- After traveling Sri Lanka for 2 weeks, I've put together this video which outlines what it's like to travel in Sri Lanka, and offers some tips for traveling Sri Lanka. I summarize the transportation, the hotels and accommodations, what to watch out for, and the overall experience that I had. This is a must-watch if you are planning a trip to Sri Lanka.
Our trip took us from Colombo, along the coast for a short visit to Galle before heading to Mirissa to go whale watching and hangout on the beach. We then went to Tangalle for more of Sri Lanka's beautiful beaches, and then Tissa for a Yala Safari tour. After that, we headed up to Ella where we did a tour of a local village, and then took the train to Kandy where we hung out for a few days before ending our trip at the beach town probably best known for being close to the airport - Negombo.

Thank you for visiting Sri Lanka. Our tourists arrivals is increasing very fast. Last year 2.1 million and our population is only 21 million so about 1/10 as much of our population have visited our country. That has contributed a lot to our economy and it will help to increase the facilities in public transport and infrastructure.
Hi! Wanna watch the coolest things to do in Sri Lanka: ua-cam.com/video/od5QLzyAw_Y/v-deo.html
lovely country!
SL weera India to srilanka
I'm a Pakistani, working in Saudi Arabia as travel agent. Visited Sri Lanka last year in Jan 2017 and am planning to visit again in Feb 2019. I didn't try to "SAVE MONEY" so I booked 4 Star hotels , each and everything were SUPER PERFECT & not expensive at all. Sri Lanka is BEST PLACE to visit 👍
Love from Pakistan ❤
I have been tamil nadu recently and visited rameswaram also adam bridge. I have to say that sri Lanka looks pretty clean in comparison with Indian side.
It's cleaner and I find that the people are happier to see tourists.
yes, Sri Lanka is much cleaner.
Peter Vlčko 😂😂😂
kirihettige don Kirihetti brueahahahahahaha 😀
European like clean
I have been to Sri Lanka 3 times and I love everything about it. It’s definitely cleaner than it’s south Asian neighbours. Food is great and the scenery is beautiful.
@ Thanks for complimenting my country
Thank you. this all about mindset
We lost everthing during the war time. But we stand up again by alone so quickly.. Thats the greatness of sri lanka. We wil bring up our sri lanka to the best in south Asia very soon.if you go to sri lanka go with love then you will find everything lovely.....
I've been to Sri-Lanka 3 times previously and returning again in July of this year. Sri-Lanka is a untapped gem where it's people are kind, generous and friendly. Haggle with Tuk Tuk drivers because they will overcharge if you let them. But overall you will have a great experience in Sri-Lanka. My favourite hotel is the Hilton Colombo.
thank you sir. we can't expect star facilities on cheap prices ❤️
Im Sri Lankan and I think this chap gave a fair assessment. He loved the country and was honest about his experience and some of the problems. We can only improve with constructive criticisms.
Thank you. People hear something negative and they take it as a personal attack. I loved Sri Lanka. It's a great place to travel. But if you just read the comments you'd think I had a terrible time and I only complained about it in the video.
Sri Lanka is so beautiful!
Rent a small car and travel. You will really enjoy. Visits villages. Never stay in Colombo. If you go to Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, you will see real nature of Sri Lanka.
They were trying to live way cheaper than locals do and travel. ???? Hiring a car???
One of the best countries to travel. Sri Lanka is safe and amazing 🇱🇰
Thanks bro
I subscribe you few week ago.
Dude 5500 LKR for THISSA To ELLA ? Its a good deal .. !! Even a local don't complaint of things that you mentioned in this video. You just a window shopper!!!
I think it's a good price for a private car, but I think there is a hole in the market for travelers that want to go from Thissa to Ella (and there are many of them). The options are private car, or busy and slow local bus. And I think there is only one bus in the morning that goes directly there. Any other time of the day you have to transfer.
Western travelers would be willing to spend 1000 LKR for a direct bus that has assigned seating.
You could take uber or pick-me services now in Sri Lanka. For anyone thinking of coming here. just get the phone app and you're good to go. But it's more common in western province
Vega Cloud surprisingly, yes.
Vega Cloud yeah actually you can get a elephant ride on uber. Little bit more expensive if you do the ride share so it’s cheaper to do just 1 person and comfortable.
Btw after the ride make you you tip the elephant so get bananas for the elephant.
