Excellent review Alan. I wasn't aware of the LED glow up until you pointed it out. Though, I think that maybe stickers on top of the buttons could help? I have no idea as mine is still without stickers. Also, much appreciated that you covered the compatibility with Fanatec ecosystem in depth. It is going to clear a lot of doubts. And one other thing is that I loved the macro shots😄 Keep up the great work!
Thanks Darth - I think all of us respond differently to different aspects of these products so it's always interesting to watch others' perspectives. When I get my own GT Neo in 1-2 months I might try the button stickers... Honestly, I'm very resistant to the idea hahaha.
Thank you so much! There's always some level of uncertainty when producing these videos and it helps a lot to receive feedback. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Hello. I am very picky about everything. But I have only positive things to say about your review here. You clearly have talent. You are clear and serious and honest. You don't overplay like many unfortunately do. So I will follow you and see more of you. Hello from Sweden.
Thank you Stuart, I'm a bit of perfectionist and I get hung up on every little detail that doesn't quite match my vision, but overall I think I'm able to produce videos that look interesting. I really appreciate your support, thank you!
Id be a little wary to use that usb-c connection in lieu of that mag link that’s designed to protect the wheel from the wire getting tugged but it is interesting that you can get around using their solution.
I agree, it's not my preferred solution but at the time of filming there was no Maglink stock in Australia so I had to do what I could. Worst case you damage the USB C connector that you replace anyway when you switch to Maglink so I see it as minimal risk
Gt neo is absolutely fantastic but i think fanatec is downplayed when i compre the f1 2.5x to this the f1 2.5x still feels as quality. It feels super dense and quality. The neo is just more fancy and looks amazing. I like both and use both on my dd+ now. Also they are the same size as eachother lol. Also i dont agree with the construction i have 0 creaking and 0 flex on my v2.5x. Both feel as strong as eachother. Comparing the v2.5 is much better to do becuase it connects there is no spacing below the handles. So they are connected like the neo. Only way to truely compare those designs. So yeah no flex on mine the neo feels as quality but looks cooler.
Hey man, I actually have a V2 (Xbox rim) in the studio next to my V2 (blue F1 PlayStation rim) and the closed bottom full carbon plate makes a big difference. The closed bottom rim is pretty stiff, but I stand by my assessment of the open bottom rim flexing. Plus there's a clear design flaw in the plastic grips because they break on both rims in the same locations (where the rear grip meets the centre hub, and the little fingers for screw mounting) But hang on just one more week I have a pretty interesting video coming for Fanatec Formula wheel owners ;)
@DrAlanQuan plastic grips? Wait what? I have the Alcantara but yeah. And usually it's rubber. Idk I still just haven't found any weakness. I've actually heard peoppe talk about flex on the neo before I don't have any luckily but my 2.5x is fantastic and doesn't either it feels like a tank to me. But maybe it's just my expereince. We all can only go by what we experience so makes sense. I def don't think you are wrong or lieing I just am not experiencing the same thing. When I hold both wheels I feel quality equally. But the flare of the neo edges it out and makes the mind think quality a little more I guess?
@@reviewforthetube6485 when you take off the grips on the Fanatec rim you'll see the Alcantara is glued over a hollow injection moulded plastic case which has a soft touch rubber coating on the outside. And there's obvious weak points that break over time (I've seen it on a number of wheels with my own eyes and also people have shown photos online) Thanks for pointing out that you don't think I'm lying, but that your experience is different to mine - I really appreciate that! I do want to point out that although I'm quite critical of the Fanatec rim I did enjoy driving with it for 3 years, but there are still obvious and unaddressed issues in what is quite an old design at this point that continues to be sold, just with new colours to keep things fresh. Thanks for chatting, I hope to see you in the comments section in a week a so when the new video gets released!
I received mine last week. And I am really happy with it! The only downside: The rubber finish is peeling off already. Maybe because of the material of my racing gloves. But other than that there is nothing I can complain so far. Great device.
Glad to hear you're enjoying it! I'm curious to see how my own unit does in terms of wear and tear. Mine still hasn't arrived, I'm too far back in line hahaha
Nice review, just got mine 4 weeks, sooo more rigid than previous wheel, Fanatec mcLaren with plastic QR on CSW2.5. The plastic rotary knobs is only cost saving, i feel would benefit from upgrade , me racing barehands. Also liked that the alpha mini gave me small bruise on the hand, when i stupidly let go of the wheel after a lost slide
Another great video Alan :) I was just about to pull the pin on a Fanatec setup..... but now you have me thinking again!!!! LOL (the Sigma Cortex Converter has also just come out with a new software version, so it's now improved PS5 game play as well). Cheers Don, Perth WA (Dons Shed and Xplor Overland)
Thanks Don, I'm probably not doing much to build my relationship with Fanatec to create content together lol but I have to speak my truth and for the time being, I see little value in spending money with Fanatec. I really hope they pick things up, because I'm sure they can put a good product together but until they consistently produce happy customers I remain very wary of recommending them. I don't have first hand experience with PS5 or the Sigma Cortex but I would 100% buy Simagic+Sigma instead of Fanatec if I were in your shoes today.
