Well it impressed me enough to buy a 2022 Option 719. The bike has everything! It's almost overwhelming. I'm looking forward to many miles on it. Thanks for watching.
The old ones are fantastic. I first test-rode a 1998 R1100RT, loved the power and wind protection, started looking for one. And now I just picked up a 2007 R1200RT-P, state police edition. The handling and power are amazing. Very plush ride too.
Careful with those test rides! I took one last weekend, then the next day I came back and bought it. Rode home on a state police edition R1200RT-P with the police electronics removed. Still has the slim side cases and the police crash bars and the radio box. Very sharp looking. Can't wait to go someplace on it.
BMW knows what they're doing with the test rides. After I did the 2016 test ride, a friend told me he was trading his 2022 on a GS1300, and he'd sell me the RT for whatever they allowed him on a trade. It's sitting in my garage. The last thing I needed was another bike, but after the test ride, I had to have it. Best of luck with yours, and thanks for watching.
I do worry about my hands. It just so happened that I left my gloves on the counter when I left the house that day. By the time I realized it, I was 45 minutes from home. Riding the RT was the mission and I had told them that I'd be there by a certain time. Also, I wouldn't be honest if I didn't admit to being a squid every now and again. Thanks for your concern.
Hi Michael! Good to hear from you. I love making videos when I have something of interest to share. Life has a habit of getting in the way. I've got 2 new tour series coming. Stay tuned. I appreciate your continued support. Be well.
Hey Rich, I remember you telling how much you liked test driving the BMW 1200, but somehow, I missed this video review. After listening to you rave about the bike on this video, I am so happy you decided to buy the 1250. Enjoy my friend.
Great review! The new 1250 motors with the Shift Cam have even more torque and power. I am thinking of getting one myself. Also the new ones have a HUGE display.
The saleman talked to me about the Shift Cam and the differences in performance. He also mentioned 50mpg and 300 mile range. I love the new display as well. Just a really well designed motorcycle with the long distance rider in mind. There's a reason for the hype. It's well deserved. Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment. Much appreciated.
For all the things you mentioned, it is the chosen bike for the Police Depts. throughout the country and around the world. It is my 7th BMW in a row including K1600, GS and GSA. The new RT has many improvements over the 7 years old you tested. I'd get the 23 with the low interest and the customer cash (from the manufacturer) plus another $1,500 off dealer discount. Then you'll have a heck of a bike and a great deal.
I can understand why it's the choice of many Police departments. Having owned so many Bimmers, can I ask about your experience with a limited dealer network and how it affects availability of parts while traveling? The salesman told me that if I'm traveling, especially out west, its best to pack oil filters and the proper oil. Also, he said that the cost of the run-in service is $600. That seems very high and I'm curious if that's typical. Thanks for watching and for offering your extensive BMW knowledge and experience.
@@HaveMotoWillTravel I live around DC Metro and there is a Dealer 20 miles from me. The most I ever paid for a service is $400. 10 years ago it was $300 so it is not really too bad. I have friends with Harleys and Ducatis and they pay anywhere between $400 to $500. Service is due either yearly or every 6K miles. The boxer engine and the transmission are rock solid, so I never had any problems. I am easy on my bikes and cars and I treat then like a puppy. I don't red line them because the bike has so much low end torque. So, if you are doing trips and need a Dealer every 6K miles trust me you will find many Dealers in that radius. That is like doing West to East full round trip. The RT has been super reliable with zero issues. If I ever trade it, it will have to be for something so special. Good luck friend.
Thanks for the reply. That eases my mind. I think I'll try to locate a gpx file with all the dealer locations. I'm sure someone has put it together. Maybe it's on the BMW site or already in my Garmin. Thanks again.
If you loved the RT, You will be obsessed with the K1600GT! I promise! Ive owned several RT's which I absolute LOVE! But once I test drove a K1600 it was a totally new ball game for me and so I got one. Oh man! The power is unreal! And like I said already, you can get a tune through Brets Tunes and the bike will easily hit 175 mph! an absolutely incredible bike! You gotta test one. Thank me later.
