I lost a very close friend to brain cancer last year. Some weeks before his passing, he put me in charge of the music at his funeral, and he requested only one song: Bro Hymn! I thought it was a bit unfit for a funeral, so I found an acoustic cover to play during the service. At some point, I had remorse... He requested the original, not a pale copy. I added the song to the lineup at the last minute to be played at the end of the ceremony. And the rest is history (to me), every one of his friend raised up to sing the choruses. For a brief three minutes, we were teen again and Bill was still with us. That how powerful this simple riff is!
Lost my mom at 18 and whenever I want remember her I listen to it cause when she was alive she kept talkin to me stoping listening to this 'demon music' which in fact is true love!
Really? It's a very strange choice given how it's the same bassline the entire time and it's not complicated beyond being a 6 note run instead of 4/8. The song it's great and has an important message, but there's very little too dissect here.
Every punk band I've been in since this song came out, and that's quite a few, the bass player always wanted to cover this song. It is a bass player's song for sure.
Bro Hymn means a lot to me. I saw Pennywise several times in the 90s, originally when Thirsk was alive and later after he had passed. My brother was with me for many of those shows. That same brother of mine unfortunately passed away more than a decade ago. Fast forward to 2024 and I saw Pennywise live for the first time in over 20 years. In the context of losing my brother and a few others close to me over the years, Bro Hymn had taken on a completely new meaning that I didn't fully understand as a teenager. It was bittersweet, but incredible. When it is performed live, it's not just Pennywise playing the song, the entire crowd is involved. It's truly an experience.
This is the traditional closer for Pennywise shows and has been for...well, forever. The crowd knows it and waits for it and knows to make sure, no matter how much they put into the rest of the show, to always save energy for the finale and "Bro Hymn". If you can find a live version, you will see a completely different energy. Though the updated version recorded for the Full Circle album also includes Jason's brother Justin Thirsk from the band 98 Mute.
As an audience member, there is something magical that happens when you feel united in harmony with not only the crowd, but also with the band, like you are all performing for one another AND also together. It’s like it taps into this primal bond of human connection, collaboration, and creation.
I remember being at warp tour 96 in Asbury park NJ, it was just a few days after the funeral for Jason , it was an emotional affair that stays with me to today. This is a song that make the crowd feel like part of the band .
I was at the Stone Pony in 96 for the Warped Tour too. My kids are probably sick of me telling them about that show, but it was such an awesome thing to be part of. I still get the feels every time I hear that song.
I was 14 years old the first time i saw Pennywise in Torrance California. I'm now 44 and will be seeing them next month with NOFX. I can't really put into words how this song made me feel the first time i heard it live at 14. The emotion. The crowd participation. Everything that it still makes me feel 30 years later. Such a simple but amazing song.
Got my single and only tattoo like when I was 17. Everybody laughed and said I will regret it. After 22 years I still listen to Pennywise like the first day and the lyrics helped me in some hard days. Cheers! ❤
Early Pennywise was special, man. I'm so stoked you chose to dive in on those albums. "About Time" is also an incredible album, but like others have said, we are all happy you chose this song.
100% agree! Unknown Road and About Time are tied for my favorites followed closely by ST and Full Circle. Never dug their newer stuff too much, but their first 5 or so albums are the best.
The largest circle pit I’ve ever seen in person was Warped Tour ‘97 and Jim said he wanted the pit around the sound tent. The engineers seemed genuinely worried.
I saw them open for Danzig. I went to the front towards the end of PW. As soon as I got near the pit. I lost 2 buttons off my vest and my beer disappeared into the crowd😅
me too buddy. The voice of justin screaming and crying always make me emotional. Last year I was at the punk in the park and justin sang his part of the song but he song for their dad that passed away. It was awesome.
One of the many times I saw them live, the crowd kept the chant (and the pit) going well past when they were off-stage. The band came back in one at a time and reprised the chorus. Felt like it went on forever, and I think we were all hoping it would.
Like a valcano, it builds and builds until you have to explode in chant. The emotional Rollercoaster it takes you on is amazing for a simple song. Exactly like loosing someone. The heaviness of loss, the sadness, anger, just wanting to scream at the top of your lungs so they can hear you. Awesome tribute!
@@johnnyace6169 same. I got hit by a car while walking across the street in 2011 and I have 36 pieces of surgical grade titanium holding my skeleton together from my waist down. Doesn't matter, I'm in that pit. I'll deal with the consequences later.
Trust me, there is nothing like being in the pit during the song. Everyone coming together to sign this song (crowd chant). Gives me goosebumps everytime I see them live. Yes, it is used in sports. Jacksonville Jaguars used it for touchdown scores at home games. It's equally cool as hell getting the whole crowd doing the chant.
