Mele kalikimaka! Aloha! It's been a long while, but at last we are back with a video that will knock your socks off! We have wanted to make this one for a while and now it's finally the right time. It's been about 6 months since we began to live out of a shipping container and have gathered experience through the different (hawaiian) seasons to come up with a list of the main pros and cons of living in the shipping container. There is a lot more that we could talk about with regards to living in a shipping container but that would make the video too long. Overall, there are many challenges to living in a rectangular metal box, but at this point in time for us the benefits outweigh the cons. If we had the option to live in something else, we would probably live in something else.
Please enjoy our list of PROS and CONS and take these into account if you plan to live out of shipping container like us. We hope this video helps and can give you some perspective. Feel free to post questions or suggestions in the comments!
Thank you very much for watching and we hope you are wrapping up 2017 with a smile on your face and excitement for the year to come.

I was born and grew up in Guatemala and the majority of roofs is like made out of metal sheets or something like that and the sound rain makes that you call noise. Is the best thing. Most relaxing thing ever. I love it.
Yes, mostly metal roofs here too.
”🤗A giant ultra heavy tent that u can live in and feel safe in!” That description helped me. I've watched so many shipping container videos but having never set foot in one & I could not wrap my brain around it. Thank you. Blessing to u both and your lovely farm 🌸
Paulina’s laugh just made my day! 😂🤣
+Maria Kesel lol it was just so funny the way Michael said "theres obviously better ways to live"
spray foam insulation will stop the sweating and do sound deading
Hey, I'm a welder and metal fabricator, I could help you put windows in if you want. Do you ever worry about some tweaker locking you in? I would have to have some kind of escape system lol.
We put a lock on the door so it can’t be closed ;)
Magic Smoke FPV : Getting locked in is indeed a scary thing . Yes , an escape hatch is something I also would have + + + . Good idea Magic S . It's the same as an escape hatch in a fallout bunker or a storm shelter .
Like a backdoor🤔
Closing the container is actually quite noisy and a strenuous physical effort. We're not too worried about that
Shocked you moved into a container with no insulation. That must be a first!
Mele Kalikimaka to you !!
We just came back from Puna (and its -13 F in Quebec... brrrr) were we bought a land !!! Yay !!
We were waiting for this video, thank you ! But we talked about it and we decided to build a small cabin to live in at the beginning. And know I am convinced after you final words and laughter... !!!
Hope to see you someday in farmers markets !
+Guillaume Beaudet I am glad this video helped you! A small cabin sounds a lot nicer :)
interesting, thanks for the cons list. Yall shedded some light on some things i wouldnt have thought of.
LOL. I like u guys. U warm my heart... I wish u 2 the best...
I'm happy to see other people comment and wanting to help you...
Thank you for sharing...this experience...
Thank you for this info - you do a great job
You guys are the best! Homesteading/living off the grid ain't easy, but what is so wonderful is that you both find time in the midst of challenges to find joy in the life you have manifested and created for yourselves. This is true wealth and happiness and I find this in your videos along with really fantastic knowledge for those of us living or wanting to live this life. Much gratitude to you both and to your land. The outtakes are pure joy and fire!! Keep doing what you are doing it is just so refreshing and empowering to me and i am sure for others.
Thank you!! 🥰🤙🏾🌈
Thank you guys, I love your vids, it keeps my dreams alive:) if you guys get down on your selves, just remember the grass is not greener on the other side, real happiness comes from within not from what you have.I cant wait I should have my house plans out of county by end of Feb 2018 for my place in Kona Paradise.
+tom tice Thank you for the kind comment and essential reminder. It's easy to forget that... Happiness is inside of us, cannot be attained from external sources. Thank you 🦋 Kona Paradise sounds lovely, all the best to you!
Loved the end!
Your videos are fun, interesting, and helpful. I like that you have put the topic in big letters so I find topics easier. Liked. Subscribed.
Mahalo 🌺
We love the two of you....raw videos are the best! Looking forward to more videos....
+Hula Shack Mahalo 💕😁 we had fun watching the outtakes for this one
You guys are so cute!! I love his laugh 😂
Love your videos literally just discovered your channel today! And you guys are not poor, you both are living a wealthy life im jealous! Thank you for making these amazing videos ❤
love this video been waiting for it!
+Shoreline Snorkel mahalo! We are glad we finally made it, it's been on our to do list for a long time
Haven't been on here for awhile, another sweet video you two.