@@glenndjenkins I can only use Fanatec or Simagic/Sigma Cortex as I only play on PS5...... unless you know of any other brands that work with PS5? (other than Logitech or Thrustmaster)
I bought a Podium DD1 setup with GT and round wheels last November to go with my Clubsport pedals and shifter. Unfortunately it took five months to arrive, then the DD1 base immediately began disconnecting after an hour or so before ultimately not even booting properly despite firmware reflashes and various driver versions being tried on several computers. Eventually stuck in the infamous WQR flash mode with a fully unresponsive base and flash utility unable to complete the flash. The complete silence of Fanatec customer service speaks volumes, and I get the feeling that they're in a death spiral. Perhaps borne out by the CEO being forced out by their bank to allow them to extend their loan facility. Incredibly sad to see a once groundbreaking company fall off the wagon. But when Moza, Simagic, Simucube etc are outclassing them on price and quality - with better customer support - it's time to move on.
Hi Christopher, I'm sorry that you had that experience. I want Fanatec to succeed, and I've had overall good experience with their products and service in Australia - although the broken wheel grips were a surprise to me. I've seen the writing on the wall for Fanatec for years now starting with the QR2 announcement which took years to make good on - and been watching eagerly hoping to see them do well, but seeing the preorder nonsense that has left so many customers dissatisfied being a consistent issue for Fanatec for YEARS has been disappointing, and seeing people enthusiastically ordering their products has been like watching a train crash in slow motion, just knowing the outcome but being powerless to stop it. Until Fanatec demonstrate that they can develop and bring innovative products to market AND get them into customers' hands without underhanded marketing strategies - I can't recommend anybody spend money with them when so many compelling alternatives exist. And I am very much looking forward to my GT Neo arriving
The new studio has presented so many challenges! The lighting and acoustics still need more dialling in, but the new 3D printer as well as the additional content partners has given a lot of personality to the wall :) Thanks for your support!
Totally agree on the closed bottom on the hand grips. No idea why do many companies use an open bottom that then has flex. And forget the Podium hub. Use an SRM emulator or a Leoxz qr2 core quick release.
I looked into the SRM and by the time that I factor in shipping and a QR1 it costs the same as a podium hub and at least with the podium hub I get some easy DIY project options for shifters and buttons. That's what I was thinking when I got the podium hub anyway.
Hi Alan. I know you make 3D printed rims for Fanatec wheels. Any plans to make rims for the GT Neo? The wheel is too long for my liking. A 3D printed 280 mm rim would be perfect. Even 290 mm would be just fine. I'm used to Fanatec's formula wheels where most of them are 270 mm wide and they're the only wheels I ever touched. I'm asking because I'm thinking of upgrading to Simagic.
Hi, no plans to mod the GT Neo. As somebody who quite liked the Formula V2 at 270mm - the GT Neo is absolutely perfect. The feel of the grips, the 300mm width - it's just perfect and doesn't need any mods. I designed my grips to copy the GT Neo because it's so comfortable. Upgrade with confidence, my friend
IF i understood it right, the maglink isnt mandatory to use it whit and 3rd party wheelbase, yet its more stable and safer than the standart usb c connection
Yes that's my understanding as well. Maglink is just a USB cable with a different plug - so whether you use Maglink or USB C the wheel can't tell from an electronics perspective. Definitely don't want to tug on that C connector though, and I did need to be careful when I used it this way
Great review, couldn't agree more with your comments, first thing i noticed was the poor led light defusing, shame but very minimal issue. I got the wheel with a simagic alpha mini thinking it would work with simhub but obviously doesn't work, I may buy the maglink in the future... simagic software to control the lights is very basic compared to the lightshow you get on boot, they really should be able to give more functionality over the lights in their own software.
I wonder if Simagic will bother to step up the led control in Simpro when they know their customers can just plug in Simhub. I can understand why they might just focus on reliability updates and get to work on the next rim - but it would be nice to see the wheel continue to be developed. Time will tell I suppose. Are you considering running the GT Neo with a USB C cable instead of buying Maglink?
Hello Alan, thanks for the detailed Review! Got one question: On the GT-C is a Plate with an X. The Plate looks great and I want one for mine GT-C. Where did you get some sort of Plate?
Hi Dude! The X branding is really slick - X is the second coolest letter in the alphabet, after Q of course - that's why everybody loves getting those letters on Scrabble hahaha That's a GT-C Exodus Racing edition that Simagic make for Simrigs.com so I would reach out to them to see what they can do. Another option could be to 3D print the plate since it's not essential for load bearing (I think...) But you won't have as nice a surface finish as the anodised aluminium
Haha you know I pretty much only drive the F3 right? That truck wheel would be an absolute riot in an open wheeler Might be time to send Moza an email 😂
Hey Alan, just wondering if you've continued to use the neo on your rig and if so how are the grips holding up? I've started to see a lot of posts showing excessive wear, the surface of the rubber peeling away after at little as 10 hours of use. Great video be the way! You're spot on about fanatec currently.
