hello, horticultor here! i would not use any wood of any kind in a greenhouse! most likely that old wood already houses organisms that you do not want in your greenhouse, for your plants' sake. and moreover, i just do not recommend having anything wood in a greenhouse because of humidity and whatnot. most of the time not good for plants, that's why metal and glass are more commonly used
Wow, that does make sense. Imagine the chemicals that have touched those shelves too. We can easily forget that hygiene is important in the garden too, ie sterilising your Secateurs after every use, etc.
That piece you called trash I believe is a corbel, which goes into the top corner of a doorway for decoration. They are much in demand by people who like old things. If you can find more, they would add a neat touch to your building.
Hello , nothing better than going through an old store with all those treasures. One thing we did was take a bunch of the cool paper work and made a large collage on a wall and had it covered with glass. Every time we walk by it it always reminds us of the journey we went through to get our property complete. Keep up the great work 👍
Looking good...hey Em the wood thats been laying around for years might have termites, or carpenter ant's. Store it someplace where they can't eat your investment, and use it for kindling... IMHO..Lol. Good job girl, It's going to be a great place. ✌️❤️😁

Some of those old advertising posters, calendars, date books, etc., might be worth something to a collector. Be sure to find and check with an appraiser before you throw anything away, unless it's really completely deteriorated. Also, consider putting a 2x4 along the step to help roll your wheelbarrow over it more easily.
Emma make sure to use a metal detector where the floor is missing, not telling what fell thru the cracks. On my 2 old buildings when I was re doing the floors I found all sorts of things including some very old coins :-D
I would keep the wood and make a decorative wall with it..take the nails out,sand it down then white wash the wood or color of your choice and hang the old pictures and some of the other great finds.
One thing to keep in the back of your mind as you go along in this journey is this is a marathon and not a race. Each day you're one step closer to the finish line and it's perseverance that gets you there. Love where you're going with this Emma
3:50 you should put some tin behind your wood stove all the way up to keep you walls from getting to hot and it will help reflect the heat back into the building.
If the wood is good quality, you could clean up the duck and the bear and finish them off with some sanding and use them for cutting boards. You can seal them with food grade mineral oil.
In the last video, you thought you heard footsteps upstairs. Maybe it is a good idea to place a camera and a motion detection system with an app to your phone. That way, there will be no surprises and make you feel more calm/save 👍. Anyway - Great finds and good progress 👏.

I would save that wood too. Infact, I repurposed mine and made shelves in my garage and lined the tops with left over hardwood flooring, it worked out great!

I learned from doing estate sales and having booths in shops start in one corner and work your way around to clear things. It saves hoping around from area to area. Line up your bins and fill them up put lids on and put id cards on the front to help id what is in them. Good luck
I have bought and emptied 9 old buildings. I agree. It also helps with my ADHD tendencies. It's so easy to get distracted. I also use a wheeled trash can system for anything that isn't fragile. One for trash. One for donation. One for keepers that need attention like washing. You can just toss into the appropriate can as you go. Saves many steps...
My great grandmother kept those ledgers for her household and I have them. It’s so cool to see what they spent money on and how much things cost. They were early purchasers of an automobile and they referred to the pastime of driving adventures as “sporting” when reporting the cost of gas.
You cleaning up the old store, reminded me of the time I helped clean out an old house. And found old news papers, one from the day after Pearl harbor. I wanted to save them but the boss just threw them away..
If you don't sell that old freezer (wouldn't surprise me if it still works) set it out back next to where you're building the greenhouse. Open the drain plug & fill with soil. Buy a container of earthworms and feed them your scraps.... worm castings are an excellent fertilizer for plants. Leave the lid closed during rainy & bad weather. Open on nice sunny days. ❤

In a situation like this where you'll be working on projects there for years, you do need a certain amount of scrap wood stored up for those random little needs here and there. Just have it laid out ready to be picked up and put to task.
That cheese grinder would make a nice lamp. Think of the lamps above the kitchen island in “That 70s show”. I made one myself but the rusted version would look nicer 😊
Good progress! Getting the floor cleared is always a great start so has to let your eyes and mind see to layout of the room, along with making it easier to maneuver around. Those large cooler are probably not worth saving along with other large heavy items they should be hauled off to the dump/landfill. The wife and I love watching the progress. Best wishes wish we were closer to volunteer with the clear out. We’re both retired and always find it rewarding to do that hunk of stuff.

