You two are perfectly suited for the Big Island in my opinion. Your needs are minimal. You've taken a piece of land and made it productive and beautiful. You are in the right place.

Where on the Big Island do you two live? What Part?
I am Hawaiian. Kanaka. Just ignore all the negative locals. They're just jealous or racist. All are welcome in the Hawaiian Islands. We all belong to one race, the human race. We welcome all. We need all types here on the islands. You two are now Kama'aina.
Enjoy your life and continue your venture here on the island. Mahalo.

Aloha! Nice to hear from you guys. I was born and raised in North Carolina but my wife is Native Hawaiian so I definitely understand the tension that you speak of. I think you guys made great points about people educating themselves about Hawaii and being aware of your impact here. My wife always says that people who move here should be knowledgeable about Hawaiian culture and think about how they can support Hawaiians. One of the main issues we see is how self-serving so many people that come here can be. They have no concept of kuleana and no interest in pilina. This seems to be the source of a lot of tension. Anyway, mahalo for talking about a difficult subject. Aloha!

"A human is a human no matter where they are." I love how you shared about your background. My husband and I found your videos when we were planning a visit to the Big Island last year. One of the reasons we binge watched all your videos is because of how relaxed and real you are. Its refreshing. Also, you've inspired us to start growing our own food and exploring things that will grow back every year. Thank you for your videos, and your respect for the land and the people.

Your videos on growing your own food are pretty valuable though. We never realized how crucial it was to have our own food until we had to survive on wild green papayas outside our house, to avoid the large crowds at the supermarket.

Well hey I miss you guys. I am glad you are back filming, and I struggle with many of the same issues you folks are dealing with, except feeling guilty about influencing others. I think that is the MOST POWERFUL effect you can have on everyone. I try to teach the things I know, and from the feedback I get I want to continue teaching and sharing. I have thought about filming less myself lately, and my audience has spoken enough to encourage me to keep going. I am planning on coming to Hilo at the end of summer, but have no fear, I was thinking about it before you guys. I love what you are doing and how you are doing it. Keep going, I will keep watching!!

Nobody visits Hawaii or sees a postcard and does not imagine living there. Your videos are entertaining/entertainment and you should treat them as such. I follow people on UA-cam sailing the world, I follow spear fishermen from Florida, free divers from Australia, beekeepers in Georgia and the list goes on... you should not feel guilty over your videos! I enjoy gardening, topical fruit and warm weather. living in Hawaii would be a dream but it's very likely not going to happen. I will however most likely return to my native tropical country when I retire in the not so distant future. I feel that I can learn a lot from watching your methods of growing fruits and vegetables as well as from others. Thank you for your honesty I hope you continue making videos.

Been missing your videos and always enjoy them immensely. Totally understand your reasons for taking a brake. I'm introverted myself. I find your videos to be informative, educational and a source of entertainment. It's an escape for me to learn about life, nature and culture on the Big Island and hear from your unique perspective. By all means, do not feel guilty about what others say or may do. People generally are wishfully thinking when the dream. There are so many positives that your videos produce. It's important to take a break for all the reasons you stated. Perhaps with a little spontaneity here and there, that may help reduce the time it takes to prep videos. Such as live streaming or shorter subjects. Just a thought. Aloha from Virginia.

"What are humans to do in terms of migration?" Beautiful question and closely related to the one I often think on which is, "What does it mean to be indigenous or native to a place?" I was born and raised on the Big Island. My family has been here for six generations and "own" land in Hamakua. I have cousins, nephews and nieces who are Native Hawaiian but I myself am not. If you get a chance and haven't yet, read "In the Footsteps of Nanabozho: Becoming Indigenous to Place" a chapter in the book BRAIDING SWEETGRASS by Robin Wall Kimmerer, I believe she has the best response to your question and mine that I've ever come across.