+Harmonica Mike Merrill 🤙 thank you
Great fun, you two... A video about pros and cons and at the end....
+agnesrosalinde Thank you for the comment :) we really enjoy the bloopers the most
cool :) ive been daydreaming about living in a container lately, might actually try it
Give it a go 🤙
I just found you two. Binge watching the videos. I am inspired. I just moved to Oahu with my family and can't wait to start my garden - the planting tip are way helpful. Your channel is what I didn't know I needed. Now I will give you some unsolicited opinion. The authentic style and "lead by example" vibe is very refreshing. Many folks on the old UA-cam get very tiresome with ideological diatribes and such. I suspect if people are watching two, low tech, off-grid, fruitarians - they likely already "get it." Keep being awesome - keep being you. I wish you all the best and BIG harvests. Perhaps we will run into each other sometime on the islands. Big Mahalo for the videos. P.S. I Love the outtakes in this video.
Big mahalo for the nice comment. I'm happy we can inspire you to start growing in your garden! 🙏🤙
hello over there, i just bumped into your video, liked it a lot! wish for both of you the BEST in 2020 ! greeting from Canada!
Thank you! 🤙✨
My house is a container house in Hawaiian Acres. Good video. Hopefully you can get someone to help you with windows and ceiling fans. They make a huge difference. We rolled out vinyl sheet flooring then cocking around the edges. It looks and works great.
I love your videos and honesty. Keep it up 💜
Laminate flooring is not a good idea in this climate, redwood would be nice though👍🏽. We have no plans of putting in any other flooring though. The plywood looks good enough for us.
My fave couple! 🤙🏼🤙🏼
+navicuevas 😁🤙
Forget the mansion......you have freedom!!!!
Just some ideas to think about,,,,, if you have enough electricity get a dehumidifier to cut out the condensation and mold growth. I'm pretty sure they don't use much electricity and can dramatically cut out the moisture. Or maybe get another solar panel, then you could get a tiny air conditioner. Not sure how hard it would be to get a small hole for the air conditioner, but I would do it if i was living in a warm climate.
It'll look ghetto, but you could buy a cheap tarp and put it a few feet off the container to block the sun rays or find a material that doesn't look getto.
I'm not sure i understood the pesticide thing. Couldn't you just power wash the metal floor. And if the floor is wood, couldn't you just rip out the pesticide wood and put down your own floor?
Also forgot.....get some ear plugs for the rain and other noises. It takes a few days to get used to them, i forgot the brand i use but i couldn't live without them!!!!
+RAW FOOD PHILOSOPHY we stayed in a mansion in July and it was so awesome! Haha but what made it beautiful was mostly the outside natural aspects and how they were integrated beautifully into the architecture of the home, especially the giant windows looking out into the lake. And there was a lot of room for privacy and also social gathering. But nature on its own is pretty cool too :)
There is a lot we could do with more electric power, but we are trying to keep costs down for now and suffer accordingly for our lack of money. We are trying to shade the wall of the container with a lilikoi trellis we have growing next to it. The sun still hits it from the higher angles though. What we really need is a large roof to cover the whole thing, or partially and add a deck or garden up there to insulate even more. We still have ghetto tarps all over thiugh so we are very familiar with that haha.
The pesticides are on the wood that makes up the majority of the floor. It doesn't come off, the only way would be to remove the floors and put in new floor but we are not going to do that because Michael doesn't think it's necessary. And if it was, it would probably be expensive.
+RAW FOOD PHILOSOPHY we've already gotten used to the sounds outside, the worse thing is making too much obnoxious sounds from inside the container. Opening and closing the doors is especially obnixious, and also walking around in flip flops.
