It's simple & done just right, best part is that it's a project of a couple that loves cars & that's a very rare thing to see. We can also see a second project car in the garage hopefully we can revisit them.
I liked the outtakes btw. It really shows that you are you. Nothing fake, you are exactly who we see. You have a great, naturally friendly personality... love your natural look.. those things are what keeps me watching. Something that you may find odd, I noticed that you have normal eyebrows not plucked to slivers.. it's a small thing, but I think it adds to your natural beauty... You're such a naturally pretty woman. My significant other is the one who saw the notification first, she's a fan too... I think she watches for the same reasons, she doesn't like the fake women out their either. It's very refreshing to see the real person. You make these videos worth watching. We enjoy every one of them because you're in them. And..you actually reply. Greatly appreciated. Thank you.
@@maxxwellbeing5208 Haha Thank you! I actually do have to manage these eyebrows closely or they can get away from me! LOL But I know what you're saying. 😊 Thanks for watching and always commenting, too. 🤙
@@NicoleJohnsonsDetour Yes..I can see that they're maintained very nicely Nicole...but at least your's are still there... you know what I mean. Some woman go to far... for some reason they just keep plucking and plucking until there's nothing left. Your's are just right. They suit you. For example, look at Nancy Pelosi, she has to paint hers on. They're painted so high that on occasion, she looks like a surprised Michael Jackson. Personally, as long as they're not giant bush hogs or a uni-brow.... I'm good. I keep watching because what you do is actually quite interesting. And the way you approach each builder with such genuine interest making it more about them than you is commendable. I like that. It doesn't hurt that we get to watch a beautiful, down to earth, cool chick who doesn't mind getting dirty that really seems to enjoy what she's doing either. You have a great concept. I've had a number of cars that I've built over the years and my girlfriends did not share my interest. They just liked driving in them. I had a 64 and a 66 Galaxy 500GT, 68 to 72 Chevelles, 72 Chevy half ton, 79 -81 Malibus and so on. The last one was an 81 Malibu, I changed the front clip to the double headlights like the El Camino and fancied it up with the IROC-SS Body kit. (Ground effects) That was a nice car. Now I just drive old F150's... they're getting harder to find in good shape now. Anyway, I'm rambling. Keep them coming. Thank you for responding Nicole. It must take up a lot of your time, so it's greatly appreciated. Be well.
It was a blast! Nicole is a natural when it comes to understanding cars in general. The car seems to have this happy go lucky vibe like it's happy to be back on the road! Maybe it's the color 😁
Thanks I love flying model aircraft in my spare time it's so amazing to be able to control something in the sky with no strings attached. And there's nothing like having a garage full of birds 🤣
@@harryshomegarage I tried flying an RC airplane maybe 10 years ago. I crashed it up so bad that it was mostly tape and hot glue by the time I was finally able to keep it in the air. I had fun with it for a few minutes then got it stuck in the top of a 70 foot tree. I didn't mess with RC again until about 2 years ago and discovered FPV drones. I've been flying those for a while and am about to buy a plane again. I'm sure from what I've learned with the drones that I can keep the plane in the air now. I also work in a composite shop and build the molds for carbon fiber racecar bodies. I repair the bodies and we also have a paint shop and do a lot of old classic cars and late model Ferraris and Lamborghinis. We have a 66 Mustang Shelby 350 fastback in there now.
@@CarbonGlassMan Wow Holy smokes! FPV drones are way harder to fly so I'm sure you'll have no trouble with a plane now and the technology has also improved so should be a walk in the park 😉
FPV drones are so cool but take some mad skills! For our Ultra4 Bronco episode (ua-cam.com/video/TnsC8Q2JWMc/v-deo.html), we purchased an FPV drone to keep up with the high speed of that car in the desert. My son actually flew it, but had only a few days of practice before the shoot. I was impressed he picked it up so quickly! I blame all the video games he's played 😂
Hind sight is always 20/20 vision. Who would have guess that vehicles today packed with safety and technology would cost soo much$$$$$$$. The cheap fun car you can buy and modify to your taste is gone for good. The fixable older project chassis of any make are super hard to find and if you find one its thousands too. My older brother bought a brand new 510 back in 72 and drove in till it dropped...up here in Canada rust is bad. Somewhere along the way I put new fibreglass fenders on it for him and re-painted it in a chicken coop...when it finally completely rusted apart the engine was still running strong ! With its IRS and nimble road manners called it a poor-man's BMW.
Big Island of Hawaii!!!! I'm on the Big Island of Hawaii. I bought my first 510 at 14 in 1984 and just bought my LAST 510 at 53 in 2003 a few weeks ago! Sweet ride. :)
my dad had a Datsun 510 when i was younger he drove it to work and back Forestville to san Fransisco the car got 100,000 miles in a year miss that car hope they enjoy that car
I purchased a Datsun 510 in 1972. It cost $2,445.00. It was a blast to drive and with some after market tires, it out handled many of the “sports cars” of the day.
Got my attention with the two beetles, ended up binge watching all of the episodes. I like your style of calm, low key , quiet conversation, with the owners, and let the cars "talk", by your quality editing, and footage. A lot of passion is shown, without the " in your face " flair. It's really.....intimate.
Great job Nicole, first time watching your channel and glad I did. I was hoping you would talk about the independent rear end, but that's okay. My very first car was a 1971 4-speed manual Datsun 510 4-door sedan, light yellow with a black vinyl top and black interior. I bought the car near SeaTac airport in 1975 from a women (she purchased the car brand new in downtown Seattle) who just got married and worked for the airlines. So needless to say the car had less than 9,000 miles on it. I had to work and save the money to buy the car and have enough for insurance. My Dad and I had been looking for cars that were less than $1,500, but this car was selling for $1,800. I talked my Dad into going to look at it anyway, even though it was over my budget. The women sold the car to us for $1,400, but I didn't have enough for insurance, so I talked my Dad into lending me the extra $200 I needed with the promise that I had to pay it back within 6 months (He really liked the car also and knew it was like new, so he let me buy it). I had the car for just shy of 8 years. I modified the exhaust with a high RPM long header and 2 and half inch pipe with what was called at the time a turbo muffler (Exhaust Specialties did the work in Ballard or Seattle area). I had it dyno tuned at the only place around that did it (never heard of that before, a friend told me about the shop just off of 145th and Highway 99 in 1976). With the header and the exhaust it pulled a 104 HP out of that 1600 engine, yeee haaa! It did 17 second flat quarter mile runs at between 70 & 74 MPH at SIR in Kent, could not get to go any faster even with speed shifting. The car could cook and the front end started floating over 120 MPH, no spoilers (speedo only went to 120). When I owned the car I didn't even know it had a independent rear end. I learned a lot since then because of others teaching me all about those Datsun 510's from fine people like yourself and others in the last 40 years. Thanks again and I hope you and your dear family have a wonderful week and weekend!! [[ I'll be watching for more for sure. ]]
love that story! That was definitely a fast car at the time probably faster than some V8s considering the Horsepower to weight ratio. Thanks for sharing

