Fun fact; the official name of the F-16 is still the Fighting Falcon. It hasn't changed. It was commonly called Viper by F-16 pilots because they thought it looked like the Viper fighters in the original Battlestar Galactica.
Yup, having spent 12 years in the USAF supporting F-16's from late 80's through the 90's, I commonly heard the Pilots refer to them as Vipers still. On paper from General Dynamics however it was the F-16 Viper during development and testing phase(the YF-16). An internal Code name of sorts. The "Fighting Falcon" part was added later by USAF PR Dept and it stuck.
The F-16 has a variant named the Viper that was shown off in 2012 by LM. It's the F-16V. That's what this plane is in the video. It has better avionics and speed to name a few things.
It'll always be the "Fighting Falcon" to me because that's what the picture books I had as a kid called it lol. Man those were great with all the photos from the Gulf War and Allied Force from the 90s.
I cant imagine the F22 ever being on here unless it is essentially an artists rendering using word of mouth from pilots, but it would be so cool to be so stealthy you can fly up under someone.
I personally think Fighting Falcon was a dope name. We already have an attack heli named Viper and a sports car with the same name. Fighting Falcon was a little more unique imo
Even just the Falcon would have been cool. Imma agree with you that Viper fits the AH-1Z much more. Just go watch a video of a falcon flying through dense trees at high speed, tell me that is not a perfect fit for the F16
The past tense is unnecessary since no one changed the plane's name. It's still officially the Fighting Falcon. Viper is an unofficial nickname given by early F-16 pilots because they thought it looked like the fighters (Viper Mk.I) in Battlestar Galactica.
@@ChristianNelsonn Still referred to as the viper by todays pilots as well, not just early ones. Also not just battlestar galactica, but the nose section and that unstable body, pilots say it looks like a snake rearing its head to strike. Ackchyually... You are correct, the EPU will power the aircraft for about 10 minutes. However, while the aircraft is in flight, the emergency power system is using bleed air along with hydrazine (and nitrogen) in order to provide power to the aircraft. This greatly extends the amount of emergency power time the aircraft has. However, if hydraulic pressure drops down too far, the EPU will increase the amount of H-70 it uses in order to generate hydraulic pressure and electricity to maintain flight. If the EPU was running on H-70 alone, it would be about 10 minutes otherwise, while in air, there is much, much longer time. There are numerous reasons the aircraft may have to fall back onto emergency power, not just running out of fuel. So the system is designed to allow power in other ways while still in the air without having to worry solely on a 10 minute fuel tank. With that said, Drewski here probably caused a thermal decoupling between the main power generator and the engine by running it out of fuel. The fuel provides cooling to the transfer case and once it gets too low and no longer provides enough cooling, it heats up pretty quickly. In order to save the expensive parts from catastrophic failure, there is a coupler that will separate the drive shaft connecting the two systems by melting above a certain temperature. Great job by the engineers for creating that setup. But the maintenance guys are gonna be pissed!!

The tail hook on air force fighters isnt actually intended for landing on carriers. Its an entirely different design mostly used for emergency landings on runways and engine runs so the plane doesnt drive right into a building
so.. how will pulling negative G's go? accidentally bump the HOTAS the wrong way and suddenly your chair tries to murder you. thats gonna be interesting..
I remember trying out F-16 for first time...you startup, taxi. Jet looks cool, then you put youre throttle to max, afterburner starts and then...you see it, The Fuel Flow...
@@RW-zn8vy I know that Viper is very manageable in terms of fuel, but still it's one of the most thirsty jet's in game, especially in hand's of new players. Just like Mig-29. Nothing sums up the GS sever better than going on a complete rampage against bandits who have little to no situational awareness, only to get team killed by a friendly F-16 who doesn’t know how IFF works.
I cannot even fathom how hard it must be to make that bubble canopy with the clear, uniform thickness, curvature and the immense stress it has to withstand.

The tail hook on air force fighters isnt actually intended for landing on carriers. Its an entirely different design mostly used for emergency landings on runways and engine runs so the plane doesnt drive right into a building
I'm waiting for the day some mad man makes a g-force "simulator" chair for DCS.
so.. how will pulling negative G's go? accidentally bump the HOTAS the wrong way and suddenly your chair tries to murder you. thats gonna be interesting..
@@pixel6173 exactly.
@@pixel6173 🤣
I remember trying out F-16 for first time...you startup, taxi. Jet looks cool, then you put youre throttle to max, afterburner starts and then...you see it, The Fuel Flow...
i've never had that issue, you prob should not fly in full burner it'll drain any fighter and most certainly the viper 😂
@@RW-zn8vy I know that Viper is very manageable in terms of fuel, but still it's one of the most thirsty jet's in game, especially in hand's of new players. Just like Mig-29. F/A-18C have a very good feature that can show you optimal altitude and speed to get to your waypoint. (Very good for new players)
Hope our own Light Fighter turns out to be as good if not as better as the F-16 in the long run. Coincidentally, even it is called something similar, the LCA (Light Combat Aircraft) rn. I know I am being too ambitious since its like the 2nd fighter our nation has indigenous developed (first one was the HAL Marut actually Kurt Tank, yep the German Aviation engineer guy from Nazi Germany had helped with it so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)
This is a nice video. My uncle was a f16 pilot back in the Cold War.
Hey Drew I've noticed your game looks quite grey, have you ever considered installing shaders? (they really make the colours more vibrant and realistic)
It is a post-processing filter
"very low military budget"
Shows sneaky background image
I always respect a man that can perfectly comunicate something without saying it!
Early gang OT
Great video. Don't forget to turn on link16 on the radar screen. This will give you radar sigs that your fellow pilots (that have link16 on) are picking up and you will give them your info as well.
Great stuff bro
2:27 Drewski still angy 'bout the blue on blue during his flanker vid~ both 100% justified and relatable but also adorable
that intro was too good to be true holy shit i might have just shat my god damn pants, good job drewski.
Bro your dcs content is my favorite by far
Hahah getting my first Hotas for my birthday in a few days and the f-16 is the first thing I’m flying. Great timing!
0:17 I can hear happy polish noises😄. Well, I'm happy, too!
I love that the bingo fuel warning sounded AFTER the engine flamed out on short final.
Actually, the F-16s are called Vipers since they resemble the Viper star fighters from the TV show Battlestar Galactica, which was popular when the F-16 was being developed and fielded by the US Air Force. It's official name still remains the Fighting Falcon.
I work avionics for the F-16 in the Air Force so this is so interesting to watch. Love your stuff dude, keep it up.
What do you think about the in-game avionics?
Are they close enough with the real thing?
The F-16 original game was my favorite game. I played a lot of flight simulators when I was growing up because I wanted to become a pilot but with the way I flew the airplanes in the simulator, I don't think that anybody wants to fly with me lol. I ended doing It work instead.
We need more DCS. I love watching this game.
The F-16 is all electric, no backup flight controls. No power means no control. Needless to say that landing was CLUTCH.