OffGridHawaii Michael Pauline there are several options that are low cost to minimize the interior noise which you find obnoxious, Try Ace Hardware or Home Depot and get some wallpaper glue and it comes in a gallon or 5 gallons brush and roller squeegee utility knife. now instead of wallpaper go down to Goodwill or thrift store and purchase a variety of sheets these you will cut into either one foot squares or long strips bigger Square smaller squares triangles your choice your design use your creativity maybe even cut one into the shape of a pineapple or heart or orchid personal touch as to how you want it to look when you apply them directly to the walls of the shipping container maybe a certain pattern around the top Edge of the wall with a different pattern 8 or 9 in below it always looks good all up to you and now if you do that you paint that up or strip and the ceiling one or two colors and from that point down you could paint any color or multiple sponge colors be creative don't forget if you cut out a pineapple as part of the wallpaper paint it make it standout have fun personalize it ,it will feel more like home. .. at Home Depot or Ace Hardware ask for mismatch discount paint maybe a couple different colors, try to use an exterior low Sheen or eggshell acrylic water base this is mold resistant and is very durable,,, side note make sure you use a quality wallpaper glue because of the high moisture content in your area like a bathroom type of wallpaper glue !!! I just remembered Habitat for Humanity has what's called The ReStore not sure if it's located in Kona or Hilo this is the store where everybody donates construction materials new and used that also have paint windows appliances lighting a variety of building materials look online to see where it is located you may find plumbing parts Etc that you can use their in the garden and home. I recently found a brand new stove oven combo for less than $200 it was brand new and came out of a model home, it also come with the propane conversion orifice kit that is taped on the back of the oven what a bonus we installed this at one of our rental homes,,,,, oops okay I'm getting long-winded again just enjoy your day be creative with your home ! and if a big motorhome comes driving up on the property don't shoot they come with tools supplies and plenty of knowledge to help you guys improve build expand your little castle. Laugh out loud now that would be a UA-cam show,,,...PAUL
+Paul Torres Lol thanks Paul
We have a high cube 20 foot container that we did insulate and added vents and we do not have condensation inside. The insulation makes a huge difference and now we have a ceiling fan inside which keeps the air circulating. We had to frame with metal studs before insulating so it has been a long process. When we are finished with it we could have you come over and do a video of our “custom” container. It wasn’t cheap but we’ve worked at it gradually over a couple of years.
That's awesome, you're on big island?
I'm one step from making the decision to move into a container, but I'm saving money to at get it proper insulated . Winters in NY aren't easy so I won't risked it . Thanks for your videos .
Yeah it gets cold in our container and it's only a low of 60 degrees here.. so definitely would need good insulation in winter climate
Yes I emailed you about getting a few plants from you - friends of F and M.
Nice pad!!! Really admire the life style 🌴
+lokatelis311 Aloha, thank you for the kind words :)
I’ve seen people with really cool hand crank blenders you guys should get one!! Love your videos :-)
Absolutely. And manual juicers. They make sense for many reasons, even in a normal home. It takes a lot of power to grind up something without oxidation and doing it yourself bring a level of control that you just don't have with a machine. Not sure how long it takes though. Wheatgrass takes a while but that's about as tough a vegetable one could possibly consider.
hey Michael Pauline good to see that you're both in great health. you have the no-cost option of dampening the rain fall noise on the roof by covering with Palm leaves layered completely a cross then strategically place lava rocks or bamboo poles to keep in place from wind blowing off ! On the sunny side of the wall make your bamboo lattice and weave in Palm leaves I first did this when I built an outside aviary it lasted about 2 years with very little maintenance and then I went with a vinyl heavy-duty awning tarp used for RVs as far as the Heat and mold look into what is called a fantastic vent these are used in the roof of RVs they are 12 volt and would be perfect for your solar and Battery system setup it has forward and reverse fan automatic open and closing during rain look into the different prices different styles although you will have to cut a 14 X 14 in hole and use exterior silicone caulking to seal in place from rain. John that sells the shipping containers should be very familiar with these and if too expensive, keep that coconut and banana handy cuz that will be my service charge to put it in for you guys. I think you may have me convinced on bringing over my 32 foot motorhome and just driving it up to the property and living in it while I build the Cottages , great informative video as always Michael Pauline, Lookout Pauline your sister's Got Game her numbers are climbing up there L.O.L not if she happens to pass you up you better have Michael bust out that hula hoop. Haha.!!! stay healthy stay safe stay warm stay happy guys !!! happy holidays. Paul and Jill
+Paul Torres thank you for the wonderful insights and tips Paul. We are still waiting for you guys to make it over to big island some day and we can meet up :) we hope the holidays are going well for you guys.
Bring this content back!!! We miss y'all!!!
Thanks for the info, I figured I would get a decent storage shed, that way I could do my crafts in it
+Gizmo The Cat With a map glad you found this useful 🤙
If you're looking for a way to solve the acoustics problem in your container, you could always try using acoustic wedge foam to help dampen the sound dramatically, but you'd probably need to solve your humidity issue first, foam is a really great place for mold when damp.
Got an offer to live in Fern Forest in a 20’ container, the roof was something I was worried about and a carport would solve that and for collecting water.
Thanks!
