TNT, I love your analysis! You actually break it down and explained how these bands of my youth are NOT pop punk (« I’m late for school » had me in stitches). Love your vids, from a new subscriber. Much love
To put it mildly... when bands like Green Day and the Offspring became wildly popular as 'punk rock' acts in the 90's, they didn't represent the underground genre. Slayer recorded an album of punk covers in 1996 called 'Undisputed attitude" cos (late guitarist) Jeff Hanneman was a big fan of SoCal punk rock in the 80's, and he was like, "THIS is real punk rock! That shopping mall crap ain't punk!"

As a huge punk rock fan, not necessarily a Pennywise fan, but do love many of their stuff. This song and the video is soooo fucking good because it's so real and in your face. It makes you either think or look away and for me there's nothing more punk rock than that
Great music is subversive, from rag time, to blues, to jazz, to folk, to hip hop, to punk. Subversive music is usually suppressed by authority, then co-opted, repackaged, watered down, resold in an inoffensive that maintains those in power. Either by the subject matter of the music itself in distracting or subduing the masses, or by editorial power of the music industry deciding who can and cannot get ahead, often times both. It's like politics and it suffers the same fate.
This is one of my fav songs. Peaceful day album is my fav. Sorry I'm drunk and blanking on the album name. I grew up in CA and had to drive an hour to where they were playing in the ealry 90s. Last time I saw them was in Anaheim
Love the fact that you point out the importance of the lyrical side on the older and more serious punk bands such as pennywise and dead kennedys etc. but I think some of the "punk" bands that came from 90-00 such as green day or blink-182 had another important role making that energetic and stupid --- having fun kind of music! Its important to be conscious about things that happen and matter us all through the globe but on the other hand you need to enjoy and learn about the simple things in your personal and social life growing up! I think the same goes with whats happened with rap. Also both of the genres have had several fun and meaningless songs (talking lyrics) throughout the history, maybe to catch some people from outside the scene or just simply having fun or being young etc. Some of them really know how to write stuff that sounds like a daily base talking with some good points in them. Anyway LOVING your content and the points you make!
The singer from Circle Jerks once said that Punk Rock was meant to be born yell at the world with a middle finger then burn out. Everything else may be considered an omage or rememberance of true Punk
Punk seemed to start as a place where young people were frustrated and angry and didn’t feel like society was made for them, kind of like now with Gen Z. I used to watch a lot of shows about punk and music history. Apparently punk originally was influenced by reggae. It’s extremely sad that it is still relevant. And society itself has become a place where we are shamed for thinking or feeling anything bad. “Stop bringing people down” “cheer up” “don’t be sad” Why is it bad to feel negative things?

Glad to see this guy getting why us old farts have a lot of disdain for what punk rock devolved into by the time it became another marketing trend in the 90's. I cringe anytime I hear the old songs on a corporate commercial! Not all of the commercially viable stuff is entirely without merit however. Bad Religion for example started in California in the early days of the SoCal punk scene. While I don't particularly care for the sound of their MTV era albums, I get that they were trying to bring the same message they always had to a wider audience.
It’s so funny you mentioned rap music in the 80s, I used to listen to rap music until they began to talk about girls, money and void topics that made no sense anymore and in 94 I discovered punk rock… and never left it since. I still almost exclusively listen to punk rock, a bit of metal and, whenever there’s an interesting hip hop artist with a message to deliver… I still go back to some of the greatest but it’s silly how the people’s music turned into “Gucci, b*tches and drugs”. Nice to hear someone who acknowledges rap was about social issues.
True punk is unfiltered. It's anger at what is around us, and fighting back using music. This was one of my favorite songs way back. Rise Against is not full on punk, but they are one of the more recent bands that I respect because they just say what they feel as well. I always hated when people called stuff like "Green Day" punk, everyone saying they listened to punk rock back in the day, and would put on Green Day, lol. That's pop, not punk.

Thank you for seeing punk in it's truest form and making the connection with old rap it's truth a message and has been watered down same as hip hop and rap same shit going on but to many distractions to see real issues until its to late I like the open mind and different points of view 💯
I’ve been listening to PW for over 30 years and this is the first time seeing the video for Society. Love it. Great reaction! Check out Propagandhi. Very politically charged
Been saying it forever brutha.. you are spot on. There is only punk and there is only pop. But punk is always alive. It's not just music. It's a way of thinking about life. Love the reaction.
Yes please dive deeper. i would start with bands like MC5, New York dolls followed by The Deadboys, TV and some of the early British punk bands. The Damned, Buzzcocks, Gen x( Billy Idols first band) The Clash. love what your saying and feeling. Real Punk was a movement not just music. It spoke of all the things all other music was afraid to speak about. You can see why authorities did everything possible to portray to the public how Punk Rockers were the scum of earth and trouble makers.
Your comment that new punk rock isn't the same as "old" punk rock is untrue. The thing is that, yes there are terrible "punk" bands such as blink182. But, actual punk went semi-underground in the early 90's and has yet to really reappear. But, it's gaining traction again. Bands like "get dead", "bad cop, bad cop", and even "dropkick murphys" are still putting out actual punk rock. It's not boy bands with hot topic fashion.
Extremely insightful take on punk rock as a whole. I love how you touched on the problem with punk being watered down into something that is about as punk rock as a Sunday afternoon at the mall. There definitely is still good punk rock being made today, it just takes some seeking out. On a side note, one of my favorite punk bands, Circle Jerks, is touring with 7 Seconds and Negative Approach this summer, and those MFers are in their 60s. Anyhow, great video!
pennywise is the most down to earth band of all time. I've partied with them after many shows, and they just roll to the bar and kick back. never once do they name drop or act better than anyone. I met them at the Pomona Fairplex and said we were going to a bar down the street after the show if they wanna go, and they said ok. then they showed up and just hung out. very well known band in southern California and they acted like any random joe Schmoe. I'm a dude btw... it's now like they were chasing tail.
You hit the nail on the head with this reaction. Old punk don't care, they have a message and do not care if they offend. lol More punk please.
I love this era in punk. I grew up to it and it just never failed to inspire.
We can do better than this, people just don't want to.

Thank you for seeing punk in it's truest form and making the connection with old rap it's truth a message and has been watered down same as hip hop and rap same shit going on but to many distractions to see real issues until its to late I like the open mind and different points of view 💯
Excellent break down dude, keep it up.
This is what a lot of Gen x grew up on! There's nothing negative about the music it just get you excited for your own cause.
I’ve been listening to PW for over 30 years and this is the first time seeing the video for Society. Love it. Great reaction! Check out Propagandhi. Very politically charged
These guys still tour and still kick ass live you should go to a show.
Awesome reaction to a killer band........ definitely check out more from pennywise you won’t be disappointed
Did you ever do the lyrical breakdown? I don't know how I stumbled upon this, but your reaction was awesome and so spot on.
Just found your channel and subscribed for the punk rock. You got it. That's why I fell in love with punk.
Early pennywise is fantastic.
One of my favorite bands
PENNYWISE!!! one of my all time favorite bands been listening to them since i was 13 seen them numerous times
Pennywise got their name from Pennywise the clown
Love this band and all of your comments were spot on.
First band I ever seen live!!!!
I really like the way you react to the songs, video and lyrics. You should take a look at Bad Religion's Sinister Rouge.Lyrics are just f*in crazy!!
