City life, that melancholy feeling of being in proximity to so many people and yet we still feel alone. The Velvet Gentleman knew the feeling all to well.
Interesting how this makes so many people sad. I just feel peaceful and in awe of Satie. I can imagine playing this on the piano and feeling the music in my body.. it's amazing. I just feel humbled
Erik was his whole life alone and died alone... he HATED when people were listening to his music as he was making it to be played in a background to enhance the mood ... but this one feels like personal piece of his loneliness and sadness being alone, heavy drinking while his life went thru his fingers..
A long time ago, when I was around 13 years old, my Dad passed away and I became an orphan and went to an orphanage because I had no other relatives that could take care of me. When I turned 18 I left the orphanage and felt completely lost. No money, no job, no perspective. In my own city except for social workers I didn't know anyone. And I came back to live in the same old apartment where I used to live poor with my father. I remember him skipping meals and pretending like he is not hungry just so he could put more food on my plate. Then soon one day I came across a photo - it was me standing in front of our building smiling but with my hand out trying to tell the person who was taking the photo not to do it, but I was clearly happy. And I tried so hard to remember when the photo was taken and who took it but I just couldn't. When I listen to Satie I always think about that photograph and that boy, I am now almost 32 years old and Satie's music makes me dream of having a conversation with my younger self. I would love to tell that boy that it's ok to cry, it's ok miss your Dad so much that you don't won't to share that feeling with anyone, you want to keep it to yourself, that it's ok to feel lonely. I would love to tell him all that and much, much more..
April 16, 2022, I was in Paris. I wandered through its streets and walked to Montmartre, the neighborhood where Erik Satie was born and lived. His house is still there, and I couldn't help but feel nostalgic when I remembered these pieces in my head.
Not only having this wonderful piece of Music to listen to, but also looking at some spectacular Paintings. What more nostalgia and peace can you get. Absolutely Magical. Shame we don't get much of this now days.
I love this particular music, especially when I want to relax and think. Contemplate on what has been, and what may come. Absolutely soul stirring, creatively inspiring.
I can understand how this could make someone feel sad but for me, this makes me feel contemplative. This is how peace and serenity would sound if they were expressed musically.
This is magic, I have been listening this beautiful song while i have been cooking delicious food. I am really so excited to discover Eric Satie. It has been a good day
I used to listen to this religiously when I lived in Las Vegas. In a way it's kind of like Paris (it even has it's own "Paris"), the bright lights, the cultural aspects, the decadent food and night life. I don't live there anymore, sadly, but this piece, especially the last part, makes me feel so happy that I had the time there that I did. I know I'll never relive that time again, but as long as I have the memories, I'm so content. Sweet memories that I'll cherish forever.
Some people listen to this beautiful music and feel melancholy about nothing in particular. But for many of us, we listen and know exactly how much we have lost. True joy is a profound remembering; true sorrow also.
Greetings from Finland. I think, we who listen Erik Satie are deep feeling people. People who are not from this world. I think, ee are from stars ... and we are often sad, because we miss our homes ... in stars ... like Erik Satie.
The sounds of innerpeace and a quiet yet sorrowful soul. Waiting to shine for those who cannot see what unfolds before them. Blindness in the light of man.
Beautiful. May be better to say that we are from the spiritual world and now our spirit is too much out of that awareness. And that this music ressonates a bit the music of that higher levels...
My bf left me after 10 years because of his depression and Covid, my dad is dying of cancer and our cat was put to sleep today. This piece comforts me.
So much time has passed me by, and yet, with me has stayed these brilliant works. I first listened to Satie's music in the sixth grade and was instantly struck by the unique and beautiful sounds of his compositional style. Nearly seven years later, here I am, in my senior year of high school, still admiring this brilliant music, as many well beyond my lifetime surely shall.
That's exactly how you are supposed to feel. Trust your feelings. So much time has passed by us all. Time the final arbiter. The clock is ticking. Admire it still.
This makes me feel as if I am on the streets on a winter morning sitting on one of the benches looking at people passing by each one of them have a different life they are different they are complex they each have their difficulties and things that make them happy It's a weird feeling but it's nice