Hi Chonk, I had to return the review unit and my GT Neo is arriving in May so I can't give any longevity feedback. In my time with it I had no indication that wear and tear would be an issue but it was only 2 or 3 weeks.
Did you get your own unit? If so how have the grips been holding up? I'm stuck between the GT Neo and the FX, since I'll probably be using gloves I'm a bit worried about the situation where simagic won't refund the wheel if you use gloves...
Hi, I never did get my GT Neo. There was so much demand from RaceKraft so initially I told them to sell their stock to other customers instead of to me. Then I needed wrist surgery and I'm still recovering from that so there's no urgency for me to get a new rim. I would 100% get the GT Neo even if the grip surface breaks down. You're wearing gloves anyway so it's a cosmetic issue only. The GT Neo is a lot more comfortable than the FX. The FX has this weird square edge that pushes into my thumb and is quite uncomfortable, plus the buttons are all really far away from the hand. The GT Neo is a much better design imo. And it's half the price.
@@DrAlanQuan Thanks for the reply, I'll probably go with the Neo and just deal with the grips when they go. Good luck with recovery, wrist issues are no joke for us sim racers
Hey Alan, I'm wondering about the fanatec connection. Based on your findings, it seems that we can technically just buy the wheel, extract the plate it already comes with, slap it onto the QR2, and just use a usb-c cable to plug in? Basically we don't need the maglink? I know my QR2 lite is different from your podium, but they should be the same size (?)
Hi Chris, Maglink is just a USB cable with a magnetic connector - the wheel can't tell what type of USB cable is used since the electronic signals are the same between the two cables. However, Fanatec wheels need a software handshake through the quick release to enable force feedback - so you will need a Podium Hub if you are running a Fanatec wheelbase. What I meant by not needing Maglink is that the standard plate is physically able to mount third party quick releases - you don't need to buy the Maglink plate to be able to do that. Fanatec is just unique in that it requires the software handshake in addition to the mechanical connection - which means you need to spend a bit more money to make it work. Worth it though, the GT Neo is better than anything Fanatec offer at the same price point even after you factor in the cost of the podium hub Running the wheel via USB C is not ideal - it's not easy to plug in blind, and if the wheel spins beyond the slack available you may break a cable, the connector or both.
Yeah Simagic have done well with this product. A few years of solid product releases has given customers a lot of confidence in the product quality, and then the fast pace of the social media teasers and now having the wheel on sale - it makes sense that it's selling out everywhere. Mine is still a month or two away!
Nice one Alan! I've been eagerly awaiting this video. Great job! I have a question about the dual clutch paddles and the method for setting a bite point on a car like the W13 Mercedes F1 in iRacing. I'm not sure if you still have the wheel or own this car, but to set the bite point do you need to alt-tab out of iRacing and use the Sim Pro software to make an adjustment, then alt-tab back into iRacing?
Hi Luke, thanks for holding out for this video 😂 Yes, to my knowledge setting the bite point requires alt tabbing out of sim and into simpro. I did love the ability to set it on the wheel live via the Fanatec setup menu - I'm not sure if the FX Pro allows you to do that because I've never handled an FX Pro. I return the GT Neo in two days 😭 and I'll get mine whenever supply catches up since I'm only getting on the preorder list now
Great review! Can you tell me is the Neo with podium hub much closer to you then Formula wheel? How much? I have Clubsport RS round wheel and I want gt3 wheel but I dont want to buy one that is much closer to my seating position then RS. Thanks!
Yes it's closer - I have returned the wheel now so I can't measure exactly but I would guess between one and two inches. That's just the way it has to be with the way that Fanatec made the podium hub which is quite thick itself
I thought it was pretty a pretty sharp finding! I think it also helps that I actually had reference material to compare, where a lot of the first reviewers would have been in the dark except for the official Simagic images
Hi Alan. Great review. I just had a question about simagic GT pro hub. Theoretically, am I able to connect it to Fanatec dd1 via podium hub and qr1/2? And via usb C direct to pc? Will the wheel still be able to operate correctly? Thanks
Hi Miguel, thank you. I believe the GT Pro Hub does not function over USB, so I think it won't work in games the way you described. I'll test it tomorrow and see - but I bet Simagic will have a new hub which is Maglink compatible out this year which may be the safer bet
Yeah Simagic have been releasing new products basically every month so I'm pretty sure we'll see something like what you want very soon. Otherwise there's good options like Simcore you can get if the wait is too long
Hi AJ, those started out life as standard red anodised Trak Racer TR-One plates. I just wiped them down and applied a couple of coats of spray paint! Looks way better than the red
Great in-depth video, Alan. I have the NEO on back order and I can wait still have around two weeks or so, I will be using it with the Maglink on my DD2, and I'm intrigued to learn if it will replace my Cube Controls GT Zero which is my current FAV wheel, or will it be another wheel to my collection. I have for some time lost my faith in Fanatec they for sure are victims of complacency and have not kept their eye on the ball, for sure ill keep using my DD2 till it breaks, but I doubt I will ever make a purchase from Fanatec again, and love your content keep up the good work.