😂😂😂😂😂
For anyone visiting Sri Lanka best advise would be don't go for the cheapest option. That is not the best way to see the gorgeous island. Remember all ur 'expensive' pricing help support many industries that depend on tourism. Spending that little bit extra can be the difference between saving 2 - 3 days in idle travel time. As mentioned in these comments u get what u pay for. Don't sacrifice the chance to see amazing beauty for $1000 bucks extra in ur bank account. Simply not worth it.
Hashan Punchihewa unless you don't have an extra thousand dollars...
richard allen in that case u shouldn't be doing any complaining in your video as many other people have suggested in the comments section.
Very good point I agree
Sometimes the most interesting things happen to you in a bus station or during "idle" travel time. It's not about seeing everything...it's about experiences in life and those happen everywhere all the time...and are free. It's clear you work in the tourist industry. I don't think that there is any shortage of people who want luxury holidays so no need to tell people on a budget or who want different experiences out of travel how much to spend.
I live in Australia. The comforts and luxury you get in Sri Lankan 5 star hotels are far better than Australian 5 star hotels . And the Sri Lankan buffet / meals in those 5 star hotels are far better than Australian 5 star meals . And the most important thing the price in those 5 star hotels in Sri Lanka lesser than Australian 5 star hotel rates .
But the thing is you can’t expect luxury from airBNB hotels . And those public transport are for some of those Sri Lankan people ( financially struggling) who can’t afford their own cars / taxi to go to work etc . Those type of public transport is definitely not for travellers who need comfort and relaxation and to Holliday out. I’m not sure why travellers want to use this type of cheap mode of transport that are meant for people for day to day transport and for those who actually struggle in poverty. Please use taxi or Uber or chauffeur driven cars, which some of them are very comfortable and luxurious and doesn’t have the price tag of developed countries. If you want to travel cheap can use tuk tuk instead for short distances, but have to be cautious with some of the tuk tuk drivers over pricing
Pretty accurate description of Sri Lanka. You guys seamed a lot more patient with the public transportation situation that I did. Also you’re right it could be better organized, but it was far worse than it is now just a few years ago. Although it’s a bit chaotic at the moment, once the country learns to handle its visitors better it will be the best place to visit. My only advice to tourists is that you please respect the local culture. Sri Lankan’s are extremely friendly people and would go out of their way to help you if you show them that you appreciate them.
All in all, I enjoyed watching this video!
I think you're dead on. It'll only get easier. Less than 10 years ago they were in a civil war - it takes time.
Michelle oh really. I've been to shitty USA. You people have no public transportation at all. You have to have a car everywhere. Also you people have homeless shitting all over the streets in your large cities. 😂 Wtf
Hey, If you are trying to live cheaper than locals and want to enjoy the country, what is the point???. Public transport is for Sri Lankan citizens who pay taxes and that's why the fares are heavily subsidized. You want to exploit those cheap service and complain. Whats is the point of U visiting a 3rd world country and complaining about public facilities because you could not live and travel way cheaper than locals. I do not think you are the type of tourists Sri Lanka is looking for as you guys even do not have the open mindedness.
Even we stay in a more convenient place when we travel around our country.....so it's very rude of saying negative things regarding the accomadations, food and transportation etc....Bcz if you wanna experience a great journey, you probably stay in star hotels like kingsburry, cinnamon grand, hilton, galadari, taj samudra, galle face hotel, jet wing hotel etc....and use private transportation modes....I kindly request those who read these comments,friends....just search and be aware how my little country looks like and how great people and scenic places and hospitality we've got...cheers bro...invite you all just visit our country once....you'll feel what a wonderful journey you have experienced and it will be remembered in your entire life...cheers....
I wasn't trying to be negative. I think that most foreign travelers that watch this won't see it as negative. I'm just telling people what to expect. It's not complaining. I loved Sri Lanka and will go back one day.
Itchy Feet on the Cheap it's ok.....I apologize from you for my misunderstanding....welcome you whenever you visit us.....but next time I hope you'll choose the best accommodation, transportation etc.....you know...c u....cheers...again sorry....I also tried to convey that in my country it's not that much harsh....thumb up...cheers...
it is important to learn from the "other" point of reference without seing it as something bad!!!
The internet’s still better than Australia’s.
+thilo T really? Why's that?
