Sex Determination: More Complicated Than You Thought
Вставка

- From something as small and complex as a chromosome to something as seemingly simple as the weather, sex determination systems vary significantly across the animal kingdom. Biologist and teacher Aaron Reedy shows us the amazing differences between species when it comes to determination of gender.

So as global warming speed up, will all turtles be female?
Global warming would have to cause a much faster temperature shift to show any definitive shift balance of sexes for painted turtles. Not only that, turtles could use behavioral adaptation to choose underground nests that are much cooler to produce more males.
No
this came out in a test, where the question asked how global warming can affect the population of turtles

2:46 it's important to know that haploid does NOT mean the DNA is single stranded ! This is absolutely wrong.
Haploid means there are no homolog chromosomes. DNA itself still is double stranded.
ok so i liked your comment because it sounds smart even thiough i dont understand it so dont explain please and thank you
@@crabeatcrab6011 I love you
@Sofia Hurtado diploid cells have 2 two copies of their genom with different versions of the same genes, so calles alleles. A chromosome contains one or two identical dopple strands of DNA. Two Chromosome creat a homologous pair. These two chromosomes have similar sequences but can differe, they have the same genes but different versions of it. The diploid cells of a multicellular organism have the same Genome in every cell, which just a few exceptions.
thanks for pointing this out! however I think the image was just to serve as a visual aid and not imply it was actually single stringed, but I could def be misleading!

and then how did lizards evolve and how they didnt got wipeed out by disease?
Natural evolution, if something change then gens do to.
Confy lizard I have heard about them and apparently they are traped on an island and there where males but the species almost went extinct and all that was left was female capable of cloning.
Cloning can be an imperfect process, which means mutations (some of which may be beneficial) can occur... but it is at a much slower rate than species who jumble their genes via sex. It is a risky strategy for a species to take, but it does allow for some degree of variation.
Short answer is it hasnt happened yet, but there's no guarantee it would ever happen either. Statistics mean they are more likely to not have genetic resistance in their population, not that they are more vulnerable. Clones are all the same, but not all diseases are deadly either. Kind of like how humans have almost no genetic resistance to HIV (a few might), but there are enough of us around that one Might mutate in some way that prevents infection or spread, or deadliness, or anything that could help. If we mutate, we can pass it on, and clones have to inherit it, but we can mix it up mutayions through chromosome crossover, but they go one mutation at a time.
How did amoebas evolve, how didn't they get wiped out...
Just like that...
Next topic!
How does queen choosen on ant's\bee' colony ?
Larva that was chosen to be the queen was feed royal jelly, which makes it grow up into a queen. At least for bees
Oh the ending is so sweet ❤️ I know I’m late but congratulations!
This was entertaining, informational, and easy to follow. I was hesitant to click on this video because I didn't really understand what it was about, but it was the featured video on everything I clicked on so I decided to click on it and I'm glad I did. You learn something new everyday! And congratulations on your baby boy! :)
Of course, it's even more complicated than that. Not all species are sexually dimorphic. Certain lizards, as you pointed out, undergo parthenogenesis. If such a lizard were able to speak, the word "gender" would have no meaning to it. Certain fungi have thousands of genders. Gender is a somewhat arbitrary evolutionary construct: even among humans, and this is my main point, we have other - biologically verifiable - variants to the male-female system. A transgender person's brain anatomy, for example, is much closer to that of their (so-called) biological gender (i.e. a transgender female has brain chemistry much more similar to that of a "biological" female than she does to a male).
Also, the chance is not 50/50, especially at a zygotic level. Conception produces somewhere between 25-50% more male zygotes (some research indicates this may be the result of glucose levels in utero: see DOI: 10.1098/rspb.2004.2773). Male zygotes are more likely to fall prey to miscarriage and stillbirth, but at birth the ratio is still higher - roughly 106 boys for every 100 girls. Males are much more likely to fall prey to violence after birth, as well: think of the all-male drafts implemented in times of war or the "save the women and children first" mentality, which (I would hypothesize) has its groundings in strict evolutionary psychology. Environmental conditions also affect this: males are, biologically speaking, a riskier proposition because they have to compete for mating rights whereas females are all but guaranteed the chance at reproduction. Thus, in bad environmental conditions - i.e. not enough food (low glucose) and so on - the parents stand a greater chance at passing on their genes if they have a girl. However, males are favored in good environmental conditions because they have a better chance of copulating with multiple females (the males' act does not require a long gestation period). Ergo, they are a riskier proposition, but one worth taking, which is likely why at sexual maturity the ratio of males to females is roughly equal.
in humans gender is not fluid!
samuel rodriguez Why?
+Mikkel D. Watch the video. You are either XX or XY. There's no in between. Gender identity is largely defined by culture, not biology.
@@samuelrodriguez9801 read my comment above regarding the biological gender
A long time ago this was actually my first ted video and I hadn't yet realized it though
Your explanation is really awesome than in school
Congratulations on the baby boy.
I've read that the chances of having a boy or girl are more like 51/49, due to the slightly smaller sperm head of the Y sperm (Y chromosomes are smaller than X chromosomes, so the sperm head is smaller for Y than for X). The smaller sized head makes it easier and faster for the Y sperm to reach the egg than for the X sperm.

The quality and extent of that integration depends on the 1. neuroplasticity of your brain (which depends on how often you learn new things- it can be trained) and 2. the amount of pre-existing structures which are easily relateable to the newly aquired information.
There are advantages and disadvantages. Obviously, they cannot evolve and adapt as quickly as sexually reproducing lizards, but they can quickly populate a new area with just one lizard. It's interesting to see how differently some lizards have evolved from others, and why they did so. Somewhere along the way, it worked out better for them.
