There's an "old" song from Fiddler on the Roof titled, "If I Was a Rich Man". In it, the peasant farmer sings about, among other things, how being rich means people don't care if you're right or wrong, they'll listen to you anyway. Fiddler on the Roof is a 1905 play.
The biggest problem is in his very first statement “Why do you want to sit around and chill out for 3 days?” That 3 days isn’t for sitting down doing nothing, it’s for living my life. I go to work to earn money so I can have money to go live my life for the rest of the time. As it is with a 5 day work week I have only 2 days to rest and recover, get all my errands done, and go live the rest of my life. Honestly feels like a scam. People like him think work=life while most of us just go to work to fund our lives.
Honestly it doesn’t need any specific reasoning. If I wanna take my 3 days and binge Breaking Bad and play Doom, I should be able to if I’ve put my time and effort in on those 4 days.
well, what are you doing with those two days off? See, it's as relevant as asking about three days and the answer to either of those questions is "none of your business"
Does it matter if you were sitting around on the couch for 3 days? It is your time off and PBD has no business wondering what you are doing with your time off.
same with the whole "go back to the office". At least there, I can see the vested interest in keeping the buildings valuable that they often own or are invested in. However, there is NO REASON to be against this. And he showed everyone this by having 0 actual arguments. Like, at all. Of course, if it turns out to have negative effects overall on the company, that would make sense, but we have to wait for the actual data to come in to make that assessment.
Meh, I dunno. I mean if your making it OT at 32 a lot of poor people are just gonna get poorer. Sounds good for people with salary positions, or where the specific hours you work don't matter but sounds like it could have unintended negative consequences for the most vulnerable.
I believe Patrick has a lot of traumas from his upbringing of being a refugee from Iran. He suffered a lot growing up. I think because of that trauma he believes everybody else has to suffer because he had to suffer. It's the wrong type of mentality to have but I have seen plenty of people with that mindset that had traumatic childhood experiences.
My father worked for 30+ years as a police officer. The entire department worked 4x10 hour work days each week and somehow they figured out a way to keep officers on patrol 24/7 - it would probably go over this guy’s head though.

The real trouble they are afraid of people getting into by having more free time is getting involved in politics, becoming more aware of civics, and getting involved in their community. If people have more time to come together, it's harder for people like this to keep them divided.
He and many like him might be against 4 day work week because it would give people more time to work on personal projects that could free them from a day-job they dislike. 4 day work week may also give people more time find a job they like. Folks could also just find a way to work less overall and have a better quality of life.

It's so dumb to fight against. Assuming employees keep the same level of quality or better because they are less stressed, then the employer also saves an hour of labor for every person on their payroll.

It also was only a few decades ago that a 6 day work week was fairly typical in Japan. The work week changing has been shockingly quick, but given the level of intensity Japanese workplaces still have a reputation for I'm not sure the 4 days is really 'allowed' most places even if it is on paper.

@@tiagodagostini The 5 day work week is a product of the early 20th century factory work. Its relic of the past. Different industries have different ideal working days. Some are task/project based which could even possibly be 1 day per week theoretically. And most people will probably work more as long as their extra hours and productivity are proportionally compensated.
For programmers, switching from a 5x8 hour workday schedule to a 4x10 hour workday schedule such that you have e.g. wednesday, saturday and sunday off has, for us, increased productivity as instead of wearing people out all week and losing more of the day percentage-wise in meetings, programmers can do two "sprints" per week, get more stuff done, and have more time to collect themselves again. Time will tell if this works in the long run, but it's worked just fine for a year.
Anyone that observes reality and the rhythms of humans can see this. Is it just coincidence that everyone gets worn out around 1-2 pm? Is it just coincidence that when we ever do finally get 3 days off, we all begin to feel a little alive again? Is it coincidence that universally, even though WAY too many of us are forced into longer and longer and MORE days at work that most efforts after 8-10 hrs a day and after 3-4 days in a row of that kind of push, the productivity cranked out from that is all net negative? No. This is exactly how the world should be run…in the natural phases of the sun or the moon or whatever the higher energies are that guide us all are. The entire world would be better off in every possible way, except the ones who thrive on misery and death. Why are they the ones we give power and therefore forced to give all of our money to at the end of a metaphorical gun? My only real hope is that this overdrive that is being supercharged now in such a way that it HAS to quickly end. But that head on crash is gonna hurt the bystanders much worse than it hurts the drivers who cause the crash…as per uszh We do need work, and we do need to feel productive, but we DON’T need constant pushing and we DO desperately need rest and recovery time, and we are being robbed of that, every day, every week and every year…because we have given up power to exactly the wrong kind of thinkers. Sharks are lone predators and sneaky deceivers-NOT good leaders.

