Brad was 100% right it was about the loss of friends. This song is crazy when it is played in a large crowd because everyone sings along and the energy just grows.
they dedicated this song to my friend that passed away in 07'. Such an awesome group of guys that heard about my buddy dying and us playing this at his funeral. They brought his brother on stage and played this song for his little brother. I have nothing but the utmost respect for this band.
Just makes me think of how great Brad and Lex are. I have heard of Pennywise but never actually heard this band. Pretty cool they show music to us who truely don't know some of the songs! Although i am a metal head so i have heard like 95% but once in a while i get shocked.
This must be seen live to appreciate its passion and beauty. The crowd would storm the stage and sings along. Me and thousands of others have literally been on stage with pennywise singing this song.
if you lose a friend and you both liked pennywise, this is the song. Live performances stir up an ocean of emotions from the crowd. We all have fallen friends.
I've had the pleasure to see this live many times and it's insane. The buzz, the energy it's insane. One show the crowd kept singing as the whole crowd excited the venue. I will never forget that
one of the best live experiences ever, remember singing along with them at a festival and we all just kept singing long after they left the stage while we all walked back our tents... I ditched Red Hot Chilli Peppers to watch them and it was definitely the right choice, such a great band
Agreed man! When I got to see them I just got to the front row and fuck authority started! I was very bruised up after the show, but would do it again in a heartbeat. They just give off so much energy live.
Had a good old skating buddy that I knew since 2006 as a Junior in HS. He hung himself last Tuesday. This song is still on his MySpace profile too. It’s an awesome theme for anyone who lost their closest friend(s) in life.
I have had the privilege of seeing this performed live on several occasions. With the whole crowd chanting on the hook, it's always an intense experience.
Singing this song while moshing arm in arm with your best homies is such a vibe. A friend of mine in college is from the same town as this band (Hermosa Beach, CA) and we’d road trip down there for 4th of July to watch them play a concert on the front porch of a house that faced out into a cul de sac. The entire cul de sac would be full of people just having the best time. Such good memories!
Wow , im absolutely glad and surprised you are reacting to this song. So much that I’m writing this before even watching the video. You got me actually commenting for the first time lol . Let’s get into it \w/
Jason Matthew Thirsk (December 25, 1967 - July 29, 1996) was the bass player of the California punk rock band Pennywise from 1988 through his death in 1996.
To really get the feel of this song and the connection with the fans you need to watch a live version. You'll know when the "Whoa" from the crowd hits.
Pennywise was one of my first shows, they played with the Skatenigs at a small club in San Antonio TX. I was just a little skate punk back then, and my has the world changed in the last 20+ years.
When the Ducks hockey team scores a goal and the Angels baseball team hits a homerun they play this song at their home stadiums. Pennywise is from Orange County CA.
I saw Pennywise at winterXgames back in the day. It was great. This song hits harder now for me because two of the people I was with at the concert have died since.
This song is quintessential Pennywise. They have great hearts and music. They remember JMT at every show. JMT actually wrote this song for his lost friends
I know the Anaheim Angels use Bro Hymn for home runs and the AnaheimDucks use it for goals. Pennywise like so many so cal punk rock bands was either born in or adopted by Orange County, CA. We love that stuff!! 🤙🏻
Fun fact, since 2005 the Anaheim Ducks play this song after every goal. And since 2017 (I think) the Los Angeles Angels play the song after every homerun. Even though Pennywise is from LA, this song is kind of an anthem in Orange County and Anaheim especially.
I saw Pennywise when I was 18 and it was ether their 25 anniversary tour and they played this song at the end and I was able to be up there singing with a bunch of other people who hopped on stage. Literally one of the best shows I’ve ever seen plus millions of dead cops was there too so extra bonus 🔥
to this day, they still play this as the last song of their set. and the crowd goes nuts and forms a huge pit. every. fucking. time. I've been in 2 of them, and I've witnessed 3 others, and holy shit, those were great pits.
Finally got to see these dudes a cupple of years ago here in Auckland Aotearoa new zealand took my mate who was a massive fan of PENNYWISE and dying of lung cancer 9 days later he died he used every bit of energy he could muster and staunched it out and was happy for an hourish almost forgot it was going to be his last gig smiling and happy AND THAT'S HOW I WANT TO REMEMBER DENNIS my BRO
Wow, that made me tear up. I absolutely love this story. So glad your buddy made it to the show. Rest in peace to your bro and God bless you for being there with him. Your story is an example of what it's all about. Thanks for sharing 👍
Fantastic song. Pennywise is a favorite when it comes to punk. I usually go for the live version of this. It’s better in my opinion. If you do more pennywise I highly recommend “fuck authority” or “let us hear your voice”
oh the memories of days gone bye brought back and hearing this song again lol... Good stuff guys as usual, keep up the discovering of music now and then ✌🙏✊👊😎
The thing for me with Pennywise is that some of their lyrics are so deep. Even if the music seems very simple at first. Like "What if I", "My own way" or "Badge of pride". And more.
I just saw them perform this live at the PUNK in DRUBLIC tour in Ventura. The last time I saw them was 18 years prior. It was glorious and they still had it.
It was a hymnal to his bro that he lost, minute 4:23. Well to a few of their friends that they lost. They first had the idea to write it for their late bassist Jason Matthew Thirsk who died from a self-inflicted gunshot. This song is about talking to your friends and and family about things you are struggling with, that your not alone. "Life is the most precious thing you can lose" and "Just remember whose side it is that you're on" I believe are the most impactful. To many people think that their the only ones going through something and that the only way is the end it. We are more a like than we are different. Unfortunately I've lost people dear to me and I've also been in bad places, that thankfully I was able to get out of. I hope that whoever reads this that might be going through a dark time, just realize that you are not alone and if your willing to change whatever is holding you down you can. Sometimes just talking about whatever false reality you might of created in your head to someone else. You might hear yourself and realize just how crazy of a thought that you were believing. Trust me it happens to everyone. Brad & Lex I think you should check out a band called Fat Freddy's Drop, they are from New Zealand. If you like music with great lyrics they are one of my favorites. Here is a unique find from a rare song of theirs and its called "Ground My Ego" they don't start singing till minute 2:57. ua-cam.com/video/8ZR8J9RNF98/v-deo.html
Half the NHL uses the “woah” part of this song as their goal celebration song. I know all of the California teams do. He says Brett. Brett is the guy who put this out. He plays guitar in bad religion.
They end every show with this. I'm 46 and my brother is 45. I introduced him to this band and for a good 19yrs he went to every show. My brother is a square
If you go to a pennywise show, the crowd start singing the “chant” portion of this in line to get in and don’t stop till the show is over, it’s pretty rad imho
Regarding stadium anthems: This IS one! The chant from this song is the "home goal" song of the NHL Anaheim Ducks. Pennywise are from Orange County (where Anaheim is), and the team asked for the band's permission to use the song. The band said it was an honor. Yeah, this is just a classic. Can still remember them finishing their NYE gig some 26-27 years ago at the Falls Festival. Entire crowd singing along. Incredible. Don't know how many times I've seen them again since, but this is always a crowd favorite.
I've been rocking with you guys for a long time i just don't comment but I had to today. Pennywise!! Thank you for playing music that matters to people and can move or uplift. Punk Rock has a lot of different sounds and culture but its always been about doing what you want and its not how you dress or how fast a song is its about taking your own path and on the way we find people who are doing the same. You guys are the punk rock of reactions cause you wont shy away and if you like or hate it you will be truthful. Thank you. On a side note Social Distortion!! that was pretty awesome if you do anymore SxDx try an older song Another State of Mind or telling them both are great songs and represent Orange County Ca, Punk Ruck.

