Very glad we in the EU have these multi-lingual (she's German) and extremely intelligent negotiators. Look at how conversational, witty and at ease someone can be, talking about such complex issues. Please do more interviews Sabine!

Paul Victor I don’t trust the Germans. At all. She looks like she would be a dictator in the future. She is saying what by how much Theresa May was defeated but she is not saying about how the Referendum was won by over a million votes. Some people are very good talkers so do not let that fool you. She obviously is only saying what she have already heard the the heads of have already said. It is not hard to repeat what has already been said. EU this was disgust ling time ago. The back stop wS Orchestrated to keep Britain side the Customer Union. We already know that. The N Ireland Varadkar was laid two years ago to go along with the Orchestrated backstop to keep Britain in a straight Jacket in the Customs Union. Some people are too thick and blond to see what have been happening. None if this is true. There is no need for a hard border. This is the EU putting obstacles in the way of Britain leaving the EU. They are terrified of Britain trading better than them as we used to be the best in Europe. They even coned Member States by giving all their powers and Laws over to the German run EU. Then the coned them into handing over their Army’s what stupid fools. And Theresa May is useless. Now all Member States are sitting duck with no defense because they are under German control. They have no defense if Germany is commanding and controlling all the Army’s from Member States. No solder will be able to refuse a German order or they will be in prisoned or shot. This was Hitlers dream that he was talking about before WW2 ended. Angela Merkel done it different from Hitler. She spin her evil web and invited European countries into her web of evil destruction by using the Euro too. Taking Member States Sovereignty away. Taking all their Laws away. Taking their House Of Commons away witch would end up as nothing.

That's the biggest mystery in all of this - at least to me... Brexiteers claim they would be better off without the EU and could negotiate better deals on their own - and at the same time they claim the EU has pulled a fast one on the UK. What is it, lads? Are you or are you not better at negotiations than the EU? Can't be both...

@me hee Well, yes... obviously there are threats that the UK could make that would bring the EU back to the table and open the negotiations back up. For example, I can't imagine the 27 standing firm together if the UK would threaten to share secret information gained from the cooperating secret services over the last decades with foreign nations like Russia or China. However, the UK needs to be prepared for the backlash. If the UK "pushes hard enough" (as you put it), simple physics will tell us that there is an equal and opposite force to push back on the UK.
The EU has time and time again, almost stunningly unanimous, repeated their steady opinion to NOT change the deal that was reached between all 28 members during a long and hard negotation process. It is absolutely clear, that it would be vehemently AGAINST the wishes of the 27 remaining members to even talk about anything, let alone change any part of the legally binding bits of the agreement. So if they are forced to do it by some force from the UK, the UK can expect their friendly standing with the 27 EU members and the EU itself to rapidly deteriorate...

A grown up speaks about the EU-UK negotiations. Our government was outclassed.
It's not even about outclassing. At least from the EU perspective. As she said the EU wants the closest relationship with the UK as possible (therefore mostly limited by the UK's wishes to distance itself from the EU and demands not balanced by any reasonable offers). To me, at least, it seems this was never a fight between the EU and the UK. It's an internal fight within the UK.
Take the backstop. It makes sense for the EU to back the Republic in its desire for a soft border with Northern Ireland. The UK could of course have fought for a hard border. Even if they did the negotiators didn't end up with that. Whatever shape the soft border takes - the backstop is really more of a safety measure in case the two parties fail to make a deal (a deal which would have to include some sort of non-hard border in Ireland, I assume).
It very much feels to me that while, yes, there are differences of opinion and preferences but that the EU has been looking to actually make a deal whereas the UK hasn't (been able to), mainly because of internal politics. And yes, as someone from elsewhere in the EU I would favour the UK remaining but the last months I have mosly been thinking that Westminster has severe issues getting on track. Stay or leave, you choose but c'mon.

As an Irish citizen, I would like to express my profound gratitude to Ms Sabine Weyand for her level-headedness, professionalism, and massive competence.
Every time she, or M. Michel Barnier, make a public statement, it validates our EU membership.
She is a great example of commonsense, education and raw trained intelligence. A modern European.
And every time I see a British MP being interviewed it validates the war of independence
As a half-Irish German I really wish you guys all the very best from my heart. You've been putting up with British plundering for centuries and it's time it finished. The "Spiegel" this week (Issue 5/2019) includes a heartfelt leader from Markus Feldenkirchen that Ireland should have a referendum for reunification. The British have historically screwed up their chances for holding on to Ulster. Get rid of them.
yes indeed it was explained to us all very clearly ........they could have put a tv above the speakers chair in the commons got him to order for the doors to be shut..... and the mps then called to order , and have them sit and listen and learn ...... he would have to pause no doubt a few times to restore order .....it would have done them no harm to be educated ... just a bit !!!!
Mr Barnier stated that the Backstop was a Red Herring created by the EU to stop the UK leaving the EU.
Compare this clear headed analysis and full grip on the facts with any UK politician or bureaucrats opining various fantasies.