I've been watching your channel since you started doing these reacts videos and I've been waiting that whole time for you to do this song. Thank you so much for this! This song holds a very special place in my life. My friend was a massive fan of Pennywise and unfortunately took his own life several years ago. This song is a constant reminder of the good times I had with him, it's a simple and straight-forward punk song and brings me back to much simpler times in life.
Single most berserk pit i have ever experienced was at my first Pennywise show at the Theater in Fort Lauderdale back in 97' That ish was pure insanity...looks like the whole room was running at 2x speed, the whole club was a pit. Madness
Best live song ever!!!!! The crowd interactions I've had at Pennywise shows throughout the years have been priceless. Love the band. If I remember correctly, Jason wrote the piano intro to the song Unknown Road from the album with the same name. They later featured the whole piano piece on the album Full Circle.
still feel SO JELAOUS that you have a chance to listen all this beautiful punk music you're discovering lately, for the first time in your life! Would be so rad to forget it, just to feel again that emotions that fill you up when you first hear this music.
Just recently saw them play this song live again! 10k people all singing together swaying moshing crowdsurfing! Saw a bunch of tears in the crowd too. Was awesome!
If you’ve ever lost someone special this song is an anthem to your friend, brother or sister. I’ve loved this song for 30 years. Never fails to uplift when you’re feeling down.
One of the bittersweet things about punk is all the tribute songs. I lost my brother a few years ago, and while songs like these make me cry it also makes me feel less alone. Rancid's Otherside in particular, a lot of the lyrics are true for me and him, and a Rancid concert was the last time I saw him
Iconic song, touching tribute, been a Pennywise fan since the early 90s! This was the goal jingle for a Bundesliga soccer club over years (VfB Stuttgart)... didn't love the club, but loved the song, sung by 40.000! When my club once lost 0:7 in Stuttgart, at least the music was good... 😉😁 Thanks for your reaction, cheers from Germany🤘
Sounds a lot like Social Distortion - 1945. If Fat Mike is on a Pennywise set, usually he will come onto stage and yell ATOM BOOOOOMB, TNT instead of the WOOOAH parts. Always cracks me up
I love your comment on the "energy" of the intro. I feel like the tone set for the energy continues throughout the song even when all the instruments and gang chorus come in. Probably why it feels so great as a fan of the Anaheim Ducks (Bro Hymn is used as their goal song and beloved by fans).
I remember watching them at punk rock holiday in Slovenia, there were flares and everyone invaded the stage during bro hymn, Fletcher was crowdsurfing playing the song. 3 hours later lying trying to sleep in my tent i heard people walking by still singing "woooah woaah wooah".
Thank you so much for analyzing this iconic song. I will always remember seeing them live, ending the show with this song and asking security to let anybody comes on stage. The stage ended full, no room left, and the whole crowd singing along. It still gives me shivers thinking about this moment almost than 30 years ago.
I’ve been going to pennywise shows since i was 15 (28 years😢) including back in July for NOFX’s last tour, and this song never gets old. I also lost a close friend almost 20 years go that shared a love of this band and punk rock in general, so I’ll never stop listening to this song/band!
When I played with PW a few years back Jim pulled me and one of my mates on stage mid song to sing this before getting the rest of the support bands on to do the crowd vocals for the end of the song. I think maybe my favourite memory.
This is the first song I learn when I got a bass. You're definitely right when thinking a Pennywise live show is crazy !! This song is really simple, repetitive but man, this is an anthem, easy to sing, easy to remember with a heavy message of brotherhood, beautiful lyrics! Thanks for this video.
I haven't watched yet, but Bro Hymn, Stickin' In My Eye, and Chick Magnet were the first bass lines so many punk fans of a certain age learned back in the day. *Guilty as charged.
10:35 You catch Pennywise purpose - A lot of their songs has thoughtful and meaningful lyrics with spoken parts not chanted or singed like that one - that's Jim & Fletcher (vocals and guitars) msg to everyone - you gotta keep it simple thru life like my songs and spread good vibes worldwide! I love that u finally did this song. 37 here when my mom died when I was 18 i kept this song playing and playing forever - one of my fav songs ever
An absolute classic! I saw Pennywise twice this year and both times they had the openers come join them on stage and the bassist play along to the song. An absolutely iconic punk bass line!
Always a great song, I’ve been lucky enough to hear it live several times. At a show in Sydney that Pennywise played with the Bronx I was basically standing next to Byron the drummer for the entire show, the Guy is an animal. This is the kind of song that the crowd starts singing before the band even starts playing it. It’s spin tingling. Also, the band puts the chorus into double time after the last chorus and gives it a full punk rock Gallup. It’s great for a circle pit.
I saw them at Warped Tour in 1996 just a few days before Jason died. They dedicated this song to him wishing him to get better. A year later I saw them again and the dedication took on a whole new meaning - very emotional.