Thanks for sharing your perspective - I find it very validating that the observations and concerns I've held myself are also held by others in the community. That said I'm certainly open to exploring viewpoints other than my own and I've definitely received my fair share over the last year! Anyway, I'm happy with my Fanatec wheelbase and I'm looking forward to my own GT Neo - we're like brothers walking the same path in this hobby! ❤️
Hello very interesting how they connected the Fanatec podium hub to the Simagic GT NEO. I have the QR2 from Fanatec and would like to connect the QR2 to the socket on the Simagic GT NEO via the contacts. But what kind of socket is it and what plug do I need for it ?. I'm also not a fan of USB cables. Do you have any information for me? . Then I wouldn't need the SIMAGIC Maglink. Best regards
Hi, the GT Neo can not communicate to Fanatec wheelbases because Fanatec does not use a standard USB protocol. It needs USB or maglink direct to the PC. If you find a different solution please let me know!
Ah ok, sounds like you already have the knowledge and skills to complete the conversion. The USB/maglink header on the GT Neo motherboard is a JST connector of some sort, but I'm not sure of the spec or the pinout.
I want Fanatec to be a viable option - they've shown in the past that they can be the disruptors that move the industry forward - but their wheel and pedal options are really dated, their customer service is demonstrably suffering, their QR2 strategy in my opinion is not consumer-friendly yet their pricing is still solidly mid-to-high-end. Listen to your customers and do better please Fanatec!
Hi I don't quite understand your question, but if you're asking about activating high torque mode have a look at 11:52 and pay attention to the screen. When I hold the wheel at 90° to the right a little progress bar becomes visible and fills up after a few seconds, after which high torque mode is activated (as long as the key is in place) I hope that answers your question!
I'm sure the QR2 is a good mechanical upgrade - and I'm not planning to get rid of the DD1 but the cost of switching is substantial and as an ordinary customer like everybody else I need to review carefully the value that my hard earned money gets me. Maybe I'll bite the bullet and upgrade in 2 years time and be like "what took me so long", maybe I'll do nothing, maybe I'll spend that money elsewhere - argh decisions decisions!
Absolutely agree. This is the first video I shot since relocating the studio, and audio in general is still something I'm trying to get a grasp of - speaking with consistent volume, getting my levels right in camera, treating the environment, post processing - all of it I could improve on!
I don't think I've ever had any issue with vibration on the Simagic bases. The default settings were pretty usable except when the car loses the rear end which I had to dial down a bit. I think when in doubt, go back to default everything and make small changes from there until everything is perfect
Are the grips (circumference) bigger than those in the GTS? Personally, GTS is the worst wheel I've tried, quite thin and hard and rough. In comparison, the Moza CS feels good.
Yes the GT Neo grips are way bigger than the GTS. The GT Neo falls really beautifully in my hands, I agree the GTS is a bit thin and hard - using some thick race gloves helps though (I use OMP first-evo gloves)
@@DrAlanQuanSounds good, but can you pls measure the grips circumference? I'd like to compare it too with the Moza KS, which is also quite thin, and see if it's worth getting (then I'll sell the KS). TY
Hi Christopher, I'm not sure about the bolt pattern of the QR2 - I never measured the Fanatec bolt pattern. So I'm not sure if a QR2 can actually physically bolt onto the wheel as standard What I do know is the GT Neo has cutouts for 50 and 70mm PCD mounting, and that Fanatec wheelbases won't activate torque unless they detect an authentication chip (podium hub, SRM emulator, Leoxz core etc) Long story short. Need a Podium hub (or similar)
Hi, Maglink is ideal but as you saw in the video I did not use Maglink. Here's what I used: GT Neo (obviously haha) Podium hub Reused 3x bolts from original Simagic QR 3x extra M5 bolts (for 6 total into podium hub) The standard QR is fitted with 3 bolts only and you could probably do the same with the podium hub, but I like the extra security having 6 bolts gives me Running this setup does have the risk of messing up the USB C port if the wheel spins beyond the cable length you have which is why Maglink is ideal, but it will work. Just be mindful of the DD1 startup calibration
You technically do not need the podium hub.. SRM sells afforadble wheel emulators and there are many adapter options check out their emulator with built in 70mm pcd for fanatec bases.
