  • Robert Farnon 1917 - 2005. A prolific and brilliant composer, arranger and conductor. Mainly noted for his large contribution to the light classical music genre. He also wrote many scores for film, radio and television productions. Along with a few other unsung yet talented musical hacks Robert Farnon virtually wrote the background musical soundtrack to those of us who grew-up in the fifties and sixties.
Appropriately the simple but delightful fountain situated in the Walled Garden of the landscaped grounds at Scampston Hall, North Yorkshire features as a centre-piece in this video. This year 2016, those at Scampston are celebrating three centuries of the famous landscape designer Capability Brown. The classical and majestic layout of the parkland and lake is typical of his work.
It's a lovely, April Spring morning, all is burgeoning, there's blossom and blue skies. The walled garden is slowly coming to life in the warmth of early Spring sunshine and magnificent clusters of trees stand in bold relief to the the cloud-dappled azure blue sky.
Enjoy this combination of dazzling images and the atmospheric music of Robert Farnon.

I awoke to Robert Farnon's version of Ala Clare Fontaine almost every morning of my childhood.....as did hundred of thousands of children in north east Ohio from 1960 to the mid 1980's. The theme of Barnaby, a children's television show about kindness and caring. It will always be one of my favorite pieces of music. My will states that this French Canadian melody is also going to be played at my memorial service..... Perfection.

Thank you for the comment. What a lovely theme for such a show....
The music itself raises the morale, a great tonic to take every morning.
      Thanks again Jayne Anne

This is one of the most beautiful pieces of music that I ever heard. It almost makes me want to cry.

It is very evocative of my memories of the fifties and early sixties when everything seemed more pure.

Growing up in America during that period seems to have had a very different quality, at least growing up in New York City did, than your experience of that time. This is the first I have heard of Farnon and his music is the perfect reflection of what you feel about those times. While the music does not evoke those memories in me, I feel its sweetness and light, qualities that are needed more than ever.

Thank you for this comment. This sort of lush, richly textured and beautifully orchestrated music is alas now something associated with the past. The feelings this music can convey are deep and the memories are readily stirred. Perhaps we have sadly now lost touch with this deep musical connection with ourselves and nature of which we are all a part of. I too feel that its sweetness and light are qualities that we all need now more than ever...Thank you again for this thoughtful comment....Best Regards to you from Jayne Anne.