The human body has the power to heal itself. Enjoy this time as if there is no tomorrow. Don’t think too much.
The Strange thing about the Gymnopédies is that it's meant to be background music; heard but not listened to. Satie was actually annoyed when people started listening to his playing in a café (I think) and so only wrote a few, as to him, people didn't appreciate it in the right way
@@John-nr6gg I think he wanted us to live while listening to some of his artworks, more than just stopping, listening, then going on with our day. It's like he wanted us to see his vision of the world by slowly including it into our day, by blurring the line.
@@John-nr6gg Sorry, it's hard to explain- What i mean is that he may have wanted us to consider it a part of our world, a part of reality, instead of a completely different view.
@@-randomuser-4897 I see what you mean. I wonder, though, if he factored in what we would think of his output, in our day. In his day, his advanced viewpoint was at the cutting edge; few apparently could understand it, so avant-garde was it. At this moment in history, we today have been pummelled by many global events in our lifetimes, viewed from our own living rooms - events that have rendered us needful of his insight. I think I should have said that no man is a prophet in his own land - and in his own time. We need his perspective today, more than ever before, if only to cope with today's pressures. Today, his output for us has become less avant-garde, and more chicken-soup healing, in a way that would have amazed even himself.

This reminds you of family that have passed. But also offers hope for the next generation. It makes you recall heartbreak, then love It makes you recall regret, but also joys. It also makes me consider the ultimate fate of us all. Melancholy. That is it. Beautiful.
This piece feels like silence. It quietly and gently covers the vulgar sound in life like cars on the street, knifes on a plate, gum chewing and other comon stuff, alowing for a peaceful appreciation of the beeing. It also sums itself, beeing ever-present. It's like air: It's needed, its full and ever-present.
As I see anyone talks about the paintings, the painter is Edouard León Cortés. Amazing artist! He can show us how was the atmosphere in Paris, the streets, people, everything!
Thank you so much! I was captivated with the music, and when i saw the art and focused, i was mind blown! [twice] What a brilliant artist! His work really suits the music! And i began scrolling the comments to see if the artist was mentioned. In short, thank you for your post!
This musical poem is so beautiful that I don’t have words for classifying it. The sentiment, the harmony and some sadness are present in a sublime way. The compositor is a true genius when wrote this outstanding music. Bravissimo!!! The pianist is fabulous also, congratulations.
The scenes of La Belle Époque by Edouard Cortes shown here are EXACTLY what come to mind whenever I've heard this. Melancholic, distant, contemplative, and somber, but simultaneously shimmering, alive, serene, and wonderfully, impossibly warm.
Comfort is the essence of music Satie’s music is comfortable to ear, mind and soul When I am listening to this music I feel a hundred years of solitude
I don't know who's performing these pieces but I've listened to many other artists interpretation of Satie and this set is by far my favorite. The gentle increase and decrease of tempo makes me feel like I'm walking in the park pausing every so often to notice something.
I listened to this while looking at old pictures and conversations on messenger from 2009, it feels so weird, i ended up crying and really wish i could turn back in time, things arent the same anymore
I assumed it was at least a century old BUT I still relate to it as "new" as far as remarkable classical music goes. Tchaikovsky is the same late era (all the nutcracker songs, etc). I personally don't know any household classical music that has come across AS deliberately unique, catchy/memorable and universally impactful SINCE this era (late 1800s/early 1900s). To me it is modern. To bach & beethoven, it prob sounds like mumble rap
I remember when I used to work at a little dive bar called Lenny's in midtown Manhattan, back in the early 1980's. There was an ancient upright piano in the back corner and every so often, Erik Satie would come in for a couple beers after his shift as a city bus driver. Usually after his 2nd or 3rd beer (if I'm recalling correctly, he was a pilsner man, but don't quote me on this), he'd wander back to the piano in the corner (it was kinda out of tune but good enough) and he'd start plinking around. I'd serve the other customers or wipe down the bar or whatever menial tasks a barkeep has to do, but always with my ear tuned in to Erik plinking around on that little piano in the back. With hindsight being 20/20 and all, it's clear now that he was slowly composing Gymnopedia 1 at our humble little tavern, taking inspiration from the surroundings, and his experiences driving New Yorkers all over town on that big city bus. Memories man. You just never know when history is (literally) writing itself before your eyes.
So are we! When I heard the first notes I was drawn into a state of internal peace and tranquility! It never cease to bring the same emotions over and over! A piece of heaven on a musical sheet! 😊
This music is featured in the documentary “Man On Wire” about Philippe Petit walking on tight rope between the 2 WTC towers in 1977. Movie is about Philippe’s passion and how he fell in love w the process itself, mastering the craft. Him and his close friends dedicated years to this task and the masterpiece was when he walked between the WTC towers. It’s about achieving your full potential, that inside u know u were created for this, and how it can be a spiritual experience. It’s about fulfilling ur “purpose”. Philippe and his friends fell in love w the process rather than focusing on the outcome itself. Finally when they saw it come to fruition and how much awe and inspiration it created, they were overcome w joy and a spiritual awakening. It’s also about how he fell in love w the WTC towers. Gymnopédie No. 1. Such beautiful music. May we all find our passion one day. R.I.P. to all that were lost on 9/11. 🙏
This video used motivate me when I was studying in college where lessons were in French in Turkey. Then things went not as planned and I was stuck in a shit job with no future. After all, I was accepted into a master degree and I'm coming to see the glimpse of what is left of those images now. Thanks for merging these images with this music. It gave me hope at a very fundamental point in my life.
Over 130 years ago, one afternoon in Paris, somewhere amongst the avenues and boulevards, there was a moment of beautiful stillness. Everyone who was there is now long dead, but we can experience that moment still .... imperishable.
Classic music from whole europe is relaxing af. Bach, Mozart, Bethoven, Vivaldi, Satie, Debussy and many more... I really love them all. That was art back in that time.
Interesting you mention them all because they are so different. Im a huge fan of impressionism and stuff like satie and debussy but not a huge fan of Beethoven and other classical composer. They are great for sure it is just subjective about my taste. I could listen to impressionism for hours but classic is not mine.

