Actually there is no feedback via the screen grid. The regenerative feedback is through l1 and l2, coupling the signal on the plate back into the grid. The regeneration control, r3 controls the gain of the valve by varying the dc screen grid voltage, and therefore sets the circuit to the point just below where oscillation would occur.
I worked on a Pye unit that had feedback from the primary of the output transformer. Clever set up but could stop the receiver from working IF a fault occurred and NOT just because of a fault with the output transformer going open circuit et 😗 It recycled part of the anode signal output through the circuit and grid assembly. Clever. One of the radios in my collection is a 8 band 8 valve Pye radio and complete work over, produced a set that family and friends still love to see / working et.
We all would love to see what you would come up with a project like this, knowing you, you would probably make your own Tubes hahaha. Merry Christmas Mr. C, and thank you for yet another year of amazing videos and sharing your knowledge with the world.
Hi Paul, thank you. the competition was better than I expected, I was surprised. I'm working my way through your latest video between Christmas functions. Merry Christmas Paul 🙂

I believe this is a vacuum tube radio? Damn it is built so well i would drop some money for it! Vintage vacuum tube radios are so rare these days!!! Thanks for sharing this video!👍👍👍
Watching you reverse engineer an old radio is like experiencing the obstacles the original designers had to overcome. Thank you for sharing that experience with us.
That turned out absolutely gorgeous. It was a joy watched the culmination of all the skills you've honed in the past videos come together. Congratulations, it was well deserved!
"Good enough" he says! "Good enough"?? It is unbelievably incredibly good, and well deserving of first prize! Well done David. You deserved that holiday...

Mr. Tipton, great work! The other radios were fine, but I agree with the judges - your radio was the complete package! Thank you for sharing your restorations, it is a pure joy when I get notified for a new release. I wish you and yours health, joy and love!
Thank you æther lab. Mine being self contained a ready to use is what got it over the line the judge said later. Thanks for watching and all the best for you and family for a much brighter 2021 🧨🧨😀

Hi David thanks for the reply. Well I am still working on the Hacker radio I mentioned a while ago. The initial set turned out to be a bit of a disaster with crumbling IF cores, stripped core supports, a faulty tuning cap that was beyond repair, and an FM board that refused to play. It was only fit for the bin! However yesterday I was given an identical chassis in much better condition so I am still hopeful. Not fit enough to get into the workshop at the moment (and it is far too cold - below zero deg C last night). But as soon as I am a little better the work will continue. Santa didn’t disappoint either, even brought me a new battery drill, and soldering iron! Take care young man. Keep up the good work. Best regards Lynton P.S. Don’t worry about the grammar, it’s only a note/comment. I have forgotten most of the rules of grammar anyway.👍🏻🤨🤣

