So the Tata Nano costs about $4,850 USD. Dollar for Dollar it is still a pretty decent car for people on a limited income by Western standards. Dangerous at highway speeds isn't all that important if driven in cities and towns. Still a LOT safer than bicycles, scooters and mopeds. Pretty good little car in my opinion.
a suzuki celerio isn't that much more expensive and while I personally would have some doubts when it comes to safety I would actually agree to be a passenger in one for a short distance.

TATA NANO is the best car for those who are on a limited fixed income. I own a tata nano 2012LX and I have driven it for 320kms at a stretch. I got around 28kmpl without A/C and 26kmpl with A/C. All the parts are inexpensive. In fact I have a hard time maintaining my Royal Enfield Thunderbird 350. I prefer my nano over my motorcycle. ITS NOT AUTO RICKSHAW. DRIVE IT FIRST AND THEN COMMENT.
We own Tata Nano LX 2012. Covered 85000KMs. Still in good condidtion. My husband drive daily to office in Nano. Service cost is also less. Depends on how you drive for durability.

I have purchased Tata Nano Lx2012 in mojito green colour. After hearing somany negative comments before purchase about tata branded cars, i still have gone ahead due to its tall seating position. Today i can say my decision of going for nano is good and i have completed 83000kms in these 5years. I have not faced any problem as on today and it is very reliable and its body is also very strong. The person who has criticised me for taking nano has taken alto 800 and now today he is crying due to lack of space and due to its pathetic comfort levels. I have clocked most of these 83000kms on highways between hyderabad and visakapatnam. I have done several non stop rides between hyderabad and visakapatnam (except for fuel filling) which is around 640kms one way. My longest journey on nano is 1260kms in single day (driven day and night - Night driven by me ad entire day by my wife). And nano has completed this long with flying colours. After completing of 83000kms also my car is in perfect condition. I still want to keep it as even though i have swift car me and my wife prefers nano only for long rides because of its excellent seating which does not give any back pain after driving car for straight 10hours. So whoever say any thing negative about tata nano let them say, i have not come across any nano owner who disappointed with the purchase. After driving nano i have got more respect on Tata brand and if i want to go for any other car i will go again for a car in Tata brand or hyundai brand but i will never go for Maruti tin cans.

In Singapore, it would not have cleared safety clearance. Even if there was an exception made, the COE cost would be 8 times the car cost, making the purchase of the car meaningless and unprofitable.
I am from UK and bought 2013 Tata Nano for a run around whenever I visited India. I have owned many other luxury cars and I must say I love my Tata Nano in May 2015 I drove my Nano non stop for 20hrs (except for refuelling) from Goa to Ahmedabad. One day I plan to trade it in for a new one and drive it to UK.
I heard you can import it as a show car, you can't drive it beyond 5000 miles (or something) a year but you can get it no matter how strong the safety regulation is

People in the east have a really strange sense of pride and status. This car seems like a great idea compared to people stacking on top of a scooter. I think Ratan Tata is just too ahead of the curve. People are generally too simple creatures to appeal to reasoning sometimes.

One of the best cars in small car segment. Currently worth 3700$. Infact it is amazing. Average - 24km/litre. Can go anywhere. Total 5 people can sit including driver. Trust me my cousin sister owns 1. Best ACs in any cars...Tatas have this reputation...So quality of AC in Tata Nano is best. Steering is power steering. Top speed 110km/hr Infact it can easily climb hilly roads without any difficulty. Most underrated vehicle in small car segment. Best for City Roads. We can easily keep 2 bags at back.

Good for you! It is simple and inexpensive car, good mileage, air conditioning is very good. Many people in this country have a lot of money but there are many who do not, or want to have nice house, don’t care about a fancy car, and would rather save the money they have for travel or other things (sometimes just to eat well). Safety is important but motorcycles are common and legal here, anyone should see such a tiny car is less safe than a big one and it should be legal but regulations require us to buy heavier cars for safety that must have more power to move. Emissions on a car like this would be small at 50mpg, it is converting the energy of the fuel into power very well, but again with more emission regulations so we must buy more fuel to make oil companies rich.
Although a lot of thought went into the car, I still prefer the manual transmission! I like the 'happier face of the car, and the rear wheel drive! I don't know if thE bumps up the price from $2500 or not, but hope of it did, it is not by much. I like the whole concept of the car---- affordable transportation! Thank you!

If the technical team of Tata motors really want to receive the car, they should very critically go through all the reviews posted by the real owner's of the nano. I to have posted so many reviews in the early stages, but I still fear if the technical team has gonthrough those reviews.The responsible person's want them to hide themselves behind the cheap tag of the car which is not the real reason for the failure of the car. I once again want to stress the ponts I already said in my reviews.1.A slightly modification is needed inthe shape and size, specially on the rear side. 2..An openable tail gate with additional space for luggages, by decently bringing in the necessary changes in the rear shape,for example you can have the shape of zen estilo. 3.. Modification in the engine sound, which should sound more refined. 4..The fuel refilling opening to be relocated at a more convenient place on the left side above the rear wheel area, which is possible by adopting suggestion no 2by by improving the rear shape and size. 5.. battery capacity of the care may also be improved and shifted in side of the front bonnet. 6..