One of your videos just popped up in my stream and I remembered that I enjoyed watching your videos a few years ago. I didn't watch this one entirely, because at some point I got the gist of it. I just want to say this: living in the Caribbean with a very similar climate, your videos have been an excellent resource. Don't feel responsible for people wanting to move to Hawaii, because at some point you move somewhere else because you want a better life. What can be wrong about that?
I hope things turn around for you all, and that you will soon find the inspiration, energy and ideas to put more content out there. If anything, you might see all of this as a path towards great new things...

I’m Native Hawaiian from Big Island....I don’t “look” like one...but have been coming for 45 years for months at a clip. I’m a “snowbird” coming from NJ. I think you are both an inspiration! I’m on all kinds of Environmental groups and I’m a Bee Keeper and Organic Farmer 👩🏽‍🌾 for a hobby. You two work hard, I’m inspired...to go the extra mile organically. Off grid is not for faint of heart. I’m in Waikaloa, and moan whoever I need to use our solar system to keep all the power on. Keep going! You are wonderful. Don’t worry about Haole comments...I hear them all the time....and I’m probably more Hawaiian than the name callers. You seriously are an inspiration to many across the mainland and the Big Island. We love 💕 you and appreciate you.

Just happy to hear from you guys and that you're ok. I understand everything you're saying.
I think you shouldn't worry too much. People make their own decisions and are responsible for their own actions.
I also find that the way you present yourself in your video's not necessary contradicts how you really are. It just shows an other aspect of you. A nice fresh and often funny aspect at that.
I hope you will continue making videos, but you shouldn't feel under any pressure to do so.
I wish you all the best and hope to see you soon!

I am so glad I came across your videos I have been interested in moving to the big island for years. This video addresses so many concerns I had about how welcoming the locals are to state side people coming to homestead on the island. Also i have heard how it can suddenly start raining on a clear day, so to witness that in the video was cool. I've watched homestead and tiny home videos but this is the first channel I've come across of someone who is actually living that life style on the Big Island. I hope you feel compelled to continue to make videos, it lets this East coast girl know that all my lofty ideas can truly become reality one day. 🤙Aloha!

Thanks so much for giving us this video! My only thoughts during your hiatus, was wondering and hoping that you both were doing well. My first exposure to Hawaii, was when I lived In Kihei Maui, in 1963, as a first grader. There were no condos or hotels, and only the Maui Lu Resort offered a place for vacationers. It wouldn’t even qualify as a resort today. Christmas Day 1963 we went to Makena beach, and had the whole beach to ourselves, except one local family at the other end of the beach. Look at a picture of Makena today, if you don’t realize how special that was. So I had the gift of seeing “old Hawaii”. We were there for a year, then back to Colorado. We did the same thing in 1967. My dad was an atmospheric physicist, and he and his cohorts were measuring how radio waves and lasers are bent by the atmosphere and gravity. The space between Haleakala and Mauna Kea offered the least obstructive place on the planet for their experiments. Second place was Egypt. My dad, brother and I went for a two month trip in ‘70. Our rented beach house was gone, and a condominium complex had replaced it. The overdevelopment of Maui was well underway. My parents moved permanently to Kona in the late ‘70’s, and my 93 old mom still lives in Keahou. My earliest memories of Hawaii are so precious to me. I’ve seen the changes, and I totally get why locals would be upset by development and haoles moving in. Being a native Coloradan, I’ve watched the changes there too. Development has not improved Colorado, and I long for the “old Colorado”, much the same as I do for “old Hawaii”. What Native Hawaiians and multi generational locals are experiencing today, is happening all over the world. We have a dominant species problem, more so than a native/newcomer problem. There’s just too many people on this planet! My dream for a long time, has been to move to the BI, and live out my days there. I love what you two do, and how you have chosen to live, but you are not the cause of my dream. Hawaii and aloha are what inspires me. In my opinion, you two do a great job of personifying aloha, and Hawaii is lucky to have you.

To make it clear our entire family has been working towards moving to Hawaii for 10 years now and we have been many many times and we love almost all the islands. And we're still years away from actually moving there. But we're getting closer and we're excited about calling it our home rather than just the place we go half a dozen times a year. Half my family live in Alaska and Hawaii is the halfway point between our two halves of family. Family specifically being mean and my husband and our three children and our five grandchildren.