You can borrow, rent, or purchase a grinder at local home depot or Lowe's to cut you some windows and another door just make sure you get the dimensions of doors and windows correct and level also get yourself some grid paper each square = a foot you can draw out the floor plan where everything will windows doors . Put yourselfs a nice coverd deck patiodoor a row of cabinets in for a kithen! do a dormer extension to increase bedroom size, or ad 8-10 feet to one of the 40 ft side INSULATE YOU COULD HAVE A BEAUTIFUL LITTLE SPOT ! film it all we would love to see it!
Thank you for the recommendations :) we have not done any remodelling or extending of the container yet because we are not fully committed to the location it is at on the property and we want to maintain it's integrity until we have a real clear plan of what we wish to do with it. We are leaning towards just starting a new small home from scratch on a different spot and keeping the container as an extra living and storage space.
Awesome, am considering living in a container home, it's not popular in Kenya where am from but, I think its really cost effective and unique.
If you can get one for cheap it’s not a bad idea 👍🏽
I believe the isolation would keep the temperature stable, so no condensation. And it will help with sound.
insulation*
You can just put some shade on that wall and roof so the shade absorbs the heat instead of the container. You could make it cheap out of camo or canvas from a military surplus.
You'd probably also want at least two of them and make it a double wide. You can make a welder from a couple of microwaves. I saw some Russians do it in flip flops.
Looks clean inside and i bet it saves you lots of money living
My green mind processed that "doing whatever that's loud" pretty quick. 😆
😆 anything is considered loud though inside the container
I should get one
Great video new subscriber
+nyla tawiah thanks! 🤙🤙
How often do u get bit by fire ants..?
You guys are cool ✌
🤓
Are Ticks a problem there ? Great video
Aloha, thank you. Ticks are not a problem on the island as far as I'm concerned. But I did just hear that they have seen some that carry some disease (not Lyme) although I'm not sure on details but I can ask. The tick that infected Paulina was from the mainland most likely because she got ill the day after coming back to big island from NY.
A couple questions: What do you do at night? Do you close the door and lock yourselves in? Or do you have a way to leave the door part way open but secured so you get some fresh air? How much did your property taxes go up from when you just had land to after adding the contain to the land?
At night we sleep with the door slightly ajar, it can't be locked from the inside. I think the taxes have stayed the same.
Thanks for the reply. Did you need / get a building permit for the container?
+Frederick Henderson we did not, we don't need one for ours. It depends what you're building if you need a permit.
Great question.
What site did you go to purchase the shipping container?
Love it
+Josh OB thanks 😁✨
Add vents around your container house up the top. It will help with the air circulation and brings in the fresh air. Add a security door screen so you can leave it open at night for fresh air. It will keep the mossies and bugs out. Your container house is lovely, Maybe invest in some secondhand corrugated iron to cover the top. You can add a gutter to catch the water too.
Thanks for the tips! There are tiny vents on all four corners at the top I think I’m going to make them a little bigger and install a 12volt fan on one or maybe two of them. Covering the whole container would definitely be great too but maybe a bit expensive. It would be great to catch more water though so probably worth it. 😊
What about running to the bathroom in middle of night, or in rain, first thing in morning or even when you get that feeling in your gut telling you to get to a toilet?
+Gizmo The Cat With a map it's about a 45 second hike from the container to the toilet, so not too far. At night we bring a light, and when it rains we bring an umbrella. It's a fun adventure every time. If it's an immidiate emergency I guess we could always just pop a squat next to a tree nearby and bury it. We pee in a bucket next to the container so that's never an issue.
That is awesome. Who did you purchase the container from?
Big island containers
Great video from both of you, as usual! Thanks!
As for the toxic wood flooring, you can buy tile from Home Depot for less than $1/foot, and seal it up with tile and the tile cement, maybe?!?
+Bri Ha thank you for the suggestion, for now we will leave it as is and focus on other aspects of the container. That's a great idea though, I think if we really felt the need to fix the issue we would just remove the floors altogether and start fresh though.
@@OffGridHawaii I suppose you have so much ventilation with the doors open there that you don't feel the need. Small windows that nobody can craw into that you can leave open would be very good when you're not there. Windows that have a little awning perhaps to protect against rain. Or erect some sort of shade for the entire roof and have overextend over those high mounted windows. If you ever figure out how to make a proper shade for a shipping container you might even be able to patent part of the idea. Surely most people need this no matter where they live. If they don't have a lot of rain they probably have to deal with merciless sun. If they don't have sun they probably have to deal with a deluge of rain at times. Everybody needs shade from the elements. Its fundamental. Insulation is ridiculous in a tropical environment and, as you mentioned, may soak up moisture. The goal in the tropics is always moisture reduction. Doing an image search for
"shipping container" shade or shading
brings up interesting results.