I had purchased tata nano AMT (gnex)petrol 2016 model)upto December I had no problem it was excellent car I was no even feeling tired after riding long distance but one day when I wanted to remove the car to park for my housing colony friend n reverse it n again to switch after half an hour it could not start so I thought to do some servicing also n informed tata nano authorised service centre at VERNA (Goa)so service consultant sent towing vehicle n I had to pay ₹2ooo then when I reached there. he kept my car outside the compound of workshop10/15 Mtrs away from workshop saying will do Diagnosis n let me know but after 15 days informed me that my car ACM is faulty after dismantlig many parts without informing me the the fault by OBD Scan which was his duty I also came to know that since the battery became week he pushed the vehicle to workshop from 15 Mtrs which he is not supposed to do as per vehicle Manual where in it is clearly written AMT vehicle should not be pushed as components get damaged in course. After some days he started phoning me to take back since ACM are not available as tata nano cars have been discontinued then I asked him you told me will inform me the fault but you called after dismantling some parts All AMT cars in my area are running in good condition still now I told n then the manager not telling that his fault for dismantlingn showing fault from computer numbers as shown by OBD Scan

I drove nano from amravati maharashtra to hyderabad 525 km average speed of 90 kmph was a great journey didn't gave any problem very good car. My nano is now 90000 km driven and not planning to sell i will atleat drive it 100000 km. 😉
I like 600 cc motors like the Nano, but I couldn't get it through NJ car inspection because of the emissions standards being 1/2 of 1970 emissions. Large polluting cars were easy to cut their emissions in half, but low pollution 600cc cars could not cut emissions in half and still run. It is horrible what the state did.
The problem with this car is 1) the price, if they had kept it in the mid range most snooty people would automatically assume its better ( more price means better car is the perception) 2) is the name, the name nano does not conjure up something sexy, it says something small and cheap. If they had done this from the start this would have sold much better. TATAs should have gone for profit instead of the good of people, indians never really appreciate that, if it sounds foreign then Indians automatically assume its good, basically, safedi ki chamkar is what is missing here.

Although a lot of thought went into the car, I still prefer the manual transmission! I like the 'happier face of the car, and the rear wheel drive! I don't know if thE bumps up the price from $2500 or not, but hope of it did, it is not by much. I like the whole concept of the car---- affordable transportation! Thank you!

If the technical team of Tata motors really want to receive the car, they should very critically go through all the reviews posted by the real owner's of the nano. I to have posted so many reviews in the early stages, but I still fear if the technical team has gonthrough those reviews.The responsible person's want them to hide themselves behind the cheap tag of the car which is not the real reason for the failure of the car. I once again want to stress the ponts I already said in my reviews.1.A slightly modification is needed inthe shape and size, specially on the rear side.
2..An openable tail gate with additional space for luggages, by decently bringing in the necessary changes in the rear shape,for example you can have the shape of zen estilo.
3.. Modification in the engine sound, which should sound more refined.
4..The fuel refilling opening to be relocated at a more convenient place on the left side above the rear wheel area, which is possible by adopting suggestion no 2by by improving the rear shape and size.
5.. battery capacity of the care may also be improved and shifted in side of the front bonnet.

This is a good little car. Does what you need it to do. I like it.

Ashish Masih did an excellent review. This seems like a huge improvement over the original design. The rear hatch was a much needed improvement, but I understand the need to keep the costs down. I am really seeing the fruits of their Horizon Next initiative.

I had purchased tata nano AMT (gnex)petrol 2016 model)upto December I had no problem it was excellent car I was no even feeling tired after riding long distance but one day when I wanted to remove the car to park for my housing colony friend n reverse it n again to switch after half an hour it could not start so I thought to do some servicing also n informed tata nano authorised service centre at VERNA (Goa)so service consultant sent towing vehicle n I had to pay ₹2ooo then when I reached there. he kept my car outside the compound of workshop10/15 Mtrs away from workshop saying will do Diagnosis n let me know but after 15 days informed me that my car ACM is faulty after dismantlig many parts without informing me the the fault by OBD Scan which was his duty I also came to know that since the battery became week he pushed the vehicle to workshop from 15 Mtrs which he is not supposed to do as per vehicle Manual where in it is clearly written AMT vehicle should not be pushed as components get damaged in course. After some days he started phoning me to take back since ACM are not available as tata nano cars have been discontinued then I asked him you told me will inform me the fault but you called after dismantling some parts All AMT cars in my area are running in good condition still now I told n then the manager not telling that his fault for dismantlingn showing fault from computer numbers as shown by OBD Scan

I drove nano from amravati maharashtra to hyderabad 525 km average speed of 90 kmph was a great journey didn't gave any problem very good car. My nano is now 90000 km driven and not planning to sell i will atleat drive it 100000 km. 😉

I like 600 cc motors like the Nano, but I couldn't get it through NJ car inspection because of the emissions standards being 1/2 of 1970 emissions. Large polluting cars were easy to cut their emissions in half, but low pollution 600cc cars could not cut emissions in half and still run. It is horrible what the state did.
The problem with this car is 1) the price, if they had kept it in the mid range most snooty people would automatically assume its better ( more price means better car is the perception) 2) is the name, the name nano does not conjure up something sexy, it says something small and cheap. If they had done this from the start this would have sold much better. TATAs should have gone for profit instead of the good of people, indians never really appreciate that, if it sounds foreign then Indians automatically assume its good, basically, safedi ki chamkar is what is missing here.
I would call it Tata Citystar. Because that's what I think about it.

Great little car, hopefully on its next upgrade it will get an airbag, ABS system and reinforced doors in order for it to start selling globally.
