Hey Chris. The best thing to do is to not publicly criticize Brecka because he’s helped Dana White and is helping others but maybe because you have a medical background and PhD. Then you should reach out to him and work with him to fill in the gaps of knowledge he might not have and vice versa. I know you wanna make content but as men and masculinity being put on a chopping block we should stand together as best we can taking less confrontational actions which is more masculine and help as many people as you can. Wow, thank you for this video, I’ve seen so much hate on Gary brecka after looking him up on Rogan and felt like the people hating on him were not substantiating any claims really and are part of the corrupted system that is eviscerating our health. You definitely earned a new follower of your work after this awesome breakdown of the podcast and correcting the record while making it clear that you have our real health in mind. Much love and thanks🙏
I've gone to "professionals" with a "science background" my entire life and all i've ever been prescribed was drugs that caused more side-effects than they were worth. Since getting my genes tested and adjusting my nutrient intake accordingly I've gone off all medication, including ADHD medication and my life has never been better. Nowadays I avoid anyone who flexes their PHD or science background as I've realised these things are really quite arbitrary and I've been doing very well for myself. Another general rule of thumb, anyone who claims to "fact check" should be avoided like the plague.
I disagree, I am glad Chris Littlejohn made this video and he was very respectful with his critique. I have now seen 2-3 interviews with Gary Brecka where he makes an assertion and when challenged by the host, he throws out a set list of generalities and no specifics. I find it uncomfortable listening to him at times. Chris is right that you cannot pigeonhole all maladies into 5 gene mutations as it oversimplifies the complexity and uniqueness of human genetics. That is like saying that a standard lipid panel from your primary care doctor is as effective as enhanced test like a Cleveland Heart Panel. I am with Chris about his praise of Gary for extolling the value nutrition and naturopathic alternatives to immediate pharmacological intervention. My issue with Gary is he speaks from a script from which he is unable to deviate and drill down into specifics. If anyone is out there in the public realm pushing a narrative which can affect people’s health, they need be challenged when making claims which are not supported by science. Chris does a great job of pointing out Gary’s misstatements and supported them with science.
You gonna want the medical doctors flexing their credentials when your life is on the line and they save it. It’s not as black and white as everyone makes it seem
Pharmacy Technician.... In Pharmacy "folic acid" is used mistakenly as a generic term for a folate. You cited a clinical trial from 2010 when the terms "folic acid" and "folate" were used interchangeably. They still are in Pharmacy today. A folate can help prevent NBD but not the synthetic "folic acid". This trail would have been using the generic term "folic acid".
I knew this guy was full of it. You can tell he really had to struggle to get just the right angle to make this video. I figured he was just attacking his competition but FDA hoar sounds more accurate.
Love this content I wish you provided recommendations on where to go for a full genetic test and where to go to have it analyzed for supplementation advice.
So, for people with the mthfr mutation what else could be recommended outside of this general knowledge: 1. Supplements: Besides methylated B12 (methylcobalamin), folate in its active form (5-MTHF or folinic acid), and vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), other supplements like Betaine (TMG), NAC (N-Acetylcysteine), and SAM-e (S-Adenosyl methionine) may be suggested. 2. Diet: A diet rich in natural folates such as leafy greens, asparagus, and legumes is typically recommended. Foods high in natural B vitamins, like eggs, nuts, and avocados, can also be beneficial. It’s important to avoid processed foods and those with added synthetic folic acid.
@@matthewthebutlerlisten to his series of podcasts titled “living with MTHFR”. Great information along with dietary recommendations. Takes a few hours to work through the episodes but worth it. Add to you list creatine supplementation and high choline intake, at least.
Thank you so much for this analysis. I almost believed Brecka because I watched him on Diary of a CEO. BUT I also knew that it is NEVER as simple as he sees it! Your fact check gave me proof. Thank you and I will join your master program and hopefully become your client. I want to finally solve my health issues.
Hey man, thanks for the video. Just wondering what to you makes a good comprehensive genetic test? Im in Australia looking to optimise my health and not really sure what to look at. Thanks
Thanks Chris. I so appreciate that Rogan brings on people who think outside the box and even that he acknowledged this guys real health success through nutrition I just wish people would be more careful when they suddenly become the expert on everything after one success and their experience becomes the gospel for everyone. Thanks for pointing out his false claims and inaccurate metaphors.
One success? He has a whole network of centres helping people. He also is working with many people who are friends of Dana. People in the science world are forever disagreeing with each other, but this was disrespecting. Have your opinion, but he’s helping people, and lots of them. If it’s working for them, leave him alone.
He did in fact say that you don’t have to get this test with him and you can get it anywhere else, and pertaining to that study of taking folic acid during pregnancy , he said not everyone is able to break these down and if the study did not take that into account it is practically a randomized test since only around 44% of people can take the non methylated and be effective so that’s another flaw in that study.
Everyone can metabolize folic acid, the people with the gene mutations just are not as efficient in doing so. Everyone can take non methylated, it just doesn't work as well, so they need higher doses to compensate (usually)
To the critiques in here: Brecka wasnt TRYING to cover everything for everyone in s 30 min or even couple hrs of interviews. He is overviewing It would be rash for someone to try to fix these things from just a short synopsis. It is a good place to start researching for oneself!! Thanks to both Gary and Chris. Yes might be more beneficial for meet up to work together where deeper clearer results might be obtained as both have heart to help others.
I know one thing. I have the gene mutation. I started taking methylated vitamins and it has made a huge difference in the way I feel. I have far more energy and far less anxiety and depression. You can say what you want, but it's helped me! Gary Brecka earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology General from Frostburg State University. Subsequently, he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Human Biology from the National University of Health Sciences. Maybe he doesn't claim he knows everything; I haven't heard him say he's infallible. He has a lot of on the job training as well. I think we would be crazy to think anybody is infallible. We also shouldn't disregard his experience. We should take his advice and see how we each respond! I think you are being a bit arrogant in thinking a graduate degree means more than other experience. After covid, I damn sure don't trust most of the overly educated talking heads. I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but the deaths were insanely exaggerated, and the vaccine isn't really a vaccine. It helps survivability, but it doesn't prevent disease. Educated people can try his ideas and see how they feel.
100% Also, anyone can read research if they have attended any undergraduate or graduate school. I don’t think I could tell you what I learned in school vs what I studied after receiving my Doctorate degree! Do you know if this guy in the video sees patients?
I did a nursing degree & I can tell you that my years of experience with patients was much more of a learning experience = pinch of salt when learning & applying knowledge
I had chronic body pain, sluggishness, brain fog and fatigue. I took the L-methylfolate as mentioned by the man in the video and it literally gave my life back to me. All of my symptoms are gone completely.

