Machine Learning soon.
Lol
@One Thou Wou Microsoft can do it. They don't need devs to increase resolution on One X for xbox/ xbox 360 games. And now on the series X they said they can double the framerate of selected titles without interventions of the devs. So yes a patch is needed but not from the devs.
@One Thou Wou
ML also incorporates DLSS tech. Using DLSS 2.0 or better could simulate higher resolution even if the native Resolutions are much lower.
@One Thou Wou dude do your research and come back. I understand what you say but that's how back compat work with Xbox. They already patched xbox/ xbox 360 games without devs. And they will do the same on the next gen. Google it and comeback. And no, Rockstar didn't help them make Rdr1 4k on One X. This is just the results of the emulator, like Ac1, All the splinter cell, the witcher 2, etc etc and now they can double the framerate even when it is locked. So basically 30fps games can be increase to 60 and 60 to 120fps.
@One Thou Wou
Not really.
Emulators have been increasing resolution forever now
Remember when Ubisoft used facial motion capture and the animations were actually good. How does Unity seriously look better than Valhalla? Hopefully, they get do a massive engine overhaul likey did with anvilnext 2.0 and the next ac game looks really good and the animations don't look like muppets. Unity looks better than literally every AC game after it.
I honestly think it was because Unity was a massive headache to Ubisoft that they decided to play the later games more safe in terms of size and scope and Valhalla is still going to be a crossgen title so it will look the same as Origins and Odyssey. Kind of like how Crysis 1 was a huge headache for Crytek because they bet on the wrong horse in terms of future proofing.
I remember playing this on my new PS4, I literally use to stop in alleys and rooftops just to admire how beautiful it looked.
AC has not been able to match this graphics in any game released after Unity.
And I was one of the lucky ones who did not face too many game breaking glitches.
I remember watching this game on TheRadBrad's and seeing the "Ball Room" scene where Arno follows Elise I was blown away. Then the same year someone uploaded a video using 2x980Ti and runs the same scene at Ultra Settings I was mesmerized by the color and lighting of that scene. When I completed my 2070 + 3700X build last year I was finally able to experience that scene myself. It never fails to deliver. Imo it was the best of the original AC series.

Worst fighting system in the series. So much downgrades in the gameplay mechanics except for the parkour. I like this game but the best really ? AC2/Brotherhood are wayyyy better in almost every ways but graphics and are old as hell
@@femto8402 It was actually the best, because you couldn't magically counter attack 30 guys who would come to you sequentially.
@@mirceastan4618 Yeah true but honestly I take it every time over Unity's gameplay, it was a good attempt but they failed. It was not fun at all to play and to watch when in the old ones it was easy but incredibly animated
Welp, everyone to their own opinion.
Best ac is syndicate
I still think this is one of the most beautiful games ever made. The Versailles scenes in partcularl are gorgeous.
AC: Unity was the last Assassin's Creed game I actually finished, all other games after this one I either didn't get them or lost interest mid game and never finished.
Yeah imo ac unity was the last true assassin's creed game
@@guythatstillusespocketwatc3145 was Syndicate any good? I got the Ezio Collection last week (almost done with AC2) and I'm thinking of getting Unity after I finish Revelations.
@@parixitchaudhary5823 not really syndicate has a weird feel to it the stealth, combat, parkour and customization but personally I got it cause I wanted to play all major ac games but I would go for ac unity but you should watch some gameplay and spoiler free reviews and decide for yourself cheers mate
Holy shit, that's the same for me.
I had a think and I just realised that every game after Unity - I never finished.
Same, the last interesting AC for me.
Unity would look amazing with Ray Tracing.
I'm not sure much would change, the baked lighting is emulating that already.
@@cikame I think ray tracing would make the game darker than it already is considering the game has good ambient occlusion
@@cikame You could have a full day and night cycle with RT.
@@dampflokfreund I really don't think you need RT for that.
Raytraced reflections on those fancy polished interiors would be stunning
It’s patched for 60fps now, if anybody is watching in current year
Every time I fire this game up, I'm still blown away by the lighting and fabric shaders. The velvet-y sheen on Arno's coats is beautiful.
Unity is still one of the best looking Assassins creed games. Odyssey looks amazing but the dense nature of this game reminds me of what Cyberpunk will look like.
You have no idea how cyberpunk will end up looking...
@@ilarionispas5104 Everyone does we have seen gameplay already.
One of the best artistically pleasing game I have seen. The visuals look so nice.
There are games that have more polygons and high res textures than this game, games that have ray tracing and none of them still looks artistically as good as this. Its a shame that this is the only game with this exact type of art style and lighting. No other game looked like this.
Unity is the last REAL Assassin's Creed.
Isn't it Syndicate? Anyway I bored with the beginning of that game. Unity feels like the true successor of AC2.
@@yopepoy syndicate kinda seems like a little evolution above this
@@yopepoy well, syndicate was a little less enjoyable imo

