I have seen dozens of headlines like this over the years talking about the next "revolutionary" battery tech. Yet i never hear any followups.
Instead of continuing to push new sensationalized videos, why not do followups or surveys of all those technologies to see where they are and what happened to them.

Yeah same. Countless of amazing breakthroughs in all kinds of adventurous ways. Super high energy density batteries. Super fast charging ones. Super durable ones. Super environmentally friendly, Super Capacitors, Capacitor-Battery Hybrids,...
For years now. And indeed in dozens and dozens of variants.
And barely any of them I ever heard anything again after that initial news.
At this point what we really need (aside from at least one of those technologies actually finally taking off for once) is a summary series, deep-diving into each of these, comparing their feasibility, and finding existing followups on what steps those various concepts are stuck at or why they got dismissed or why the heck we never ever hear of them again.

You're right that these types of discoveries should be taken with a grain of salt. Long story short there's a large disconnect between the scientific method and the media, and the media will highlight exciting claims, without asking the important questions such as where it's been published.
If you want a more detailed explanation you could watch this:
      ua-cam.com/video/LIlBsfTx3Kc/v-deo.html
The guy in the vid is a geologist who now works as a journalist.

    • @zamundaaa776
      @zamundaaa776 5 років тому +19

@@Kram1032 some of those technologies are already in newer phones. It's just that for example with graphene it's too costly right now to put so much of it into the batteries that you could just plug it in and have it charged in 5 minutes. Instead the charging time is reduced by 5 minutes or something and the battery stays cooler, increasing efficiency and lifespan.
And battery technology in general is improving really fast lately, even without those new battery types. The latest Oppo Vooc charge can fill your phone with 50W from 0 to 100% in something like half an hour. Qualcomm quick charge 5. Tesla superchargers. The list of super fast charging tech goes on. And all the while energy density increases.
Those super leaps in the form of new battery types take time to develop (that's where the news is) and then a lot of time to make profitable and consumer ready (that's what you almost never hear about because it's industry secrets in big parts). And then some time for it to make it into the final products.
I'm really impatient for a lot of this stuff myself but the process of getting a new technology out just isn't as fast as one would wish
FYI: there's already solid state batteries one can buy right now. For example flexible ones that you can't get to burn. Great Scott made a video about them, look it up

Edit: So before people get confused: I am not doubting that fluoride batteries will work, but rather doubting that it will be able to keep my phone charged (while using it) for 8 times longer. 8 times the energy density of lithium from any chemical device is an absolutely absurd claim. if it were claiming to be only 10% better I would find that much more believable.

To be fair, there have been advancements using some of the things they've been hyping. Graphene, for example, has already been added into some batteries to improve their life and performance. Unfortunately, graphene is still too expensive to make an entire battery out of, so we wait. A consumer grade, relatively affordable, graphene battery is more worthy of a followup than an upgrade to existing tech using the material. Beyond that, certain improvements are simply going to be industry secrets until we reach the next big leap to a new type of battery (in this example, a graphene battery). That's life, unfortunately.

You guys can't be serious with this content....... Instead of bringing yet another battery tech that will undoubtedly change the world......any day now, how about a feature that explains why bringing most new battery tech is incredibly difficult.
Looking at it from a manufacturers point of view. There are dozens of alternative approaches to "new and improved" batteries and energy storage devices....... and just as many problems.
No company wants to invest in what might turn out to be the "Beta Tape" of batteries. No single company wants to take the risk of being 1st with anything that requires a large investment to their existing manufacturing process. This is why, in spite of the different approaches that have been around for decades, small advances to existing tech will always be far more appealing to the manufacturer. No company wants to sow the seeds of it's own destruction by creating batteries (D, AA, AAA), that only need replacement every few years instead of replacing them every few months. Batteries for things like cells and laptops would past the cost on to the consumer but would still be an added expense to the overall price. Another words shooting yourself in the foot by creating a technology that renders any investment worthless is never a good business model. Ironically the large number of alternatives being researched is one of the biggest problems. Outside of custom batteries for things like cells there will need to a consensus of the standards by the manufactures. VHS vs. BETA all over again.

Forgive me for not being that excited. Only in the last two years I've read about 10 or so "breakthroughs" in batteries and nothing was heard about them since then. There is a very big difference between succeeding in lab tests and creating a viable product. A battery needs to be viable economically to manufacture and it must be safe to transport and use. Plus it also needs to be efficient when charging/discharging. Even if fluoride or graphite or any other of these "breakthroughs" prove to be an economical success we are still looking at 10-20 years before we can buy any. That is a long time to be excited about...