@@modut6258 not me, but I know a child who has this issue. She was 7 when diagnosed. She's 10 and on Methimizole. What do you recommend for reversing the damage and going into remission.
My 17 year old daughter was diagnosed by a psychiatrist at age 7 with PDDNOS” , which I guess now is just under the autism umbrella . She also was diagnosed a few years later with anxiety , ADD, and OCD. She had an extreme hand washing issue ..it disrupted her daily life all through elementary school until we found the right medication for her. She has struggled all through her life with very poor executive function, forgetfulness, trouble focusing even on ADD medication. The school district we are in has been amazing because they have a fantastic program for kids with learning issues etc..My daughter has also always had bad eczema and allergies. Out of the blue a few months ago she had a seizure that caused the right side of her face to droop right after, but it went away. Saw a neurologist, had CT scan and found out that she has bi lateral scatterings of gray matter heterotopias in her brain with a significantly large one in her right frontal lobe and two others at the end of each anterior horn, one which goes into the “ speech /language “ part of her brain. So basically these things are disrupting signals to parts of her brain, which explains a lot of the struggles that she has had learning. She is now at a high risk for future seizures and epilepsy. I know that the brain is amazing and pliable at her age. New pathways can be made around these “ road blocks” in her brain. Is there ANYTHING we can do nutritional & supplementally wise to support optimal function of her brain? Sorry this is so long . Thank you
Look into psilocybin. Unbelievable research that a single 5mg dose can increase neural pathways immensely. Read How to Change your Mind by Michael Pollen. It's showing incredible breakthroughs for OCD as well. I am not a doctor.......the evidence is just pointing to psilocybin as an absolute game changer so might want to do some research and look into it.
As the other commenter said various Species of Mushrooms can be helpful for making new neural pathways among other benefits. If you do go the medicinal mushroom route make sure you’re getting them in the right form based on the species. Some require additional extraction methods to be fully beneficial, which would come down to where you source from. I got my girlfriend some from the company Rainbo a while back and she seemed to like them. I believe they use proper extraction methods for their products,
So I was able to find that I have MTHFR, MTRR, and COMT by doing 23 and Me, then uploading the raw data to the found my fitness website. It's Dr Rhonda Patrick's, who's been on Rogan.
Best fact-checking video I've seen. To the point, with scientific sources, looking at the big picture as well as key details. Very valuable indeed. Thank you Chris!
I'm really grateful for finding that video-it's saved me from spending $600 on testing only five genes! Do you have any genetic testing recommendations?
Thanks Chris for your brilliant explanation. I will however still side with Brecka, because while he could err on the side of caution, i appreciate his willingness to help humans prolong their health ... something no modern doctor is able to do for us any more. They are all forced to sign NDAs and prescribe copious amounts of medications, with little to no explanations or cures. For the first time in my life, since i started self-educating on natural health, have i been able to actually stay healthy. I believe doctors start out practicing with good hearts and intentions... but indoctrination takes over and their ability or willingness to apply their own minds no longer exists. Since the plandemic i have lost all faith in 'science and medicine' , and now i hope i can regain my faith in those who are qualified to diagnose and prescribe them.
Just… wanted to explain, this is a very dumb fucking take. You’re concerned about doctors because they have perverse incentives from pharmaceutical companies, I.E. they will place profit over proper treatment. Now, as a side bar, I’d argue that’s definitely a thing but not nearly as prevalent as folks seem to think. Doctors often prescribe pills because they work and they work immediately. Would it be BETTER if patients dieted, ate non processed food and exercised? Yeah. But most people don’t do that and even if they WILL make the change, results take time. But returning to Brecka being a shill, most of his Dana White hype is “hydrogenated water” that he sells, red light beds that he sells and magneto beds (that he sells). Dana got TRT, ate better and got one of the best gym trainers in the business, THEN put in the hard work, which is testament to HIS willpower not Brecka’s snake oil. Distrusting medical doctors because they might prioritize money over health makes no fucking sense when witch doctors have the same potential for greed but with vastly less legal oversight.
I looked up just one gene test through labcorp which is where i get my routine blood done and just to test one of these five was $300. I paid for the gene test since i was getting all 5. For $599.
Whenever Drs start attacking smart people you know they are on to something. Gary didn’t say it would help everyone. He said 40% of people have these deficiencies.

