    Irons spells and spell books is actually very fitting with vanilla themed Minecraft mods! Its spells are based on Minecraft attacks you may already see in Minecraft! They are my go-to magic mods on my mod packs when it comes to Minecraft magic, Ars Nouveau is also cool, but doesn’t fully capture Minecraft’s style.

      This! Irons spells, is designes to follow vanilla progression, and you can also use gated questbook stuff to lock certain levels or tiers of spells if you dont want someone pikcing up a legendary 5th level smite or something haha.

    Spells & Shields is a neat one. From what I remember it adds the ability for enchantment tables to give you spells that you buy with XP. Some require items in order to use, for example a pufferfish for a water breathing spell. There is a tree system, where you need to unlock lower level spells in a catagory, before you can unlock higher level ones. Overall its a good magic mod, maybe a bit simple and small, but overall good.

    I’m really fond of “schools of magic: second semester”. It hasn’t been updated for a few versions, but its spells are very Minecrafty and it’s the only mod I’ve seen that uses a dnd inspired spell slot system. As suggested by the name, it’s actually an in progress remake of an older mod with balance changes. Would love to see it get more support because it looks very unique while still being relatively grounded (at least in comparison to the anime magic or particle effect hell mods).

  • @ripzaurus

    It doesn't scream Magic, but I recommend the mod "Apotheosis". It adds enchantments, potions and adds to the potion aspect of Minecraft, improves the enchanting table with special bookshelves, has magic gems that add buffs to armor and tools and stuff.
    And that's nowhere near everything. It's a really good mod that you should consider checking :D yeah it doesn't add spells, but it makes the vanilla Minecraft magic more fleshed out.

    I've always felt that Minecraft always took the Tolkien approach to magic. Yes, magic exists, but mainly in the form of magical items like enchanted equipment and potions. Any magic outside of that could be seen as evil or at least used by people with ill intentions. I think more magical items could be cool, like the Totem of Undying. Magic as more utility-based rather than anything outwardly physical.

  • @adamjeviczki3175
    @adamjeviczki3175 23 дні тому +7

    The problem with this respect is that magic mods that are vanilla style usually aren't considered magic mods. For example, extra utilities two is probably the most vanilla style mod, and has it's own magic system, without feeling out of place.
    The really popular magic mods, like thaumcraft, bloodmagic or botania basically work like tech mods, so expecting them to be vanilla style is a veryy strange expectation

    • @Kahadi
      @Kahadi 15 днів тому

      This is probably the best explanation of the issue. The more vanilla-style magic mods aren't considered magic mods, they're usually considered vanilla+ mods or utilities or enhancers. They rarely come with just magic. Apotheosis has some stuff with the improvements to enchanting, allurement adds more enchantments, Void Totem is self explanatory. Actually, a lot of mods add new enchantments and potions, which is pretty much all there is for vanilla magic, aside from the evoker, which is drastically different from anything else in Minecraft and actually doesn't feel out of place among some of the mods he's saying don't fit like Ars Magicka or Ars Nouveau.

    Minecraft is a block game. All spells should be spell blocks that have effects when placed. A fireball block. A block that lures enemies. A block that summons lightning. A block that turns surrounding blocks corrupted. A block that converts enemies. Then you can make it so the blocks aren’t stackable so you have to constantly craft them for an effective mage build.

    I fully agree, I've been in the modding community for ages and its infuriating because most of the magic mods that DO exist completely trump any other mods in terms of scale/power or just completely break the balance of the game (which IS cool in it's own right, but it creates the issue of there being no good reason to focus on anything other than the mod if you want to get stuff which just doesn't feel good)