And an eternity for those who did, but was unable to appreciate it
A peace of life for you to cherish
April 16, 2022, I was in Paris. I wandered through its streets and walked to Montmartre, the neighborhood where Erik Satie was born and lived. His house is still there, and I couldn't help but feel nostalgic when I remembered these pieces in my head.
He wasn't born in Paris but in Honfleur.
I was there in 1890. So much SAUDADE when I rerember.
Your so lucky!
Erik is born in Honfleur
nods his house got saved. What for ? no idea.
This piece embodies the meaning of the word bittersweet.
I was at his house in Paris, pretty close to the Sacre Coeur. A great artist, able to compose emotions using notes.
I would say the same ! 🤍🤍🎶🎶
You've said this so beautifully.
So that your words are music themselves!
Beautiful!
thank you.
Very well said Anne.
Beautiful. May be better to say that we are from the spiritual world and now our spirit is too much out of that awareness. And that this music ressonates a bit the music of that higher levels...

The first one is my favorite
So much time has passed me by, and yet, with me has stayed these brilliant works. I first listened to Satie's music in the sixth grade and was instantly struck by the unique and beautiful sounds of his compositional style. Nearly seven years later, here I am, in my senior year of high school, still admiring this brilliant music, as many well beyond my lifetime surely shall.
That's exactly how you are supposed to feel.
Trust your feelings.
So much time has passed by us all.
Time the final arbiter.
The clock is ticking.
Admire it still.