Emma, love the channel, I subbed. Find an old 55gal plastic barrel, cut the top off and use that to throw all the trim wood into. So much easier than trying to use the wheel barrow to navigate around. I look forward to future finds. Dont throw old stuff out without some research.. You have some jems for sure!
Keep doing the toast to your mom, she is watching over you. It’ll always be difficult when talking about her, but it eases up a bit after some time. There are days when it just hits you all at once and other days you can talk obsessively. My daughter and I visited my mom’s grave just after Christmas and we both broke down, it has been 8 years and it still hurts. It never goes away, you just learn to live with it. Maybe with some of that wood someone can build you frames for those pictures you found and are keeping. Pull the nails and see if it can be used for picture frames.
Set a box on the curb marked free before throwing some things away. One item was either a corner bracket or shelf bracket that someone could use. I think one item was maybe a wheel not sure.
The N95 mask is good for particulates but you need the respirator for the mold. I too save wood, in fact I have a 12x20 shed just for wood. It's invaluable and has saved me a lot of money over the years.
If you are dealing with mold, you need a full-face respirator, a suit, gloves. Leave no skin exposed. I would also want to be aware of lead and asbestos in that place, but a full hazmat suit would not make for a good video.
Believe it might be hard getting so much advice from your followers. Most are offering with only your best interest in mind and likely from the perspective of their own experiences. Do consider the suggestion for appropriate work gear. Mold, varmit poo and other contaminents are genuine concerns. Gloves and footwear are important. The best advice my husband and I received was to create two areas: Germany, which was a strictly maintained spot to keep tools and supplies. Switzerland is where you have a clean, protected place for respite (food, washing, rest and personal care). Thank you for sharing your journey with us!
You might want to take a closer look at some of that wood before burning. Chestnut and Cherry were pretty common back in that store's era...BTW, those marks in that one board could be from termites.
Great adventure you are having!! 😊 The Momma in me is coming out here, hope you don't mind... PLEASE wear the horrible respiratory mask, it will save your lungs. Mold spores will go through the N95. Also, keep your work boots at the site that way you never forget them and wear your Uggs! A nail in the foot is not something you want. You also can remove mold from papers/boxes. It's easy and framing the old advertisements and sealing the old boxes with a varnish would be really cool. Well done, it is going to be an amazing space 😊
I just love that old building. It is so cool. You never know what you might find. If I wasn't so far away, I would love to help you. Just keep plugging along.
You can fog the building with Chlorine Dioxide to kill mold. I use the Vital Oxide brand in a Fogmaster Jr. fogger. It blows the liquid out in a very fine mist that gets into all the small spaces. It's FDA certified for no-rinse wipedown of food preparation surfaces and when it dries it breaks down to leave no toxic residue. It's not harmful for skin contact but don't breathe the fog. For your building I'd put the fogger with a full tank on a tall ladder and run an extension cord outside. Plugging up all the holes and gaps you can keeps the fog inside. Open all cabinet doors and drawers so the fog can get in. When it's emptied the tank, unplug the cord and let it sit for a day so the fog will all settle and break down. With the piles of stuff in the building I'd still wear a mask while cleaning it out but a lot of the active mold and spores will be dead. Chlorine Dioxide keeps mold from coming back because it's a sporicide. New mold spores have to come in with the right conditions for them to grow. When the building is all empty fog it again. Same story with the upstairs, with a tarp to block off the elevator so the fog doesn't all run down to the main floor.
I bought a cabin with everything left in it and a 2 car garage. Still have a ton to go through but could not believe the awesome treasures ( moose antlers and fish plates) but a little freaked by other items ( what is that mystery substance in the barrel??) have fun

You might want to consider contacting your closest or local Historical Society and see if they would like any of the older stuff that you are not interested in keeping for yourself

An Air Locker AP700 denailer gun is $55 on Amazon. It will pop nails out of wood quick and easy. Get all the nails out then the boards can be planed smooth and even thickness.
65 degrees Fahrenheit or 18.3°C Celsius is indeed nice weather. It's currently 5°C or 41 degrees Fahrenheit out here in the Netherlands🇳🇱, also a nice temperature, in my opinion. Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit lived in the Netherlands🇳🇱 btw. He gave chemistry at a college here in Amsterdam in 1718 and joined the Dutch Royal Society in 1724,... just an fyi. But we Dutch do use Celsius.
Also Emma. Have your dad help you here: put up some hravy duty plastic in those 2 front windows. Then, put some hinges and latches on the plywood currently covering the space. Make them swing inward so you can keep people out by latching from the inside. Evem split them in half, making them easier to swing on lighter duty hinges. That natural lighting will put pep in your step, trust me, and the clear plastic will keep the wind out.