Hey Dave. Nice radio entry! I'm an American chemical engineer in my 60's but not yet retired. I'm fascinated by your videos. Your skills for refinishing and fabrication with wood, metal and plastic are amazing. I enjoy your ingenuity and trouble shooting skills as well. Thanks for the knowledge and entertainment. I like it when you throw in an odd bit about life in Australia as I've never been there. Also, I'd love to see what your collection has grown to. I'd like to have a hobby like yours but it seems so much easier to watch you and others go through the trials and tribulations with me being electrocuted. It's odd because I've never even thought of old radios since about a few months ago.
Thanks Happy Hippo. I needed something to do in retirement and vintage radios seemed relatively cheap and encompassed the things I like doing. My collection is too big now I will need to shed some of the lesser value ones at some stage. I agree, it's better to watch me get electrocuted 😄
Congratulations, Dave! I never doubted one single moment you'd be the winner. But there were some serious contenders out there. Didn't know Australia had so many talented radio technicians. What a fantastic hobby you all have!
Most well deserved award and acknowledgement of your wonderful skills David. Looking forward to your next series of videos in 2022. Enjoy your ' sabatical', and all the very best, and many thanks for hours of enlightenment and entertainment! Pat & Emily, Bend, Oregon.
Hi Pat and Emily, thank you, I was most surprised when I won, the competition was pretty stiff. Thank you I am still producing content but hope at the moment and to get away for a break in 2022. I have some projects I want to get into in 2022 which I hope will be interesting. Thanks again, I hope you both have a great Christmas and all the best for 2022 in Bend, Oregon 🎄🙂
Wonderful radio design. I bought a regenerative shortwave radio kit as a boy and spent many hours in the evenings listening all over the world while carefully adjusting the regenerative knob!!
Thanks Ronald, those were the days when you would get lost in the spooky SW sounds at night and turn round quickly thinking something was behind you 👻👍🙂
never have I wanted to build an AM radio so badly, lol im reminded of the old science books I have from the 40s and 50s where i believe an AM radio is demonstrated as thing you could build yourself, the attention to detail is insane
I built such a radio when I was a teenager. It used a 80 rectifier tube so it could be plugged into an outlet. I purchased the parts from radio row in downtown Manhattan. It wasn't all that sensitive and would squawk loudly if the regeneration was turned up too high. Later I converted it into an AM transmitter using screen grid modulation. It worked well enough to transmit music quite a distance in a dead spot in the AM band using a window screen as an antenna.
A well-deserved win, David! Another Tiptonian masterpiece and a pleasure to watch! The editing and music is also perfect. You Sir, are an artist. Merry Christmas and a fantastic 2021!
Not sure how UA-cam figured out I would enjoy this but glad it did. I'm in no way educated in this outside of making an AM radio here in the U.S. as a kid with my dad. Thanks for sparking my interest!
Nice Project, Dave! I had an electronic trainer from Gilbert Toys back in 1958 that would let you build devices from a morse code trainer, to a shortwave radio. It used snap connector wires, with templates to help make circuit building somewhat easy. It used a germanium diode for detecting and a 1T4 for regeneration. I never really had enough cash at the time to buy an expensive 45 volt B battery to use the trainer to its full extent, but got many hours of pleasure using the projects I could build with it. Have a Great Christmas!!
Hi John, thank you. You can still get the project kits, I was looking at one for my grandson for Christmas but will wait till he is older. Of course they have transistors in them now. Thanks John, Merry Christmas 🎄🙂
I've watched quite a few DIY videos but I have to say this was one of the best. You used all your shop skills to build a great looking, functioning radio. Well done, I enjoyed every minute. 👍👀 Looks like a First Place kit to me!
Hi Dave, you are a fabulous craftsman, love your videos, I only wish we were neighbors so we could hang out and build, fix, and restore all kinds of stuff..!! After 40 yrs in the service business, and having taken a hiatus from it for 5 yrs, I've found a new love for the trade.
@@DavidTipton101 ...I'm sure you could show me couple things as well....especially with the lathe..... And BTW, congratulations on the win, forgot to mention that..!!😀
Hi David.. Wow!...I have watched many hundreds of hours of videos on YT over the years, but none of them has captured my attention like this one!.. As an 'old timer radio ham', this took me right back to me, as a twelve year old, excitedly putting together a handful of components to make a radio featured in the UK 'Practical Wireless' magazine. I'm not going to pretend that my finished products had any of the finesse of yours; in fact most of my radios didn't even have a case at all!....I seem to remember that I liked to see the valves glow!!..... I loved the chassis folding with the timber and the chunk of angle iron. ."Been there and done that", as they say.. What really took me back is when you switched it on....and there was nothing....That happened so many times all those years ago, and not usually with such a simple solution as with your radio.. Congratulations on your win and producing such a great looking radio.. I look forward to your next build....or even, just your next video.. Best wishes.. John.. G4EIJ.. Bristol..UK
Thanks John. I used to look in the back of our radios as a child and wonder how the warm glow of the valves and a collection of tin cans could make sound, I still do! I should get a tiny folder some day 🙄 Thanks for watching John and I'm happy you enjoy the video, all the best in Bristol 🍻🙂
.....that smell of warm dust you don’t get from solid state radios😊..Memories of the arguments I had with the wife when she had to drag me away from my transceiver at two in the morning☹️..Happy days😊 ‘Bring back valves’ I say😊Cheers..John..🍺🍺🍺
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! A fascinating video to end the year, and many congratulations on your win. And many thanks for your channel, which provided me with some of the most calming and enjoyable moments of a not very calming and enjoyable 2020.
Congratulations on winning 1st place in the contest. As always, you did a marvelous job of constructing this project. You are spot on about being part of a local club. I am a member of the Northwest Vintage Radio Society in Oregon, USA. They are a great bunch of folks. I no longer live in Oregon but I still attend virtual meetings. I thoroughly enjoy your videos and look forward to the next one.