I second that. EU officials have not often volunteered commentary on the Brexit mess, but when they do, they know what they are talking about. The UK side seems unable to stop asking for what has been ruled out, as if they can get it by dint of persistence. Looks like they are playing it like a game of chicken.

Opinion from South of Equator: The perceived difference between EU negotiators and their UK counterparts is that first ones have profound technical knowledge about the ground they are moving on. While in the UK those who are in charge of negotiations have just prestige. They do not really know about what they are talking about, they barely scratch the surface of the underlying problems. In fact it should be recognized that the UK has indeed a few serious human resources to advise the negotiations with the EU (Sir Ivan Rogers, Dr. Richard North, etc) but they are continually and completely ignored by those who have prestige, power and most of the media which prioritizes easygoing biff bam politics. It seems quite clear that most of those in charge of negotiations on the UK side, including MPs, have learned almost nothing about the Brexit complexities since the referendum in 2016. So in the middle of the huge mess they’ve created for themselves, each is defending its own interest, within its own agenda. There is no real national interest at stake for them. Closing perception: while the EU considers Brexit as being the art of adjusting rights and obligations so not to jeopardize internal EU and international commerce, the UK still plays all this as it were a poker game, hoping to win by having the EU blinking first at the last minute of the eleventh hour.

I believe I'm educated enough in British politics considering that I'm not from there, but whatever, I can't even single out why you would believe I needed more education given my comment above does not state any falsehoods. Sure it might be a bit over the top and oversimplified, but keep in mind this is a UA-cam comment section, not a scientific discussion.

This lady, Sabine Weyand is so charming and frankly quite a refreshment after getting used to politicians talking a lot but saying nothing. She's so well spoken but she doesn’t sugar coat. If only she’d appeared a lot earlier. Btw, I’m utterly appalled by people that didn’t bother to listen to what she said, but instead try to have fun with her clothing style. Why aren't British politicians as articulate and coherent as she is when it comes to either what they have in front of them or, especially, what they want? Surely graduates of private schools and Oxbridge know better than snotty comments and dumb trumpian slogans...

She is a technocrat, not a politician: that gives her the ability to be frank, clear, and thorough. This is a luxury not afforded to elected politicians, be they from Westminster or from elsewhere..

That paper you linked is a very basic look at the concept and certainly not a detailed plan of action. Also I'm no expert, but it seems to me like it would still violate the good friday agreement. That's less of a problem for the EU than it is a problem for the UK. Which is probably why the backstop was the idea of the UK government...

Greece overspent on public jobs without an end of the bag!! Say should be happy that EU backed them and gave them money to survive. Everybody told Greece that they spend too much and no one wanted to hear it! So in my opinion the EU shouldn’t have given them any damn cent! Take this back to events like the reformation and there would have been blood running in the streets, thousands upon thousands slaughtered or enslaved. Now all we do is make rude comments on youtube or twitter and occasionally march at the weekend with placards and silly pink hats that look like fannies. so really, we've come a long way baby!
I have scratched my head wondering how on earth UK could, after two years, have ended up in the situation they are now with people screaming "this is not what I was told leave would mean, I have changed my mind and wasn't a new chance to say what I want", "leave means leave!", "brexit means brexit!", "we can't support the Prime Ministers deal", "we must support the Prime Ministers deal", "we must leave without a deal"... with a few months until D-day.
Then I read comments like the ones on this video and it all becomes a bit clearer. For a vast majority of those who comment like this Brexit was never a rational, logical fact-based decision. It was the real-life equivalent of writing angry non-coherent and off-the-point comments on YouTUbe videos.

That's because she actually studied what she's doing. Most politicians aren't even academics anymore, let alone professionals in whatever field they claim to be an expert in. Even the traditional "career politian" (which back in the days meant that you studied law and had a passion for debates, making you at least an expert in how to write a law if not on the topic itself) is going extinct.
One side is talking with fact, other side is just shouting - no deal, deal, order, election and blah blah blah! Lol
Oh yes, but I do enjoy it when the children get boisterous close to their nap time, and the speaker of the creche shouts Orderrrrrr, orderrrrrr... bums down, legs crossed, fingers on lips!
I find their antics a handy distraction that keeps me from looking out of the window as the whole jolly school-bus drives off the cliff : )
Be thankful that nobody on this side of the channel has yet resorted to speaking facts and being sensible... the last thing we want is a panic.
One thing I would add to everybody praising Sabine and criticizing her UK counterparts - UK had a very intelligent and level headed negotiator in the person of Sir Ivan Rodgers who can be seen in the background when the camera pans away. The problem was he resigned because none of his messages of reason and common sense were landing with the British government.