    • @Guywhomakesthings
      @Guywhomakesthings 5 років тому +2

They say it's a breakthrough in the study they are researching. Which means that they've made a "breakthrough" in the study and not in the field of commercially available batteries. That's why these "breakthroughs" are important, not in the economic or commercial field, but in the field of the research of the particular battery which helps further development and finally the kind of batteries, as you stated in your comment, which are economically and commercially viable.

@@Guywhomakesthings don't get me wrong. I'm very happy to see how much interest this domain is receiving in the last years. The more the merrier since it's bound for something good to come out from this race of obtaining a better battery. My problem was the way they present this. Like OMG next Christmas you will be getting a fluoride battery as present. A breakthrough in science that can't be used in bettering our day to day lives is not really something to be excited about and chances are that this breakthrough will fail to go further like many other.

This won't replace lithium ion, even if they get it to work swimmingly well. The reason? Lanthanum is $64 a gram. Cobalt is $0.05 a gram. If their electrolyte requires lanthanum, the only people who would be motivated to buy such eye-wateringly expensive batteries would be people launching stuff to space.... Like the NASA scientists working on these!

But other than your silly initial statement you are right the energy per size has not increased on the same pace as computing power. there does need to be a leap in battery technology if we are to truly miniaturize electronics further, not give the illusion of thinness.

Replies that expect this to be only incrementally better than Li-ion are incredibly annoying. Fundamentally altered battery chemistry really does work that way. There's first a big jump, then an iterative improvement closer to theoretical values. This kind of statement is like comparing Li-ion (old-state of the art of ~150-250 W·h/g with Pb-acid ~20-50 W·h/g) and saying we would only expect a 10% improvement. It's a >5x improvement in real systems at all points. A small improvement isn't expected, or nobody would bother trying to beat a commoditized solution like Li-ion. Also, we already have ballpark double the energy density of Li-ion in lithium-sulfur batteries, they're just too expensive (~100% of the market is aerospace because they're willing to pay 10x for the same capacity if it's half the mass), and this and silicon anode tech are really the technologies that fluoride batteries are trying to be a step-change above.

Best idea so far would be Sodium ion based batteries. First, Sodium is abundant thus cheaper. Second, extracting it from say Sea Water, is less energy intensive. Third, recycling it is much more straightforward. And fourth but most important, byproducts of both exploitation of raw materials and disposalof used batteries creates, on the first purified drinking water, and on the second non toxic materials.

For all the people who thought.. That's sounds to good to be true...
You are right.. This ist bullshit nothing more.
Here are three quotes from the paper
"Fluoride ion batteries: Theoretical performance, safety, toxicity, and a combinatorial screening of new electrodes"
    1)
It can be said that, all tested combinations remain far away from the predicted values. The OCV were generally too low, along with a deep voltage in the discharge plateau affording those poor discharge capacities.
Furthermore no combination showed any cycling capacity. This is due to the formation of a passivation layer (MFx) on the anode side, which prevents cycling (supporting material). Therefore only the first discharge was investigated for the first tests.
2)None of the tested combination came any close to the theoretical values. Especially the low discharge plateaus would be a serious problem for a potential application.
    3)
in future the most important focus has to be laid on reaching higher OCV and discharge plateau as on finding an anode-cathode system, which allows cycling. Only than the theoretically interesting RT-FIB systems, could truly be discussed as an alternative to current commercial battery

    2 issues.
    1. Much higher energy density = greater potential for danger (fire).
    2. What is the durability? If these batteries don't decay quickly (two years maximum lifespan) no companies will put them in devices. As it stands, with normal use, most batteries will not allow more than 1000 charges, most fast charging batteries take that down to between 200 and 400 charges. This is a huge selling point for manufacturers like Apple who want you to purchase new products yearly.

Will they ever see wide spread use or they only fit some obscure applications? Talk directly to those developing the tech. Let's hear what they have to say.

Long time to wait is because of prototyping, testing, refining, more testing and building facilities to manufacture said products and then the product is further refined over the years until it's replaced by better tech.

Hmmmm let's see, lithium ion batteries are prone to exploding/catching on fire when the output and charging is not well regulated (see fire hoverboards). So at 8x energy that fire would have 8x the power to be fueled. If you stab a AA battery(alkaline) it gets hot and maybe catches on fire if you're lucky, if you stab a lithium battery you will get more heat and more likely a fire(energy density). So what would happen with fluoride?