Crazy thing is i was looking at this datsun to buy, when it was posted for sale but couldn't bring myself to do it with the skyline rear end, big ups to this man
Nice. My first car was a wrecked Opal Manta without an engine. I was 15 y/o and my parents were like here you go. I figured it out, rebuilt the engine and did most of the body work. I learned soo much and an still thankful that i got that experience at a young age. This project on the Datsun triggered so many great memories. Thanks Nicole!!!
I truly believe that is an amazing gift. There really is a great feeling of satisfaction when you can accomplish something like that at such an early age. Definitely a confidence booster if you're pursuing a career in automotive.
This was my first car but in a 4 door and in Australia was just called a Datsun 1600. I painted it Monza red and it had a fully worked 1800 engine from a 180B and it sounded just like Harry's car and made me smile. Also went like hell and no matter how you drove it the gearbox and diff just took it. I taught my wife of 30 years to drive in the 1600 and had a lot of good times and memories. I wish I still have that car and have been looking but the price of a poor condition vehicle is Australia is overwelming. Maybe on day the stars will align? Thank you Nicole, Harry and and Shelly for allowing us to see this car of beauty. You should be very proud
Outstanding episode Nicole. Great interview and interaction with the builder. The 510 has always been a favorite of mine having grown up watching the BRE Datsuns race at Laguna Seca as a kid. This one is a testament to the builder’s passion and dedication. Love what you do!
I’d never heard the train tracks story either, we didn’t have trains near the reservation where I grew up either. Lol. Man this guys ride reminds me of the mini truck era on Oahu in the late 80’s. Nice to see an old school guy keeping it alive. Cool story and car.
Well that made my day seeing that beautiful car the 510 Datsun has always been one of my favourite cars since I was a little boy. I've never been able to own one but hopefully one day that'll still will happen. Thank you Nicole for showing this car it brings back so many memories.
Love it! Had a 510 as my first car. I raced Mulholland Drive with it as a teenager and I have another one now. I’m turning it into a 70s style Mulholland racer. Reliving my childhood!
I owned one of these back in the early 1970's as I was learning my mechanics trade, in a Datsun shop. Mine was almost the same blue but not supersonic :) . I wish that I had never let it go but I wanted to buy a 200SX Datsun. It was also lots of fun to drive. Thanks for the great show.

