A Classic NZ Winter Camping Experience - just my dog and I
Вставка
- Опубліковано 30 вер 2024
- Have you ever wanted to have an entire camping ground to yourself? My dog Indi and I headed out to Wooded Gully, in the South Island of New Zealand on a stormy winter afternoon, in search of just that. This classic Kiwi unserviced camping ground is tucked away at the base of Mt Thomas and a favourite for hikers and campers, but we got the whole place to ourselves. Join us for the setting up of camp, a walk through the bush, along a local track, relaxing with a cup of tea and a book, camp cooking, and breakfast alongside a river. We hope you will enjoy coming away camping with us, and get a feel for New Zealand camping.

I loved the sound of the birds throughout the video!
Thanks David. They were a delight
Another awesome video have been camping at Wooded galley before and was fortunate to have it Myself for four days in mid winter. Gorse fact my surname is Furze which is a Scottish name for gorse and also whin, my mum when she sees gorse anywhere she jokes saying oh look there's a family photo 😂
Great mum joke that one, he he. That is great that you got a full four days of the camping ground to yourself. There were 6 cars in the carpark as I left, but all day hikers by the looks of things. Not a soul there over night. Was nice.
Bet Indies thinking "Every step you take, every move you make, every bite you eat, I'll be watching you" She's beautiful. Enjoy 🍻 and happy camping trips.
Spot on Denise. Thanks so much.
Hi from Australia. Loved the vlog must do a trip to NZ. Keep up the good work…
Thanks Andrew. I appreciate the support.
Cathy I enjoyed your kōrero about the introduced gorse and broom… we do have an interesting bio network of flora and fauna…we have known about 25 yrs we still have surviving a plant that evolved with the fern before flowers. It is one of the most endangered plant species on the planet only 16 plants in the world, scientists have tried to germinate the plant no luck yet. I cried to be able to see these plants and touch them they are held in a secret secured facility.
It's a magical place this world, isn't it?! and we live in a very special part of it that is so worth protecting. Thanks Alaine. Cathy
So pleased you have put another video up. We all look so forward to them.
Thanks so much Annie. I appreciate your support.
Bird sound was good on this with wind sound in the trees.
Your voice is stabilising and like you showing enjoying naughty food (cakes and beer). That’s what people want to see. Kent survival does this and massive following. Don’t be healthy with the food on camping trips as it isn’t as enjoyable 😊❤.
Haha, love it. Well I will certainly use that as an excuse to indulge in the occasional sweet treat or beverage. As for completely unhealthy camp eating..... eeek, then it wouldn't be enjoyable for me. Dilema. I think I will have to win that one and eat well with the occasional treat.
I'm looking forward to the ultralight camp with the tiny tarp setup. Always looking for tips on ultralight
That's great, thanks for letting me know. Good to know there is interest in that. I am no pro at ultralight camping, but I need to do more, ha ha, there is only so much heavy lifting one can do. I am looking forward to a light trip where I can go further with more ease.
Loved this camp. You deserve to shout yourself some new tent pegs.
Thanks. I think I had better, those ones are looking more like artistic metal sculptures than pegs.
@adventureot We got some pegs with kinks in like giant Bobby pins. They held the pin in the ground better in the wind. NZ can get a bit breezy even in summer. Your love of camping during storms makes for exciting videos but might need the peg upgrade.
Hello Cathy and gorgeous Indy .Its a horrible feeling when you call your dog and they don't come back straight away especially here is Australia bush ,where Iam they have 1080 poison bates to combat feral cats and dogs ,which can take a devastating toll on native wild live here ,we also have to be on alert for venomous snakes and there are 54 species here in West Aus .as bad as it sounds we have never seen any in the many years we have gone camping 🙏your so lucky not to have any snakes or dangerous animals in NZ .I would have to say that would have to be the most relaxing camping trip comfortable ,nice weather next to water and the beautiful sounds of the birds ,MY favourite is the Bell Bird .M girl Willow had her Indy fix she still dosent understand that she isnt in our backyard ,she honestly racers outside looking for her ,my other dog im sure thinks she is Mad🙄🤣 I liked you Tent and love your 4x4 im crazy over 4x4s i have one but its giving me problems unfortunately 🥴Any who thankyou so much for the efforts you put in for us sending love and Blessings🥰🙏💫
Thanks Vanetta, sorry about the late reply. I always leave the longer comments till I have time to give a well thought out response, and I have been rushing around like a mad woman lately. 1080, yes, we have it here too. I like to think Indi wouldn't eat anything random, but that is naive, so I keep a close eye on her. I used to live in South Africa and snakes were a big concern there. I remember standing on a Berg Adder as a child and getting the fright of my life. Luckily for me it was early morning and it was too cold to respond as quickly as I did. I was gone in a flash. Thanks for the ongoing support. You are awesome. Have a fab week. Cathy
Hi great content I only just subscribed today as I've never seen your page I watch a lot of these videos but the New Zealand video are great.