Here's an interesting shade idea but it wouldn't hold up to much strong wind.
i.pinimg.com/originals/e0/a8/13/e0a813db41b51038408c689658bf64d7.jpg
and these
portaroof.com.au/gallery for rigid options.
www.buildshippingcontainerhouse.com/images/sunroofroofing%20005.jpg
Looking at a lot of these images its very clear most people are not addressing this very pressing need - to shade their container. The key to this working is anchoring the vertical posts to the shipping container.
Clearly anyone versed in metal fabrication would have immense advantages when making a home in a shipping container. I get the impression you two are pretty bright. Probably wouldn't take long to learn the basics to get started. Being able to cut that metal, repair that metal, modify that metal....that would be a huge bonus. One problem, being offgrid, is powering tools that draw so much power.
@@bobhoskins9595 Great advice. I was thinking the same thing about the small windows with an awning and screens to keep fresh air flowing all the time.
Hi, I love your videos. Do you know anybody can build a tiny house in big Island?
I hear there’s a guy called lucky on the island but I don’t have his contact info.
thank you
They sound like they smoke weed everyday
You sound like you smoke weed everyday
Good come back love 😂😂😂
OffGridHawaii ur sooo sexy in those glasses
They-er probably growing it.
No they don't but you're funny in a good way. Thanks!
How do you lock it from the inside?
Have you considered painting the south side white to reflect the sun? Also I read somewhere that anytime you cut a shipping container, it compromises the structural integrity because the strength of its structure comes from the corrugated shape of the sides. So they said you had to build a frame and use beams to secure it. Just something to keep in mind
Thought about it but didn’t want to go blind
@@OffGridHawaii Lol!!!!!!!
why not add add short and wide windows (too small for someone to fit into near the roof for light and ventilation?
+Christopher Johnson that sounds nice actually, we just don't have any metal work experience or tools so we just haven't bothered. I'm sure we'd consider it once we make more progress on the construction around the container. Ventilation is so essential.
Absolutely. Small square windows make relying on window bars unnecessary. Just pick a size that is very common there. Also installing them high has many advantages. Its nice having light coming down on you - seems more natural. Consider installing some in the roof perhaps with light diffusers for lots of natural light though if you shade the roof that would be redundant. Mounting high on the walls is good as well to let risen hot air escape.
You shipped a container with all your tools and other personal things? From where did you ship it from the mainland? how much was the shipping and did they allow you to fill it up and then send it all to your land? Please help. Thanks.
No we bought the container on island.
A lot of people do ship all their belongings in a container and that makes sense since getting new stuff on island will cost a lot more. I recommend researching local shipping container place near you and asking them directly. We have no idea how much it would cost.
Aloha guys! Where did you buy your driveway gate and how much?
Aloha. We bought it at Home Depot and it cost around $200 or $300 can’t remember that well
If you feel the need to remove that floor you then have a nice choice on what type of wood for that new floor . Cedar would not rot and would decrease the insect population . Removal of the old floor would also give yourselves a chance at cleaning under the floor .
Floor removal might be a future project ⭐
Good Luck ………..
Hi, just found your channel, you said you wanted security so no windows, but you can make fake windows, just a frame with a picture behind, if you want to add curtains it just adds to the effect.
Lol we have a nice calendar of pretty landscapes that kind of gives it an effect haha. The main reason for real windows would be for more ventilation and natural light
You guys are the most adorable savages
+Andy Baldassar that's a beautiful compliment ^_^ mahalo 🤙
Paint it white or chrome to reflect the heat
✅
Is chrome much better than white? You'd think so but I wonder how well it really works. Surely its more expensive though? For a 45' container that's a lot of paint.
You guys are so funny. Love your videos. Are you planning to insulate it?
+Martin DeLeon Aloha, thank you for the compliment 😁 At this time we are not planning to insulate it in the conventional sense. Probably just try to shade it as much as possible.
Why not rig a frame around the shipping container and shade it with scrap wood? If you could get free pallets you wouldn't have to pay for most of the wood. You could use a tarp but I'm not sure how the wind is there. Surely you get strong winds occasionally? If you could anchor vertical posts to the container itself you'd have rigidity. But you probably want overhang. Once its shaded I think many of your problems will be solved: Dampness from the rain (though the overall humidity will be the same) and huge temperature variations from sun exposure.