Thank you for sharing. I'm so confused now I have struggled all my life with overthinking and negative patterns. I've had issues with my thyroid hypothyroid. I'm on natural thyroid when I went on the carnivore diet. I got gout in two days, and after researching, it sounds like my liver is not converting T4 to T3, what would you suggest to find out how to get my cognitive function along with my metabolic function aligned so I feel good. my functional medical doctor said she thinks I cannot get off my natural thyroid because I've been on it for 15 years at 1.5 grains I believe everything can be healed no matter when we just don't know the answer always. Would love your direction.
👍👌🤩 Amazing, Doc. So - what Test or Diagnosis would you recommend for those of us 50+ to undergo (i.e., HGS) so that we can determine what deficiencies we may have; and post that, what supplements or nutrition plan we could live by? P.S., where can we obtain the $400 HGS test. Blessings and greatly appreciated, Doc.
It’s essential to discern between the general, exploratory nature of discussions on platforms like podcasts and the precision required in clinical advice. Podcasts like Joe Rogan’s often touch on a wide array of topics and are meant to entertain and spark interest rather than serve as personalized medical guidance. Gary Brekka’s comments on being able to determine deficiencies from a cheek swab should likely be taken in the spirit of that setting-thought-provoking but not a substitute for thorough medical diagnosis.
All respect for you and your knoledge that has been taken for all over the place + your PHD( just as example- some articles show that sugar is good and some show that is bad)In conclusion the guy made a diference to some people life and helps others without charge telling them what can work and showing the results. He said that his not the only one wh dose the gene tests.....The message is that anyone can try anything and see if works without side effects and taking out people from taking a lot of pills prescribed by doctors with PHD's.I am waiting to see how you change people lives with all your knowledge without charging them ...
Did you not watch the video? He just explained several possible causes for many of the issues Gary discussed. He just gave you free medical advice to improve your health.
Finally… someone who said what I’ve been thinking reading these reviews. Fine, so there’s more to all this gene stuff than a simple test. But… and that’s a Big but, Gary’s the first person that got my attention and apparently a whole lot of people’s attention by directing us to some useful supplements to try after years of suffering. In other words, to all you phds, Gary started the much needed conversation and opened my eyes to new info to look into with my dr. Which is exactly what I did. My GP is now recommending a genome test. And Gary said it in much easier words for my layman’s brain to comprehend than what this guy is saying. Sounded at times like gobble do goop to me. I wouldn’t even be listening to this guy if it hadn’t been for brecka or Rogan..
I have Hyperhomocysteinemia Accelerated Atherosclerosis due to a number of gene polymorphisms, which includes MTHFR but also a few not normally mentioned. Thus includes dysfunction in processing folate from food, in processing choline into betaine, and in transportation of B12 from the blood stream into the cells. So far I've required five heart stents and one in my right leg femoral artery just in the past six years. My athersclerosis speeded up in late 2019 when put on proton pump inhibitors, causing my folate and B12 to plummet and my homocysteine to rise again. It was initially tested after my first heart stent in 2017, mainly as I don't have any conventional lifestyle-driven risk factors or comorbidities, and my homocysteine was 48 umol/L. Currently I've got it down to 13.5 umol/L. BTW, wouldn't taking creatine and phosphatidylcholine be a better way to boost SAMe levels than taking SAMe if you have methylation dysfunction? SAMe can raise homocysteine while creatine and phosphatidylcholine helps lower it, as you would know, by leaving more SAMe methyl donors available for remethylating homocysteine into methionine.
great stuff Chris. I think people like Brecka are part -marketers and generalise if their methods work for some, but there is definitely more to each cases than simply mutation in 5 genes. But at least, now I am aware of genetic defects, and deficiencies in critical minerals due to lack of methylation, may be responsible for some of my health issues. Will check out more on your website and work
