One Year Renovation an Abandoned Norwegian Farm

  • About 10 years ago we bought a runed down farm on the west coast of Norway. Our goal for this farm was to bring this back from the sorry state it was left in and make this into the farm of our dreams. Through the years we have been working slowly to achieve our goal but in 2024 we decided to kick things into high gear. In this video we are going to bring you along for the entire year, month by month. We start I January 2024 when we were snowed inn for days. Then we continue to February where we sold out tractor and decided that we were going to go all in on this farm. We were going to be sheep farmers. We renovated our garage, revealed some beautiful natural stone stares, put up fences and biggest off all, we started the rebuilt of our barn. This old set of ruins were finally going to be a proper building once more.

    If you never make any money on all your UA-cam work, you and you family will always have such a wonderful video record of your days starting out life in the country and making the very best efforts to be good parents.
    Perhaps a more valuable possession than the money.

    This video was a perfect metaphor for life. It has measured amounts of dreams, determination, hard work, tragedy, perseverance, and community to move in the direction of your desired goals. What a beautiful life you and your family have. Thank you for sharing.

    A pickup truck, a van, or a trailer.
    I’m watching your channel for three reasons. My ancestors came from a failed farm in Norway, so, that was a thing. Seeing you meet problems in a very different way from us Americans is interesting. I like seeing alternative solutions and ideas. And finally, I am really hoping you make the farm pay. You don’t even have to make a living, just…make a small profit. Make that farm productive…which is what you said on your video about UA-cam and profits. I’d love to see someone succeed.
    You’re doing a great job with your English. My wife is German, I speak a little German, she speaks English very well…and you are doing great.
    I like the fact that you figure out your problems and fix them, rather than throwing money at them. Keep doing that! Best of luck, I’ll keep watching you, hoping you keep chasing the dream, and get to where you’re wanting to go.

    This is so fun to watch. Its also lovely to see that farming and homesteading is the same all over the world, with lots of hardwork and reward. Homesteading is a constant work in progress

    You're definitely a hard worker 🙂 But what I like most is your calm approach to unexpected disasters - "Oh, I have a new river and lake around my house... oh well, lets deal with it calmly." 😀 I would have been jumping on my head with steam coming out of my nose at some of the moments in the video 😀 Thanks for a nice example of how one can be calmer when working on unexpected problems on his or her property 🙂

    When you are light sensitive i can a daylight lamp recommend. My girlfriend is very sensitive to the dim light in autumn and winter. As i was buy her one and she used it regularly. Was helping her mood and energy in this times.

    Whewww, that was a lot of hard work. Looks like you’re a farmer. I helped my father farm. That must have been a real windy and wet storm! Sorry about the damage around your place. You have some serious drainage to dig and water diverting walls to build. It’s good that you’re a hard worker. Looks like everything you do is good work, WELL DONE, YOU. Farm work is almost never done. Good luck rebuilding your place. I have confidence in you…from an old veteran, retired in the US, foothills of the Smoky Mountains.

    Even though I've already been watching how much you've done, it's really hard to believe what you have achieved working on your own most of the time. The concrete for the barn was epic, what an achievement, you are going to one day look back and be amazed at what you actually did. Seeing it all in one video also shows just how much the place changed, the pasture is a great example. 👍

    I really enjoyed watching your video. I live in Wales UK and your farming life is pretty similar to ours. I got too old and my health failed me so we've ended up living in a town BUT I look back on my days on the farm with complete and utter satisfaction. I loved the way things had a habit of balancing out where some days you could be reduced to tears and the next day it would be like living in paradise. I wouldn't have changed it for anything and it's a great way to bring up children. We also had a child with a disability so I can sympahise with you. I can't wait for your next video. Good luck!!

    I'm currently visiting Norway for the first time and this video popped up on my feed - even though it's not the kind of thing i'd usually watch! But my mum and I both really enjoyed watching this all the way through. Great pacing and we got so invested in your success and misfortunes. We both thought that my mum's dad, who was a hurdle maker (a special kind of fence for pigs) would have been very impressed at all of your hard work, as were we. How you manage this alongside a job I can't imagine!! Subscribed and looking forward to future updates

    not sure if you want to hear this .. but i learned from an old farmer in Queensland Australia to gather up what we call "chook poop' and to put it in a 44 gallon drum with water and let it 'steep' for about three months (it is high in nitrogen). The other tip was to get all your fish bits (guts and so forth) prawn heads, and you put it in water and let that stew as well. need to have a lid on it because it stinks but the gardens and vege patches do love it. in fact over here they have created a product called 'seasol 'which is basiclly just the seacreature broth. probably has oyster shells in it as well (ground down). I haven't checked.

    • @Arterexius
      @Arterexius Місяць тому +7

      It's honestly a good idea. Here in Denmark where I live, the farmers often just order massive amounts of calcium and distribute it on their fields to get new calcium in the ground. The nitrogen and other stuff is usually obtained from the massive concrete manure tanks the farms also usually have, which also have a lid on for the exact same reason you describe.. Also because the gases are lethal to breathe in.

      Be carful with some of that stuff if it’s to hot do to not being broken down enough it can burn your plants and kill your crops. I grew up on a farm we raised animals and grew crops and waisted nothing . Let’s just say I never made these mistakes because I watched my grandpa and my father make these mistakes. Just be sure you do your home work there is nothing like all the plants you work hard to bring to life die in front of you. I live in the US and hate the way things are today I wish I could go back to the days of you get what you put in.

    • @thevocalcrone
      @thevocalcrone 28 днів тому

      @@chadcoffman1870 that's the point of leaving it to soak in water and drums for a few months because then you use the liquid for your plants as you say its high nitrogen content which is why your plants would have been burned.

    Red: Produced by oxygen atoms at altitudes of 300 to 400 km
    Pink and dark red: Produced by nitrogen molecules at altitudes of around 100 km
    Blue and purple: Produced by hydrogen and helium molecules, but can be difficult to see against the night sky
    Scarlet red: Produced by high altitude oxygen interacting with solar particles, only occurs when the aurora is very energetic

    Cant wait to see the barn transformation . Im a big fan of timber frame structures and have plans of my own to build a sawmill structure so I can mill logs from under a roof. This was suppose to have been started last year but I tore a tendon in my knee that keep me from doing heavy work like moving logs to the sawmill. Good luck in 2025

    Greetings from Germany. Brilliant video. I enjoyed watching and was impressed with your focus and motivation. Might I offer a wee suggestion? Your hay cutting. Build some field drying racks. As the hay is cut, place it on the racks to speed the drying. Even if it rains, they hay is not left on the ground to rot. I will continue to watch and well done on the barn approval!

    So much of your struggle was easy to relate to. I grew up on a farm in Vermont, USA. Keep going!
