Great video, sir! I remember this system and most of these games (except Blue Thunder). Never owned one, but like a previous poster, I did own Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future VHS "games" and interactive fighter that came with it. Similar concept, but maybe a little more advanced than the ActionMax. If you took too many hits, your pilot would be ejected from the cockpit. I really enjoyed it at the time.
i remember watching the commercials for this system back in the day! Never owned it or seen one. Cool to see Action Max in action though! We've identified some possible evil forces in our own back yard, i'm giving you the green light to clean them out. Fortefyre your the best! Now get up there & prove it!
I'm 49 and my younger brother got this for xmas one year. I remember it being a "one and done" type of thing and I think we only ever had the pack-in tape.
Great video. Vague memories of that console...but even then in my pre-teen mind it just like you said...once the tape was over, so was the game. None of the content would change on a playthrough. Break. Good on you for your preservation of this piece of gaming history. So much is being lost so quickly, and there are few efforts being made to save much of it. Well done.
Thank you! I look forward to doing a separate line of videos dedicated to a "console showcase". Ones that review the consoles and dictate their strengths and weaknesses.
I actually own Blue Thunder as well as the four other games for it. I found my copy for $150. I also have 44 other complete console libraries, from SNES, Genesis, to the XBOX and Wii.
My dad went all out. This was before Game Boy keep in mind. We had both Captain Power ships. I lost the plastic cockpit lid on the white one, but it didn't matter. It had action figures too. Videos were about the same thing as the ones in this video, just all Buck Rogers style.
Seems like they really were on the right track for something great, with the wrong hardware. I had never ever heard of this. Thanks for sharing it. Cheers sir
I had the similar Captain Power toys instead. My parents were great at getting me cool toys from expensive failed toy lines on 75% off clearance and I got almost the whole line that way. I believe there were 3 animated tapes released, but what was really really cool was the syndicated live action show, (which had like a Tron/Terminator/Mad Max feel) that features flashing panels so you could interact with it via the various toys. The best part of it was that if you got hit 3 times, the cockpit of the jet/gun would eject your figure while it was still in your hand and you had to real time see him get yeeted to the ground. It was way ahead of its time.
Holy crap man that brings me back thanks for that! This reminded me of a VHS game I recall when I was a kid in the 80s I can't remember the name of it but it was VHS based and the light gun you used was a fighter jet. I was you against a robot force and if you don't "pull up" (hold the jet up tp block the signal) in time the thing would buzz and cockpit would eject. Tell me you have that in your collection.
Haha, that would be Captain Power and the XT-7 Power Jet. If you got "hit" your action figure would eject. There were 3 tapes for it. It also worked with the TV show. I don't have one yet, but it is in the works. The big issue is finding one that still functions.
As a 17 year old who loves retro games and tech, stuff like this is pretty intriguing to me. Its pretty cool that you can use a vhs tape for a game. You make great videos!
I wonder, would it be possible to make your own Action Max titles, if they only really consist of a flashing light. Like could I add the flashing light to John Wick clips and run it through an emulator. I remember having an Action Max as a kid oddly enough. I think we only had the jet fighter game, and Pops Ghostly. I remember that game scared me as a small kid, I think it started my uneasyness in FMV games. Literally every Sega CD FMV game, gave me the willies when a character would talk directly in the camera at you, especially if they were mad.
I had a chance to own one, as a kid. It was at a yard sale, and I never saw it for sale on store shelves. It didn't impress, other than I would have owned every game system with infinite money. Btw: Blue Thunder = Thunder Blade, and it's not even subtle about it. So it did appear on Master System, in a way...
never heard of this but very similar to captain power looks like. You said S tier for one game, saying it wasnt bad but not the best. S tier is the best tier, its above A, no?
@@Fortefyre our? I watch a lot of vids for rankings in the games i play like WoW and Diablo and most of the rankings S tier is tops but they say god tier within S. All good im just confused because ive never seen anything else where S isnt the tops. You are def close to God tier in vids if we use that scale.
The twitch community built the rating system back in like...2017, I've been using it ever since. F-A, S for exemplary games, and G for those that are the highest echelon of games historically for me.
How long does it take to play an action max game? Sir I set time. I guess so since it's a video cassette. So let me know about that. That is just so interesting.
So every action max game has a calibration phase before the actual game start so you can fine tune the distances and make sure it's fully set up. After a minute of that, the games go on for an average of 14 minutes.
There were board games that also used the VCR tapes to tell you what to do next. I played one with my friends last year. It was a good time.
This is true! I remember a dungeon board game, I believe the AVGN did an episode on it with Board James a while back.

I really want to get a XT-7 jet and try it out lol.

Seems about right lol. I would assume it would lose its charm rather quickly.
You should do a full play through of that ghost game closer to Halloween.
I could! I might lol.

We had the Action Max with Sonic Fury and Pops Ghostly. I played it quite a few times, I think until we got a NES.
That's so cool!

I had this and Captain Power. Both were kinda garbage. Remember it though for sure.

What a weird way to put out your games, if your vcr eats the tape or wears it out over time I guess your out of a game
Absolutely, not to mention it isn't much for the replayability aspect.
How often do you buy games ?
Not as often as I used to. Maybe once a month.
