I have been associated with the metal industry- Aluminum all of my working life. I concur with you about the joy of working with metal. Welding is an art too. Great introduction
I came here from Sailing Melody. I used to own a 30 foot wooden cutter that was 7 tons displacement so I am familiar with restoring boats. But for most of a lifetime I was a Machinist Mill Wright so maint. is my second name. As time goes on you will find me full of sage advice on both subjects.
It is awesome Nigel. I was a dental technician for a number of years then retrained and spent the last 20 years of working life as a heating engineer. I may be a girlie but I am a sucker for a workshop full of tools.
Well done mate I hope your channel is a success, my only suggestion would be to cut the wall out of the right hand container and that would open up all that area and give you more room to expand that side
Super impressed with the work You did for Andy and Melissa...looking forward to following your creative journey as well! Best of luck to You from the West coast of Canada ! 🏴☠️
From north of Seattle, WA, I look forward to watching your channel, thank you for the work you have done on Melody, and hope for the best on your new UA-cam channel.
Another Sailing Melody incomer! I’ve been so impressed by how kind you’ve been helping them out, and so glad that you’ve now started your own channel. So sorry that you lost your dad - but it’s lovely that you’re breathing fresh life into a workshop that clearly has so many wonderful memories for you.
Thank you Dave.. Yes it does hold a lot of memories... I'm currently filming a very special restoration episode, restoring something quite unique my dad made in 1978.. You might need a box of cleanex for that one
Hay Nigel, just subscribed to your chanel, I own a steel boat so therefore are vary interested in seeing some of the tricks of the trade. & Mostly because I have been well impressed with the work you have done on melody. What you did for them was mind blowing, it's good bugga's like you that make the world go round. SV Kiwi Lady Opua Bay of islands New Zealand 👍
Absolutely a natural in front of camera Nigel. I think the channel will do very well and I am looking forward to watching it progress (and the projects of course).
Congrats on the channel love your work, may I suggest you put the large bench on heavy casters so you can move it around the floor to best suit a particular job or even into the corner if you need more floor space. best of luck with the channel look forward to watching the projects
Great job Nigel! I reckon you have everything under control. I’d be sectioning off the front quarter of the fight hand container and keeping all the stuff like lawnmowers etc that you still need to keep somewhere, but are not part of the machine shop. Then I’d cut a big door through between. Keep up the good work.
Hi Nigel i just your site from sailing melody yes they are a very nice family enjoyed the video sorry about the lose of your father he left you a very nice workshop tractor looked almost new well maintained if you have spare space in the other container why not transfer some of the stuff from the first container creating space to move things around to get the space you need anyway i have subscribed and good luck Kevin in Thailand
Hello from Ontario Canada Andy sent me over to check out your channel and I think I’ll enjoy watching your projects as well. I’m currently looking at setting up a container shop in the same manner, but I plan to remove on of the inside walls of one container to create a larger open space. Also, since it gets cold in Canada, I’ll be insulating and heating it with a pellet stove. Cheers~aaron
Hi Neil. I'm from Kitchener Ontario Canada 🇨🇦 😎. Just look at your Dad stuff think before you put in garbage. My dad and my pass away and take photos before removing. You take care of you and your family. Sorry about your Dad
Its a nice little work shop you have there and you seem to have a good plan for what your needs are and I sure you will adjust things as needed as you go along but so far well done .
Right Nigel first thing ya need is a mobile wheeled Cup of Tea Holder so a drink is always at hand as welding is a thirsty business.Instead of quickly turning round and spilling it if it's in the Holder can,t happen. Yeah Hack saw way to go save so much time. Probably a Horizontal / vertical Mill as well. Probably be better if material in spare container out of the way as most will sit for a bit space better used for tools etc. Yes alround table way to go. Bench space is everything any thing else can go in spare container. Most of your work will be bespoke such as the Melody stuff so will be super interesting. Camera work fine Audio loud and clear all good. ;0)
Great to see you’ve started your own channel. At some point can you explain the difference between TIG and MIG welding and when you would use each method. Looking forward to future episodes and the redevelopment of the workshop. Cheers Col
Hi Nigel. Having been told by Andy and Melissa that I need to come and see your videos, here I am catching up on your videos. I’ve subscribed and look forward to some exciting stuff. Can’t make any useful suggestions on the floor space thing you want. But I do have a small worry for the security aspects. You’ve got lots of nice equipment I’d hate to think someone tried to break in or trash the place.
Hi I've been watching your excellent work on sailing melody and i have subscribed to your new channel, and looking forward to seeing your channel grow.......
Looking forward to you making all kinds of cool metal stuff and you did a great job on your first video, you are a natural in front of the camera. Nice workshop your dad built. Rick in Arizona
Hi Nigel yes I agree that would be a wonderful spot , I come over from Melody love your videos keep up the good work it’s going to be great Cliff from Logan city Queensland Australia from the big island
I had a thought about that swing crane it was. To somehow weld an I beam across the top and with an electric winch utilise it as a gantry crane but it’s just a thought ?! 🖖🏻😜🕷🕸
Nigel, In the main shop area I think you should move your standing tools to either end and put an assembly table in the middle of the room. Also wonder if you could take the wall out that goes to the currently unused container to increase your working foot print. In the other container I think shelves all the way down both sides. Keep the lathe out so it doesn't get difficult to get to, just my 2 cents. :) Also congrats on the new channel look forward to seeing your projects!
Looks like a good space to create interesting projects, I will be following along, for me the engineering tips and tricks and good detailed explanations would be preferred content, you sound knowledgeable and your voice and mannerisms is good on camera so winning combination 👍 best of luck

Well done Nigel, Love the idea's for the workshop. I Have been following a lady in the States called April Wilkerson who does a lot of indoor and outdoor projects more often with wood than with metal. As April has altered and expanded her workshop quite a few times she has constructed furniture and fittings to make the most of the space. i would recomend watching some of her early video's it might give you some idea's.
My shop has NEVER been sorted out the way I want it to be. I added tools as the years went by. The space can accommodate them, but I would need to do a thorough re-organization, as you do. I agree with you about the back wall shelving. Getting rid of it would really make a nice space for your lathe. I have a wood lathe that I crammed in to the back of my shop but it's not ideal. Hi Jeffrey, one reason for thinking the lathe should stay one of the containers is its a lot easier to heat in winter... gets quite cold here and I'm a wuss when it comes to the cold lol
If you move the lath to the back, is there enough room for lengthy items? Looking forward to seeing your channel grow, as Andy's did on sailing Melody :-)
Thanks Nev.. thats a really good point.. most parts I have done so far are small.. but you have given me an idea for a project.. what about a small removable panel in the outside wall for long shafts etc to pass through?
Thanks a lot enjoyed the video. I’ve always wanted to have a go at welding and have a few projects I’d like to do but have never had time to get into it. What sort of welding would you recommend starting with?