Great idea.
Your not poor, be patient and I truly believe it will pay off. You have 3 huge acres to work with! Make extra money and rent a section out temporary. I'd love to rent a section and offer some skills. I'm also a musician and want to test my guitar amp in the container at full volume, haha. That would be funny though... wake up all of Hilo, hahahahahhaa
This isn’t about this video but was hoping to ask a question. I just dropped my truck off at Matson in California. They originally told me 8 days. But now they told me it could be up to 20 days before it was ready to be picked up. How long did it take for your car to get to the BI?
+Benjamin S Aloha, we have not shipped any cars or anything big to the island so we can't offer any advice on that... Hopefully it gets resolved for you!
OffGridHawaii gotcha , thank you
Just wanted to update if anyone on here wanted to know. It took about 2.5 weeks to get to BI from Cali
+Benjamin S thanks for the update brah!
I noticed you made what looks like a small Jean Pain biomass mound to heat some water. If so, is that small of a mound effective in making enough hot water for a shower?
+Robert Morrison the mound is not very effective at producing hot water for a nice shower, yet... So far we've been using it to run the sink water for washing dishes, it makes it warm enough that it's comfortable to wash the dishes when it gets cold outside. We are planning to have a separate one for the shower and make it much bigger
OffGridHawaii how nice that you are getting enough heat to do dishes. I would think a mound about 6 feet tall should provide you with all the hot water you need. Jean Pain used his to not only heat water, but also to create heat to operate an anerobic digester to make biogas.
+Robert Morrison thanks, yeah we definitely need a much bigger pile for a nice shower
OffGridHawaii maybe contact a tree trimmer and ask them if they chip up the cuttings they produce and what it would take to get some delivered.
+Robert Morrison yeah we have just been getting the free mulch at the county dump... Would wood chips be better you think?
For the sound problem put thick sheets or blankets to dampen the noise
That would look pretty silly 😁 bit yeah, some insulation would definitely help with the sound problem.
great video guys! my hubby and i love watching your videos! we are living vicariously threw you guys till we save enough money to buy our own piece of paradise......."we are almost there":) .we watch you guys ,gytis, and alyse and addison when ever a new video posts we joke that we have new hawaii porn to watch!lol i saw on another video that you guys popped over to a viewers land and helped them out i was wondering if i could hire you guys to check out a piece of land for us. we think we found the"place" but i would love to see a video of the land.we live in nj so its a hike and a decent cost when we go to the big island so when we buy i may not be on island.if you are interested in being hired let me know i dont have booku bucks but would pay you no doubt!im just looking for a video of the land its in fern acres if you guys want contact me and well work out something.Mele kalikimaka guys!!!

Hi there,
My question is for Paulena... my daughter also has Lyme disease and has been very ill for almost 3 yrs. May I ask how you contracted it and what treatment you received in getting healthier? PS, I just love your funny laughter. Are you and boyfriend from the mainland too? Thx for both your time, Dean..
Hi Dean, so sorry to hear your daughter has Lyme. I got sick with Lyme symptoms in the beginning of September of last year while in hawaii. I still don't know how I contracted it but I did spend the summer in the Northeast. I saw a local doctor and was diagnosed by the end of October (my Western blot and Elisa test both came back very positive). The doctor I saw is naturopathic but also uses some Western medicine. For me, she said the best thing would be to get on a 1 month course of doxycycline taking two pills a day. I was hesitant but complied with her treatment because I felt very helpless as you know. In conjunction with the antiobiotics the doctor also prescribed several supplements and herbs. I was taking zinc, ashwaganda, licorice root, Ester-C, grapefruit seed extract, cats claw and several others which I don't remember off the top of my head. Additionally, during the month of november I received two Meyer Push treatments (intravenous vitamins ) to boost all my levels and kickstart my immune system. All of this protocol was done while maintaining a high fruit, mostly raw vegan diet with supplemental vegan protein powder each day. I also rested and slept a lot of the time. By the start of December I was feeling no more muscle/joint pain and was able to move around without trouble. It took me until January to finally start feeling normal and begin to exercise like before. Right now I feel incredible. I lost some extra weight I'd been carrying since before getting sick, and my strength is coming back tenfold.
