Ben, love you and hate you at the same time, You make mudding look so damned easy! I did mud again today with tape, it was a struggle but only have 3 hollow sounding spots and an edge of tape that did not adhere. Thank you sir, you have given me so much knowledge!!
When I did my basement, I went with the glue on vinyl bead. I didn't want to lacerate the hell out of myself with metal. You showed me how to apply paper mudset beads after the fact and I like. I cannot say I walk around with a hammer smashing my corner beads. Maybe since my kids have their own corner beads, durability is no longer an issue. Great video Ben!
Ben if you’re gonna do some Project Farm - could you test different muds with different mesh tapes vs paper tape? Strength to resist cracking with movement and whatnot or ability to pull apart? Would love to know whos right in this debate…
I’m pretty sure all my corner beads are metal from the old days. It was built around ‘68. Had to repair a couple of them so far. Just a few taps with the hammer & then applied the mud & shaped, sanded, primed & painted. Good as new. 😉
Great video, very informative. Question; I have bull nose edging and after living with it for over 20 years am convinced it’s the most frustrating. How in the world do you fix dents in bull nose edging??
I like videos like this. I hope you keep that bash-the-corner jig so you can do more, I would have liked to see the results for paper faced vinyl corner bead.
Okay, so hear me out. I think the damage would've been a little more severe if you stablized your "wall." I think because it's able to swing, it's absorbing some impact. Still a cool video. 👊🏼 Edit: 4:28 you even realized it. Sorry lol
Lol. Don't feel bad, I commented at 4minutes so made the same mistake… Just like I didn’t finish reading the rest of your comment until my finger got to running around the keyboard. Haha
Hi, thank for so much great content, I would've like to see an exemple of a scrap piece of each beads your taling about to visualise it better. I don't know all of them and not sur which one is which
interesting experiment. I was a convert to the PaperBead after various UA-cam drywaller people such as yourself showing me how to use & install the product. However I was a fan of the plastic beads as they were easier to install for DIY'ers such as myself. I always wondered how they would hold up to regular wear and tear? And if I ever place my walls under Siege, that is a quite a contraption.
So I watched this a couple days ago, and this morning while driving to work, I was thinking about all the steel corner beads in my house that need repair from those edge cracks. Could you suggest your recommended way to fix all those annoying things?!?! I've got a 23 year old spec house single owner with them on many (most?) exterior corners as well as some interior ones, and since we've never once fixed nail pops here, I feel like it's time I went after them somewhat. My image could be trying to pull them completely/scratching down the excess mud/installing new paper-over-steel corners, or maybe scratching out some mud and taping the crack. Neither seems like fun. But hey, something should get done and simply mudding over seems like a short term solution, so.... thought I'd ask. Thanks for considering! (And yes, I hope your projects are going well, but you're doing better. One of my favorite closing phrases for a YT channel, like, ever.)
Excellent video, I just came for the engineering and ' project management ' Seriously I'm going to use mud Trimtex a lot more, I concur with what I'm going to guess, is a lot of guys saying how good and long lasting metal bead is.
So Ben I might be doing it wrong but I have always done trimtex with full mud behind it and found it was crazy strong. I understand this isn't the faster commerical or spec home way to do it. but it was how my dad did it lol. We'd typically use a hacksaw to cut it out as impact or water damaged corners with older metal beads. I am with you on spray on adhesive, even when you get the spraying angle and amount down pat it just isn't very satisfying. Having to have adhesive and a staple gun is somewhat annoying when taping. Ben how do you do round corner bead? Do you fill the corner? I have always filled the cornerbead prior to installing and then pushed the hell out of it to get it squared or proper to the corner.
@@vancouvercarpenter so interesting. I haven't done a ton, but I have about 3 houses under my belt. Although I'm nowhere near commercial/ professional speed, I do alright. It sure takes a lot more time and the transitions can be finicky if the corner is out of angle. Did a fireplace once that the person's request was an adobe look. We had bullnose arches bending on all three axes. What a gong. I'm guessing that it was ripped out years ago by the next home owner. It was so unique to that person's preference.
The drywall is attached to the framing. When the framing moves, so does the drywall. You get hairlines on metal beads because metal beads move in between nails. Best to glue them on and then nail them. But just add glue to the plastic beads and you’re golden.
Ben good video👍👊🇨🇦🇨🇦 what is you thought about using a staple gun Milwaukee 16g to install metal or vinyl bead i seen this on maxkil drywall gansters seems like a good idea but you need wood behind corner🤣👍👊🇨🇦
First of all, is VC plannin on gettin jacked or somethin?! Sup with that weight set The fact that the time was taken to describe of the testing method alone makes this a top tier review. Besides the light flex of the wall absorbing the impact this is the better testing video I've seen.
Thanks :) I use those weights. I'm just a hardgainer without a ton of free time. Also, I don't think it mattered that the wall flexed. Most impacts a wall will take won't even be as hard as the first test.
No Coat...laser sharp outside AND inside corners. Marketed as a structural bead. I learning curve to use but thin the mud like pancake batter to install so it squeezes out easier.
I have a question, is it wise to use "Plus 3" for taping & corners to the final finish? " seen people use it this way". I have one room to do & it would be a lot of extra compound left over buying a box heavy all-purpose and a box lightweight all-purpose what would you do if you were not in the buisness? would you buy both regardless of waste? Thx for your videos and time
Plus 3 is fine for the whole job if you are skilled at taping but using Green lid all purpose for the tape is waaaaaay better. Green lid sticks way more so it is more forgiving to an imperfect tape job. I know it seems like a waste of mud to have a bunch left over but whats even more of a waste is having walls that fail sooner because an inferior product was used.
This will probably sound wierd, but I'm visiting family in Vanc, got a day left and would like to meet you anywhere near Vancouver Centre, if possible, just to shake your hand really, 😂
@@vancouvercarpenter this is not the last time I'm here, maybe next time. As a matter of fact it looks like whole family including kids wants to move to Vancouver, who knows 😂😉. North Van or even west Van if I can sell well in Ontario... 🙏
metal bead goes on with a crimper tool, nails don't allow it to lay flat. mabe !'m wrong . but that, not nais is the better installation, ya think, ahh ?
Vancouver Carpenter meets Project Farm, I like it 👍
That's, probably, the best compliment you could give. This is a great video.
Next video, "How To Repair Those Corner Beads," is actually a pretty good video idea to follow this one up with. 👌

Perfect for taking out burglars on the stairwell, also great test👍

Alright that done... Now- show us the repair because I can't fathom how to repair any of these beads
Can you do a test with No-Coat? I have a feeling it would be great for impact resistance

Great video. It would be interesting to see the bead hit right on the edge. I think that would be where most times it is bumped etc.

Staples are only there to keep it tight to the wall while the glue is drying