No speed limitation on the RT/K16GT/GS/GS Adventure. I have owned two k16’s. They were at 252km/h with tour pack on German Autobahn. I currently have my 2nd 1200RT now at 112000km as a daily ride workhorse and sometimes touring, all season, all weather and my second 1250 GS Adventure as s touring bike. The RT is the best compromise between agility/comfort/power/day rider/touring bike. Fuel economy is phenomenal and the tank range lets you enjoy the ride without thinking fuel stops all day. Suspension, brakes, on road feel just difficult to beat.
Thanks for the information. The RT is the most impressive bike I've ridden to date. When the weather improves a bit, I'd like to ride a GS as well, mostly to satisfy my curiosity. Thanks for watching and for leaving an informative comment. I appreciate it.
It's on my short list for sure. Shocking how good it is. The only reservation I have is the dealer network and the cost of parts and service. If you have a chance to ride one, do it. It handles like a sport bike and is as comfortable as a touring bike. Amazing. Thanks for watching and commenting, Les. Good to hear from you again.
Another nice video! We've thought about bmw before we bought our first Harley, but the there's no dealers near us anymore. They've all gone under, unfortunately.
The dealer network gives me pause. Especially to the places I travel. They require special skills and sometimes even special tools. As good as that bike was, I'm hesitant. I'll keep looking. Half the fun is the shopping.
I considered this bike several years ago. I purchased the Kawasaki 1400 instead. It cost much less and I concluded the maintenance would be less also. It is an amazing highway bike. It would be an interesting comparison. Expect less tech with the K1400. No cruise control or heated grips. I find that a palm assist and throttle lock are all I need. I enjoy your content. Be safe.
The Concours 1400 is a great bike. Now that you mention it, I should go sit on one. The BMW was awesome, but the limited dealer network scares me a bit because of the places I travel , and so does the cost of maintenance. They told me the 1st service is $600. WOW! Thank you for watching and for your kind comment about my content. Be well, stay safe.
This was my first experience with the RT. As you could see, I was very impressed. In fact, I was so taken with the bike, I bought a 2022 with 7k miles on it. Stay tuned for upcoming videos. Thanks for visiting the channel and watching the video. Much appreciated.
I ride a 2017 R1200RT-P (retired police model) with only 23K on the odometer. My .02 are that it's a great balanced ride with lots of low end torque. I can do 100+ mile legs no problem. One drawback to the police model is the lower gearing in 6th versus the civilian model; which at highway speeds means you're cruising at a higher RPM. If you're a DIY mechanic, the wethead models (wet clutch) are amazingly simple to do a clutch replacement, oil change, etc. The hardest part of that job were the two top bolts on the breastplate.
It was very comfortable. I could tell that it's an all day motorcycle. I'm sure that's part of the reason that police departments buy them. BMW has had some final drive problems of late. I have a friend who got a call from the dealership telling him they were going to replace his final drive. Orders from Germany. It seems to be centered on the GS models. Nothing on the RT that I've heard. I'll check out the 2024's when they come in. Still undecided on what I'll do. Thanks for watching and for your insight.
I'm with the OP .. just picked up a 2007 R1200RT-P former state police bike. High miles but seems to run nicely, and it came with most of the BMW service log. Thanks for mentioning the 6th gear. I was wondering why the ratio from 5th to 6th was so short. Just waiting for a few bits (windscreen, risers, etc) so I can take it out for a proper highway trip.
You have to test ride a K1600GT. They are speed limited but will easily do 136mph! You can get it tuned by Brets Tunes which will remove all limits. It is around $850.
I’m surprised at your review. I didn’t expect you to like it that much. I’d be concerned about dealer network and maintenance costs as well. Wonder how it compares to a new GoldWing? Now we have to wait until February for a decision??? Great review and always enjoy the ride along with your videos.
I didn't expect to like it that much either. But, the hype is true. One of the best bikes I've ever ridden. Plus, it has character. That's the one thing that's lacking in the Goldwing. The Wing is really, really good, but, it lacks character. My Voyager has tons of character, so does your Wing. Of course, I can live with mere excellence.🙂 Thanks for coming Ali g for the ride.