I hope this helps in any way. I would also like to mention that a big part of my healing came from having faith and trusting in God. I cried every night and prayed to the angels for help. A book which really motivated me was Anthony Williams Medical Medium. He doesn't believe Lyme is a tick-borne disease and that it's actually a virus of the herpes family that has the bacteria and parasite as cofactors. Because of this he doesn't condone using antiobiotics and instead suggests herbs and supplements plus diet changes. I took a lot of his advice in addition to using the antiobiotics and that seems to be what worked for me. If you get a chance I highly encourage you to read the book's chapter on Lyme's disease or if you can listen to one of his podcasts on soundcloud (Google sound cloud Anthony William Lyme). It talks about the diagnosis for Lyme and how it can be inaccurate in the first place.
If you have more questions you can reach me at aloha.offgridhawaii@gmail.com
Sending you and your daughter lots of love!
Yes don't trust everything he says but it offers a unique perspective.
DYINGGG
+Cotezi Hikes 😁 I'm happy you were dying too hehehe now go edit your desert video!
Why not put a composting toilet inside your container? ‘Off Grid with Doug and Stacy’ have great UA-cam videos on that topic! Also, check out Paul Chamber’s YT videos of his shipping container home modifications! His vids are very informative, too!!
+Bri Ha we prefer having the toilet far away from the container :) thanks for the suggestions!
If you are looking to build a shipping container to code in Hawaii County I would advise against it as the county knows nothing about the engineering of a shipping container and makes you meet all the requirements of a stick frame house adding thousands to the cost. I figured I would do it all legal and but the time I'm done I could have put up one of the kit houses available on the island for very little more and had four times the living space.
Civic regulation can kill most any dream. Thank you for sharing. So important to consider. We can have all the dreams imaginable but actually bringing them to fruition without drawing the ire of the local red tape committee can be another matter entirely. This is the reason many people leave cities in the first place; they find them so restrictive to their construction ideas.
I'm glad you made this video but I wouldn't be a SCH candidate.
I am sorry about the Lyme disease. You could get your blood tested for the specific pesticide in the floor to see if it is in your system and possibly causing Lyme disease.
Are y'all going to make a bigger home out of multiple containers? Maybe I missed that video??
+Ana Shelton Hi Ana, we don't have any set plans on making a bigger home with more containers. Having experienced living in one container, in the future, if we were to expand the house we would most likely use wood materials. :) But yeah, we would like to expand the liveable area around the container eventually!
OffGridHawaii thanks for the reply. It 32 and rainy in Eden and I'm pretty sick. Dreaming about being back on the big island. We bought a school bus last year to live in, can u tell me if that is popular there? I'm digging the shipping containers but we have 7 kids so we would need 2 or 3. We are looking for land to do something similar there soon. I appreciate your videos. Thanks!
@@anashelton7104 Many people seem to use one or two containers as a framework to build out from. This only works in warm climates of course where no air conditioning or heating would be needed and the vast majority of time is spent outside or in outdoor air. But the rigidity of the container is a great thing to use and anchor things from.
WHERE Y'ALL AT!!??
+Christopher Palme we were sucked in deep into the big island jungle vortex! Haha sorry.. we probably need a good update video soon.
You guys should encase the shipping container in aircrete and the would insulate the place. Let me know if you like to hear about it.
That sounds ... complicated. But please say more :)
Well, Aircrete is a mix of cement water and Soap Foam. and it is fully castiable so you put up plywood about 8" from the outside of the container and extend above top by about 8" so when the mix reaches the top of walls it would form the roof.
I'm working a making self aligning building blocks I call Butterfly Blocks cast from aircrete. I'm building the molds now to cast 5 blocks at a time. that are standard Concrete block size.
The only people that do commercial aircrete is on the Big Island but they use it to build domes made of aircrete. But they might have a foam generator to rent and then just have a readymix truck come with a cement water mix and add the foam once the truck comes and spin the foam in while the mix is in the truck. then pump it up into the forms.
Yeah we've heard of those guys at dome Gaia. Still I don't think it'd be worth the effort to encase the shipping container, might as well just make a whole separate air Crete house no?
...Be poor its not about money...You guys are great.. 😎 👍
What part of Hawaii?
Puna big island
OffGridHawaii very cool we’re in Mountain View.
Wow ! you're great ! I wish those homeless people in ohuao could do the same with the help by the State of Hawaii
Are you affected by the recent volcano eruption & 6.9 magnitude earthquake ?
Yep, not physically but mentally and emotionally. I guess there's some gases in the air too that could be dangerous. The active lava eruptions are bout 10 miles away
LOL
I now will not get a shipping container, thank you for the information.
