    Hey Dean, That car is a GL model from what I know of 240s. The Corona wheels, sunroof, tachometer that's missing, and the electric windows all mean a GL model 240. Good save! If the seats have the rear pockets on the back then it's def a GL.

    I actually thought this was a two tone model similar to which I had owned many years ago, it looks fantastic, nice find. That black mould looks like it preserved the paint work from the elements. Wish I had found this but would be hard as I am 5000 miles away in Northern Europe.

    • @DeanofMachines
      @DeanofMachines  6 місяців тому +3

      I thought the same thing initially. The black goo on top looked some what like tar. I could barely scratch it off with a finger nail. The paint on the roof/hood/trunk is scratched and sun faded quite a bit. Well beyond the polishing point.
      It does clean up nicely as a survivor though!

      Are you sure a really thorough cut n polish wouldn’t cut the scratches n sun damage out?
      I’ve seen paint jobs that I thought were done and just gave a cut n polish a try anyway for the hell of it and it came up like new!

    I was hit by a last series Volvo Amazon in factory plastics in 1970 when I was 10 years old.
    The car was in a car shop in the same house where I lived as a child.
    I hung out there and admired this solid car with room for long legs and the car was quite impressive.
    Later, PV-544 Volvos and Amazons as well as 140 serials were tuned with 45 mm double webers and the C-cam and larger intake valves were machined into the cover etc.
    An infinitely strong car, e.g. the gearbox can withstand tremendous torque as standard.
    I wonder why Volvo has compromised on legroom, e.g. the V50 Volvo has no rear legroom at all?
    These Volvos also have good door handles like the V70 MK2 Volvo too. Works better in winter than the pull-out handle.
    Good Swedish!
    Now I'm driving my third V70, which is a MK3 2.5 AFV. Bifuel. DAS car too!

      @@DeanofMachines It was a GLE not I but it’s an injection too not a GLi. In Western countries cars are like fashion & many people’s ego cannot stand being seen by others driving what’s perceived as an old out of fashion car it’s got to be the latest model with all the toys etc Also some people abandon cars when things go wrong & if they cannot fix it themselves or have no tools or money to get someone else to fix the car, people die or have accidents or go to jail or move away & so many other factors that can explain why cars get abandoned? In some countries like in the UK 🇬🇧 every year a car over 3 years old needs to get an inspection to check it is roadworthy sometimes the bill to make it roadworthy is not economically viable? @@DeanofMachines Volvo pretty much built the same car (In DL or GL trim levels) but in different exterior and interior colours and any options that the buyer wanted were added by the dealership. It wasn't like buying a GM, Chrysler or Ford product where you checked off the box of what options you wanted installed at the factory and then waited 6 weeks for your car to be delivered to the dealership. It was a much different - and perhaps simpler - ordering process. If you wanted a sunroof, air, alloy wheels, metallic paint, etc., then you ordered a GL. If you didn't then you ordered a DL.

  • @HolzMichel
    @HolzMichel 6 місяців тому

    those aluminium wheels are definitely original to the GL, there were 2 or 3 different styles to choose from. the steel wheels came standard on the DL, they're good for swapping out for winter tires as the aluminium wheels suffered from pitting when exposed to the various snow melt treatments such as salt, calcium chloride etc. i wouldn't change out the head lights as the round ones were on '75 thru '77 model years. 1978 was the year they went to the square quads. the '79 264 GL i used to have, had the quad squares, so if you're looking to keep the car as original as possible that's something to consider. the GL came with all the bells and whistles: AC, power windows, power mirrors, leather seats w adjustable lumbar support, (drivers seat heated) although cloth seats were optional, 4 speaker AM/FM radio w cassette deck and power antenna (had to be raised with a button in the console), hand cranked sunroof, heated rear windshield, chrome grill and headlight bezels, central locking systems didn't come in until the late '80's
    something to note: the cooling system is a closed system in those things. they work great, but it's imperative to have all of the air purged out the system before running the engine. the original radiators don't have a cap so the only way to know if the system is full is by checking the reservoir. if there is any air at all in the system, the engine will tend to overheat and you'll have a real mess on your hands. you'll want to jack up the car in the front on the passenger side so the air can collect at the outlet of the overflow spout of the radiator and then suck it out with a vacuum pump. running the engine will not get all of the air out of the radiator
    edit: the 80's model 240 GL came stock with the B23 engine and automatic transmission on the US market, the 5 speed manual transmission (4 speed with an overdrive) was optional. the DL models were equipped with the B21 with either 4 speed manual, 5 speed manual or automatic. other engine options were a straight 6 diesel (only available for 3 or 4 yrs) and the V6 B27F which gave the car the 262, 264 and 265 designation. the 262 was the bertone coupe, the 264 the 4 door sedan and the 265 - the wagon... not many of the 265 wagons were built. maybe a handful. i've seen a few around Ramstein AB when they came out but none since. the 262 coupe first came out in '78 and was discontinued in 1984. there were also some two door V6 sedan GL's built but those are also pretty rare birds. the B27F was an aluminium block, cast iron sleeved engine and not many of them survived more than 100k miles. mine managed to put a little over 250k on it but was it stolen in Toledo and was still a good running engine at the time...
    i really liked the 200 series volvos..they ran from '75 thru late '80's and were probably the best they ever put out. although the 164 and 1800 were really cool in their styling

    These are great cars. I owned a 1981 244 DL (2.1l) for 25 years and covered 300k miles. We tend to get more rust here in the UK, so that eventually finished it off. I now have an 850, which I have owned for 30 years (220k miles). My view is that although the 200s were far more durable than the competition here in the UK in their day, the 850 is the slightly more reliable and durable car.

You'd think we'd have a lot of them, but it's the other way around. They were basicly just scrapped or used in destruction derby-like races. And the quad lights were american market only so they are sought after as well.