Totally agree - that statement was shocking to me! She states that the UK was driving the negotiation from their end, and the EU effectively agreed to May's demands. Since May's deal was overwhelmingly defeated by the house of commons, PM May and the government, according to this negotiator's statements, have mis-characterized the negotiations as being driven by the EU, and forcing this on the UK as the only deal possible.
It's because the UK is constantly being fed lies about how the evil EU is purposely screwing us and holding us hostage to their demands.
Not necessarily: The PM may have instructed them to get a backstop, despite what they personally would prefer.
Again very conflicting reports here, on the one hand it has been stated that the EU helped PM May to draft her plan, and yet here we have the statement that it was our own government that wanted the backstop, i cannot comment as to which is true or accurate, but it is clear that someone is wrong and other agendas are being followed than the ones that should be at the top of the list, the British voters did not ask for or want any deals or backstops until after we had left the EU, and should not have to take responsibility for this problem, i would be the first to admit that Mays handling of Brexit has been very bad, she has in effect being trying to serve more than one master, something a PM should never even consider let alone do, but this to be fair has been at least some insistence of the EU, maybe if this lady had been in charge of negotiations instead of Mr Barnier who did not want to compromise in anyway, preferring to peacock how strong he could be at punishing the UK, Mr Tusk making snide and unprofessional comments online about cherrys, Mr Junker smiling to Mrs Mays face whilst going onto back stab her in the most ignorant and undignified manner a politician possibley could, and Mr Verhofstat jumping up and down in a petulant hissy fit ranting away like a demented little Goebbles demanding everyone's sovereignty and proclaiming the might if the NEW empire that can not be stopped by anyone, things might have been much smoother, we all know in our hearts that the UK will be trading with the EU and vice verse, what we have seen is a rather silly emotional response from the French and Belgium poloticians, who like to call the British names and accuse us of all the sins of the world since time immemorial, here we see the German approach, calm, level headed, unemotional, efficient, we may not agree on all things but the UK can deal with them as we share common ground on these points at least, the UK i admit needs desperately to reboot its political system as it has been corrupted since the time of Blair and further still joining the EEC, had the EEC remained as was originally sold to the British public we would not be having any of these problems and nor would any of the problems the rest if the EU exist, different ones maybe, but not these problems and they would not have been as complicated or divisive.

- The Brits seem plenty concerned about the troubles, and their obligations under the good Friday agreement, they have stated that they will not install a hard border, they only want "technology checks" (i.e ANPR type systems looking at who is crossing the border.) they want "inland" inspection miles from the border. (the reality of that is probably something looking like a huge warehouse somewhere in/near Belfast where goods can be inspected whether they arrive by road/rail/air or sea.)
The Irish seem quite committed to not having a border on land. - or at least it would be politically suicidal to suggest that there should be a border on the island!

both countries also seem aware that Irish have been able to live and work in the UK since 1949 (quite a while before the EU existed.)
any reading of history will tell you that the border security was quite lapse until the troubles really got going, where terrorist were using the border to flee to a safe space after doing what they did.

The UK wants to just look at what lorries are going into / out of, so they can see patterns, and attempt to catch smugglers like this,
The UK appears quite happy to operate a trust based land border with no mandatory physical checks.
-given that the UK is made of basically fishing islands with sea going boats that can (and do) travel the world, and return back unchecked, this doesn't seems that unusual, (there is no customs office in Mousehole...) - in case you argue customs would be pointless in a fishing village.. another example, Fowey is an international export harbor, capable of receiving 17,000 ton 200 meter ships... there is no regular customs officer there. - and the government of the UK seems happy to control its only land border in the same fashion.
there is no need to stop "Irish" people living or working in the UK as they have been able to do this since 1949, or, since forever excluding 187 years between 1922 - 1949
In short, the UK appears to accept this "possibly permeable" border as a small price to pay for peace in Ireland.
The EU (not Ireland) say that they will insist on a border... simple/technology based checks etc are not enough...
this (the fact that the EU insists on frontier borders.) leaves only a few solutions, one of which is:
NI alone stays in the customs union and has different laws and regulations to the UK. "hard border" is moved to the sea. (this is what the "backstop" does)
So it is reasonably easy to see how and why the back stop is unpopular (and plays into the hands of the "no sovereignty" claims) the "deal" is that if the UK and EU have not worked out an agreement in 2 years, Northern Ireland falls under EU goods controls and laws and there is an international border between Britain and Northern Ireland.
You can imagine that this is about as popular as if the UK said no border, instead Ireland must be committed to following import laws of the UK and have customs checks at ports with the EU. and it amounts to the same. laws of a country, or a part of a country being set by someone/something that should not control them.
At the end of the day regardless of what negotiators say there are only 3 things that are true.
It is up to the UK how the UK governs its international borders, if it chose not to install border infrastructure, no other country can force it to. (same as nobody forces the UK to station customs office at each fishing village (sea port.)
It is up to Ireland how it enforces its international borders (land an sea) it may chose not to install a "hard border"
It is up to the EU whether it applies pressure to Ireland to break the good Friday agreement and install border infrastructure, (a hard border) or whether it will operate a "possibly permeable" frontier.
All these points are simply political points, and therefore just the opinion of whoever rules in the day. though they will be argued as though they are facts.