Colvin was my roommate and Nichols lived with me from time to time. Both were my best friends. Carlos died when a kid, joyriding in his mom's car, hit him on his motorcycle. HOLY SHIT..... PENNYWISE!!!!! Man thus brings me back to my skater days of halfpipes, street style, punk music, weed and not give a fk about anything except thrashin' and surfin'..... Hell Yeah!!!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🤘😎🤘
"Bro Hymn Tribute" is the 2nd version of this song, dedicated to the late band member that wrote the original (the version you heard, about 3 of his friends who passed away). BASSNECTAR - "BRO HYMN TRIBUTE" is a great remix of the 2nd song.

Right on point brother. 🤙
Brad was 100% right it was about the loss of friends. This song is crazy when it is played in a large crowd because everyone sings along and the energy just grows.
I saw this in 97 when bassist jason thirsk just had killed himself....
I saw this love and I completely agree it's so cool being in a big crowd with everyone singing along
For the fallen.
Played this many times live. There's nothing like every person in the crowd chanting.

@@thesaint9276 sorry about the passing of your friend. They are a good group of guys and it is awesome they were able to do that for you and the boys.
One of Pennywise's staple songs...really brings me back, both to the 90s and to a few weeks ago when I was rockin' this album!
Cool!
I'd say alien is the big one this in second I use to love pennywise back in the day.

NHL hockey teams use the song as a goal song which is played after every goal scored at home.

I have been fortunate enough to have been on stage singing this epic song with them. Greatest moment of my Punk Rock life.
me too man, i whoa ohhhed with pennywise and one time i whoa ohhhed with the misfits on stage. soooo much alcohol.
This is THE punk anthem of the 90’s and one of the best songs you could ever see live.
Wow did not expect you two to review this, one of my favorites from my teenage days in the late 90’s. Great review,
"If I die you die..." definitely makes it a tribute to brotherhood!
Great song. The lalala part is often used in football (real football) stadiums in The Netherlands when a goal is scored.
They play this song last at EVERY show. It's a tradition and the crowd goes NUTS!
I have had the privilege of seeing this performed live on several occasions. With the whole crowd chanting on the hook, it's always an intense experience.
this song makes me think of san diego/ orange county. Padres, Chargers, Ducks and Angels all used this song after scoring and or winning.
The Flyers use to have this as their goal song too.
