After witnessing his aunt Danearys devastating Kings Landing and her army refusing to spare Lannister men who already have surrendered. Simply went against his moral code being raised as a Stark.

The only reason Jon didn't want to be the king he was is because Dumb and Dumber don't know a thing about a character développement. Jon refusing to be king when he hole life was to protect the living and standing up for the little guy is as constant than Jaime saying he never cared about the "them, innocent or otherwise"... when he killed the Mad King to save millions of people... Jon is Ned's son at least in his spirit and he is supposed to do the right thing, regardless his feelings : that's why he lead a party to kill the rebel Crows at Craster's keep, became Lord Commandant even if he wanted Sam not to speak on his behalf, lead the Battle of the Bastards to free Winterfell, became King in the North, even if he never asked for it... So the guy who did all that would have accepted to become king even without any claim if the people asked... but when the ask and it's revealed that is even his duty, he will refuse ?