Itchy Feet on the Cheap it’s slow as here. Sri Lanka’s should be better as most of the latest tech is there for the purpose of being experimented, which is the case for most small countries
CAN CONFIRM, Home in AUS gets 4.5Mbps (nbn rollout still underway), ADSL2 in parents home in SL (not near any big city) 16Mbps
To be honest, Sri Lanka's most internet connections are faster than the U.S. and Canada's regular home broadband internet, especially the fibre optic lines that are getting popular have amazing speeds (around 40-80 Mbps) that I haven't even experienced in big institutes in the U.S. (such as universities). If you stayed in a lot of smaller hotels (often referred to as "Guest Houses"), they probably have cheap internet connections that is shared between all guests.
Agreed!!
Good Job. Very informative . Can't understand why there are over 200 dislikes. I think you were honest and positive overall.
I dont think you'll get anything good for cheap prices in any country. If you want good quality service you need to pay more. Most of the free wifi is always slow in sri lanka. And if you realy want seats on a train try booking Exporail , Rajadhani express you'll get a good quality service. Uber is cheaper than other countries. See whether the tuk tuks have meters before getting in so they cant overcharge you and make sure you remind them to turn it on. Use PICKME (pickme is a app like uber) app if for tuk tuk bookings they cant overcharge when you use that.
Last part was really helpful. Will be there next week... yeeeee
cheer up man you're on holiday! i have been to Sri Lanka and you gotta just put up with things like having dhal spilt over you on a train or a wild elephant stopping traffic. In fact often it is the more unfortunate events that make for the best stories years later.
I loved it. I'm all about adventure. Sorry if this video seemed a little down, but I was just trying to give people a heads-up about what it was like there compared to other popular tourist destinations in Asia.
Thank you for visiting Sri Lanka..come back soon.
Good Health and Happiness to you all.
there are many transportation options available such as pick me, uber, etc... even most of locals use them because of safety & reliability. as a Sri Lankan we think its fair prices. Buses are busy during the rush hours (before and after the school / office work) anyway thank you for visiting Sri Lanka 🙏🙏🙏
Will be visiting Sri Lanka soon and I appreciate your video, very informative.
Don't use regular tuk tuk in srilanka..if you wanna ride in a tuk tuk just use uber or pivk me. Even we are srilankans sometimes we also get scammed by these tuk tuk drivers.. use public transportation and it will save you few bugs. Hope you liked visiting our county and hope you'll come again. 😁
I loved your country and I'd like to come back and travel the north part.
Love from India. Loved Sri Lanka. Been there 2 times.. Lovely
Even a local, the prices you mentioned are really good. 🙄🙄🙄
Sri Lankan men are so good looking
Thank you.
Bro,
*Try to stay in 3,4 or 5 star hotels & use rent a car/ motorbike / hotel transport with a driver
* Find food from some good restaurents
* Buy your own sim card & activate mobile date (Dialog, Airtel)
* Always bring enough money when you travel then you wouldn't be complaining
We all love our country but its not perfect we all know that too. He is just sharing his experience. Without shitting on everything just learn to take take the positive aspect of criticism. Commenting like you just came out of the jungle wont help tourism grow or give our country a good reputation.
I can not agree that internet is slow. Maybe in jungle, but in most places it was always 4G (if you use local sim card, which cost 10$ for 200 miniutes worldwide, 10GB of broadband).
Very informational! love it! subbed! Excited to see more upcoming vlogs!
Divert Living but I request you do not follow this vlog only bcz he has stayed and had transportation modes veryyyyyy cheap ones...soo you get what you pay broo....cheers....
Hey mate, it's funny you took off and he didn't. Replying to comments is a huge part of UA-cam. Got to reconnect with your Channel. Respect For Riel.....
Internet isn't that slow in Sri Lanka, But may be in some Airbnb places you stayed, My wifi gets between 20-42mbps.
When an entire hotel's worth of people are on it it's slow. Sometimes I would get up really early when everyone else is sleeping and it would be fast.
You said you hired a car for a trip that took 2 1/2 hours (90 Kilometers) for 35 dollars. And the bus would have cost a fraction of the cost, but that was a really awful comparison for a tourist who in their home country would have paid significantly more for the same journey. As a traveler you have to compare it with what you have back home, if its significantly more than what you would pay back home, then its a scam. For example, If you had taken an Uber for a 2 1/2 hour in the US, it would have cost you at least 75-100 dollars, so 35 dollars is pretty cheap for a private car. You said you went backpacking, but it doesn't look like that to me. There is a huge difference between being a cheap traveler, roughing it as it is with most backpackers (which you didnt do) AND being a cheap/petty person. You are the latter. As a person who has travel to over 50 countries, i don't think i would take any of your recommendations and the only thing i liked about your video is all the people below who provided their input. Ive never been to sri lanka, but have been to other under developed countries and this looks pretty nice in comparison to other places I've been to. Your video just came off as a complaint. I would change your tone on your next video. Take some notes, on how to make a video from this guy next time: ua-cam.com/video/epmQYVLvnjU/v-deo.html.