Yes, very true and an oversight on my behalf. I only considered first-party options when writing this piece and forgot to discuss third party options. That said, I bought the podium hub specifically for this review - and I looked into the SRM emulator but once I added the QR1 and shipping, the cost was about exactly the same so I decided to buy the podium hub. The podium hub also allows some options for diy shifters and buttons through the connectors on its PCB which I thought could be a fun project. But a very valid observation and I'm glad you called me out on that ❤️
@@DrAlanQuanVery true actually! yeah the shipping from srm is the killer. unless you are within an area that makes sense cost for shipping wise. I also did not know you could add diy buttons to the podium hub thats wild.
@@Silverturkyyeah have a look at what Stuyo @57uyo has done with his DIY projects diy-sim.com/ and ua-cam.com/channels/XCnoNV5Fhk7kDoFN924ClA.html he's done all the hard work figuring out the connectors, the electronic protocols etc and he's put all his files up for free, what a legend
While you can use the USB C to connect, it is not designed for long term use and could lead to damage. Why risk that and warranty when MagLink with a quality coil and magnets are only $20? And not everyone needs MagLink and for these reasons i agree with the move to make it optional
Hi Smokey, I chose to use USB C because at the time of filming there was no Maglink stock in Australia at all, and I wanted to try the wheel on my Fanatec base after I used it on the Alpha Mini. I personally see it as a no risk option. If you break the USB C, it's just a cheap little connector in the stock plate - and you can buy a replacement Maglink plate any time. Plus the simhub functionality requires a cabled connection, which really opens up what the wheel can do. Now Simagic need to manufacture 2 plates - one with a cutout for Maglink, another with a cutout for type C. I think there's advantages to both approaches, I just thought simplifying inventory + giving the base model more functionality is a win win. Obviously I don't have access to their internal data and analytics about profitability etc of doing so
@@smokeybandit1020 if you take the standard plate off, you'll see that the USB C plug has a long cable that plugs into the wheel PCB. When you put Maglink on, the standard USB C PCB+cable+connector gets pulled out and you put in a replacement Maglink PCB + cable + connector. Hence, if anything is going to break it is the little USB C PCB and not the main wheel PCB, and you'd be ripping that USB C PCB out anyway when you upgrade to Maglink. Obviously do it at your own risk, and it sounds like you are being cautious and that's fine - if it's not in your comfort zone so be it. I see little risk to this approach myself 👍
Although I would take RPM LED indicator over non, however do you find yourself using it much while racing? I usually go by engine sound for shifting, so what is the benefit? Also, with SiMagic are there profiles you can upload to ACC or do all the buttons have to be manually binded? Ordered this wheel, awaiting 2nd batch later on March 24. Fantastic content, I love that you speak about a topic, so the shot of exactly what you are talking about and giving providing ample time to see it. Keep up the great work! 10/10!
10/10! Thank you 😄 I use the rev LED a lot for two reasons. 1. The F3 in iRacing hits the rev limiter earlier than it sounds like it should and 2. I'm seated in a formula position so my eyes are right in front of the rev LED If you are seated upright like a GT car, the rev LED is in the wrong place, far too low. There are Simagic profiles but I have never tried it, even in my 3 years of Fanatec ownership I never used any of their game profiles, I just never thought to do it. So I can't share any of my experience with you since there is none. I hope you enjoy the wheel! Mine comes mid April - please share your findings if you find anything that I didn't cover in this video! Thank you for watching and commenting :)
@@micofok730 hi Mico, no I haven't posted this design. I've learned that over time the retention bumps that I designed into it wear out, so the QR just slots in and can be knocked out easily I can redesign a larger head with a deeper slot to prevent it getting knocked out better, but I've got other projects taking priority at the moment So long story short, the stand doesn't have good enough longevity so I haven't released it
@@DrAlanQuan I see! Makes sense, the QR is metal, it'll wear out the printed material. Maybe design something that can integrate the simagic wall mount? (Or AliExpress ones) So the connection point is stronger?
Yeah a few people have mentioned that in their comments. I just made the observation myself when switching between 270mm and 300mm wheels, I found the 270mm worked fine but the 300mm was pushing the limits of leg clearance in my own cockpit. Always happy to be corrected if I make a mistake! Thanks for commenting. What are your thoughts on the GT Neo?
@@DrAlanQuan I don't have the GT Neo but I like the look and idea of it. I'm currently using the CLS DD 8Nm with Formula V2.5 and I also have and previously used the DD with the 300mm Fanatec McLaren V2 wheel. But I found too big for the CLS DD, watering down the FFB strength too much and eventually getting the Formula V2.5 confirmed that for me. I've been thinking of upgrading to a Simagic wheelbase but torn between the Mini and Alpha. You're review here was very helpful in settling the window-shopping debate I was having about whether to go with an FX or Neo, so many thanks for that!
@DrR1pper I'm glad the video provided some meaningful information for you! Any of the Simagic equipment will be an upgrade to the Fanatec gear you've used already, the question is how far up the Simagic food chain do you want to go? Good luck!