As a Brit, I don't want us to have a negotiating team at all. I don't want a withdrawal agreement, I just want to continue being part of the EU.
That's not to say I don't want to see changes to the relationship. I want us to be full members of Schengen. I want us to join the Euro. I want us to commit in deed and not mearly word to the principle of ever closer union. Eventually, I'd like to see a system where there is a two-tier system of governance in Europe, with the European Parliament being the supreme authority, and the current National governments act as regional governments, administering their territories as part of a greater European whole.
This would explain so much.

Now it wants to regain its former preeminence. ‘ Won’t happen!. The other 27 member states won’t have it.
Thing is it’s not Brussels. It’s the other 27. Britain’s trade with them is a tiny fraction of the trade they do with other.
I totally get why British people would like not to be beholden to the wishes of people in the other 27 member states. It’s just that it works both ways. Margaret Thatcher’s vision off the single market was a level playing field. This was her gift to the EU. Now the other 27 don’t want to give it up.

By leaving the single market and customs union but wanting to keep the border open, the UK is essentially trying to close a door but still allow things to pass through it. It's completely illogical.

The UK is trying to become an entirely different customs territory (closing the door) without installing a border between itself and Ireland, (allowing things to pass through freely). Sabine says in this video from 9:20, that there's no way around having a border between two different legal territories. They've looked at every border they can and can't find any example, any precedent for how that's even possible. The technology to automate it does not yet exist. That's what I meant.

Clear, concise, informative and unemotional - she should be interviewed far more on UK television for the electorate to be correctly informed and not misled. The UK was always in safe hands in the EU and profitably placed in the largest trading block. It took lies and fantasies to convince the politically uneducated electorate to want to leave for personal gain of a small number of very divisive and powerful politicians.
If the UK still wants to leave, knowing what they now now about the disadvantages and lack of benefits, the withdrawal should be phased. A careful and measured step at a time. Leave but stay in the single market and customs union and, as methods become available to keep a soft border on the island or Ireland then, and only then, take the next carefully measured and fully supported and publicly endorsed step. Only fools rush out where angels fear to tread.
Whether you are for or against Brexit, it is hard not to see Sabine Weyand as an intelligent, informed and articulate person, setting out the current position clearly -- in excellent English. Which is why it's sad to see many of the comments below focusing on for/against Brexit, conspiracy theories and even childish name-calling between commenters -- often in barely functional English.

The UK is the slowest kid in the class when it comes to understanding the EU and their obligations to the Good Friday Agreement. The anti-reality discussions in the UK about "binning the backstop" illustrate how out of touch the politicians really are.

So eloquently spoken what a brilliant lady. Facts are facts...I spoke with a hardcore Brexiteer recently not to argue in anyway but to try to understand the reasoning and potential solutions available. It was truly shocking how argumentative and defensive he became when I asked a few simple questions. Ignorance is bliss for some people.
Excellent summary of the current situation. The Uk is stepping from "Great Britain" to "Little England"...and will create chaos in Ireland...again.
I miss the days when 65M Brits all suddenly became experts in international trade deals - everyone - plumbers, managers, delivery drivers, bankers, salesman... all battling it out on social media about who knows the most about bilateral market-market trade deals. Now days people are just arguing about which way is up.
Imagine the meeting with UK's representatives, it must look like a headmaster schooling preschoolers
she really impressed me, professional, smart, i really like her. i usually have no high opinion on politicians, cause most of them are not qualified, but seeing her represent the interests of the EU makes me feel more easy now

Chaos & messes need not just happen spontaneously & too late to be prevented because they are unexpected, but they are planned and carefully implemented especially when there is collusion between the 2 sides. I wager there are no minutes recorded by any means of what the participants actually said at all the meetings which took place; we just have to take Weyand's word for the claims made in her video. Varoufakis can confirm important talks are not customarily recorded.