That respirator is more for blocking vapors like for painting or working with chemicals. It does work for particulates also but is a little overkill. A regular dust mask like that KN 95 you were wearing would work just fine and is less cumbersome.
Always interesting! 😀 That wood box that might be mouldy: spray with bleach and put it in the sun. Probably be fine. Also, With the price of wood these days, I’d save as much as reasonable for possible reuse later. 👍
Not “carpenter bee” wood… Cypress. When it looks like that, it’s called “pecky cypress”, or “greenhouse peck”, used in greenhouses. Generally found along rivers or lakes as they love water. Very chic in the 1950’s. Pecky cypress can be seen in a popular TV show of that time “Perry Mason”, on his office walls. It was also very desirable for use in recording studios as it had good acoustical characteristics. 👍 over harvested and sort of rare these days.
Good decision on keeping the bear and the duck. Things that seem mundane or innocuous at the moment may become features when you start putting everything back together and decorating. It’s really amazing how much usable stuff or original parts you will find in old buildings. I’ve done a few and I feel your pain. Be careful and don’t step on any nails !

I was told once if you put things in a ziploc bag & put it in the freezer it kills the mold (like on books or that box). Worth looking into.

I love the curved shelving in the front probably used for window displays. Would be great for holiday displays.

You can fog the building with Chlorine Dioxide to kill mold. I use the Vital Oxide brand in a Fogmaster Jr. fogger. It blows the liquid out in a very fine mist that gets into all the small spaces. It's FDA certified for no-rinse wipedown of food preparation surfaces and when it dries it breaks down to leave no toxic residue. It's not harmful for skin contact but don't breathe the fog.
For your building I'd put the fogger with a full tank on a tall ladder and run an extension cord outside. Plugging up all the holes and gaps you can keeps the fog inside. Open all cabinet doors and drawers so the fog can get in.
When it's emptied the tank, unplug the cord and let it sit for a day so the fog will all settle and break down.
With the piles of stuff in the building I'd still wear a mask while cleaning it out but a lot of the active mold and spores will be dead.
Chlorine Dioxide keeps mold from coming back because it's a sporicide. New mold spores have to come in with the right conditions for them to grow.
When the building is all empty fog it again. Same story with the upstairs, with a tarp to block off the elevator so the fog doesn't all run down to the main floor.

I bought a cabin with everything left in it and a 2 car garage. Still have a ton to go through but could not believe the awesome treasures ( moose antlers and fish plates) but a little freaked by other items ( what is that mystery substance in the barrel??) have fun
you can use the old wood for the interioer/decoration and other thinks, also when you have to replace thinks in the house

An Air Locker AP700 denailer gun is $55 on Amazon. It will pop nails out of wood quick and easy. Get all the nails out then the boards can be planed smooth and even thickness.

Also Emma. Have your dad help you here: put up some hravy duty plastic in those 2 front windows. Then, put some hinges and latches on the plywood currently covering the space. Make them swing inward so you can keep people out by latching from the inside. Evem split them in half, making them easier to swing on lighter duty hinges. That natural lighting will put pep in your step, trust me, and the clear plastic will keep the wind out.

That respirator is more for blocking vapors like for painting or working with chemicals. It does work for particulates also but is a little overkill. A regular dust mask like that KN 95 you were wearing would work just fine and is less cumbersome.

That wood box that might be mouldy: spray with bleach and put it in the sun. Probably be fine. Also, With the price of wood these days, I’d save as much as reasonable for possible reuse later. 👍

Not “carpenter bee” wood… Cypress. When it looks like that, it’s called “pecky cypress”, or “greenhouse peck”, used in greenhouses. Generally found along rivers or lakes as they love water. Very chic in the 1950’s. Pecky cypress can be seen in a popular TV show of that time “Perry Mason”, on his office walls. It was also very desirable for use in recording studios as it had good acoustical characteristics. 👍 over harvested and sort of rare these days.
Good decision on keeping the bear and the duck. Things that seem mundane or innocuous at the moment may become features when you start putting everything back together and decorating. It’s really amazing how much usable stuff or original parts you will find in old buildings. I’ve done a few and I feel your pain.

I'm thinking pressure washing wood or wipe it down. And design a cool room divider out of the random pieces of wood.
You can always use the wood that you don't know what to do with as kindling for starting your future wood stove or fireplace.