THE punk rock anthem!!!!… Excellent choice!… Been rocking Pennywise since the Transworld Skate video days!… You should check out the Vandals!… Joe Escallante is hugely underrated!… Anarchy Burger, Wannabe Manor, or Pirates Life are all killer songs!… They also do a great cover of Come out Fighting by Pennywise to honor JMT, and Joe rocks that song!
Great time for this video, my best friends since kindergarten passed away last week, and this was always one of our favorites to blast while we were driving. RIP Max, this one's for you!
I remember this from the early 90s and have thought as punk songs go this was probably the best and most well written song. It’s stands out and still brings emotions from the past. Lost close friends and used to cover this in punk bands dedicating it to those guys and gals. Man such a great song.
Your analysis is always next level. About 15 years ago I was in a punk band, and we covered this song at every gig. Certainly a crowd pleaser. In the live version, they end the song off with that galloping beat and we did this too - pit goes absolutely bananas
Not gonna lie, I can't listen to this song without tearing up. Thanks for covering this one, it's cool to see you break it down. RIP Jason. Miss you, bro
Glad to see there's others here in the comments that get emotional on this powerful song. I can't tell you how many times I have cried to this song and thinking of those no longer with us. THIS ONE'S FOR YOU!
A true and timeless anthem. The emotional piano piece at the end of Full Circle is an amazing as well, it's repeating in variations until it flows through in a progression that just totally gets me every time. Of course no bass on that one, but since it's a hidden track a lot of people don't hear it.
This was the first song i ever learned on bass. After the years, ive lost alot of friends due to various things, so now everytime i play this, its for them
I'm new to your channel and I absolutely LOVE that you're looking to the more technical punk bands (Propagandhi, A Wilhelm Scream etc). I think you should check out some lesser known and even more technical punk bands like, Fair Do's, Almeida, Action Men, Darko (UK), Much The Same (their track Skeletons is a bassline to behold), Belvedere and Straighten Things Out (bassist from that band had an injured left hand so fretted everything the opposite way and his basslines may as well be sorcery).
I went to an all boys high school in Southern California during the 90s, so Bro Hymn resonated there more most places. So much so that the lyrics were part of our senior yearbook theme. And the crowds definitely went off when they played that song, though by the end you had your arm around the dude next to you in the pit while you sang your heart out to the crowd singalong part.
I remember i cover That song in 1993 in a few concerts. i played the guitar riffs, but i Muted alot my play, to hear the Bassline. My Bassist pick the song with his bare hands, (no pick) and sounds gorgeus. One of the best parts of my life. We cover some Pennywise, Lagwagon and others like Misfits or Suicidal Tendencies. And was some fun :)
This song always makes me think about my friend Adam who passed away in a car accident when we were in high school in 1997. It also makes me think about the brotherhood I had with all of our friends in the wake of this tragedy. I try not to listen to this song often so that it’s more meaningful when I do hear to it. It gives me goosebumps every. single. time.
I played around in the ozone layer of the music biz for a few years in the 90's. I produced a tiny local origination (basically local paid access as opposed to public access). Super cool PR exec took "our show" to a Pennywise show. Great show, it was in Long Beach, CA. the crowd was surly.
Perfect people, Land of the Free other great Pennywise tracks with cool bass lines. Honestly, almost all of their songs have great bass tracks. It would be cool is if you have a drummer friend come on and take a crack at some of these drum tracks. Drumeo is fantastic, but they don't get to the punk stuff like you have been. I've seen them live. The entire crowd regardless of how big the venue sings "Whoooaaa Whooooaa Whoooaa Whooaa" with the singable part of the riff. Its crazy. They have a live album. You should check it out.
Love PW live to this day. This song never fails to unify the entire crowd. By the time this song ends the entire crowd is an army that could take on the world. ❤
I KNOW IVE SAID IT BEFORE; BUT ITS SUCH A JOY TO WATCH YOU EXPERIENCE NEW MUSIC FOR THE FIRST TIME, AND TO HEAR YOUR THOUGHTS, INSIGHT AND ENJOYMENT. THANK YOU FOR GIVING SOME PRAISE AND RESPECT TO THESE BANDS, PUNK BANDS DONT EVER GET THE APPRECIATION THEY DESERVE FOR THEIR HEART AND MUSICIANSHIP
I think I may have suggested this band before, but if you dig the sporting event vibe, you should check the Toy Dolls. Pretty much all their songs have what sounds like hard chorus from sporting events, and Olga, the only permanent member over the band's history is pretty much a guitar virtuoso in his own right and he has a signature playing style. You should check Dez the Demon Decorator, or Terry Talking, from their Absurd Ditties album (the album also has an instrumental cover of Toccata in Dm that goes insanely hard); another track that is very bass forward and has the hard chorus (and opens with a sea chanty lol) is Decca's Drunken Dilemma from their Episode XIII album.