There are a few things that don't feel minecrafty, but almost all the spells either already exist (evoker fangs, for example) or stuff like summoning fireballs or wither skulls. I’ve been working on a fully fleshed out idea for a Minecraft magic mod, but lack the knowledge to code it. It’s a big priority for me to make once I learn how to code
    Kind of like in Skyrim, there would be magic staffs that use charge. By putting a potion on two sticks you could cast a spell of that effect. Regular potion for a beam, splash for aoe and lingering for lingering aoe.
    Then there would be books made from alligator hide, a new mob. These books can be put in an enchanting table to create a spell book. At first, you have to open the book and read the spell, but after mastering it, you just have to hold the book. These spells would include fire, ice, a leaping spell, and a charm spell.
    The charm spell has the most function, passifying mobs. The charm spell can be used to learn ‘party trick’ spells. When charming the correct mob, they will share knowledge with you to unlock the new spells in the enchanter.
    The evoked will teach you a spell to convert sheep colors, as is done in game.
    The parrot, because owls were seen as wise, will give you a spell to cast fireworks on demand.
    The dolphin will give you a spell to convert any item temporarily into a raw cod. (Cannot be cooked)
    This is inspired by alchemy myths of turning coal into gold

Tons of shapes, effects, modifiers that can be mixed and matched with each other, a nice progression system that involves a lot of small steps that you'd either do anyway in a minecraft world (reaching the stronghold, finding a fortress, ect.) or nudging you to interact with its systems. Constructs to automate things like farming, a new way to echant things and the way you craft spells is simple yet always satisfying!

    Hear me out, if anyone is planning to make a magic mod, do it something like this.
    The player has a Tab for Magic (like achievements) or an inventory bar, and can equip 3-9 spells at a time. The player also needs to find rare Items to craft Scrolls. the stronger the spell, the Harder the recipe.
    Once you have a spell, you need a Certain amount of Experience and a few more ingredients to make it more Powerful or add upgrades to it.

    • @Red_04
      @Red_04 8 днів тому

      This is pretty much how Mana and Artifice does it, minus the magic tab thing. You can use a Spellbook or Grimoire to store and cast spells, and while you can just cast using the spell item, it tends to clutter your inventory so it's not recommended.
      Although, rather than just learning spells, you have to learn how to make the components to create your own.

    If I could make a mod that I would actually update it would be a mod that adds staffs made of the non-weapon used materials (copper, amethyst, emerald, echo shard, lapis) that would use the already existing enchantment books to add unique attacks. For example if you hold a thorns book in your off hand and a staff in your main hand and right click thorns would appear out of the ground for a short time causing lingering damage to those in the area. Alternatively someone could use a blast protection book to create a shield around the player, or use a swift sneak book to give the player speed two for 20 seconds. Each book would have a cooldown for the effect it gives, as well as the amount of uses it has left shown with the durability meter. Each staff would simply have more durability (each book use cost’s durability on the book and the staff) and also make the books more powerful. The way that the books would be used is designed to have the player keep a book in their off hand for quick use and have a sword or axe for quick switching after using the staff. Each book wouldn’t just be for offense but also for defense or as ways to activate potion effects. There could even be cloaks that give less protection than chest plates but give less of a cooldown on each book.

    For larger vanilla-esque magic mods (besides the amazing Iron’s Spells and Spellbooks), I recommend Goety. It’s a more recent and lesser known mod whose creator derives inspiration from vanilla Minecraft and Minecraft Dungeons to make a darker-themed magic experience for version 1.20. I believe it also interacts with villager reputation, and using dark magic near them makes them lose trust in you. For smaller additions, I recommend Biome Makeover, which has two very small additions to vanilla magic. One of these is in the form of an Altar for upgrading enchanted gear in exchange for risking new curses. The other is a Witches’ Hat, and interacting with a Witch while wearing it allows for trading requested items for unobtainable potions. Alex’s Mobs adds a very small additional workbench for the late-game, allowing for the duplication of randomly-chosen items for a price.

    My favorite magic mod, especially for packs like this, is hex casting. It feels very vanilla but gives you more freedom than any other magic mod I have seen. It is a magic mod that uses simplified code condensed as runes to write spells. Along with this, it is very vanilla in the way that it takes learning and always costs something in return specificly amethyst which is a good use of a normally under used resource.