Yes that's exactly how I reviewed the wheel - connected it via USB C when it was on my Podium hub. That said, I'm getting a Maglink kit with my GT Neo for the convenience of the magnetic connection
I agree completely. From my perspective as an ordinary home hobbyist simracer, and seeing the options we now have from multiple competing companies in terms of new and innovative products, quality service and fast order fulfillment - Fanatec have really lost touch and do not appear to me to be delivering the products or the confidence for their customers. I'm sure there are smart people in the organisation that know this, and talented people in their design department - they just need to listen to their customers or watch them sail away. Looking forward to having a GT Neo that I don't need to give back 🔥 thanks Jon
@@DrAlanQuan lol 😂 I’m sure it’s just a matter of your wheel and body positioning. Likely the wheelbase needs to be a little higher or the chair a little lower. If you don’t have clearance for a 300mm wheel then something definitely needs moving.
The current Mercedes, Ferrari and McLaren wheels are 280mm actually. LMP2 also uses a 280mm diameter cosworth wheel. It's very uncommon for a single seater/ high down force steering wheel to be anything over 290mm
I am glad you enjoyed your $500 plastic wheel but at which point do you need to switch from reviewing a cheap simagic wheel to Fanatec bashing. And then you decide to bash on the QR2 without ever using it. Wow!
Hi Steve, thank you for writing your comment. I really value the opportunity to chat with other hobbyists and learn. I'm an ordinary consumer just like everybody, and I weigh up my hobby purchases because my money comes from my physical labour and I want to see value in my purchases. I don't feel I was bashing Fanatec, I feel like the Fanatec products I have held with my hands have some strengths over the subject of this review (tuning menu and LED quality) which I openly discussed. I have also been influenced by the many reports online of poor customer experience for one reason or another and yes, it makes me hesitant to spend my money there. Add to that the stale product range (the best Fanatec have to offer today in terms of high end pedals and high end formula rims is the V3 pedals and the formula V2.5, both of which are very old, their issues are well documented yet there is nothing from Fanatec about giving their consumers a better product even after all these years. The BMW M4 GT3 wheel is far too expensive for my consideration hence I've not discussed it). And I don't feel like I bashed the QR2 - I said it should address the mechanical concerns I have, and I also said I don't like what Fanatec are doing with their QR2 inventory. When you buy any Fanatec wheel, they have factored in the cost of a QR1 hence you can get a QR1 for free. But if you want a QR2 you pay the full standalone retail price for the QR2. What happened to the cost factor of the QR in the original pricing of the wheel? Why no credit (even $20 or so) towards the cost of a QR2? Pure double dipping profit or if we're being very generous, a terrible oversight that is not consumer friendly at all. Wow indeed! If I'm barking up the wrong tree please let me know, I would hate to misunderstand the situation and be ignorant to a good thing in Fanatec - this is my perspective from what I've observed in the industry for the last 3 years since buying my DD1 and UA-cam gives me a platform to discuss my concerns. Thanks for commenting!
@@smokeybandit1020 at least with the podium bases the standard collar is solid. The CSL/DD PRO collars (original and QR2 version) both being problematic... Is not a good thing

Hello. I am very picky about everything. But I have only positive things to say about your review here. You clearly have talent. You are clear and serious and honest. You don't overplay like many unfortunately do. So I will follow you and see more of you. Hello from Sweden.
Hej Magnus!
Thank you so much for your support, I hope to see you often in my comments ❤️
your production value is great keep it up
Thank you Stuart, I'm a bit of perfectionist and I get hung up on every little detail that doesn't quite match my vision, but overall I think I'm able to produce videos that look interesting.
Plus there's a clear design flaw in the plastic grips because they break on both rims in the same locations (where the rear grip meets the centre hub, and the little fingers for screw mounting)
But hang on just one more week I have a pretty interesting video coming for Fanatec Formula wheel owners ;)
@DrAlanQuan sounds good looking foward to seeing it.
@@reviewforthetube6485 when you take off the grips on the Fanatec rim you'll see the Alcantara is glued over a hollow injection moulded plastic case which has a soft touch rubber coating on the outside. And there's obvious weak points that break over time (I've seen it on a number of wheels with my own eyes and also people have shown photos online)
Thanks for pointing out that you don't think I'm lying, but that your experience is different to mine - I really appreciate that!
@@DrAlanQuan I covered the grips now with black over grip tapes. Not the most beautiful but it does the job.
Finally! Someone on UA-cam who pronounces Simagic with only one 'm'. And thanks for the great review.
Hahahaha I might slip in a Sim Magic in my next video just to ruffle your feathers a bit ❤️
Now to get the doc pronouncing Fanatec currently ;)
@@ChristopherWoods Is it pronounced fanatic and not fa nah tech?