Wow, it seems you were very impressed with the BMW. The big concern would be dealer network and reliability, the nearest BMW dealer here is 8 hours away.
Very impressive bike but dealer network is indeed a major concern, as is, the cost of parts and service. All that aside, it's one of the best motorcycles I've ever ridden. Lots of character. The search continues. I think I'll refocus on the adventure bike category. I have 2 fine touring bikes and my original thought was having a bike that could better handle the challenges of BC and Alaskan roads. Tommy G told me the roads were very rough up that way and they beat the hell out of his Harley. I still plan on doing that trip, even if it's on my own.
Ive got a 250 vstrom and its smoother at 120 km per hour than the boxer 1200rt My hands were buzzing after 20 minutes on the 2009 rt they do look nice i will test ride another a 2006 model in mint condition soon and compare
I love that little V-Strom. I didn't think were available here yet. The R1250RT isn't as smooth as my Goldwing, and after a 4.5 hr ride yesterday, my throttle hand was a bit numb. I just put on the cruise control for 5 minutes and I was as good as new. It really is quite a machine. Test ride a new one just for fun. The dealers are pretty good about demo rides. Thanks for watching and for leaving a comment.
Excellent video! I test rode a BMW RS 1250 and was on it for about a block and less than 5 minutes and had the same reaction you had on the RT. I purchased the bike because i knew that was it. BMW makes great bikes and the negative reactions to their bikes from people are interesting, to say the least. The RT has always been a bike that is well liked and surprisingly nimble and light weight. I like to know what you decided to do. Do you plan to get rid of your Goldwing. BTW, what state are you in? What's the temperature that you can ride without gloves even with heated bars.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I'm undecided on what I'll do re: the new bike. The 2024 RT's won't be in until Feb 2024 the earliest. I live in NH and I just forgot my gloves that day. I don't typically ride without gloves. The heated grips were the hottest I've ever encountered. I had to turn them down to the lowest setting. I won't make a final decision until spring. I've still got a few bikes to try out but most of the dealers have put the demo bikes away for the winter. They're concentrating on snow mobiles, snow blowers and generators this time of year. Also, I haven't ruled out an adventure bike. I'm planning on going to Alaska and it might be nice to have a bike with more suspension travel. At this point, I plan on keeping my Goldwing. However, we plan on relocating to TN next year and adding a 7th bike to the stable will require more garage space and a very understanding wife. Time will tell. Thanks for checking out the video and for leaving a great comment. Be well, stay safe.
@@HaveMotoWillTravel Thanks for responding! 7 bikes what are the other bikes? An Adventure bike seems nice and would you go for the new GS 1300 or something else? BTW what year is the Goldwing?
@p-dub7422 I currently have 6 bikes. The new purchase would make 7. I have; 2007 Honda GL 1800 Goldwing 2002 Kawasaki Voyager xii 2000 Suzuki Intruder VL1500 LC 2000 Suzuki Bandit 1200S 1989 Suzuki Katana 1100 1986 Honda VF700 Magna I'm not sure what I'd get for an adventure bike. I'm going g to be 70 in February, and while I have no problems with the weight of a big bike right now, I know that wo t last forever. Since I have no off-road experience, I thought I might go to the BMW Academy in SC, get a little instruction and see how I do with the weight and height of the GS.
@@HaveMotoWillTravel That's impressive! The Katana was a popular bike and everyone liked and the Magna was one of my favorites. You are bringing op great memories. And riding at 70 is inspiring to me! I hope to see what you do next and if it is a RT. Thanks

I take it an air cooled model is a special thing? I'm old enough to remember when they were all air cooled. 😉 Thanks for watching and commenting. Be well.
@@HaveMotoWillTravel what it was is the last of the generation before they went to wet heads (05-13). They’re the last models that are easy to work on and had the typical dry clutch. They are not that special to be fair but I purchased one because aside from the clutch I can do everything else on the bike with just a few tools, and I’m not that handy.