Welcome. Thanks so much Gareth.
Awesome. Love the tent. Cheers from here in the Rockies Thx for taking the time.
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks so much.
Hi Cathy, Indi hat wohl zu Beginn die Abenteuerlust gepackt. Danke für das Video. Es hat mir wieder beim entspannen geholfen.
Yes you are so right, she was bursting to get out and explore. So much to sniff and so many places to go. It was all a bit too exciting for her.
👍👍👍 .. nice, very nice 😊.
Indi .. a 'Pampered Pooch Prone on the Front Porch' .. as it should be.
'Long Drops' .. par for the course at many rural RSA Camp Sites. My little Malti-Poo "sit .. wait" outside 🤨. Nope, she has to be present to ensure evverifing is dun rite 😏.
Smoked Salmon .. yum. Here in Switzerland, only when on 'half-price special'. The little Kiwi I saw 'going under the knife' .. sold per unit and at prices 😳 that my keyboard refuses to replicate 😁.
Mid-week off-season outings .. a privilege, when on offer, to be snapped up and appreciated 😊. No rain .. the bonus comes during the packing up to go and later, at home, the hauling out and prep to put away for next time.
Nice outing .. always a pleasure to watch them. Thanks Cathy, for taking us with and am looking forward to the next.
Until then, take care .. Tommy
Thanks Tommy. Oh yes, salmon prices, yikes. I must have been feeling extravagant, ha ha. Such a nice treat though, for me and Indi (salmon skin is always hers, and then much licking of the chops occurs).
G'day, Hi Cathy just heard a Big Cold front due in NZ on Monday! That tent brought back memories, had something like it when I took my kids car camping. Now they are fighting over who gets my camping gear first to go off with mates & girlfriends/boyfriends camping.😂 My daughter was upset she had to buy a pump because her brother had mine already.
So glad they are enjoying the outdoors.
Ahhh family camping. Fun and games hey. You have given them a real gift by introducing them to a love of the outdoors. Yes, as a read this the first drops of rain are just starting to fall, and it is due to get very chilly.
I Love your video`s. Especially the ones with Indi. I`m sure i have told you already, and some are probably getting sick of it. My Yorkie Shiztzu who was with me for just about 14 years. Longer than my marriage. Died March 6th in my arms on the way to the vets. I have since been blessed with another friend who unfortunately came from an abusive place. She was skin and bones when i got her. People compliment me daily on how well she looks now. My worry is. When i think about my Marshmallow, I cry. Morgan seems to sense that. Am I hurting her with my feelings É
Your new pooch is lucky to have you! 🥰
Enjoyed this video, what's the tent called? Squinted and saw Zempire (Freedom Camping) but no model. It's YUGE!
Hi there. The model is Neo 6. I am not sure if it is a current model or has been replaced by something else now. It is a very well made and functional tent. I like it.
I was waiting all week for this! Another great one. Your food and drink selections make my mouth water. Yummmmmmmmmmm n thanks.
My pleasure 😊 glad you enjoyed it. Food is SO important on a camp. You have to get it right, lol.
@adventureot The times you record just the sounds of the forrest, or whatever surroundings you're camping in is amazing. The rushing water, the birds singing and twittering, (most of which I don't know), rain on your setup, all are relaxing. Wish I could take my tent down and pack up gear as fast as you do!
Thanks. I'll remember that and try and include more of it. That is what i enjoy in similar videos too.