Nice review, just got mine 4 weeks, sooo more rigid than previous wheel, Fanatec mcLaren with plastic QR on CSW2.5. The plastic rotary knobs is only cost saving, i feel would benefit from upgrade , me racing barehands. Also liked that the alpha mini gave me small bruise on the hand, when i stupidly let go of the wheel after a lost slide
The Alpha Mini is no joke! That little motor can really do it all. Such a good wheelbase and wheel combo.
Thanks Don,
I'm probably not doing much to build my relationship with Fanatec to create content together lol but I have to speak my truth and for the time being, I see little value in spending money with Fanatec.
Do not buy anything from fanatec today. Almost every other option on the market is significantly better in every way.
New studio looking good!
The new studio has presented so many challenges! The lighting and acoustics still need more dialling in, but the new 3D printer as well as the additional content partners has given a lot of personality to the wall :)
Thanks for your support!
@DrAlanQuan maybe to test but I wouldn't risk the fragile connection long term
Very nice test, ty for sharing :)
You've got one more follower;)
Hey that's amazing! Thanks for your comment, it's always nice when people like you take the time to reach out!
Hello Alan, thanks for the detailed Review! Got one question: On the GT-C is a Plate with an X. The Plate looks great and I want one for mine GT-C. Where did you get some sort of Plate?
Hi Dude!
The X branding is really slick - X is the second coolest letter in the alphabet, after Q of course - that's why everybody loves getting those letters on Scrabble hahaha
That's a GT-C Exodus Racing edition that Simagic make for Simrigs.com so I would reach out to them to see what they can do.
Another option could be to 3D print the plate since it's not essential for load bearing (I think...) But you won't have as nice a surface finish as the anodised aluminium
Hi Alan. Nice review, as usual. Gonna review the Moza TSW truck wheel?
Haha you know I pretty much only drive the F3 right? That truck wheel would be an absolute riot in an open wheeler
Might be time to send Moza an email 😂
@@DrAlanQuan I know, but... Do it for craps and giggles. Lol
Worth it though, the GT Neo is better than anything Fanatec offer at the same price point even after you factor in the cost of the podium hub
Running the wheel via USB C is not ideal - it's not easy to plug in blind, and if the wheel spins beyond the slack available you may break a cable, the connector or both.
@@DrAlanQuan thanks for the info and video brother
Happy to be here, my friend ❤️
Thanks for watching and commenting :)
It was sold out in about a few Minutes at our German disrtubutor... Insane
Hi Luke, thanks for holding out for this video 😂
Yes, to my knowledge setting the bite point requires alt tabbing out of sim and into simpro. I did love the ability to set it on the wheel live via the Fanatec setup menu - I'm not sure if the FX Pro allows you to do that because I've never handled an FX Pro.
I return the GT Neo in two days 😭 and I'll get mine whenever supply catches up since I'm only getting on the preorder list now
No worries, thanks!
@@DrAlanQuanOK thanks!
Great observation with the pattern being the same. Havent seen anyone mention that
I thought it was pretty a pretty sharp finding!
@@DrAlanQuan if theres a new one coming this year then I might as well wait for that 😁
Yeah Simagic have been releasing new products basically every month so I'm pretty sure we'll see something like what you want very soon.
Otherwise there's good options like Simcore you can get if the wait is too long
So I asume the usb c on podium hub doesnt work directly with simagic usb c?
That is correct
Where did you get the gold mounting plates for the DD1 from? They look great.
Hi AJ, those started out life as standard red anodised Trak Racer TR-One plates.
I just wiped them down and applied a couple of coats of spray paint! Looks way better than the red
@@DrAlanQuan Good job! Don't know if I can be that dedicated (and my wife would make me do other DIY stuff).
Hello
very interesting how they connected the Fanatec podium hub to the Simagic GT NEO.
@@DrAlanQuan Well, I changed the QR2 to USB. My base, Asetek Forte, and the Simagic GT Neo should also be changed to USB without cables.
Ah ok, sounds like you already have the knowledge and skills to complete the conversion. The USB/maglink header on the GT Neo motherboard is a JST connector of some sort, but I'm not sure of the spec or the pinout.
Well said about fanatec. Nice video!
Hi Alan Good Video one Q , can you tell us how you quite the high torque on DD1 with the neo rim and podium hub?
Hi I don't quite understand your question, but if you're asking about activating high torque mode have a look at 11:52 and pay attention to the screen. When I hold the wheel at 90° to the right a little progress bar becomes visible and fills up after a few seconds, after which high torque mode is activated (as long as the key is in place)
I hope that answers your question!
@@DrAlanQuan yes that’s it 🙏
Quality review ….. seen ur channel grow
Thanks, I try my best to pass on what I learn to everybody. It's fun!
The QR2 is definitely worth the purchase if you aren’t getting rid of your DD1 in some way
I'm sure the QR2 is a good mechanical upgrade - and I'm not planning to get rid of the DD1 but the cost of switching is substantial and as an ordinary customer like everybody else I need to review carefully the value that my hard earned money gets me.