The Strange thing about the Gymnopédies is that it's meant to be background music; heard but not listened to.
Satie was actually annoyed when people started listening to his playing in a café (I think) and so only wrote a few, as to him, people didn't appreciate it in the right way
It's said that no man is a prophet in his own land. We love his music, yet even he apparently could not appreciate his talent and insight.
@@John-nr6gg I think he wanted us to live while listening to some of his artworks, more than just stopping, listening, then going on with our day.
It's like he wanted us to see his vision of the world by slowly including it into our day, by blurring the line.
@@John-nr6gg Sorry, it's hard to explain-
What i mean is that he may have wanted us to consider it a part of our world, a part of reality, instead of a completely different view.

Satie was a heavy drinker and you can hear his depression in certain pieces like this one. You can hear regret and longing.
Yes. That’s what I hear.
ua-cam.com/video/ZBB0wmM8TYg/v-deo.html
Definitely longing.
Oh shut up. I hate it when people do that. You know maybe 3 facts about his life and u're like "yOu cAn aLmOsT hEaR tHe vOdkA aNd tHe SuiCidal ThUghts" You know nothing about how he felt when he composed this. Stop pretending
@@proksenospapias9327 I normally don't respond to obvious ploys to gain attention, but Shut up? Really? My comment stimulates the intellect in ways that you obviously know nothing about. My contention that is widely accepted by this society, is that children usually use those words, "shut up" and "I hate", etc.
My original comment is cogent and relatively benign. There must be something else, perhaps your personal life,, that is provoking such a ridiculously childish rant.
I like this music better than any others because you cannot tell if it's supposed to be happy, sad, or angry. The pieces combined sound like.... too good to put into words.
To remember that time when we were young and the world was full of hope and promise. Now my hair is grey and my body aches. But I still find joy in every day

This reminds you of family that have passed.
But also offers hope for the next generation.
It makes you recall heartbreak, then love
It makes you recall regret, but also joys.
Thank you
Thanks for info I will investigate 😃

This is like a distant memory that you can feel but cannot recall.
Or something from the future. Something that has to come.

This musical poem is so beautiful that I don’t have words for classifying it. The sentiment, the harmony and some sadness are present in a sublime way. The compositor is a true genius when wrote this outstanding music. Bravissimo!!! The pianist is fabulous also, congratulations.

I love the bits of malice sprinkled in here. Melancholic and angry yet hopeful it's really a human piece of art here.
The scenes of La Belle Époque by Edouard Cortes shown here are EXACTLY what come to mind whenever I've heard this. Melancholic, distant, contemplative, and somber, but simultaneously shimmering, alive, serene, and wonderfully, impossibly warm.
🙏
Thank you so much for mentioning. I was wondering who the artist was. And you are so right. They found each other in this incredible music video.
Wow you really nailed it!
Comfort is the essence of music
Satie’s music is comfortable to ear, mind and soul
When I am listening to this music
I feel a hundred years of solitude
When I was 19 I first heard this and never forgot it. It brings back those wonderful college years.
Keep going, you were right all the time,
It's just that you didn't know it,
At the time.
Or perhaps you did.
This is a nostalgia inducing piece that never fails to stop me in my tracks whenever I hear this.
I don't know who's performing these pieces but I've listened to many other artists interpretation of Satie and this set is by far my favorite. The gentle increase and decrease of tempo makes me feel like I'm walking in the park pausing every so often to notice something.

Me too.
Me, too.
I'm amazed of how old this composition is. For me it has always sound very modern.
I had no idea it was old. I just heard it everywhere and assumed it was from some meme or anime or something.
@@DoofenSpyroDragon16 te falta cultura amigo
When I heard it, to me it sounded something Thelonius Monk or Dave Brubeck would play.
It is modern
beautifully said.
Lindas palabras

No words... this piece of art will resonate forever. Forever thankful for this sir Satie 🙏
Comfort and gracefulness of this music are unequaled and immeasurable
Over 130 years ago, one afternoon in Paris, somewhere amongst the avenues and boulevards, there was a moment of beautiful stillness. Everyone who was there is now long dead, but we can experience that moment still .... imperishable.
I've been listening to the Gymopedies nonstop since I discovered them on The Queens Gambit. A true masterpiece that I'm thankful to have.