    • @evegoodman5431
      @evegoodman5431 Рік тому +1

I want to answer your question about what I think about people migrating. I know for a fact that the local Hawaiians would not like all the tourism to stop in Hawaii specifically. I've heard them say that they appreciate what they get from tourism. Some people just aren't happy and they don't really give a lot of thought to how it would be if things changed. Tourism stopped people stop moving there. They don't really give thought to the devastating way Hawaii could change. The world is a wonderful place people are wonderful beings there are very few that make life hard and sad. And nothing can make those people happy really because it comes from where their heart is not whether or not there are Outsiders living on their home island. The natives and locals living in Hawaii came there from somewhere else. Who's to say our family will not live there for the next 100 200 500 years and one day be considered natives/locals.

Hey guys! I met Paulina at work. I used to be an ATV guide. Great video to bring awareness to a real issue. The only reason I ever even visited the big island is because my wife is a local. I can't say that your videos ever convinced us to move there but they were very realistic and informative. That being said it is a tough place to find your place on the big island. I'm struggling with it myself. After two years I'm not sure I want to live there anymore. My wife and kids are doing great. They're generally accepted. But they don't look like me. My wife is Hawaiian and my kids are step children half Hawaiian half black. I love the island and the people but I don't always like living there. It's harder to make a living and to make friends. I just tell my friends and family that it's definitely a place to visit but it's not a place for everyone to live.

I happened upon your videos after the decision. We don’t want to live the rest of our lives in Pittsburgh. We love being around nature and gardening that is why I started watching you two. Hope to see more videos, but most of all hope you are happy. I think humans naturally think to explore things and migrate to new places, there are just way too many of us...Thank you for sharing your lives/thoughts with us and see you around Hilo some time. Aloha

My wife is Chilean & Paraguayan and I am Black Irish & Native American. We lived on Big Island in Kailua Kona for 4 years and never had a single issue. We learned Hawaiian history and came with good intentions and respect and we were accepted as family. We are moving back soon. I actually started my UA-cam career in Hawaii. Biggest thing I can recommend is being honest, original, humble and especially make sure you are having fun with it! We might bump into you guys sometime. Keep your heads up.

Regarding living where you want, I never felt very connected with Pennsylvania where I was born and raised. Moving to California in my 20's was great for the perspective and experience, but I've felt happiest in life since moving here. I have always just tried to be respectful, kind, and helpful to everyone around me and have had a great life here so far. I've started a family, and feel like my roots have grown into the community of the island. As long as you treat people with aloha, and not act entitled to everything around you, life can be good wherever you decide to live.

Your videos are so inspiring, and I love watching how much you’ve accomplished. I’ve visited twice once to WWOOF and once for vacation. I’ve always wanted to buy land and do what you’re doing. This video has helped a lot and I just thought I’d comment and let you know how much your videos mean!!! I have been in the same place most of my life and I feel almost trapped here but I’ve realized after visiting the island the first time how much better like could be and that there’s so much opportunity as long as when you go to a new place you respect the people, the culture, the land..!

I just stumbled upon your videos while watching other videos of Hawaii. I just subscribed. Im sad to hear you both are wanting to step away from making UA-cam videos, but you gotta do what you two are most comfortable with, not for the pleasure of your subscribers. I plan to watch ALL of your videos, and if you decide to ever make more content, I’ll be looking forward to that as well. I was born and raised on Big Island. Ocean view & Kona was my main. I now live in Washington state, and have been here for over a decade now. I do visit back home, but when im not on the island, videos like yours give me so much comfort 🥰 thank you. Good luck on your journeys to come. Stay blessed.

Someone wise once say "Home is where your Heart is". it is so true. I found that when I come into a new environment let it be a community, neighborhood, organization or company and after awhile if I felt that "giving and helping generously" to that environment/ or people of that community actually makes me happy and worth while, then that is probably home to me.