When I was in a punk band we covered "I want Candy" because everyone knows the lyrics and we would throw the back up mic into the crowd and let them join in. Easiest 2 note song in the world but everyone loved it
I saw them play this in 99 closing the warped tour. I suggested leaving before they got to it. So we did. Walking up the hill to exit they started playing it so we turned to watch. Trees were literally uprooted and passed around like surfers.
Im.going to see NoFX tonight at Riot Fest here in Chicago. Then again on Sunday for their last show here. Pennywise will play right before them Sunday night. Pennywise closes their set with Brohym and I'll be standing next to my best friend/ drummer for it all!!!!!
Saw Pennywise support Rise Against once, once they finished nobody gave a fuck about Rise Against. Whole crowd was just singing the chorus of this song until about 3 songs into Rise Against's set. Check out some rise against songs, sick bassist.
I lost a very close friend to brain cancer last year. Some weeks before his passing, he put me in charge of the music at his funeral, and he requested only one song: Bro Hymn! I saw them at Warped Tour in 1996 just a few days before Jason died. They dedicated this song to him wishing him to get better. A year later I saw them again and the dedication took on a whole new meaning - very emotional.
There is a live video of the song that shows the real energy. Fans get on stage and sing with them. Is madness at a live show
Such an amazing song. The tribute version is so great I'm looking forward to the reaction as well!
Love it! Thanks for the kind words!
I'm not crying. You're crying. 😭
I've seen them live a few times and Pennywise played this song last in every single show, a wild ride, thanks for the analysis, Mark 🤘
Not gonna lie, I can't listen to this song without tearing up.
Thanks for covering this one, it's cool to see you break it down.
RIP Jason. Miss you, bro
I love Pennywise, love to hear you breaking this one down! I grew up playing
this.
You really have to hear this song live to appreciate this one. I love when the crowd leave still singing the woohooohoo.
Glad to see there's others here in the comments that get emotional on this powerful song. I can't tell you how many times I have cried to this song and thinking of those no longer with us. THIS ONE'S FOR YOU!
And the grief catharsis singing along with this live is real.
My very first show in high school was All, Strung Out, and Pennywise. They ended on Bro Hymn and my life changed forever! Very powerful song.
The defining song of Positive Masculinity. When you got friends to back you up, you know you're in a good place.
I think you should check out some lesser known and even more technical punk bands like,
Fair Do's, Almeida, Action Men, Darko (UK), Much The Same (their track Skeletons is a bassline to behold), Belvedere and Straighten Things Out (bassist from that band had an injured left hand so fretted everything the opposite way and his basslines may as well be sorcery).
Bro Hymn is the first song I learned on bass, felt so cool when you are learning and it sounds right.
As a 16-year-old kid, there was nothing better than getting on stage while my friends' band was playing this song and doing the gang vocals.
The phenomenal bassline of the late great Jason Matthew Thirsk
This was the first song I ever learned on any instrument 23 years ago. It has a very special place in my heart!
Great show, it was in Long Beach, CA. the crowd was surly.
seeing this live at nofx's last ever (3) shows is gonna make me cry
Love the PW. RIP Jason, Kevin, Clovin and Nagles.
I recommend their track F*ck Authority next.
YES!!!!! The song that introduced me to Pennywise!
This song live is incredible. So much energy! The mosh pits are real mosh pits. Saw them live twice in the last 3 years.
Love PW live to this day. This song never fails to unify the entire crowd. By the time this song ends the entire crowd is an army that could take on the world. ❤
Seeing this played at warped tour with them bringing everyone on stage was so good
smoke on the water, bro hymn, 7 nation army - the holy trinity of simple memorable rock riffs
Офигеть, наконец то и до неё добрались и до pennywise 🥹❤️
Thank you, friend! Much more to come! 🤘🏼
That one is actually on the list! 😎
@@LowEndUniversity Heck yeah, I really need to get into the patreon game to be more in the loop on stuff 👀
Hey, me too!
@JakeBass666
Fuckin A bro! Well, if you see 2 Guys with very prominently displayed/matching misfits and bad religion tattoos, make our acquaintance!
Pinback - Penelope
One of the simplest basslines I've heard, yet it sounds so damn good.
This is the first song I learned how to play on my very first bass that I bought back in good old 1996. Good times!!
Saw Pennywise support Rise Against once, once they finished nobody gave a fuck about Rise Against. Whole crowd was just singing the chorus of this song until about 3 songs into Rise Against's set.
Check out some rise against songs, sick bassist.
Such a deep well of bass goodness with Pennywise. You should check out Society, Fight Til You Die, Perfect People and Alien
Oh yeah! One of my favorite Pennywise bass lines.
i got very excited when you said the riff has a singable quality
I wish everyday that i could hear a song and immediately play it on an instrument