Your show is something really special. I even tear up sometimes watching it lol. Your crazy enthusiasm and aura, the way you interact with people mixed with mental machines, sounds and people. It's really a one of a kind gem this show of yours. Thank you and keep up the good work!
Such a joy to have your work pop up. Nicole you are just wonderful at car personing. Thank you so much. In the 70's I got bored with grad school and started a 'furrin' car repair shop in the middle of nowhere. Had a state cow university and an army base, so there were plenty of Jags, Healeys, Alfas, Bimmers and a few Spyders, and a herd of the usual stuff. We had maybe a half dozen of these depend on us, and i loved 'em. They were (unlike the European stuff) bulletproof (we didn't see 'em much, so yes, you didn't hafta worry about breaking them), they were, in the true sense of the word, ELEGANT. Simple and functional. They were wonderfully engineered, so they were easy to work on. And for the day, FAST. They were fun as a DD and at the local autocross runs and, in the right hands, would run with the best of the Bimmers and Alfas. Lovely, lovely cars. Thanks for bringing back those memories. Please keep up the wonderful work, kid.
Love your work Nicole! Cars made by the hands of the lunatics who own and drive them are so much more interesting and inspiring than mega budget outsourced ones.
Fascinating little car. Had a B210 back in the day, never would have considered it collectable. I like that blue with the stripe quite a bit. Good one Miss Johnson, more please!
My 1st car was the B210 GX hatchback in 💩 Brown. It had the Spory steering wheel and bucket seets from the Z cars of the era, as well as the dog-leg 5 speed gear box with no lock out for reverse, just a buzzer in the dash. It was a fun little car.
Thank You. The original blue and white 510 back in Hawaii got painted just like that but I used rattle can from Ace Hardware. 5 cans of white and 10 cans of sky blue. It was a low budget $50 paint job that people actually thought was pretty cool and that's why I just had to do it again with real paint :)

I would love to restore another 510. Great memories. Love Datsuns. Ez to fix too.
It's simple & done just right, best part is that it's a project of a couple that loves cars & that's a very rare thing to see. We can also see a second project car in the garage hopefully we can revisit them.
Glad you enjoyed watching..thank you!
Thank you! Shelley and I appreciate the love, the other car has an incredible story behind it as well! It may take a Detour someday 😃

I learned about Datson’s and wishes today! Thanks Nicole 😎
Fantastic! Thank you for watching!!
Nice rescue puppy!

Thank You!
The 510!! What a rad little ride my 1st 2nd and 3rd cars in highschool..corners like crazy..thanks Harry and Nicole, the 510 lives again!!
You're welcome!! Glad you enjoyed watching!!
You looked like you enjoyed this little car...lots of smiles. I really liked this guy's build. Very interesting mellow fellow, what a talented man.
Yes I did enjoy this car!! Thank you for watching!!
That's a nice build. A head Turner for sure.
Glad you liked it..thanks for watching!

This is my kind of guy. The RC planes, the cars, the do it yourself kind of thing.
Yes..I agree. Thank for watching!!
Super nice Datsun 510.

Escondido AKA the hidden valley just north of San Diego. 🤙
Had a 72 510 in 1979/80. Ran perfect...solid underneath..great interior..50,000 miles. Needed paint. Why didnt I keep it...loved that car.
Thanks for sharing!!
Don't feel bad I let a good solid 510 go in 2003 it was a 72 original California car and had no rust. It still kills me. Thanks for the love 🤙
With its IRS and nimble road manners called it a poor-man's BMW.
and you do a great job btw..stopping to explain the cross flow ..nice

That last shot of the “mirror”….. the HE>I sticker. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

I'm impressed how much mechanical and automobile historical knowledge you have.
Thank you, I appreciate that!
I purchased a Datsun 510 in 1972. It cost $2,445.00. It was a blast to drive and with some after market tires, it out handled many of the “sports cars” of the day.
Awesome!! Thank you for sharing!!
Awesome, thank you!
My Wife had a 1973 Datsun 510. Orange, handled very well with rear IRS. She since was able to pose in one at COTA, modded for the track.
I absolutly love this car....DATSUN!!

Thanks for the Love Brother!
love it... they were called the Datsun 1600 here
Thanks for the love ❤️
Glad you enjoyed it. Thank you for sharing you're story with us..love it!
love that story! That was definitely a fast car at the time probably faster than some V8s considering the Horsepower to weight ratio. Thanks for sharing

Thanks for sharing..glad you enjoyed watching!
Thank you for sharing your story with us. We're glad you enjoyed watching!!

I’d never heard the train tracks story either, we didn’t have trains near the reservation where I grew up either. Lol. Man this guys ride reminds me of the mini truck era on Oahu in the late 80’s. Nice to see an old school guy keeping it alive. Cool story and car.