Thank you for laying this out so well! I’m an Epigenetic Human Performance Coach , not a science geek, an about action. But when listening to Brecka I about shit myself. 😮 I’ve been doing DNA FOR 5 years. It’s a complex system and we are all individual to our needs. I cannot fathom giving my clients 5 SNPs. I do 3-6 PANELS! I now have people freaking out about methylation and MTHFR, when there is absolutely no need. But you need to look at labs, DNA, at minimum to see what’s expressing. And Gary, not all of us tolerate methylated forms! Potential with COMT AA you didn’t even mention! I’ll finish my rant, but people, don’t fall for this crap. Chris didn’t bash, but summarized perfectly. Thank you for those of us doing this important work! 🙌🙌🙏
Nice! At 1:18 you mention seed oils. Two questions; 1-Why are the science bros always pro seed oil? 2-Your take on Castor bean oil? Thanks for your persistence and dedication!
Thank you for posting this after I have been watching quite a bit of content from Gary Brecka. However I have a specific question for my situation that I’m hoping you may be able to help me with. I have a sickle cell anemic trait and have to take B12 daily but I was listening to different things Gary said on Joe Rogan about methylated B complex vitamins and its benefits, I think I would incredibly benefit from this after looking at various supplements and have bloodwork coming in 6 months so I didn’t think the extra things like B6, folate, and trimethylglycine would hurt to see what it does. I eat mostly animal based with fruits like dragon fruits and mangos.
What is concerning that our medical system was not able to help a billionaire like Dana White who can afford to visit best doctors and hospitals. And then guy with BS in Biology solves all his health issues in 10 weeks and makes him feel like a young man again! And this didn't happen only to Dana but to so many other people. And it's not just Gay but also other "health gurus" as modern medicine calls them. So something is definitely broken here. Personally if I was sick and had health issues I would go and visit someone who has results!
It's BS - if you have impaired methylation, you probably have mercury toxicity. Nature doesn't allow for the proliferation of faulty genes - these are normal healthy genes, impaired by toxic metals
Your argument from T4 to T3 is accurate the molecule itself doesn’t receive a methyl attachment while having the I cleaved so no methylation, this is where he is completely wrong. However he may be partially correct. - deiodinases are a class of enzyme This enzyme cleaves iodine from molecules to make them more active for different receptors. -These enzymes are found in periphery tissue throughout the body. -the lining of the stomach is periphery tissue and I believe does contain deiodinases. -Therefore, some of this conversion does take place in the stomach. Like you said though he is mostly wrong. T4 does have some innate action, tons of things work immediately when you consume them. Otherwise aspirin and other drugs wouldn’t have an effect. Glucose is another, the list goes on and on. I digress, I’m sure this change from T4 to T3 is happening throughout bodily tissue. I just felt that you should at least explain a more concept like the I is gone now it’s an H so he is wrong a little better. By the way I love the video, I just felt like playing devils advocate a little.
Thank you for doing such a good job explaining. I always agreed with Brecka on his lifestyle and diet stance but knew the gene testing was his cash cow.
Thank you for such a detailed review, what Test do you recommend to find out potential deficiencies and is 23 and me going to provide any of the data needed or don’t bother at all with it ?
Chris, could you make a video about sluggish thyroid? Your way to fix it. PS: I know it’s multilayer. Btw, your video about iodine and Hashimoto is probably the most important one that I have found. And believe me, I have checked like 1000 of them in recent months. Thank you 💙
Chris - if you do address thyroid , can you clarify that auto immune hashimotos is not curable with nutrition for someone who has been taking levothyroxine for decades. My understanding is that the thyroid gland cannot make thyroid hormone if they have been supplementing with external sources for an extended period of time and/or ultra sound shows that the gland is damaged.
I just found Gary today…thanks for sharing this clarification. It clarified a few things i questioned. What are your thoughts when supplements still use folic acid and /or Cyanocobalamin?
I wouldn't personally use them. Even if you don't have a gene mutation, folic acid blocks your body's methylation pathway. Folate, a natural form that is found in foods, would be better. Cyanocobalamin turns I'm to cyanide. I personally did the methylation gene test and discovered I had a slow MTHFR and COMT. I started supplementing with a methylated b vitamin complex from Garden of Life and felt like a new person. I also took a nutritional deficiency test and I was deficient in b12, which again supported the fact that I struggle with my MTHFR gene.
