Pitchers in baseball aren't allowed to apply any foreign substance to the ball. It's a rule because, back in the day, pitchers would smear the ball with all kinds of tobacco juice, spit, dirt, Vaseline, cutting it with razor blades, and such to scuff the ball up making it harder to see and increase movement. After a guy died from getting hit in the head by a ball he couldn't see, they started really changing things, and now they change the ball as soon as it touches dirt, and pitchers aren't allowed to use / apply any foreign substance to the ball. Pine tar is very sticky. Hitters use it on their bats to get a better grip / keep it from flying out of their hands when they swing hard, and as throwing a ball 100 mph takes a lot of force, a little pine tar helps them grip and makes for fewer balls slipping and going wild. Using pine tar isn't cheating the way that spitting on the ball or cutting into it is, increasing motion and making your pitches much harder to hit, and some batters would rather the pitcher have a better grip to reduce the chance of a 98 mph pitch slipping and heading right for them, but it is still against the rules. What happened here is the opposing team's manager asked the umpires to check the pitcher for foreign substances, and once the umpires saw it, it's an automatic ejection. Umpires won't usually check unless they're asked to, and managers won't usually ask, as it's likely every team has or will have someone who uses pine tar to get a better grip on the ball, it doesn't really confer an advantage, and people are usually more subtle about it.

Pitchers in baseball aren't allowed to apply any foreign substance to the ball. It's a rule because, back in the day, pitchers would smear the ball with all kinds of tobacco juice, spit, dirt, Vaseline, cutting it with razor blades, and such to scuff the ball up making it harder to see and increase movement. After a guy died from getting hit in the head by a ball he couldn't see, they started really changing things, and now they change the ball as soon as it touches dirt, and pitchers aren't allowed to use / apply any foreign substance to the ball.
Pine tar is very sticky. Hitters use it on their bats to get a better grip / keep it from flying out of their hands when they swing hard, and as throwing a ball 100 mph takes a lot of force, a little pine tar helps them grip and makes for fewer balls slipping and going wild. Using pine tar isn't cheating the way that spitting on the ball or cutting into it is, increasing motion and making your pitches much harder to hit, and some batters would rather the pitcher have a better grip to reduce the chance of a 98 mph pitch slipping and heading right for them, but it is still against the rules. What happened here is the opposing team's manager asked the umpires to check the pitcher for foreign substances, and once the umpires saw it, it's an automatic ejection. Umpires won't usually check unless they're asked to, and managers won't usually ask, as it's likely every team has or will have someone who uses pine tar to get a better grip on the ball, it doesn't really confer an advantage, and people are usually more subtle about it.

It's illegal to purposely put pine tar on any part of your body/uniform, unless it's a result of having touched it and where it's been rubbed. You can't load your helmet with it, you can put it on the handles of your bat, no more than 18" up from the butt of the bat. No, you cannot load it on your helmet. Rule 8:00-8:02.