35 dollars isn't bad - I think I even said that in the video - but if I compare it to the place I live, it's expensive because I live in China. If you're a big traveler that's been to 50 countries, wouldn't you rather get a comparison to other similar countries? If I just compared it to America, everything would just be really inexpensive in that part of the world.
I watched the video you suggested and I think the guy did a good job making it, but when it comes to transportation he just suggests getting private cars the whole time. Personally, I don't feel like I can say I've experienced a country unless I've rode on the public transit system, taken local buses, etc. Sure, I warn people that they are cramped and hot, but I'm just stating facts. It doesn't mean I'm against them. In the other video, the guy says the same thing I did, but he just avoided them and I rode them to feel what it would be like.
I'm sorry you felt that the video was a complaint. I really loved Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka is by FAR the best country to visit in South Asia! If you are a picky first world country tourist that will have an attitude then you will not enjoy it. Even the A/C busses will not be as cool as the busses in USA. Get over it! It’s a 3 rd world country. If you want luxury like that go to Europe.
If you are down for a gem 💎 of natural beauty, nice people, delicious food and breathtaking views go there!!
I am Mexican and I love, love Sri Lanka.
I am sri lankan all he said is true but the bus service is great. He could have used a A/C bus service or semi luxuary bus service which charge double the price but no crowd gets on. The crowd is limited. I disagree on the complain he maid on the bus service.
@@LankanAussie First of all learn to make a decent comment. Do you really have to use the F word? Get lost.
Can’t expect good things to come buy if you are on budget. Stop complaining about an amazing country that have a lot to offer if you put some money into it. Go to work and get rich so you can enjoy. I know where you live. I am typing this in the same section of the city we are in. I am watching you. Sweet nightmares!
😁😁😂 superb comment I've ever seen
Agreed
Thank you < absolutely right
Sri lanka is awesome country and beautiful country ever i see
Thank you. You could add that certain people prey on insufficiently suspicious holidaymakers by operating scams. Beware! :)
You are mostly welcome to sri lanka bro..!!
Yes, alcohol and cigarettes are expensive i have to admit that but its not good for health though..!! :)
However in a small amount of time you can see lots of things in here mainly the climate change, eco difference, larger wild life( yes we are gifted with that) also you missed the gorgeous elephants, also you have to visit nuwa elila, kandy, sigiriya( which is the rock fortress), Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Galle fort ( magnificent site to see) Hikkaduwa, White water rafting in kithulgala, we have tons of water falls ( visit my channel), tones of view points etc..
My airbnbs in Lisbon (I have 4 flats) offer shampoo, if you ever decide to visit Portugal :-) Thanks for all your tips, I plan to visit Sri Lanka ins 2019.
Sure Elsa. Will consider your flat when I visit Lisbon.
Guys, surprising to hear such comments about Sri Lanka. It’s a paradise island!
If you're traveling on road in a city area, Avoid 6.30-7.45 am and 12.30 - 2.30 pm and 5.00 - 7.30 pm. In those times, roads are usually crowded.
As a Sri Lankan, I recommend not to visit popular places in SL, because they are crowded and usually scammers are there. If you really want to visit one of those famous places, go on a weekday. Weekends or holidays are very crowded with locals.
But there are so many beautiful places that has not revealed by travelers. Many of them are isolated.
Thanks for the tips. When I go back to SL I will definitely follow this advice. The first time in a country is a little intimidating, so going to popular areas makes it easier.
Just to make a clarification there - Buses owned by the government (Red ones) are way faster than the private ones and the cost is the same except for the A/C ones.
Thanks for clarifying. The A/C ones are pretty rare I think. We only took one. It was still cheap and not as packed, but pretty slow still.