I've had a 4 day, 40 hour work week for almost 13 years now. And I vastly prefer it compared to when I worked 5 days at 8 hours each. Most of us here really like it, mostly because we get 3 days off during the week. It let's me plan doctor appointments easier, I get to go on school field trips with my youngest child that I never got to do with the older ones due to work schedules, and I'm now finally able to really start furthering my education since I have a solid 3 days I can devote to it with the family at school/work. Sure it can get tiring working from 6:45am until 6:00pm, but 3 days off makes it totally worth it in my opinion. It would be nice if other companies did something similar, or at least had the option. This isn't just for salaried workers, which is what I'm assuming this guy is ranting about. I'm hourly and it works just fine.
Things I would do with 3 days off? Let’s see: Meal prep. clean the house. engage with my own hobbies. spend meaningful time with my kids. Spend meaningful time with my spouse. go on a short vacation go to a theme park add on to a book I want to write. go to the beach rest. exercise better
I love how most of the comments in his vid so are even like “nah bro.” I’ve been in 5 day a week jobs since 2010. Fridays are always BS days where no one wants meetings and take off early. It’s a very common thing.
I spent a number of years trying to work hard on Fridays, and when I had a job where my output was relatively easy to measure, I did nearly the same work on Friday as all the rest of the days. Towards the end of one year, I had some use it or lose it PTO, and my wife couldn't take off, so I couldn't plan a big trip. I took every Friday in November and December off, and already in mid-November it was clear that my productivity on Monday to Thursday was higher. For the first two weeks of December, I did more work than usual in just four days per week. I told my boss about this, and he said I should use PTO to take Fridays off all the time (but wouldn't give me any extra to do that.)
I work 10-12 hour days 5 days a week (plus saturday every 3 weeks) as a delivery driver and it has essentially turned my life into a depressing grind. Money is important, but I’ve now learned just how valuable time is too. I havent found that balance. Doing a job you love is a luxury that only few can afford. If you are fortunate enough to be in that position count your blessings. A four day week might give people who cannot be passionate about a job the time to pursue things they are passionate about, like family, hobbies etc.
This is AMERICA. no matter how you wrap that shit up, they'll eventually find your butthole and the same people bitchin' about their jobs, are still going to bitch about their jobs.

I agree, though don't get me wrong, some sectors a 4 day work week doesn't work or is even worse. Currently I'm a FIFO worker on 4/3 roster 12 hour shifts with no back to back i.e. im on site every week, so I exceed the 40 hours per week, but the problem is its exhausting with only a 3 day weekend and the nature of FIFO requires substantial travel time as well. I'm all for a 4 day work week/40 hour work week in general, but some industries it may simply cannot be done unless they take on radical changes themselves. I'm thinking with big corporations that have these kind of set ups is to employ more staff for coverage of the 3 days. I recon that is easy to do, simply reduce the dividends to rich corporate shareholders and spend less reroutes investing in stocks and more on the workers who make the money for the company in the first place.

