That is his job. Being a successful guru is not about solving issues, it is about selling your solutions. And the best way to sell the solution is to appeal to what the people want.
Companies do not want to pay more, they want more for paying there employees less.
While employees do not want to be blamed for things that are not there fault.
So Simon sells companies and employees exactly what they want to hear as best he can.
He cannot sell the best solution because companies will not accept it, so he would not get the success he is looking for by addressing the elephant in the room.
If you have the best solution, nobody will really care or listen to your solution.
So he sells the idea that it is the leaders fault for not properly leading. If leaders became better at maximizing extraction from employees, then employees would give more.
He sells it to younger generations by saying that they are not giving enough productivity because the system failed them. They were raised that they deserve more when they really deserve less. That they should sacrifice more because it is fulfilling to maximize what you give to employers.
Which is bullshit manipulation, but it is working when it comes to selling his solution, that is what matters.
Most gurus are like this. They rarely sell the best solution, they sell you the best sounding solution that makes them the most money.

When you pay a personal trainer to tell yourself to do the exercise you already want yourself to do that's also psychological manipulation, but it's voluntary. I have no problem with the fact of psychological manipulation on the job, I try to do this to myself all the time, it just has to have the effects and purposes I agree with. Like when you join the army, you're marching together, shouting slogans, suffering for the sake of suffering, but all this manipulates you to be able to accomplish something as a group that you could never do before.

I've been in management for over 7yrs now. VERY true. Meetings are filled with Simon Wanna-be's. They can't even imagine that people would leave a mediocre paying job with poor work life balance. They blame it on managers......"people don't leave jobs, they leave bad managers". Omg if I had a dollar every time I heard that horse shit. Its why my departments are always the most stable while others crumble. Understand a job is a job, not a lifestyle. Understand its a transaction. Understand and respect peoples lives....dont guilt trip them for not wanting to hangout after work..... just let it be a job.....its NOT a mission! Once you understand that, you stop trying to manipulate or fool people into staying. Once people feel like they're talking to a real human and not some cheesy motivation salesman they're able to take you seriously and might stay a little longer....might help out more.....
Example.....someone calls u up, it was the wrong number. You tell them "wrong number" they say "oh I'm sorry"...maybe even change a generic joke.
Now imagine a telemarketer is calling you and harassing you.

@@wuzumaki An even simpler experiment is, how many of us still work at our first entry level job? My boss wasn't an asshole and was flexible in my needs. Still left because the job sucked and didn't pay enough. I think HR and CEO's like this idea that retention is within their control for free by simply being "nice". Sure if your boss is an ass people will absolutely quit, but if the job just isn't that great it doesn't matter how good a boss is people will still leave.
CEO's want slaves, feel their entitled to slaves, call people who don't wanna be slaves lazy....and call existing slaves "family" because it helps them feel like they're a good person.

They usually say we are "family", but my job is not my family.
When my gramma died (God Bless her soul), did any of my colleagues cared? No. (there was 1 exception, because he was my friend before this job post).
Later when our boss's dad died, I recieved an e-mail asking if I wanted to participate in a crown of flowers to send to a funeral... are you kidding me? F-That, I'm not drinking the kool-aid. I'm here to do my job and that's it.
I'll fix you computers and manage your servers and IT department, but that's it; they are not paying me to do more than that. I don't own the company, management presents it as family but it is one-sided.

You probably didn't have much of social life in your job cause this sounds cartoonish, I don't have much of social life in my job yet when I go through a misfortune my Co workers were very supportative. But then agains this anecdotal. A job is still a job yes people are people just because you are working with someone doesn't mean they all turn into sociopaths.

I've always had a weird feeling that Simon's talks weren't designed for the regular employee in mind, but to placate to the executives. In their mind, they want justification and excuses for the culture they created.
That is always the case when a company hires someone like him.
Management finds it easier to hire a motivational speaker than to make changes that actually motivate people.
I think you’re overthinking this. It’s not like he goes in there and does a case study of the company - he probably meets with upper management for a few one-on-ones, and then launches into his motivational speech for a company sit down - basically what GaryVee does. You’re statement reads like he’s there to justify bad culture, I’m sure he’s given presentations at companies that have healthy cultures too. Your outlook is too myopic.

