We love the entire route and sometimes have spent as much as a week traveling through. That's because there are so many places to stop and explore.Everybody knows about places like Sturgis, Deadwood, the Black Hills, Mt. Rushmore. But the five we picked to show you in this video are among our very favorite places to stop anywhere in North America.
Some are very touristy. That's okay. They are all great spots to take a break from the road, be refreshed, walk around a bit, learn things and have a lot of fun.
We hope you enjoy this video as much as we did in making it!
Wanna know our favorite spots mentioned in the video? Here they are:
#1 WALL DRUG, EXIT 109
#2 BADLANDS NATIONAL PARK, EXIT 110
#3 1880 TOWN, Exit 170
#4 AL'S OASIS, Exit 260
#5 THE INGALLS FAMILY HOMESTEAD, DESMET, SD, EXIT 330
Now watch the video to learn all about them....

Back in 2008 my wife and I took that trip from Wisconsin to South Dakota on our motorcycles the week after Sturgis was over we had a ball... Wall Drug was amazing their ice cream is out of this world that's for sure.. ..
Thanks for an awesome video I really enjoyed watching it..
Thank you for sharing! Awesome finds
My wife and I have just returned from S.Dakota on the 26 July17, We stopped at all of them except Al's. I discovered the carriage in the 1880 town that was made for Dupont Powder Works Keokuk, Ia. This is our hometown. We also stopped at the Pioneer car museum and it was worth the stop. Anyway thanks for sharing! Andy and Christine.
Don't forget the Dignity Statue at the rest area in Chamberlain, SD. They also have a Lewis and Clark Museum in the rest area.
Awesome video!! very professional! Very inspiring to new youtube travelers!
Love to see you again both happy and safe. Thank you for sharing.
Loved it I’m in UK and been thinking about doing a drive across SD and visiting deadwood , I loved you video thanks.
I plan on driving across SD to Mt Rushmore. This info is very helpful. Thanks!
Had no idea there was so much to see there! Such fun. It’s definitely on my list of things to do!
Hi, We LOVED your UA-cam video about I-90!! We are planning our own RV trip out west this summer. We loved your I-90 video so much, we would like to link the video to our viewers! We would also like to use a screen shot of the thumbnail so the viewers know exactly what video we are referencing. We thought the information was very helpful and just want to spread the word. Your videos are so professional! Thank you so much for producing them.
Thanks,
Haley Family
Headed that way in October will definitely keep all these places on our list👍 thanks for the video.
Love SD ride from Alabama to Sturgis SD fro bike week every AUG. You are right it is a unique and beautiful part of our country that many never has the time to visit and understand how the area developed over the years!!! Thank you for your clip. I have done every stop except the little house on P but I will do this on the way out in Aug 18
This was such an incredible video. Thank you so much for providing this information to the public. I am planning a roadtrip from NJ to SD with my cousin and grandpa. I was looking for JUST THIS exact information to make our ride exciting. Thank you so much!
Thank you for the great video, very informative.
My wife and I drove from Washington to Vermont and back again a few years back, and the Ingalls Homestead in DeSmet SD was one of our favorites, as we too took turns reading the Little House books aloud on our trip. We stayed in one of their covered wagons, and they don’t mind if you go exploring at night when you’re staying there.
If you’re a fan of the series, another place to see (though not in SD) is where their dugout house used to be on the banks of Plum Creek just north of Walnut Grove, MN. 👍
Thanks! I don't think it's boring either.
I wrote all of them down on my To Do Camping List.
My Mom hung out her clothes, too! In fact, I remember helping!
One of our favorite drives. I think we've hit DeSmet at least three times from Oregon here. Also check out the Lakota Museum in Chamberlin and the old mission and school there. Fantastic history
Thank you. Been to Wall Drug but not the other places. Now we shall make a special trip north to do that sometime.
We are putting together our list of places we will go next summer. South Dakota is on that list. We have been to the badlands about 10 years ago but that was just passing through on the way to mt Rushmore
You're video are wonderful and informative and entertaining. Keep up the great work. Terr and Lucy
After more than a year, I finally took this video off Watch Later.
EDIT- 8:41 P.M.: *finishes video 14 minutes later*
I didn't think that it was possible but you guys made me care about South Dakota. I want to go there someday. 😀
Wow!! Yall completely forgot about the worlds only corn palace here in Mitchell South Dakota. Not to mention the black hills all together.
Just so people know, the town of De Smet is about 60 miles north of I-90.Will you be doing a video on the Black Hills of South Dakota which are also on I-90? There are about 100 places in the Black Hills that are just as interesting as the ones you show here, in my opinion.
We've reported on the Black Hills before (roadtreking.com/a-study-in-contrast-from-the-badlands-to-the-black-hills/) as well as Deadwood (roadtreking.com/rv-sidetrip-deadwood-sd/) Mt. Rushmore and other area attractions (roadtreking.com/the-open-mike-rv-tour-west-the-black-hills-are-turning-red/) ...but, as you say, there's a lot there and some will be very interesting as future stand alone videos. In this one, we intentionally picked some quick stop places that can be a lot of fun and offer a break from the interstate.
Thanks guys!
You missed the MinuteMan missile Museum at the same exit as the Badlands East (I-90 x 132 I believe).. You get to tour an actual MinuteMan Missile site, including going down into the control room (The room at the very beginning of the Movie War games).
Just went last weekend. It was awesome and the museum the next exit down was probably one of the best National Parks Museums I've ever been to. Not to be missed!
We've hit each of these places multiple times, except the one I *really* want to see: DeSmet and the little house. One day, we'll be making DeSmet a destination. :)
Thank you. Very good suggestions.
Grizzlies steakhouse, La Cross , Wisconsin
Thank You!!
Great Video
What?????? No Corn Palace???? A must stop!!!
It was in the finalists! I may do a stand alone video on it. I have a lot of video I shot there. But we reported on it a few years back so we decided to hold it for another day
one of a kind video
you forgot about Wounded Knee
Try hot springs sd
Near Nebraska border go though black hills
Desmet isnt along I90..its a quite a few miles off the hiway
Would 3 hours in De Smet be enough to see all the Ingalls landmarks?
Yes but that's about the minimum. There's some walking to do on the homestead. Not much to see in town except the house they wintered in.
Is I90 a toll road thru SD?
No, it's an Interstate in SD
Jean Decker nope, I-90 from Washington to just east of Chicago is all freeway.
From Chicago east to Boston it is about 75% tollway sadly.
Wow, many thanks for sharing this. All the best
