This was her first major hit, and ironically it was written in response to the record industry and radio largely ignoring her because she didn’t fit into the stereotype of a “pretty”, pouting female artist. Since then she’s become one of Australia’s most successful and lauded country music artists, with a string of awards to her name.
Kasey goes beyond country, if she thinks the genre doesn't suit her purposes in a particular song. That's one of the things we love about her. She is not afraid of boundaries. 😊
I have tried to find and listen to all her music. I have not been disappointed. She is such an incredible talent and is also an ARIA Hall of Fame member (Australia Recording Industry Association). Thanks for sharing and looking forward to the next as usual. My favorite of hers is probably The Captain, other than the Lose Yourself cover lol. Cya on the next one neighbor.
Kasey comes from an interesting family who spent part of the year in the outback (with her parents shooting foxes and rabbits) and the rest in a small fishing town. They had a family band, the Dead Ringer Band, who very very popular, firstly locally in South Australia, then in New South Wales. I taught Kasey and her brother Nash in high school in 1990.
Kasey went from singing "the captain" to and very different "ain't no little girl" it's a wonderful talent, her writing it so real, thanks for the reaction
Another outstanding Australian singer songwriter you might like to checkout is Paul Kelly. He’s an Aussie icon and sometimes referred to as the Australian Bob Dylan (though I don’t generally like making comparisons like that). Songs to listen to include To Her Door, Dumb Things, and How to Make Gravy (the last one is a Christmas staple, and best to watch a live performance).
Please do Barricades And Brickwalls and Rattlin Bones, both by Kasey...Thanks for doing this❤...She had a difficult time making it here in the U.S., because alot of the radio stations at the time were not playing her music...
You should listen to her song "Talkin Baby Blues" in which she tells her life story. This song gets a mention as does "The Captain" which was featured in the Tv show the Sopranos.
Glad you enjoyed it, Red..she has an extensive catalogue. She should be more well known, but the US is a difficult market. Of course guys check themselves out in the bathroom...hahahahahhaha Have a good weekend...and thank you for your amazing smile!
I did enjoy it. People would love her here if we had more opportunity to be exposed to her. Crazy record label politics. I like thinking about y’all looking in the mirror. It’s cute. 💕
There is absolutely a music culture in Australia. I would suggest Men At Work particularly "Land Down Under" and Midnight Oil, especially "Dead Heart", "Beds Are Burning" and "Forgotten Years". There is Nick Cave of course, both solo and as part of The Birthday Party though "Into My Arms" and "Ship Song" are stand outs and, speaking of the Birthday Party, Rowland S. Howard is amazing, "Shivers" is a classic and I have a personal attachment to "Dead Radio." For something a bit lighter Courtney Barnett and Kylie Minogue fun. On the heavier side there is always AC/DC, Silverchair, Mortal Sin and Daemon Pyre. For Hip-Hop there is Hilltop Hoods, Bliss n Eso and Thudamentals.
@@redheadedneighbor Yes with her brother not many good quality video's of her performing that. Story is it's one of their favourite jamb session songs.
The rabbit hole of Aussie music is rather deep .Many great artists . Try Do Re Me "man overboard " , anything from the Divinyls , Vicka and Linda Bull , Paul Kelly or the Black Sorrows , you wont be disapointed .
@@redheadedneighbor For the Black Sorrows, try the song Chained to the Wheel for starters. Also, Vicka and Linda Bull were part of The Black Sorrows, so you’ll get a taste of them at the same time. In fact, the Bull sisters have also performed with Paul Kelly on occasion as well.
Hello! I was a teenager in the 80's so admit to a lean toward pop which I would also like to point out, is balanced by an inherent appreciation of rock and metal. Anyway, I do like Pop and I keep seeing people reacting to Not Pretty Enough. In terms of Kasey, I MUCH prefer Like a River. Both were very successful commercial singles, but I think Like a River was the better received of the two. Try, Like a River, Lovely neighbor. Definite pop country vibe but its really good. I believe you also will prefer it. xo.
UA-cam up to its old tricks again of not sending me alerts to new content, how annoying I missed this till now. A wonderfully simple song that can have so many meanings for different people. As others have said Kasey having not fit into the stereotypical industry money making image penned this song. I think it resonated with people for just that reason, not fitting in for whatever reason be it beauty ideals, beliefs, interests so many reasons. I am glad this song and artist are resonating with you. Definitely as I have seen in the comments Paul Kelly specifically - To Her Door, or The Black Sorrows - Harley & Rose are great listens as well. 😀
Thank you so much for these suggestions! And yes, I do believe the main point was to the industry and the video gave it a soft filter. So wonderful. Either way, powerful.
What a great song and a great video!! Look forward to hearing more from her when you get to them. I guess we all do look in the mirror when we're out. Got to make sure you don't have a loo roll tail after all 😂 I don't remember feeling under too much pressure when I was a teenager to measure up to others. I was very shy but I was also very laid back too and I've never been a follower of a crowd, I think I actually get a kick out of not following! Which is probably mostly the reason I didn't have any social media either.
Fantastic song, Kasey is a legend in Australia. Yes guys will 'fix' themselves in the mirror...but in the 90s only if alone but these days the youngies would fix their look in a puddle if they the chance.