I love this, I wish you get more and more views so that this sharp but nuanced and detailled yet holistic way of viewing gets out more . This dedication to accuracy and nuance is what we need more of, in all areas of science ! 🙏
very informing video, I got my raw gene report from 23 and me. I had both MTHFR mutations as well as slow COMT. I have spent most my life with lots of anxiety adhd, and bouts of depression. I started to take thorn's b complex for stress and it seems to be helping my brain settle down? what's your thoughts?
There are not just 2 MTHFR mutations, there are likely hundreds of them, most of which cause absolutely no issues. (at least 100 different mutations are confirmed already).
Thank you breaking that down for us and courteously calling out misinformation ....(although I still don't understand EXACTLY what your saying specifically regarding T4 and T3, as I'm unfortunately allergic to chemistry, math, and women that constantly complain).
I like most of what Brecka says, but I was skeptical of several of his claims. I'm a firm believer that if it sounds too good to be true, it most likely is. YOUR explanations are based on absolute chemical reactions. actual proof. His free recommendations are great. Eat clean and well, get quality sleep, go outside in your bare feet, get some sunshine and breath deeply. I also think he was sincere in his desire to help people, but now he has partnered with others to "scale his business. Which to me is now both cost prohibitive AND off putting. Thank you for your honest factual review.
You explained where you believed he was wrong, in a very respectable manner. Provided decent information for your viewers. But see nothing but questions in the comments I believe this video less valuable than the one you critiqued considering you did not provide a better alternative. I see a man providing as many answers to peoples questions as he possibly can where you provided more questions with less places to get those answered. Two steps forward and one possible step back is more progress than standing there with your hands up. Thank for the video.
You were good up to the carb talk… Carbs are not essential for life. 1000s of people on KETO and Carnivore have shared their testimonies and the science backs them. On a low-carb or zero-carb diet, the liver produces exactly what is required for the brain, which is about 20% glucose, the other 80% is ketones. I have been on KETO for over 6 years, one year on strict carnivore, I felt great and I slept very very well. I switched to ketovore because I needed variety on my plate, like a salad, or cruciferous veg. Carnivore is hard to follow for me. Like I said, I feel great and sleep very well. I have lots of energy and stamina and I am in my 50’s.
It’s hard to believe the sincerity of THIS guy when he refuses to answer ANY of the comments posted. I don’t expect him to respond to EVERY question but he doesn’t clarify anything he states in this video.
One thing for me that speaks volume and not saying anyone is right or wrong, but is the fact that Brecka aint reading a script unlike you. Just saying…
Use 23 and me (the cheapest one, around 100 bucks), get your raw data, and go upload it to random sites that check for common mutations for free. Such as GenVue discovery for example. You can check for thousands of different mutations.
Glucose, like some other nutrients, like creatine, are what is called "conditionally essential" nutrients. Turns out, the conditions that make them essential are quite common. "Conditionally essential" nutrients should be considered essential.
I'm so glad I watched this video. I stumbled onto it while searching for the Brecka episode of Rogan's podcast to share with a friend. This is all very confusing to me, as I imagine it is to most any lay person. But you made the science a bit more digestible. More importantly, you exposed inaccuracies and deficiencies in Brecka's "science." Thank you for that. I will be checking out the links in the description as well as more of your content.
All I know is there is a bunch of people he helped get off medication, myself included. Take it for what you want. But the degree snobs all cheered the covid jab…. Now look at what happened.
I forwarded this to 2 male friends who bought into Brecka's $599 test to help balance out the information being presented. I thought you did an outstanding job in your kind critique or debate type delivery here to add so many other important factors a person should also consider...thank you I thought it was helpful.