I’ll just discount whatever PDB says on this. Entrepreneurs need and want to put as much or little effort into their businesses, high risk & reward. I as an employee put my time in but life is more than just a cubicle. 3 days is awesome to recover and have good mental health. Fridays I’m too tired to party, Saturday is awesome but Sundays are shot because you still have to go to bed early for work Monday. Even if it’s a day off mid week it still helps by doing errands, avoiding traffic, picking up kids from school. COVID taught us a lot and one huge thing is life it too short, work remote is now the way to go.
I am surprised CEOs like Patrick were able to develop successful businesses, given that logic and math isn't really their strong point... Patrick is very concerned about what you are going to do with your time off when you're working for him but I can guarantee you he doesn't care what you're going to do with your free time one he has to downsize his operations and give ppl their separation papers. Executive people like this are really afraid that you may have more time to start your own business, upskill or interview elsewhere so they rather keep you busy and tired on their hamster wheel generating profits for them than you have free time to think of important questions like, what the heck am I doing with my life...

Success to most of us is being able to pay all our bills and then spend as much time with our families as possible. Only psychopaths keep going after more and more money and power. Why? She said most men said this, "I wish I didn’t work so hard. This came from every male patient that I nursed. They missed their children’s youth and their partner’s companionship. Women also spoke of this regret. But as most were from an older generation, many of the female patients had not been breadwinners."

There's also the well established notion of creative leisure. “He who works all day, has no time to make money.” - John D. Rockefeller.
One thing I seem to be noticing about people who criticize employee rights (such as those who criticize people who want work-life balance, flex time, etc) tend to take the approach of viewing such people in an infantile or childish manner (such as suggesting they shouldn't be wusses, they have "too much time on their hands", etc).

Great video, good job Joshua! According to Harvard Business Review, CEOs spend 50% of their time talking to people and doing reviews as 50% of their work. The other 50% is the actual work. So a quick bit of math says most CEOs really spend about 2 to 3 days a week of actual work and then argue against a 4 day work week. Also, how often do you see their fancy cars in the executive parking spot on Friday afternoons? At my old company, if its Friday, warm and sunny, you will never see their car in their designated spot.
Every time I hear about a 4 day /40hr work week its better for them in every way and when I asked my dad. Someone who was ALWAYS about work perhaps to a fault. He said he'd happily take a 4 day work week specially if he can get weekends off.

The biggest problem is in his very first statement “Why do you want to sit around and chill out for 3 days?”
That 3 days isn’t for sitting down doing nothing, it’s for living my life.

The real trouble they are afraid of people getting into by having more free time is getting involved in politics, becoming more aware of civics, and getting involved in their community. If people have more time to come together, it's harder for people like this to keep them divided.

I spent a number of years trying to work hard on Fridays, and when I had a job where my output was relatively easy to measure, I did nearly the same work on Friday as all the rest of the days. I am 100% see the case for a four day work week. Hell I would even be OK with a three day work week as long as all of the expectations are being met, the amount of time, and the number of days doesn’t matter. Studies have shown that those who have more time off are way more productive.
Always a great video Josh, thank you. Can't describe enough how much your reasoning matters against these, for the lack of better words in the english language, idiots arguing against themselves. It's exactly like you said here, Pat, Dave and many, many others just don't want us mere mortals having a better life unless it's under their boot.