I wish I was Your neighbor. Please, how much do 2x4's and plywood cost, and is there a building store nearby?
We get most of that stuff at Home Depot in Hilo just a few miles away. 1 sheet of plywood costs about 18 bucks last time I checked. I forgot the price on the 2x4s but I'm sure you could call them and inquire about prices. Argus Lumber in Hilo also supplies these things. Can Google and call them too.
$6.25 for 8' 2x4 treated with borate. 16' $12. (Argus )
thank You, I'm trying to make it there on little money, but I can build so I might do a little hut.
The $18 ply is untreated 1/2. The ply we used for the cabin floor was $55 3/4 t&g treated with borate.
sounds great, I was afraid building supplies were more. I could build a very small hut for 500, not secure though.
Hey did you say you got Lyme from living in the container?
Nice space! Hope you spend 98% of your time outside 😎🌴
+Caitlyn O'Fly I did imply that.. but I don't actually blame the container for giving me lyne disease. From research I've gathered, mainly just listening to what Anthony William says, it's possible that certain environments can trigger off Lyme symptoms because it's actually a virus that feeds off of environmental toxins. So in the container it's got pesticides on the floor and some mold because of the humidity, so with a weakened immune system the virus thrives off of those things. I think as long as I keep my immune system in good health and try to lower my viral load with herbs and healthy foods I can stave off Lyme disease. It's kind of a theory though, I don't believe anything 100%
Sorry to hear that :(
+The Art of Everything ☹️ it's okay though because I actually feel pretty amazing now 💖
OffGridHawaii that’s awesome news!
Have you both tried ACV everyday just to keep healthy?
Are you both looking for place with low rent, use of kitchen, etc? Let me know.Aloha
+The Art of Everything We don't drink Acv... It's too irritating. Our main way of keeping healthy is fruits, vegetables and fresh air 😎
Not sure what your question is... We don't need a place to rent at the moment thanks :) You have a place? Maybe if we have friends or family visiting we can let them know. 🤙
Spray foam your walls and buy vinyl liquid floor.
Do you poo outside?
Yep 😎 (our compost toilet is outside)
You two are sweet!

"When you dont have an handy-man"
10k and a lot of work invested in the container and you would have a tiny mansion. As it is is just a shipping container with no living conditions.
Stop the rehearsing. Just be yourselves. lol
+LionKing hahah we have to practice because there's certain things we went to say and we want to say them as concisely as possible. Talking, especially to a camera does not come very naturally for both of us.
I would get a better lock dude. Those locks are very easy to pick. Someone could get in and out without breaking anything. As for the temperature and condensation, you just need the right kind of insulation (a kind that won't allow for mold if correctly installed). Half an hour on the internet should get you going. Noise could also be reduced by proper insulation. The floor could be fixed with... Yep. Proper insulation (and better flooring as a product of that). I'm not trying to be an ass, but a lot of your problems could be fixed with the internet and some tools. It just seems like you were being lazy and then counting the products of your laziness as cons. The only one I'll give you is the dimensions of a standard container. Some people (like myself) will consider that a good thing though. The standard dimensions make it relatively easy to legally transport. It is a shipping container after all.
You bring up great points. It’s definitely not us being lazy though, it’s us being cheap. Yes most of the cons can be fixed by spending a whole lot of money but then why not just build a regular house? I definitely don’t think you are being an ass. We appreciate the honesty. -mahalo
I am planning on building out of a shipping container as a mobile alternative to an apartment and have done a fair bit of research because of that. I guess if you don't want to use it long term, you don't need to dump that much money into it. I will say that some closed cell spray foam on the inside and an air conditioner are worth your money though. The foam would keep condensation from forming. Considering that you put effort into solar and water, it wouldn't be crazy. If you wanted to have something small and cheap that would last, it would depend on if you plan on leaving it where you build it, or if you want to move it. If you don't plan on moving, you don't need a single shipping container. You could build a much bigger place for not that much extra overall. There are many channels here on youtube that show you how to do just that. It sounds like you guys are going to be there for a while.
@@OffGridHawaii You could paint the sunny side white to reflect the heat!
Seems like you coyld be locked in
lol You guys are gonna have some interesting looking kids...
Why? Please elaborate
@@OffGridHawaii I think she means your kids will have interesting lives because their parents are unconventional and resourceful thinkers.
LOL how high are these guys!
High on life 🙃🙂
"dont be poor like us"....not sure you realize how rich you are. spray foam, spiral staircase and roof deck will solve condensation and noise problems.