@@michaelseggelink173 Totally agree with you.
You were only able to get your genes tested because of people with PhDs... 🙄
Crazy that they don't bother to correct this very important detail
This guy is killing any hope of our becoming educated beyond complicated talking heads like this schill for the FDA!
I knew this guy was full of it. You can tell he really had to struggle to get just the right angle to make this video.
I figured he was just attacking his competition but FDA hoar sounds more accurate.
Thank you for explaining this.
Love this content I wish you provided recommendations on where to go for a full genetic test and where to go to have it analyzed for supplementation advice.
Precisely what I was thinking too 👍
So, for people with the mthfr mutation what else could be recommended outside of this general knowledge:

Hey man, thanks for the video. Just wondering what to you makes a good comprehensive genetic test? Im in Australia looking to optimise my health and not really sure what to look at. Thanks
I’m in Australia too and have the same question
Wow. This is fantastic. You really formatted this well. I wish my chemistry professors were as organized as you. 😅

To the critiques in here: Brecka wasnt TRYING to cover everything for everyone in s 30 min or even couple hrs of interviews.

Thank you

Absolutely fantastic! Thanks for digging deep and laying this all out for us biochemistry noobs.

It depends. Generally yes but if you can’t make it then that’s a reason to take it.

great stuff Chris.

@@coldzero33 Not just reading, he prepared the video
Your argument from T4 to T3 is accurate the molecule itself doesn’t receive a methyl attachment while having the I cleaved so no methylation, this is where he is completely wrong.
However he may be partially correct.
- deiodinases are a class of enzyme
This enzyme cleaves iodine from molecules to make them more active for different receptors.

Good job Sir! 👊🏻💥👊🏻

I’d like to know how you think you can cure hypothyroidism, especially when one has Hashimotos?

I'm so glad I watched this video. I stumbled onto it while searching for the Brecka episode of Rogan's podcast to share with a friend. This is all very confusing to me, as I imagine it is to most any lay person. But you made the science a bit more digestible. I thought you did an outstanding job in your kind critique or debate type delivery here to add so many other important factors a person should also consider...thank you I thought it was helpful.
It’s not like they can return it 😂