That was just great David. I love how you put that together and it really shows your skills. Congrats with winning first price. Well deserved! Enjoy your holiday and all the best for 2021. Hope to see lots of your videos.
Congratulations on your win, I was hoping you’d win. I couldn’t help but think what you could’ve done with even more time and no rules holding you back, with that said the competition looked like great fun. I hope you have great fun on your time away, I’ll miss your videos, but I’ll just rewatch your old ones until you return. I don’t mind telling you I’ve watched your videos many times, I just find them peaceful and very enjoyable. Thank you for all your hard work and for taking us in for the journey as you learn. Your work is just top notch in my opinion, it’s not that you always have the answers right away, rather it’s the fun you’re clearly having and how you discover new ways of doing things and in turn that new knowledge helps make the next projects that much better. As I’m sure you can tell I like to carry on a bit, but since I enjoy your videos and work so much, and since it’s Christmas time I figure why not tell you your videos have been like a welcome friend in this rather dark and unfriendly year, they’ve been something to look forward to. From over here in Massachusetts, USA, A very Merry Christmas to you and yours. (As a side note, I’m kind of hoping you find some new radios to work on during your time away 😁😁)
Thank you holydado. I did have to cut some corners due to the time constraint, next time I'll start on it a bit earlier. We are looking forward to getting away, there have been a few cancelled trips this year so good we can travel again. Merry Christmas and all the best for 2021 in Massachusetts. I have no doubt I will find something to bring home with me 😄
Although I have no radio building or repair skills, I've always loved old radios and have several in my house which I use as speakers. I've enjoyed all your videos and found this one extremely enjoyable. It was great to see you going through the process and getting first prize for your efforts. Best wishes to you from West Cork, Ireland.
Hi Tony, thank you. I was very surprised when I won it, the other entries were really very good. We toured Cork and Ireland by car several years ago, it was a great trip in a beautiful country. Thanks and take care 🙂
Mr. Tipton, You have done an excellent job on this home built radio. this is unbelievable what you have built, I am going to get in to this kind of hobby, thank you kindly for helping me see what you can do, have a great day....
Hi Mark, thank you, the radio came up pretty good considering the time constraint I put on myself. I wish you all the best if you take up this as a hobby, it has been a great help to me in retirement 🙂
Wonderful! Great construction video and well done on the win, you had some great competition there, I don't know what got you over the line but I hope it was the case as I think that was brilliant!
Thank you Percy. I was told after the presentation that mine edged ahead because it could be turned on and used as it was, the others had conversion charts for the station dial or need some assembly, it was very close 🙂
Congratulations! That's a real credit to you, especially given the short amount of time you left yourself (I'd have taken 6 months to create something like that). You had some stiff competition there. All entries looked wonderful.
Thanks James, I will leave myself a bit more time this year 🙄 The other entries were great as well, I was most surprised at the level of them and I was very lucky to win 🙂
Wow there where some amazinglooking radios there, so much creativity, and such a nice "group of old farts" doing what they love doing; messing about with radios. Congratulations David, your radio does look like it was store-bought, excellent work!
I was very surprised at the quality of the other entrants, at least I know what to expect next time. It is mostly old farts so I fit right in but a very nice group of people. Thanks Vinny 🙂
So glad you discovered the only correct way to cut glass the clean way. Never try breaking the strip off on the side of the table by pushing in the middle. That always goes bad. The break should start at one side of the scratch and 'run' to the opposite side. Just put something onder the glass, like a pencil or a nail, or a match and gently push on both sides of the scratch. Piece of cake, well piece of glass, actually.
After seeing all the entries at the end, I believe all where winners in their own right. Not taking anything away from you David, you did exemplary work and attention to detail as always. Congratulations to you on you’re win. Please pass on my regards to you’re competitors for their efforts. All the best mate... 🍻
I totally agree with you Richard, the other entries were outstanding and I was very honoured to win against such stiff competition. Thanks Richard, all the best to you too 🍻😀
Congratulations! You did just great under the circumstances, and almost every part of the build was thoroughly explained. The many ideas you have given will truly boost the morale of any newbie to this wonderful hobby of radio electronics. 👏👏👏
Well done, a deserved win. Some of the others were no slouches either. So congratulations David, enjoy your time away and have a lovely holiday. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and may 2021 be a good year for you.
You have really out done yourself Dave making this radio from scratch and the cabinet as well. As always you are always a joy to watch. Congratulations on winning first prize the judges were definitely blown away by your radio. Merry Christmas to you and yours.
Definitely a master craftsman, beautiful work, and even though the other contestants made beautiful creations as well, you earned first place. Well done.
Nothing like waking up Christmas morning to one of your videos! Gorgeous build, and impressive performance. Merry Christmas to you and yours Dave, and a happy and healthy new year.
Wow you won the contest!!! There was some interesting competition there that would have made me think close but no cigar. It was a lot of details in your design that got the judges approval of the whole radio. Of course we all saw how much care , thought , and skill that went into building the Tipton Tune Master. Your chassis design and cabinet work is first class! Merry Christmas ! Steve
Brilliant Dave, congratulations a well deserved win and the competition deserves recognition too. You bring artistry to the hobby and are a great influence to your followers. Merry Christmas, enjoy your summer getaway.
Now that is what I call one exquisite looking; brilliant performing, and superb sounding home brew radio Dave. Although there was a whole load of stiff competition, in my humble opinion your entry was unparalleled. Some forty-nine years ago, I too constructed a TRF valve radio incorporating two EF91 RF pentodes. The circuit I used ...a circuit you might have seen too, was extracted (as I recall) from a late 1950s radio construction magazine. I constructed the radio to fulfil an end of college year examination practical assessment. Like your radio project, my radio project worked well too ...difference being, it incorporated a mains transformer, 2 x BY100 rectifiers, pi-filter resistor, and reservoir and smoothing electrolytic caps. Mercifully I was not expected to fabricate a dial, or construct a cabinet, but a written construction and circuit analysis report was required. That particular practical assessment criterion was to achieve above a threshold pass mark of 60% ...which I did! This video was certainly unusual in the sense I haven’t as yet discovered another radio construction/competition project here on UA-cam. What more can I say Dave beyond, “A professional looking job,” “Excellently executed,” and what I’ve already written? Best regards my friend, Phil
Hi Phil, thank you and seasons greetings to you. Your practical assessment radio sounds like fun although it probably wasn't at the time, the addition of the transformer added another level of difficulty. My assessments were all about developing hand skills, making small squares fit perfectly into larger squares or hand scraping 2 mini surface plates perfectly flat using Prussian blue, I would rather have made your radio 😀
Congratulations David from Ireland and Happy New Year to you and yours. Watching you build this radio, was like an hours therapy, thank you for sharing and all the best in 2021 :)

