- A nice bit of useful kit … the MAT-40 remote tuner gives you the opportunity to match a non-resonant vertical at the feedpoint, the best way for efficiency and it matches a nice range of impedances too!

Great video Tim, as we have talked about in the past I really want to start using a tuner at the base. Thanks for doing the hard part and sharing my friend!
No problem !
Great points 👍👍
Great vid Tim. Very good tuner the MAT-40.
Thanks guys! I’m very happy with it
Excellent video, had the same thought and was going to try the MAT-40 out with 7.6m length of wire as a portable setup.
Yep sounds a good idea!
Thanks for the video Tim.. I've been considering this unit and appreciate your video insight using it.. thx, k0klb
Glad it was helpful! 73
I've used a similar set up with an old CG-2000 tuner a few times and do sometimes look at the MAT-40 as a modern product to do the same on a budget.
I agree it’s a cheaper version.
Thanks, Tim. I have a 7300 and was aware of the ICOM AH-4, but not the MAT-40.
It’s a good option.
Wow! V interesting.
Thanks!
great concept tim, i used my atu-100 by n7dcc which is rf sensing to auto tune, in a similar setup
Very very good plan Joe
I use the MAT100 on my Yaesu setup and it is brilliant .
Good stuff John!
Great video Tim, and a interesting set up .look forward to seeing in use.
Horses for courses of course, but too many bit and pieces for me, another reason I stick to resonant ants, and with only 2 bands ever open down here 40 @ 20m it's easier for me.
Cheers mate, 73.
No worries Brian I know your set up works so well 👍👍
I copied your radial plate, works a treat👍
Great stuff Dave!
Control Cable = another path for lightning. Not a deal breaker, just beware and take precautions.
Tim, my HF antenna is 33ft vertical and remote tuner, all bands, and easy work DX.
Less loses with tuner at base of antenna 📶
Totally agree and nice set up
Thank you for this Tim. Wondering how this tuner would hold up on a sailboat connected to the backstay of the mast, if its possible to seal it up to fully waterproof. Very well priced to play with.
Good thinking. It is designed as an outdoor tuner and folks use them as a permanent ATU.
My main Yaesu is a Yaesu FT1000MP, which has a larger tuner fitting than the fitting on the MAT-40 Yaesu adaptor. Have you any advice on fitting the mat-40 to the FT1000MP? I am stumped at the moment. M0JWA John
Isn’t there a connector used for a bespoke yaesu tuner? Should be the same one and just get the yaesu adaptor to fit to the mat40 control cable
Hi Tim, is it better to use an ATU at the antenna base vs ATU in the radio? My Xiegu radio ATU tunes a wet dog but wonder which radiates more power?
As close to or at the feedpoint is best
Love to meet with you one day when you're out static mobile with your 891. I'm thinking of buying one of these and you could teach me how to use it, explain the menu system etc. The proposed new licensing conditions allow me to use the 891 on full power as I, at time of writing have still not passed my full exam. I can only operate mobile and you're a smart guy, I need your antenna knowledge!

It’s a great radio!
The 891 is one of the most under rated radios in amateur radio, with headphones it's got amazing audio. I use the "countour" function for better clarity. Great low noise receiver.
Most of the menus are set and forget, give it time and get used to it and you'll be glad you did as it's an excellent radio.
In your setup, how much is the efficiency of your antenna ?
You seem not understand That you protect only your tranceiver.
Read some Good radio and antenna handbook !
Ok let’s see how my set up helped efficiency: 1) the ATU was at the feedpoint so this negates feedline loss; 2) from 10-17m this antenna ranges from 0.4-0.75 lambda so the current maximum is above the base, meaning that the presence of the atu at the base is the a huge factor. Hope this assists your understanding. 73
It sucks the remote box has to be outside i run inside through my window wing nut antenna coax inside to the out side terminal the purpose is not to leave the remote box out side
Don’t forget this tuner is designed as an outdoor feedpoint tuner