Had a 2017 Gold Wing it was a great bike for 85,000 miles, traded it on a 2022 Gold Wing manual and it was nice. The upgrades Honda did are great, but after 14,000 miles the water pump started leaking. Had it repaired under warranty and traded it a week later on a 23 RT. Very happy with that decision, excellent bike.
I appreciate you adding to this conversation. Your comment is very relevant. I own a 2007 Goldwing and I'm very happy with its performance and reliability. I've ridden an older RT and I plan on riding the 2023 manual Goldwing. What has your rider experience been with each bike and how would you compare and rate each of them. You have 85k miles of experience on the '17 Wing but you got rid of the 2022 Wing after only 14k miles. Not a glowing recommendation. How many miles on the RT at this point and how has the dealer/service experience been? Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment. I value your real world experience with each of these bikes.
Don't worry about the clutch. This model probably has a shift assist. As for the 2024 model. This will probably be a last of this series. The GS already has the 1300 engine which is more compact and the gearbox partly is under the boxer. The new model will probably be a total redesign, just like the GS.
It didn't occur to me to try the shift assist. The 2024 model is due in February. I think you may be right about 2024 being the last year of this model. It would make sense. I've got some time to make a decision and I have a few more bikes I'd like to sample. I also have a friend who has a '20 K1600 Grand America that he wants to sell. Only 2700 miles on it. I may need to take it for a ride and add it to the equation. We shall see. Thanks for watching and for adding to the discussion.
Thanks for that bit of information, David. The salesman told me about the restriction on the Grand America. He didn't mention the waiver on the K1600 GTL. I'll have to clarify that info. I haven't ruled out the K1600 so I'd like to get the complete lowdown on it. I appreciate you having a look at the video and taking the time to comment.
LMAO! Good guess.😄 It's quite the motorcycle. Very comfortable. I'll go have a look at the 2024's when they're in. It's the only bike I've ridden that would get me to give up my Goldwing. We'll see. Thanks for watching.
Hey Wayne. I'd love to take that BMW on some real twisties and wring it out a bit. Very competent motorcycle. No dealer network and the service costs will choke you. We'll see, I'm in no rush. It might actually be smart to wait until I relocate to Tennessee. It's not like I don't have something g to ride. 🙂😉 Thanks for checking out the video, my friend.
😂😂 Funny you say that. I made the same comment to my wife. It's like they put the whole bike together, realized they had an antenna left over, and said, "Where the heck are we gonna put this?" Ah just slap it on the front somewhere. Thanks for watching and for giving me a chuckle.
None in stock to demo. Dealer says I can leave $1000 to get the next one allocated (Mar 2024 arrival) and if I ride it and don’t like it, they keep my $1000. I think this motor would be perfect for me, moving down from a HD Ultra Classic, but that kind of business practice is way too shady, so BMW 👎.
Wow! That is shady. Yamaha did that when the first FJ1300 came out. They wanted a $500 nonrefundable deposit just to have a look at one. I felt the same way. Stick it! If you can find one close to you on riders-share to rent for a day, it might be worth it. Or, maybe find another dealer with a used 2020-2023. BMW dealers, I have found, are pretty good about letting people demo their bikes. It really is quite a motorcycle and I demoed a 7 year old variant. Very impressive. Thanks for watching the video and leaving a comment. Good luck in your search. Merry Christmas.
At 12:05 mins, did anyone else see Will punch the throttle to 100 mph in 4th gear at 7,000 rpm plus besides me? Will, your 240 lb frame and a 635 lb bike just stressed that motor a bit much and I hope you haven't loosened a cam or a bearing. I have the same ride from Max's in Troy, NY: Please be honest and make sure you go inside and tell Ben and Max, bc I know them both, or even Craig Canty, tell him that you stressed the loaner boxer. Be safe out there man, and keep the rubber side down.