Which book are you reading, Cathy? Always curious about that;) Love the recommendation from someone i admire:) Thanks in advance
Hi. That is so nice, thank you. I am reading 'The Alice Network'. Sorry I forget who the author is. I am only 1/3rd through it (super slow reader), but it is very engaging. So far I recommend it. If it falls apart and bombs out I will be back to take that recommendation back, lol.
Hiya Cathy & Indi 👋
Loved the Vid👍
Great work as always👏
Indi-😍😘♥️💯
Till then ✌️ 😎
Thanks Vivian 😀
Just found your channel, instant sub! Showed the mrs your tent putting up skills.😂😂
Wonderful, thank Jerry!! But oh dear, what have I done? Raising the expectations on my fellow camping ladies. ha ha.
Have always had dogs but always tied up or on leash at camp. I think people just don't want to clean up after them. Not responsible.
It seems crazy, doesn't it, that people don't clean up after their dogs. I think a poop bag is the most common thing you'll find in my jacket pockets, lol.
Love the adventure; but how did you stay warm overnight? I'll be freezing
Thanks Vincent. My winter sleeping bag and the thermolite reactor sleeping bag liner are so warm! Plus I sleep with my down jacket on and wool pants.
Just nuturing nature right along .🐾🐾🐾
Thanks
It was awesome. But I notice indi had something with his leg. The fur was shave off. Just concern about indi
That is sweet of you to be concerned. Indi had a small surgery about a year ago, to cut out a lump. She is 100% fine. Her fur just hasn't grown back well over that patch.
Feed your dog!!!!! He is your companion on this trip and needs you to share with him!!!!!!
Indi is an adored and well cared for dog. If you don’t see her eating it’s not because she is not eating, but because I have to cut 24 hours of activity down to 45minutes and I can’t include everything.
you where looking for a saw Agawa saw and axes ,in ontario Canada nice stock . By By good camping.
Lovely, thank you. A lot of people seem to think highly of them.
I love your camps Cathy… enjoy it too wen Indie can join you thanku for the time n energy you put in to bring us sum cool camp sites
You are so welcome. I know how much people enjoy Indi's presence so I try my best to bring her along if I can.
Loved the vid, good on you, independent woman, bless you.❤
Thank you so much!
From West Chester, OH - Thank You Kathy & Indi for showing us this NZ Dept of Conservation camp site. From this side of the camera, I like your new tent. P.S. Our indoor cycling group have started to absorb historical fiction in our “book club” selections. It just so happens we’re reading “The Alice Network” by Kate Quinn at the same time as you 📚
Oh that is so funny, we are reading it at the same time. I am in a bookclub too. I am a very slow reader, so this makes me get a wriggle on and finish books.
@@adventureot Kate Quinn's novels are Historical Fiction which makes them so interesting
Lovely camping set up. You and Indi looked so comfy cozy. On your morning coffee walk the birds were singing their little hearts out.
The birds were so enthusiastic. Hard not to be in a great mood with them around.
I just want snuggle with Indi on her bean bag 😊
Very well pitched tent… 👌 Subscribed 👍
Thank you (chuffed grin).
Another great relaxing vid. Thank you! Just wondering what tent that is?
Thanks Aaron. This is the Freedom Zempire Neo 6. You can pick these up relatively cheaply second hand. I like it. A nice tent. The awning design is not great in the rain as it pools, and you have to pull the 'sunroom' (lol) back away from the opening or rain comes in onto the bathtub floor. But otherwise I like it. Well made.
@@adventureot Thanks!
Love you still waching BEUTIFULL soul
Thanks so much ☺️
@adventureot hope to see you one day never know.i did meet Tony in nevada got his autograph at the hover dame.what a nice man big fan I got lucky
Your welcome 🙏 you calm me down, love indie you to great for this world
How old is indy she is so sweet enjoy ❤❤❤❤
Indi is 7 years old. Thank you.
Beautiful campsites. ..so peaceful in nature ❤...lots of ❤ from india....i had to ask my friends to subscribe to ur channel🎉
Awesome! Thank you!
That's why there is lease law's!
Ray I am guessing you mean so that dogs don't wander off like Indi did. Yip, for sure. If they are not sitting under your nose or tied up, or in the car, you don't know what they could be getting up to hey.
Awesome tent u have
Yes, I am very happy with it. I got it second hand for a bargain, so that is all the better!!