PC dudes before Series X: give me 60 or give me death
PC dudes after Series X: give me 144 or give me death
900p🤦🤣
We were 144fps long before the next gen consoles came out, we been doing 60fps for a long time.. However, the series X won't be playing many games at 4k60, at least not without some settings dropping, or just old console settings. 120fps and higher is noticeably better than 60, which is why i upgraded to a 165hz 1440p HP Omen monitor years ago.
@John Chaser I am not surprised at all. Till 30 series real-time raytracing was a joke so no one has rushed to upgrade their PC or build new ones.
@John Chaser 3060 will easily become the most used card on Steam if it has the power near the 3070 and be under $500 to be fair. I and many others skipped the 20 series, because we knew the 30 series would be much better, especially with AMD bringing some good comp.
John Chaser yea casuals don’t watch these kind of videos, mostly enthusiasts watch and comment. I have a 1080 ti and going for a 3080 or amd equivalent
Its one of the last few classic AC games. The lighting in this game is amazing. I hope they kinda remaster it and release a patch or something.

In my dreams Ubisoft will remaster this game, fixing the horrible LOD, adding 60fps and adding some removed content (it is quite clear the ending was rushed and voice lines were never added on side missions).
"...but can it run AC: Unity?"
I played this like a month ago. Started a new game and loved it again. This is objectively the best Assassins Creed Game. Awesome visuals, great missions, decent gameplay especially the climbing and just moving around in the open world. And you can play it with friends! Were did that multiplayer disappeared to?

Based on their other remasters, that's probably not going to happen. It might actually look worse.
RDR2 looks better to be honest you can’t deny,oh and world is way too small in Unity.
@@erichvonmanstein1952 You can’t compare french revolution time to the west RDR2......the thing that I love about unity is that you can go inside a lot of buildings...the thing the I hate is the low AI of enemies

2024 anniversary remaster would be very great.
Is it me or does AC Unity look better than all the ACs after it (aka Origins, Odyssey, and even Valhalla).
Not origins tho
Not Origins or Oddessey on PC. Those games are breathtaking
Yes definitely if ac unity wasn't buggy on release the assassin's creed games would be way better today graphically and gameplay-wise also they'd not be RPGs.
Yes, you are right.
I think it’s the lactation & art style that makes unity distinct.
This game was ahead of it's time.I still play it on my XB1X. Can't wait to play it on the Series X.
Does it not look terribly blurry? I play it on xsx snd 4k tv...the blurriness is awful.
@@MightyMagnuss it looks fine on my screen. Try adjusting your settings.
I love the redemption Unity has had over the years from making Ubisoft an industry pariah because of how broken it was, to being a misunderstood masterpiece and a reminder of the better times of AC.
This usually happens with most Ubisoft games
they just keep getting worse and worse every time they release a new game leaving us longing for the bad games of last gen. just look at legion, it has no water physics and shitty car physics. driver sf from 2011 had really good driving, the first 2 watch dogs had good water physics, even ac origins/odyssey had pretty good water physics
Imagine Ray tracing on AC Unity. I'm already wowed with this game even without Ray tracing.
Funny how a game that came out at the start of the generation was torching the consoles
Why? The more familiar devs become with the hardware, the more they get to utilize its potential. Look at any launch title and compare it to a game a couple years down the line and the difference is extremely noticeable.
You missed his point.
@@RaenYrtham No, I just avoided having to point out that those claims have been debunked multiple times.
Dalton Woods its called shitty optimization
@@Sheepy007 No, again, the hardware has over and over proven to be fine with heat dissipation by people with actual hardware in their hands. That said, once devs get to optimize the games utilizing the new API's and hardware we will see a further increase in performance. You'd have to never have read a book in your life to stand by this asinine statement.
Unity does have a rolling day/night cycle, it's just extremely slow compared to most games. You'll notice it after a long exploration session. Whether that's part of how they got away with baking, I'm not sure. The missions do selectively roll ahead the time to show off certain environments under certain lighting conditions, though. Having put a few hundred hours in on Xbox One, I can tell you it pushes the hardware well beyond its limits, sometimes dropping below *10* FPS at totally random times, which makes it buggier. This game desperately needs a fixed rerelease on next gen so people can find out how secretly amazing it is. The framerate will certainly help, but there's so much more that needs polish
Isn't it running at 60 fps now.