I am certain that many bad companies hire Sinek to do just what you said - and he does so for a fat fee. My position is that, if you read/watch him, there are nuggets of good stuff. Are they original? Nope. Are they particularly insightful? depends on where your at in your career and where you want to go. Like I’ve said in other comments, there 10-20% that is useful. The rest is either junk or not useful to you/me. Take the 10% that can help - throw the rest in the junk pile.

As an extremely patient person, I can say from extensive personal experience that few people ever notice that you are patient. Few people realize you are being patient and thinking of them- most people are self-absorbed and think you just don’t notice how terrible they are being
As an engineer, I really appriciate your technical breakdown of this man's style of talking. I've met people like him and they trigger my intuition to throw up a red flag of distrust. Now I have a better understanding why.

Fast forward to today, I've realized that all of these millions of self-development books that exist basically just contain the same content, and most of it is really just common sense too.

I bellowed loudly and since then I don't give a single fck about anything that happens there

Back at my first job they made us watch Simon Sinek. Specifically the video where he talks about how millenials quit too early. Being a fresh graduate I totally believed his words and powered through the job despite it being the most grueling, exploitative, and anxiety-inducing job I've ever been to. I quit after 6 months because I couldn't take it anymore. I would have done so earlier if not for the CEO actually threatening to ruin our reputation if we "broke our promise" of working for the company at least a year. I realize now that they made us watch that vid because of the high turnover rate with that company. Some even quit without notice a week after being hired.
Imagine having high turnover and thinking it's an entire generation's fault rather than looking at your own processes and your own management practices to see what can be improved. Glad you got out of there

I worked at a company that started their vision & mission training with a Sinek video. I updated my resume and starting applying to new jobs as soon as the “training” was over.

It’s really interesting to hear an American perspective on work culture and dynamics. I’m from Norway and, from my personal experience at least, I have only worked under good bosses and with a good work culture. Here, it is illegal to fire someone without proof that you have done something actually wrong and haven’t changed after receiving several warnings. And even then, you are obligated to have two months notice. Our minimum wage is great and leader-follower culture is rather flat, i.e. your boss asks you for advice and such.
Anyone had similar experiences in your respective country?
I lived in Finland and there is a very different work culture.

Man I might move to one of these european countries if I find the motivation to speak the language.
In my country it is also illegal to fire people without justification, there must be reports of bad behavior or non-compliance, but if you are fired without justification they have to give you compensation for the years worked plus 3 months of salary. This is why I have seen many companies make their employees renew their contracts every few months and if they already have long-term employees they will do everything possible to pressure them into resigning. Currently, work is being done to make these illegal practices, but while it happens, I always advise the people I know to runaway from these types of companies.
I was in the military. I've had good leaders who utilized the talents of their subordinates and who put their comforts last. When I became a Sgt, I did the same thing. In the corporate world, leaders are more like managers. Managers here sometimes have a 'do as I say, not as I do' attitude.

I think the bigger issue is that his stuff resonates with so many people. It makes me wonder if a lot of people wander around through life doing very little introspection as to the structure they exist in and how to function well within it.
The fact that he has to point out that you need to find a way to compromise with people in order to work well together screams out that there is a problem in society where people are just not communicating and also are not aware that there is a problem in how they are behaving.
You actually have to be careful around him, because of How he makes people feel. So they dont listen to What he actually says.

First off...the dude doing the interview is a complete tool. Tried to watch a few of his interviews and just couldn't do it. Second, I've spent 25 years in corporate America. Anyone that thinks these big giant companies give a rat's azz about your personal development and happiness is absolutely clueless. Like Josh says...treat a job as an exchange of work for payment and nothing else and you'll be better for it.