The regeneration control, r3 controls the gain of the valve by varying the dc screen grid voltage, and therefore sets the circuit to the point just below where oscillation would occur.

Thanks markpirateuk. Merry Christmas and New Year 😀
I've watched quite a few DIY videos but I have to say this was one of the best. You used all your shop skills to build a great looking, functioning radio. Well done, I enjoyed every minute. 👍👀 Looks like a First Place kit to me!
Hi Tim, thank you 👍🙂
Hey congratulations, David! What a nice radio build in such a short time!
Merry Christmas!
Thanks Rick, yes it was a little close 😄
Hi Dave, you are a fabulous craftsman, love your videos, I only wish we were neighbors so we could hang out and build, fix, and restore all kinds of stuff..!!
After 40 yrs in the service business, and having taken a hiatus from it for 5 yrs, I've found a new love for the trade.
That sound like fun Frank, you could teach me a lot. All the best 👍🙂
@@DavidTipton101 ...I'm sure you could show me couple things as well....especially with the lathe.....
And BTW, congratulations on the win, forgot to mention that..!!😀
Good for you David! Awesome work! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Thanks Ηλίας. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 🙂
Congratulations Dave....you are a true master! I refurbished a radio & now only receive one station with low volume.
Thanks Eugene. Good luck with your radio, hopefully you will get it going 🙂
Well done, David! As always, above and beyond! Bravo! Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and yours as well!
Thanks David, Merry Christmas and all the best for 2021 🙂
Thanks Dave, all the best to you and your family. It's been my pleasure and I have enjoyed it immensely. All the best for 2021 🙂
Congratulations on winning 1st place in the contest.
Thanks Rick. The radio club has filled a lot of holes since I retired so I'm with you on that. I'll try and get a new video out in a month or so 🙂
Dave that was an absolute masterpiece! Merry Christmas to you & yours! 🎅
Thanks James, Merry Christmas to you and your family also 🎄😀
My god that's a great radiology this is a amazing project and you are the great and I love the vintage radio's and television collection 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks Chetan 😀
That was just great David. I love how you put that together and it really shows your skills. Congrats with winning first price. Well deserved! Enjoy your holiday and all the best for 2021. Hope to see lots of your videos.
Hi Rene, I set myself a tight timeline for sure 😄 All the best for the season Rene 😀
I have no doubt I will find something to bring home with me 😄
I painted it black...
Couple minutes:
Paint it black plays on radio.
*PERFCTO*
Haha... good pick up _-_Michael-__ 😄
Your video content just get better and better. Thank you.
Thank you MyRandom Channel 😀
This was truly awesome David! You're an inspiration to the radio hobbyist for sure! Congrats and happy holidays!
Thanks Jeff, all the best for 2021 😀
Although I have no radio building or repair skills, I've always loved old radios and have several in my house which I use as speakers.
As always; brilliant piece of work! I always give you a *Thumbs-Up* before I watch the video!! I knew you'd win!
Haha... thanks pi-duino. I didn't quite share your optimism when I saw the other entries 😀
David Tipton your two valve radio Receiver you are building is cool
Thank you Greg 🙂
Merry Christmas to you and family from my family Safe New Year 2021 Nice work love it :0
Thank you ACHF and a happy and safe Christmas and New Year to you and your family 🎄🙂
Thanks 1959Berre, it was my first time, my Dad used to do it all the time but that was over 50 years ago. I was happy it worked the second time 😄
I was tempted to compete but I gave up when I saw David was in the race... (there is not a single true word in this. though)
