Aloha! We're back with another video. This one not so fun, since upon coming back to Big Island from our trip to Cali we discovered the inside of our shipping container was filled with mold in the ceiling and floors. It was disappointing, but we figured it would be a good opportunity to make a video to show you guys the reality of living in such a wet climate inside of a shipping container.
In the video we discuss the reasons why the mold developed, and how we can fix the situation. We hope you enjoy our corny sense of humor in this video; if you couldn't tell, we were very tired from all the traveling we had been doing and then having to clean up a big mess afterwards.

White vinegar mixed 50/50 with water is also really good at killing mold. I used to use it on my plants because it was safe, and it killed mold really well. Bleach and water also works well to clean mold off of stuff.

Hi guys, Thank you so much for this video! I'm really glad that you go into detail and tell us so much. It's really interesting that you mentioned that the part of your roof, that is covered with the tarp, didn't grow any mold, and that even just a tarp has made such a difference! That is brilliant to know! I plan on building a container house this year and mold / condensation / rust is one of my biggest worries. My plan is to paint the roof with a rubberized non toxic paint and then insulate with with insulation blanket , before putting on a pitched roof, that will serve dual purpose, as the correct pitch for the solar panels and for rain water harvesting. Having watched your video, I am now really confident, that my plan should work great to prevent condensation on the ceiling of the container. Thanks again 👍👍👍

Remove all your stuff . Then apply mold x. You can find it at home depo. After that drys up paint the walls with killz. Then you need to install mechanical ventilation. Coupled with a dehumidifier. Plus you want to spend the extra cash on building materials that are pressure treated . You should think about framing the inside and using spray foam that's a insect repellent as well. The vapor barrier coupled with the mechanical ventilation will stop all the mold in your house.

I've often wondered how we made it without a/c when I was young. I remember the attic fan running constantly. I guess the air flow prevented mold. A good organic remedy for the roaches is boric acid powder. It needs to be spread very lightly or it will not work effectively.

I knew mold would be a problem when I moved here, but I wasn't prepared enough. The mold happens quickly and is hard to kill! It's an ongoing battle! We recently purchased Zep Clear shell, which is supposed to prevent mold from growing on surfaces for 6 months. I read about it on Puna Web. I haven't tried it, but we got it at the Home Depot in Hilo.

...also try using a compact Dehumidifier, usually for use in cars but works well also on areas wherein there is dampness around. It comes in a pack of 4 so you can place each one convenietly in different areas of your home especially if you're going out for a longer period of time. It says n the package "helps stop damp, mold & condensation, eliminates odor & freshens air and fully absorbs moisture..." I have 2 in my room, so far so good...hope this help you guys...

my sister in law used to use these bags that you hang and they collect moisture. I think she got them at bed bath and beyond they are a one-time use but work could be a good idea when your mainlanding it.

Hey guys , I have found using a product called “Damp Rid” moisture absorbing pouches are a good investment while container is closed and I’m away for long times. But Paulina had it right about the exposed part of container.

Open a window a little bit on each end of the home when not in use. We have to do this to our rv when not used for the season

Damp rid comes in hanging pouches or you can buy the 64 oz tub at the Kona Lowe's. When you have to leave the shipping container closed up, you should buy the tub and poke holes in the bottom and find a way to let the moisture it collects drip into a bucket with a lid or some other sealed container so it doesn't evaporate back into the air in your container house while you are gone. If there are any air vents at all, (my 40 foot container has small vents in the upper corners) you should tape them over or use some other method to keep moist air from getting into your sealed shipping container once the Damp Rid has done its job.

@OffGridHawaii Mold is a result of a combination of poor ventilation, and condensation/humidity. Black mold, or stachybotrys, is very toxic. It doesn't appear you have that kind of mold, but I would strongly suggest you have it tested to be sure.

I use Lysol disinfectant spray or it's liquid variant whenever I have mold infestation or that sort. It works for me, hope it will work for you as well...

Home Depot sells paint especially for wet conditions. It has antimicrobal properties in the paint which prevent mold from growing. Valspar is one brand that sells it.