Maybe I'll bite the bullet and upgrade in 2 years time and be like "what took me so long", maybe I'll do nothing, maybe I'll spend that money elsewhere - argh decisions decisions!
Reports of QR2 collars breaking have come out lately 😢
You need some sound deadening in that room for your videos to up the sound quality.
Absolutely agree. This is the first video I shot since relocating the studio, and audio in general is still something I'm trying to get a grasp of - speaking with consistent volume, getting my levels right in camera, treating the environment, post processing - all of it I could improve on!
How did you get the vibration to stop, my force feedback is all over the place
I don't think I've ever had any issue with vibration on the Simagic bases. The default settings were pretty usable except when the car loses the rear end which I had to dial down a bit.
I think when in doubt, go back to default everything and make small changes from there until everything is perfect
@DrAlanQuan me and my friend was up to 2am I'm the morning trying to figure it
Are the grips (circumference) bigger than those in the GTS?
TY
@@jgloc25 it's tricky to measure because there is a spoke exactly at the thickest part of the grip, but I measure the circumference at 129mm
Is it possible to mount the QR2 directly to the wheel? Or do i need the podium hub as well?
Hi Christopher, I'm not sure about the bolt pattern of the QR2 - I never measured the Fanatec bolt pattern. So I'm not sure if a QR2 can actually physically bolt onto the wheel as standard
What I do know is the GT Neo has cutouts for 50 and 70mm PCD mounting, and that Fanatec wheelbases won't activate torque unless they detect an authentication chip (podium hub, SRM emulator, Leoxz core etc)
Long story short. Need a Podium hub (or similar)
@@DrAlanQuan Thx Alan, i will let you know the outcome if it works!
do i need any other parts for using the simagic fx pro with podium hub on a fanatec dd1?
Hi, Maglink is ideal but as you saw in the video I did not use Maglink. Here's what I used:
GT Neo (obviously haha)
Podium hub
Reused 3x bolts from original Simagic QR
3x extra M5 bolts (for 6 total into podium hub)
The standard QR is fitted with 3 bolts only and you could probably do the same with the podium hub, but I like the extra security having 6 bolts gives me
Running this setup does have the risk of messing up the USB C port if the wheel spins beyond the cable length you have which is why Maglink is ideal, but it will work.
Obviously I don't have access to their internal data and analytics about profitability etc of doing so
@@DrAlanQuan but what if you break the connector on the wheel PCB?
It's pretty simple to solder the broken usb C cable. It's not connected to the Pcb.
10/10! Thank you 😄
I use the rev LED a lot for two reasons. 1. The F3 in iRacing hits the rev limiter earlier than it sounds like it should and 2. I'm seated in a formula position so my eyes are right in front of the rev LED
If you are seated upright like a GT car, the rev LED is in the wrong place, far too low.
Where did you get that white wheel stand?
Hi there, I designed and 3D printed it 👍
Is the design available anywhere?
@@micofok730 hi Mico, no I haven't posted this design.
I've learned that over time the retention bumps that I designed into it wear out, so the QR just slots in and can be knocked out easily
I can redesign a larger head with a deeper slot to prevent it getting knocked out better, but I've got other projects taking priority at the moment
So long story short, the stand doesn't have good enough longevity so I haven't released it
@@DrAlanQuan I see! Makes sense, the QR is metal, it'll wear out the printed material. Maybe design something that can integrate the simagic wall mount? (Or AliExpress ones) So the connection point is stronger?
@@micofok730 that's a good idea! Not a high priority for me at the moment though
Actual Formula steering wheels in F1 are 300mm though, just like the Neo.
Good luck!
Is this a good wheel to play ACC?
I don't play ACC but the wheel is really good, I'm sure it works great on ACC too
So let me confirm i can buy the gt neo and put a podium hub on it without buying the maglink?
Yes that's exactly how I reviewed the wheel - connected it via USB C when it was on my Podium hub.
That said, I'm getting a Maglink kit with my GT Neo for the convenience of the magnetic connection

Fanatec is a has been. Look at there pedals sooooo old. Service is crap. Sorry Fanatec you were good once.
@@DrAlanQuan but you are not just "an ordinary home hobbyist simracer"; you reek of chinese propaganda
Just so you know real F1 car steering wheels are 300mm. The same as the GT Neo. Real GT3 cars typically have a wheel diameter of around 310-340mm.
Thanks Alec, that's good to know. I guess my issue with the wheel hitting my belly is all to do with... My belly 😂😂😂
Just so you know, most real F1 steering wheels are below 290mm.
Pretty sure fanatecs McLaren wheel is 1 to 1 replica and that is 300mm
290 dollar wheel, plastic yes but a very nice wheel and can be used across platforms 👍
Reports of QR2 collars breaking coming out recently 😢
@@smokeybandit1020 at least with the podium bases the standard collar is solid. The CSL/DD PRO collars (original and QR2 version) both being problematic... Is not a good thing