Itchy Feet on the Cheap That's true. The A/C ones are rare. What I actually meant was that red buses don't stop and wait at bus stops for a long time while the private ones wait upto a maximum of 20min which is a lot of time. Unless you wanna kill some time, you should probably get on a red bus :)
@@itchyfeetonthecheap AC ones are rare because its not economical outside colombo and few urban areas becuase people still choose cheeper option non AC. Specially.u were in Hambantota district pretty much rural agrarian economy so people can't afford expensive options
Thank you so much for sharing good information!! :DThis is very useful for me before I visit Sri Lanka this winter
Dont expect luxury spending less
Thank you for visiting Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 🤝 ❤❤
Thank you for visiting my country.
Thanks for having me. Your country is incredible.

the fuck....
Thanks so much. Very helpful. Travelling in a month !
be careful in street market example king coconut one is only 50 rs...but someone sale to foreigners 150rs
Hi Anyone can state their own opinion.....budget is budget I saved up and visited sri teice ehen I had a good job ...stayed in 5 star eith driver all my trips included eent back in guest jouses also very good ..went to yala but also other eildlife sanctuaries ewhere I could and they were trips of a lifetime...was not much to do at night but was really hot so didnt care wonderful and eould do it all again
Great information as usual, all the important stuff.
I wonder if any sci-fi/Arthur C. Clarke fans make pilgrimages to his former home in Sri Lanka?
Just came from a two weeks holiday from SL. A police officer stopped our privately hired car and requested for a ride share. It was a very uncomfortable feeling. Our tour driver couldn’t say no. Just watch out for these unexpected things. Other than that superb place to visit
Grey Phantome normally police here don't stop vehicles to get a ride. Maybe he knew your driver so he gave him a ride, you probably didn't understand what happened because of the language gap. Anyway our country is very different from western countries so you will experience things you are not used to.
SL weera
I understand Sinhalese perfectly but since living overseas for nearly 25 years the experience was unexpected. Btw The driver is the same one we hire every year. He just couldn’t say no. it’s my home and always will be. But I didn’t like the fact the cop just asked for a ride in a private car. Even if the driver knew the cop he should have asked us before letting a stranger into the car as we hired the car through Casons and paid a premium daily rate. Nevertheless I love this country
nah bro, happened to me too, the officer who asked me was pretty polite though and it was super late so no ill feelings.
Sonal Perera
Fair enough just wasn’t used to it
What do you mean by driver couldn't say no? Nobody can get into a vehicle without permission. Did he say no? Or you just assumed that he didn't because he couldn't?
Have to say though that sri lanka has five star luxury if you are willing to pay the price...of course the price will be more if you want great services it is like that in every country...these things you mentioned in the video are issues u face when you go for the cheaper option...we have got some amazing hotels...great transport especially for tourist who are willing the pay the price ..I mean tissa to ella transport price is very cheap in a locals perspective...just because sri lanka is a devoloping nation does not mean everything is cheap...
thank you for visiting sri lanka
Don’t expect all facilities in different countries. It depends. If you’re creating a bad picture about a particular country definitely it bad. If you can’t deal with culture weather nature or if you’re disgust so don’t travel. Just stay at home.
You should check out what happened to Sihanoukville in Cambodia when the chinese built hotels, casinos and other ''cool'' stuff.
I was in sihanoukville a long time ago and I'm actually moving to Cambodia this summer, so I'll be going back to see how it has changed.

Itchy Feet, as many of the other commenters have stated, you get what you pay for. Sri Lanka is a beautiful and friendly country, but it is a developing nation. Many locals rely on tourism to increase their livelihood due to the significantly rising cost of life in the country. The currency conversion is roughly Rs180 to 1 USD. While I agree that some of the 5 star hotels are expensive, excellent quality food, mobile wifi and transportation options can be purchased for a fraction of the price it would cost in a more developed country in the west - or even other parts of Asia. By scrimping and trying to see the country 'on the cheap' as you are, you are not contributing to the Sri Lankan economy or its people! In fact you are contributing less than a local Sri Lankan tourist, living in Sri Lanka would do! Tourists like you are not helping the country and in fact , you are perpetuating a new type of economic pillage. You are haggling and trying to get the most out of poor people who are trying to make ends meet to feed their children and parents. I have spoken with many little 'kade' (small restaurant owners), and tuk tuk drivers, many of whom say that tourists such as yourself act as if you were poorer than they are! While bargaining is fine, there is a limit to how aggressive you should be. I have heard stories of western tourists haggling over the price of a bread bun! (Something that no local would ever dream of doing!)Just as we consumers in the west pay more for ethically sourced clothes and food, we should be more ethical about our tourism choices when abroad. ( and don't argue that you are buying direct from the source- you may be- but at a much cheaper price and less profit for that source who's livelihood depends on this! I'm not saying you should not backpack in Sri Lanka. By all means, please do. The locals are kind and are cultured to be polite and helpful to all, more so , those they perceive as disadvantaged. They will welcome you whether you are a prince or a pauper. Please don't abuse that generosity of spirit that is inherent in the Sri Lankan culture. Please also remember that you can have a wonderful time here at a significantly cheaper price than many other countries if you stay in 3 star hotels and take upgraded local transportation options. Please don't complain and post videos about not getting a 5 star experience on a less than basic budget! PS. with regards to your concerns about the stray dogs, being a buddhist country , they don't euthanize the dogs. You are more than welcome to make an online donation to one of the many Sri Lankan animal welfare charities that are trying to give these animals a decent home.