Haha... thanks Λογος 😄
Forgot to add. Very classy and sympathetic build Dave.
Mark
Thank you Mark 🙂
After seeing all the entries at the end, I believe all where winners in their own right. Not taking anything away from you David, you did exemplary work and attention to detail as always. Congratulations to you on you’re win. Please pass on my regards to you’re competitors for their efforts. All the best mate... 🍻
I totally agree with you Richard, the other entries were outstanding and I was very honoured to win against such stiff competition. Thanks Richard, all the best to you too 🍻😀
Congrats Dave with a well functioning radio and an nice cabinet design! You earned the first prize, hands down! Have a happy 2021!
Thanks greengrayradio. Happy 2021 😀
Wow! That is simply outstanding work! Thank you for sharing your craftsmanship. You are an inspiration to all!
Thank you RadioJeff 😀
Congratulations! You did just great under the circumstances, and almost every part of the build was thoroughly explained. The many ideas you have given will truly boost the morale of any newbie to this wonderful hobby of radio electronics. 👏👏👏
Thank you very much Bharat 🙂
Well done, a deserved win. Some of the others were no slouches either. So congratulations David, enjoy your time away and have a lovely holiday. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and may 2021 be a good year for you.
Hi Bob, thank you. There was some stiff competition there, I was lucky to get the win. Thanks, Merry Christmas and all the best for 2021 🙂
You have really out done yourself Dave making this radio from scratch and the cabinet as well. As always you are always a joy to watch. Congratulations on winning first prize the judges were definitely blown away by your radio. Merry Christmas to you and yours.

Congratulations the master David and the inspirational Mrs. Tipton. Great job.
Haha... thanks Martin, she is inspirational 😀
That is what hapend when you have all the tools to work with, very good job congrats from Sweden.
Thank you Claes-Göran 😀
Definitely a master craftsman, beautiful work, and even though the other contestants made beautiful creations as well, you earned first place. Well done.
Thanks James. I think I won because mine was closer to the competition brief than the others.
if I could get half the results you do, I'd be happy. Thank you for sharing this with us
Thanks Andy, my pleasure 😀
Congratulations on your win, Dave. And the project looks spot on. Merry Christmas to You & Family.

Thanks Larry. All the best to you and your family for the holiday season 🙂
Awesome work Dave..........an honourable mention to the one with the Perspex bottom.....that loom work was fantastic too
Thanks Harb, I agree the loom work was excellent 👍🙂
Wow you won the contest!!! There was some interesting competition there that would have made me think close but no cigar. It was a lot of details in your design
that got the judges approval of the whole radio. Of course we all saw how much care , thought , and skill that went into building the Tipton Tune Master.
Your chassis design and cabinet work is first class! Merry Christmas ! Steve
Hi Steve, thank you. The other entrants were outstanding, I would struggle to pick a winner too. All the best for the season and 2021 😀
Brilliant Dave, congratulations a well deserved win and the competition deserves recognition too.
You bring artistry to the hobby and are a great influence to your followers. Merry Christmas, enjoy your summer getaway.
Thanks Mack, Merry Christmas 🎄😀

Very well done, David. A deserved result against some tough competition. Best wishes from the UK for 2021.
Thanks Edward for the UK. All the best for 2021 😀
Awesome just awesome. What a great thing to have a club and great bunch of folks local to you also.
Yes, great club with great members. thanks murrij 🙂
Thanks Michael in Ireland. All the best for 2021 😀