How appropriate considering that he professes to be a Christian.
The main flaw I see is that Patrick tries to correlate innovation with working hours. It is like trying to correlate ice cream sales and shark bites in Florida.
This guy and that Ramsey guy are like cartoon characters of a bad boss. Love the sweatpants at the end though!
Yeah I wouldn't work for either of them, but they have some good advice.
Sadly from what I have seen from the last couple jobs I’ve had, most bosses think like this. And they usually believe they can go on vacation whenever they want but will get super upset once you have a last minute emergency
Success to most of us is being able to pay all our bills and then spend as much time with our families as possible. Only psychopaths keep going after more and more money and power. Why? What's the point? You don't get to take money or power to the grave with you.
I heard a nurse once give an answer to the question, "what is the #1 regret you hear from people on their death beds?". She said most men said this, "I wish I didn’t work so hard. This came from every male patient that I nursed. They missed their children’s youth and their partner’s companionship. Women also spoke of this regret. But as most were from an older generation, many of the female patients had not been breadwinners."
I used to have a job that I had a 5 day work week at 6 hours a day getting full time pay and I found it fantastic. The biggest thing I noticed is how much more I was reading. Now I'm back to the 40 hour work week (with the option of overtime every dingle day) and I feel like I don't have time to get anything done.
Time is more valuable than money. You cannot buy time.
30 hours is actually considered "full time"
my last company gave that option at a prorated salary.
All of us are only allotted so much time on this Earth. And yet we waste it away to earn money, something that doesn't even really exist.

I’m glad you hit on the staggering part, Josh cus that’s how it actually works in the real world incorporating 4 day work weeks and it’s awesome
My Father was a CEO (when the title meant something) of a small technology company in silicon valley. The company manufactured prober devices for silicon chip wafers. There were about 750 employees. Back in the 1980's, he was a strong believer in the Four day work week. He found that call- in sick days were well below industry average and turnover was virtually non existent!
All of this translated into higher profits for the company and much happier employees. It was a win-win for everyone!
It is interesting how some entrepreneurs become popular and over time develop a sense of superiority that leads them to believe they can dictate how things should be done. I guess their ego's become inflated as a result of their success. Over time I think life will teach them how to become more humble.
He will not become more humble, unless he goes back to being one of us.
The only time they become humble is if they lose all of their wealth.

A four day work week is one more day to devote to Grothendieck or Aristotle, one more day devoted to Grothendieck or Aristotle is an extra day spent understanding the baseness of company leadership's obsession with wealth, Grothendieck teaches us that this obsession is unimportant, Aristotle teaches us that this obsession is damaging to our constitution, that a four day work week leans towards democracy, that a five day work week leans towards oligarchy, that we shouldn't support oligarchy, that we should support democracy.

Pez didn't even start in the last 30 years. They started in 1927. And Pez only has 90 employees. $29,000,000 selling candy with less than 100 employees is impressive to me. 🤷🏽♂️
The fact that a company that started in 1927 still has less than 100 employees today is a clear sign that the people running it are afraid of taking any kind of risk there is, their recent profit seem to be largely predicated on their reputation and/or probably due to the recent nostagia trend that started after the pandemic.

To repeat my comments on the previous part. Patrick runs an MLM with a work cult culture. So detached from the reality of most people.
And 95% of those so-called insurance agents at the company make commissions that are less than the federal minimum wage of $7.25hr. Coffeezilla exposed his MLM co.
This is the problem with these entrepreneur/self-help gurus: they have the mindset of modern employers, "you've got to be working & hustling 24/7". If this was the case, then why would any of these people need to enjoy fancy stuff like cars, homes, vacations especially if free time is "wasted time"? Contrary to what these hustlers tell people, not everyone will be or should be a business owner.

I just watched Patrick's video and I was thinking on how much I have to write about his unprofessional video.

When I read about the 4 hour work week a few years back studies were showing that workers were having the SAME productivity while working LESS hours.
As a CEO you can achieve the SAME work and have better employee satisfaction on top FOR FREE!
You also can have the excuse to pay LESS or withhold raises for a few years!
And the average millionaire in the US works 60 hours per week. But not everyone wants that!

14:50 innovation is literally a design to make processes more efficient and therefore liberating time for higher goals. According to Harvard Business Review, CEOs spend 50% of their time talking to people and doing reviews as 50% of their work. The other 50% is the actual work.
So a quick bit of math says most CEOs really spend about 2 to 3 days a week of actual work and then argue against a 4 day work week.

At my old company, if its Friday, warm and sunny, you will never see their car in their designated spot.