Mine too, but it came with the Xbox in an AC Bundle in 2014, I got that and nabbed MCC for free via a black friday deal. Still remember being impressed with Unity overall, and Halos 60fps was a revelation.
Forza Horizon 2 and Project Spark were my first ones. Played Dead Rising 3 shortly after, and then Sunset Overdrive, that was 2014. Good times. I got into Assassin's Creed games later. Love Unity.

I was as excited about it then as people are today (or were, anyhow) for Dreams. The microtransaction scheme in the game was horrendous and ruined it, but the functionality of Spark was actually really cool, the fact that you could work on a project between PC and Xbox was excellent and something Sony should consider for Dreams.

Would love to see if the Series X could improve the 10fps of Just Cause 3.
It should be able to do, on my PC, that game runs at max settings with my RX5700 and Ryzen 3700x, it doesn't really push the gpu that hard and the cpu is only using like 20%, the Xbox Series X should be able to brute force that game at 60fps if the frame rate isn't locked.
It will be interesting to see if many developers patch up many of these games because it should be quite easy for them to do for most games, especially games that have a dynamic resolution and unlocked frame rate, they should perform really well next gen.
Probably would. It's damn smoother on my Pro, usually 30. Series X will probably be a locked 30. They should unlock the framerate with a patch. For next-gen.
@@RandomGamingMoments925 I hope a lot of games get updated with unlocked frame rates.
@@RandomGamingMoments925 If the frame rate isn't uncapped, it will lock at 30fps but at least it should hold 30fps more or less at all times but going on my PC that handles Just Cause 3 quite easy, the Xbox Series X shouldn't have any issues doing Just Cause 3 at 60fps if they uncap the frame rate, cpu usage is quite low on my PC and with the new Ryzen cpu's in the next gen consoles, it should be more than enough to do that.
Am I the only one who thinks that this looks somewhat better than Valhalla? Like, I don't know what it is, the animations or something, just makes it more natural. What the hell happened to Ubi and this franchise since?
No time for motion captured acting when you're trying to have 200 hours worth of Witcher sidequests.

@@emulation2369 nope i did as well
It's the thing they always do: They have a great idea but some flaws and problems. A lot of people criticized that parts of the game are locked behind a forced co-op mode that not everyone wanted to play. So, instead of improving on those flaws, they ditch it completely and go the safe route instead.
@@emulation2369 I also wanted Co-Op Assassin's Creed, and Unity did a good job
It was buggy as hell man
When I see this game, the first thing that comes to mind for me is that hilarious crowd LOD pop-in that would frequently replace one human model with a very different one, sometimes even men for women or vice versa ;) But it is indeed a very nice looking game, always was.
Also, as a bit of a photographer that focused a lot on landscapes, sky, clouds and such, I can absolutely confirm that good lighting conditions can be very fleeting. I've frequently called making a nice sky/sunset/sunrise photo an adrenaline sport, because you really have to learn to read the conditions and predict what's going to happen, since if you only respond once it starts happening, there's often so little time you just won't have time to set up and make a good photo, even if you are more or less ready for it. It can literally be a matter of seconds and then it's gone.
The LOD of the buildings also sucks a lot :( Like you're 100 meters from Notre Dame, and it's just so blurry and low-detail it hurts.

This game had ALOT of potential... The setting, the next-gen anticipation, the graphics, the actors, the focus on the creed, the stealth emphasis, co-op multiplayer, etc.
If only Ubisoft took alot of time and passion polishing it and giving it a great story for its setting, they easily could've release a GOTY contender once again. Instead, what we got was a mess of a game with mediocre story, clunky gameplay, bad multiplayer.
