I love watching the orchestra in these concerts - a range of different intensities of concentration, some listening when not playing, some chewing gum (!). He sang so often with this orchestra and conductor - I wonder if anyone spares a thought for how much Constantine Orbelian must surely have been bereaved by his loss, if we who never knew Dmitri Hvorostovsky are so cut up at his death?
I totally agree. I think DH’s best singing was with Orbelian. I also would offer special recognition to equally talented musicians who played flute, cello and harp in this performance. The singer does not always need all the credit as they are fully enhanced by the solo instruments. Orbelian was visible at the wake/funeral of Hvorostovsky as was Kutoy, pianist in another post.
Hvorostovsky has achieved so much as verdi bariton, absolutely sublime. Radvanovsky is a wonderful verdi soprano. I really look forward to their Ballo and Trovatore together in the future.

Yo no tengo esa suerte, mi carnicero solo silba algún tango. Mis barítonos preferidos siempre fueron Warren, Bastianini y Zancanaro. Ahora se les agrega al mismo nivel el gran Dmitri Hvorostovsky, no me canso de escucharlo, haberlo descubierto enriqueció mi vida.

Once again, he BECOMES Renato. I can feel, hear, and see every ounce of that despair because of Dmitri's superb interpretation. Tears well up, and I hardly breathe. If I don't stop listening, I will surely be on "oxygen," but I can't stop. Hopelessly addicted to his beautiful singing.

So many are so quick to judge this poor man. He was already suffering from brain cancer that he wasn't even aware of. I'm not a physician but I understand the medical field very well. And the early stages of brain cancer are memory balance etc. Need I say more. I was administrative Hospital manager etc. And 90% of the time individuals that have brain cancer start having signs of decline memory performance issues. Especially for someone that has a demanding job. As I'm sure many of you realize Dmitri life was very hectic. What a great loss to the Opera world. Wow! Such criticism of Hvorostovsky! I hear nothing out of tune and nothing wrong about the drama inherent in the opera. But critics always carry some sort of baggage with them from previous experiences with particular singers, and importantly the opinions of others (ever heard of the bandwagon?). The one thing I will admit is that the volume (his pushing, or trying too hard, etc.) is a bit much. But every recorded performance depends on the engineers, where they place their microphones, and also the size and acoustics of the venue itself. The recording of a singer can often cause disaster or the making of a new star. The only thing that can be reliably depended upon is the opinion of a knowledgeable person who actually attended the live performance.

Generally, I like his voice but on this he didn't quite pull it off. It sounds like he was trying too hard for dramatic effect. Unfortunately, in the process he forgot how to sing... and after all, in the end it's really all about the voice....