It's best to just warn people of the negatives so that they make more educated decisions.
And often times, he does give solutions.
- Work from home? Just let people decide where they want to work, and if their performance suffers, talk to them and if it doesn't work out, let them go.
- Teambuilding? Avoid it, make it optional and don't punish the employees for not attending.
- "Corporate parties" and ridiculous "Company perks"? Just give people more money, a lot of those "perks" are often not real perks.

It's so patently false, too. I'm naturally overly kind and apologetic. You'd think these would be good leadership traits, but they're actually poisonous as hell. If you hire people, and then you don't know how to direct them, everyone in that interaction suffers. The workers don't know what to do, and the leader gets treated like a fool. A leader has to step up to the expectations, or at the very least, put on a really good façade. The best leaders are leaders.

The traits of good business leaders I’ve had are so specific to being a leader in a business setting and the best and most rewarded subordinates around me have had totally mutually exclusive traits and I couldn’t see them transitioning to be leaders, in my experience.
In Japanese bad corporate world, middle management is blamed for destroying companies.
They do just enough to be safe in their positions.

Maybe not the hardest job skill-wise but it's a hard job psychologically because if you push the talent they'll hate you but if you don't push the talent the bosses will hate you.

I've been listening to Simon more and more as I try to figure out how things went so incredibly bad with my last job (I'm a nurse accused of insubordination for voicing safety concerns). I really started to feel like he could not relate in any way to the "common worker" but he's so famous. You nailed it. He says a lot about nothing of meaning. Thanks for this.

9:59... about "asking questions" that's perhaps one of the riskiest things you can do in many organizations which have a rigid power hierarchy. The reason Sinek could do it in his anecdote while surrounded by "C-levels" is that they were PAYING HIM HANDSOMELY as consultant outsider to actually "ask questions." It sounds all touchy-feely when he says it, but those warm-fuzzies are NOT intended for you, the worker, (unless you're watching Sinek on youtube and he's getting the clicks) they're intended for the suits who will pay BIG money to feel warm-fuzzies.
In reality, as a worker, you will NEVER have a seat in a conference room surrounded by C-levels who are there to listen to what you are saying. Your questions, if you dare ask them and they ever bubble to the top, will get filtered through a thick layer of stubborn incurious managers who are apt to shut you down or dismiss your question, or sometimes you. That said asking questions can absolutely be a noble and necessary thing to do. But first, make sure it's worth the risk because you are really sticking your neck out.
I can verify what you're saying. Now, my old company would bring the workers in... We did the whole Lean Manufacturing thing, with (at one point) monthly Kaisan meetings. A week-long show. They tolerate you giving your ideas, opinions, thoughts, etc, but they're immediately thrown into the circular file as soon as you walk out the door.

idk, I guess I get what you are saying but at least "start with why" helped me get a direction in my career, get in an industry and company aligned with my personal values and beliefs, and that way I was able to achieve more with less spent energy, and feel good about my work, and making work not feel like a drag. This in turn lead me to more career opportunities and I am more satisfied than I was at my past jobs, having more energy to spend outside my job.

My previous line manager was toxic af. I tried being empathetic but it affected my mental health terribly. I left, and joined another company, and it was the best thing I did. If I followed Simon then I would be digging myself a very early grave.

The majority of motivational speakers will make you think to blame yourself for not being successful despite there being outside factors and variables that contribute to success. This guy points out that there are things out of your control and it’s not your fault if you’re not successful, but tells you not to do anything about it. Just lie face down or grab your ankles and hope for the best.

I used to look up to Simon as well, but when I ACTUALLY became an actual manager, I started to realize the realities and complexities of managing people. In fact this is the same for all the management books (trust me I've read MANY of them) where they just give you positive sounding platitudes but not real methods.

I keep seeing people in my social media network sharing videos of Simon Sinek, and I always saw him as a self-help guru, with feel good messages but ultimately shallow. I couldn't quite put my finger on it and explain to the people in my network why I dislike Sinek, and why I don't think he's as wise as they think he is, but I'm glad I'm not the only one who sees it like this.