Longest and flimsiest poles I've ever seen. Shittiest pegs. Cutest hound ;) Great post, as always. Thanks.
yes all of the above
❤from Tennessee
Thanks
Hi Cathy. I was only there last week (midweek) with my dog.. Loved it. Ha, what a coincidence. Keep up the great work. Love your vids, tks.
Ha ha, crazy. It's a lovely spot and so accessible.
❤ may’be one day i will visit NZ, it’s a dream but watching your channel makes my dream come true.
Thanks Cathy and Indi
It's a long way away for a lot of people, but hopefully you can make it here one day. I am glad I can share it with you in the mean time.
I love seeing the bond you have with Indi, you can tell how much she loves you. Such a wonderful companion.
Thank you for another great video, I felt relaxed just watching you guys ❤
Thanks so much!
What a wonderful video! Thank you for the camera time you gave to Indi! She’s so sweet and adorable! ❤
Thanks Chris.
Looked like the sort of location and camp set up that could tempt you to stay a few nights. (and scoring it with no other campers was a bonus too) Indi was obviously enjoying herself with the lovely conditions, cosy bedding and almost endless fetch games. Thank you again for sharing your experiences with us Cathy.
Thanks Rosie. It was a lovely relaxing time. If home life wasn't calling I would have loved to have stayed another night and just read and slept (and thrown more sticks, lol).
You’ve won me……you care for your dog, your companion. She’s beautiful. 😅
Thank you Ronald.
Hello Cathy, another wonderful camp love the country side so beautiful and peaceful well you and indi stay safe out there until next time love from America ❤️
Thanks Wallace.
Thanks!
Thank you SO much Louie.
🙂
Thanks
have a nice day ❤
Thanks you. You too!
Hi, Cathy, fantastic, great tent, the weather over here is getting warmer, so I'll be off motocamping soon, my old bones and old injuries don't like the really cold. Salmon, avo and olives on watercrackers, mmmmm one of my go to comfy snacks. Do u have an email, I'd just like to chat re: all things camping please. Really enjoy the serenity u project in ur vlogs, and Indy has got my heart, I'm glad I've got a big one, because I've given it to all my animal friends. Thanks for sharing 🇦🇺 respect.
Indi is pretty easy to love isn't she?! Such a loyal and loving dog. A delight to hang out with. The funny thing when you love animals is your heart just grows in capacity the more you get. That way you can just keep loving them all. My channel email is in my channel detail info. Feel free to drop me a line. Just promise me you won't be offended if it takes me longer to reply to than the comments in the comments section. I make a point of only checking it a couple of times a week, otherwise things can get overwhelming.
@@adventureot Thanks Cathy, totally understand about time constraints, all good. I actually just lost my 17yr old best mate, Idgy Myra (Chihuahua) and I'm really struggling with life right now, I'm sure u get where I'm coming from, but ur vlogs and Indi and my other 5 fur babies are there for me, thanks😭
Awhhhh mate, that is rough. I am sorry to hear that.
@@adventureot💔
Another lovely video 🥰
Thank you! 🤗
Hi sweet Indi girl!
Hello Jean 😊
You’re well overdue for a camping trip like this, no severe weather no strange surprises no unruly neighbors. Just a nice fun camping trip.
So true, so true Claude. Ironically the threat of a thunderstorm probably scared other campers off, I came out, then there was no thunderstorm and I got to relax in peace. It worked out well.
Che meraviglia lontano da tutto e tutti tu e il tuo cane migliore la sua compagnia
Yes, great company, and the simple life.
What's the Alice Network like?
I'm not far in but so far so good. I'll try and come back to this comment in a few days and update it with something more intelligent, lol.
@@adventureot cool! I'm a keen reader. Just finished The Book Of Fame by Lloyd Jones (All Black tour) Brilliant
Oh cool. I just looked it up and it sounds like a great read. Thanks. Horse, by Geraldine Brooks is fantastic. Loved that.
❤
Thanks Sunnidazed
Great video as usual 🏕️
I’ve just bought the zempire monstamat her in the uk, haven’t tried it yet off camping in 2 weeks with my son, hoping they’re comfortable to sleep on
Hey Mark. Thank you. I find it really comfortable for a camping mat (i.e. I don't expect ultra luxury). I go to sleep and next thing it is morning, so it does the job well. I hope you and your son have a wonderful time away.