7:51 alchohol is easy to find but expensive because lots of poor families stuggle from alcoholism so it is discouraged. Coffee is hard to find because we are more tea people than coffee. There is good cafes in Colombo outside of Colombo not much. Internet slow, public transportation is crowded and sucks yess cuz we are still developing economy we have our struggles. Please have a smile and enjoy because in 10 years things will.become more expensive. Cheers
Actually tuktuks and pickme are cheap..I mean I go everywhere in them...buses and trains are verrrry cheap..that is because it is a govt service for most part...
great video! :) yes of course>Super cheap bus rides !!!! :) I prefer (red)government buses for a fast ride! :)
Elle Taylor 😂😂 thanks
Everythings are there lots of place s are there sigiria beaches botanical garden lots
Good country
Thank you for visiting our paradise island!
Great video and very helpful. We spent 6 days in Sri Lanka, mainly Galle, and enjoyed it. Check out our last video in Galle Sri Lanka and tell s what you think?
thank you for visiting sri lanka and I apologise as a sri lankan for some difficulties. probably our government should improve the service quality for the foriegn visitors.thanks for this video and hope you visit again our country.
No need to apologize. I think there is a difference in our cultures. When I say something negative, for example about the transportation, I don't mean it as a complaint - I mean it as a warning to western travelers. I just want them to know what to expect. But I enjoyed riding the local buses. And when I felt like it was too much, I took a private car. I loved your country and I'll certainly be back one day.
Beautiful forests like willpatthu and sripaadha forest is now cutting down by ministers of srilankan govenment. Most people in srilanka love nature , but not the govenment . They sell valuable nature spots. How can they increases tourism like this.
:(
Slow internet? Were you trying to access the free WiFi spots at the stations? Since you are looking just for cheap options I wouldn't be surprised! 😂😂😂
Backpacking is living in hostels eating cheap food and using public transportation. Thanks for the video

Are u describing about a travel video or a funeral?
What a dull presentation.
You live in DONGGUAN cuz I see you in some restaurant in here. Betcha know Dynacity. You Yanks like American foods so I recommend Pals, One for the Road, or some bars. There are some pretty lit bars round here to pick up some chicks ya know
Most of this makes no sense to me. Where is DONGGUAN? What is Dynacity? I'm not American. I think you're confused.
Thanks
hi man i want to vist sri lanka any advice am very scare
First tip, don't be scared homey. Find an itinerary online and follow it. It will make it easier and you won't have to worry about going to any places that isn't setup for tourists. The tourist areas are all very easy to travel.
2.08 Elephants u missed elephants. The biggest land animal 🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘😤😤😤😤😤
wellcome to srilanka
I would definitely say you did not back packing in sri lanka. You were a typical tourist. Say i can see you stayed in nice hotels and use kind of rich stuff. If you really want to see the true sri lanka. DO NOT GO TO places which are highly populated with tourists. Hire a scooter for one month and Travel by couchsurfing and doing AIRBnB. We recently went to Poonagala. Which will be next ella in near future. Place is filled with un touched beauty of Mother Nature. Its Surrounded with a small village. You will never meet these things with 2 weeks of vacation. Make sure if they are true before you make contents of my country. I am not pissed. I feel like this video is a real JOKE. sitting in a hotel room and talking in front of the camera does not make u a backpacker. Go to the real life and shoot it Mr itchy :) No offense.
I don't understand your complaint. You call me a typical tourist, but that's what this video is about - me telling the typical traveler what it was like from a western point of view. This video isn't called Off the Tourist Trail in Sri Lanka or something like that. Would you watch a video about cats and be angry that there are no dogs in it?