I get your point, Jim. Honestly, I never gave it any thought. The bike seemed capable of easily handling what I put it through and more. I don't think the engine was stressed in the least. But, since you know Ben, Max, and Craig, feel free to show them the video and tell them that if they have a problem, they can contact me directly. I will say this: Since you own and have experience with the same ride and have a concern that 7000rpm and 100 mph might stress the motor a bit much, I probably don't want to own one. I've heard that BMW's have some problems, but I didn't think they needed to be babied. In fact, I suspect the R1200RT is more capable than you give it credit for. It never missed a beat, and no damage was done. In fact, it handled all of it with ease. Now, I've never owned a BMW motorcycle but I can tell you that I have done and wouldn't hesitate to still do the same on my '89 Katana 1100, '07 Goldwing 1800, '00 Bandit 1200, '02 Voyager 1200 or even my '86 V45 Magna. Each of them is still up to it if I choose to get into the throttle like that and none of them are any worse for wear. I've been riding for over 50 years, I'm an engineer, I know what mechanical abuse looks like. This wasn't it. Thanks for watching the video. Be well.

Thank for the info and suggestion, William. Test riding the K1600 is on my list.

Ive got a 250 vstrom and its smoother at 120 km per hour than the boxer 1200rt
My hands were buzzing after 20 minutes on the 2009 rt they do look nice i will test ride another a 2006 model in mint condition soon and compare
I have;
2007 Honda GL 1800 Goldwing
2002 Kawasaki Voyager xii
2000 Suzuki Intruder VL1500 LC
2000 Suzuki Bandit 1200S
1989 Suzuki Katana 1100
1986 Honda VF700 Magna
I'm not sure what I'd get for an adventure bike.
Thanks
Thanks for your interest. Considering that I was crippled until 2017, I'm blessed to be able to ride at all. You might like my Crippled 2 Cross Country series. It tells the story of my medical miracle and my 2018 10,000 mile cross country return to riding. An epic journey in more ways than one.

Oh that nice air cooled model by the door at the 25mjn mark
I take it an air cooled model is a special thing? I'm old enough to remember when they were all air cooled. 😉
Thanks for watching and commenting.
The k1600 is limited because with bag over 150mph bike becomes unstable.you sign a waver and open it up leave the bags off the bike will run 200mph +
So……… Let me guess. You liked it? 😆 Great bike with all the bells and whistles, comfort and convenience you’d want / need. 👍
LMAO! Good guess.😄 It's quite the motorcycle. Very comfortable. I'll go have a look at the 2024's when they're in. It's the only bike I've ridden that would get me to give up my Goldwing. We'll see.
Thanks for watching.
you see scads of those bike in Eureka Springs, they like the twisties..........JB..
Thanks for checking out the video, my friend.
The antenna bugs me.. 😂
Be well.
If its the 1200lc its 125bhp the 1250 is 136bhp
Yore correct, Austin. They told me that as good as the 1200 was, the 1250 was better in every way. I can only imagine.
Thanks for watching and for taking the time to leave a comment. Much appreciated.

@@HaveMotoWillTravel i love the 1250 boxer but i had 2 2005 1200rt oi cooled ones and i also liked them never tied the 1200lc but i am sure its nice also bit i like the style of the gsa
@austinmatthews347 I liked the 7yr old 1200 that I test rode in this video. Another! I even thought about buying it. But, I have too many used bikes already. My friend has a '20 K1600 Grand America with 2700 miles that he'd like to sell. I may have to take it for a ride.
I really would like to try one for a few days on a long trip....What would one do in Alaska if you needed parts or service ?? I think you liked that bike Rich....
I really liked it Tommy. The dealer network gives me pause but people ride the GS all over the world and seem to do fine. No decisions yet. It's been fun shopping.
Thanks for dropping in. BTW, nice sweater.😂😂
Thanks man!! @@HaveMotoWillTravel
Nice! Does it have an autopilot? | Ah! Cruise Control. 17:30
It rode like it had auto pilot. That motorcycle is no joke. For years, I've heard about how good it was but I was skeptical. How good could it be, right? It was that good and they say the 1250 is even better.