ASIYA highly recommend this because I’ve seen tons of tourists using scooter and traveling all around nuwara eliya ella badulla etc... im pretty sure they are enjoying it way more than using busses and useless tuks
exactly

ha haa
Sri Lanka is NOT built for budget tourism ,they are expecting wealthy tourists with all those star hotels around the country , but it is high time that they focus on budget tourists as well
I think it's cheap enough and with airbnb you can get some really great places. Guesthouses are a much better option than hotels.
5,500 LKR for hiring a car from Tissa to Ella is unbelievably cheep, way cheaper than hiring a tul-tuk. That price is not even offered to locals, must have been a special tourist price. . It is about 30 USD for 90 km. Why do not you compare and complain. It is not the car was expensive, the bus was dirty cheep. Because buses are heavily subsidized by the Government for the benefit of citizens, and, on the other hand, they pay their taxes to be entitled to entertain these benefits. Tourists are not expected to exploit those benefits and complain. though are most welcome in Sri Lanka. They have many transport options like renting a car or motorbike. The problem is some cheep terrorists try to live way cheaper than an average local would live. That is quite evident in many parts and places frequented by tourists. It is like keeping the cake and eating the cake.
wow!!
Why did you come to Sri Lanka?????
I also found the people of Sri Lanka not so honest with tourists. They regard them there for the taking.
You really haven’t researched about Sri Lanka prior your visit. This is a bad video guide to people who are planning to visit the beautiful Sri Lanka. A good research on google is important before visiting rather than you complaining and highlighting the cons.
How many times have you traveled to Sri Lanka as a person not from Sri Lanka?
Itchy Feet on the Cheap Im from Sr Lanka
Hi ,thanks for the video)let me ask what about tap water IS safe for Wash the mouth ir not ? Cause in india not ?
I don't know. I think if you just brush your teeth with it and spit it out it should be ok.
You look really sad like you lost something, cheer up dude
Hi. Can you tell me what camera you used for this video please? Thanks in advance
Canon 60D for the pretty stuff, gopro for most of the shots of me.
Busses will not charge random charges. There is a tarrif.
I know, but a man at the bus station asked us where we were going and then took us to the bus, sat us down, and asked for the money. He asked for a lot more than what the bus charged, then paid the driver and took the extra cash. He was pretending that he worked for the bus, but I think he was just a man who could speak English and knew he could make some money from
foreign travelers.
Then its not for the bus you paid for! He was ripping you off.
Sri Lanka has a lot more to offer. It is a paradise. This video does not show the breathtaking views of its golden beaches, tea estates etc. And my gosh,, talk about Sri Lankan food.
It seems your complaining a lot about everything Sri Lianka has to offer.... It's a 3rd world company, who's biggest earner is tourism. Sri Lanka was the #1 tourist destination of 2018 till it plummeted after the disgraceful people that ruined the country's offering to the world by their bombs. I have been a tourist in SL numerous times, ive also lived in SL, i can tell you that the transport has never changed other than better trains over time and the introduction of Uber and Lyft, if you want to travel a nicer form of transport maybe a third world isn't the best destination for you. Additionally, if you dont want to share your time with locals then dont stay in cheap motels, stay in like advised AirB&B's or hotels. As for a woman eating dhall over your lady's head, well i would have given the woman a piece of my mind and told her to move. Im actually half Sri Lankan and i dont tolerate such behaviour, i do believe manners and organisation are lacking but not something that cant be learnt. If im honest i feel you video depicts SL in a bad light, when i do believe its an amazing place, i call it my paradise and will always tell others how beautiful it is.
I loved SL. But this video is for people looking to backpack the country. It's just a heads-up about what to expect. No need to be butt sore about it. The term third world country isn't really used anymore, but if you still want to use it - I've lived in first, third, and even second world countries before, so I am familiar and comfortable with all of them.
Sorry about your bad experiences in Sri Lanka. Government is not paying enough attention to remove negative effects for tourism. Hope it will be improved.
I didn't have a bad experience. I loved it.
Mate us backpackers don't spend $30 a night on hotels!
I love this video! I'll be going back to Sri Lanka in May. May I ask which airline you flew to get there?
+Holly Blair Air China. I went direct from Chengdu.

I feel so sorry for what some people in our country is doing for greed. Absolutely disgusting. And it's not just the tourists there locals also get scammed sometimes from my experience.