I totally understand as a creator where you’re coming from. I’m also an introvert. I have come to claim a bit of responsibility to fans and hold true to my goal of informing the public how to grow food. As far as the local issue, from a far it looks as though you guys keep to yourselves and are nurturing the land. I don’t see how it could be offensive to locals. Also, you’re not creators that are exploiting locals and the island in general for your benefit like some travel vloggers I’ve seen. Miss you. Hope you can find some time to get back on the horse and get inspired. Really enjoy your videos. You two have great personalities and are doing great things.

I appreciate your guys videos for the food forest tips and advice as well as other plant knowledge.
I think people moving around is good for the most part, people will gravitate towards what they love or what makes them comfortable.
When the wrong people come to the Island they tend to leave a year or two later because it's not what they thought...

Nobody whether it is a community or neighborhood or culture wanted to be "rundown, disturb, overwhelmed by mass of people from the "outside" at a large scale. It can be a nuisance and distraction of the ambient whether these "outsiders or visitors" are peaceful or not is not the point.

Hey there. Another recent subscriber and binge-watcher here. I think your channel and this video in particular really show that you two are thoughtful, careful, intentional and empathetic people who strive to live according to your values, despite the discomforts.
A bit about me since I know so much about you! I'm a US citizen and mixed race Japanese and Western European. My sister moved to BI from our hometown in California in the early 2000s. I've been considering doing an off-grid homestead for a while now, and my sister suggested Hawaii. Did some searching & found your channel and some other channels and Instagram accounts. One of the concerns that was on my mind was this issue of the Hawaiian islands having been colonized by our US ancestors. My sister's response to that was, as long as you come with aloha in your heart and look out for your community, then you are welcome. I watched a video by another UA-camr, Homesteadin' Hawaii, called something like "10 reasons not to move to the Big Island" and his number 10 was this issue. His follow up explanation behind that was similar to my sister's: know that some people will never want you there, come with aloha in your heart and don't just show up and take.
All that being said, I think the criticism resonated with you because you do know in your heart that a huge injustice happened to the people and the land, and you don't want to be part of the problem. And I think that those critics have handed you a precious gift wrapped in bitter packaging: a chance to slow down, reflect, learn .. compost that discomfort and allow it to help you grow.
Perhaps you can humble yourselves to some elders in your community and ask for their advice. Maybe now that you are more established on your homestead you might have the ability to spend more time learning more deeply about the history and traditions of the native people of Hawaii. In addition to the history, what about the present? What issues are facing the people in Puna today? How would native people there want you to offer yourselves as a resource? To "have aloha in your heart" is a beautiful starting point, but maybe the next step after that is to identify some community-minded action items to live out that value. I think if you wanted to share that journey on your channel, I for one would find it totally fascinating.
Another possibility to consider is that satellite internet technology might be making a huge advancement in the next few years, and this may cause a lot of folks from all over the world to be able to work remotely from rural areas. The coronavirus might have already amplified the effect, because a lot of companies have had to adjust to allowing employees to work from home. Hawaii already exists in worldwide consciousness as a paradise. You've worked hard on this channel and established this platform. Moving forward, it could serve as a primer for people to move to Hawaii responsibly (or stay away!).
A lot to chew on! I'm tired just from typing this all out! Thanks for addressing the issue and encouraging people to leave comments! Best of luck to you both! 💓

Have been missing your videos and fully understand your reasoning. I lived on Big Island for 4 years and it was a wonderful experience. I am quite outgoing and we were living off grid as well. Although we did not do the UA-cam videos I was exposed to doing many interviews for different sites. I always spoke very highly of living in Hawaii . I had developed a very good relationship with the locals and never felt or heard them comment about me recommending the island as a wonderful place to move to but am sure there were some. Funny though that I did have several of my haole neighbors comment to me telling me to quit recommending the island, they did not want more people coming over. Good luck with your adventures, by the way, I would be one of those people who would have said hello if I saw you in town, lol.

My wife and I were already planning to move out there and are using your channel as research - you've basically shown us what we already knew, but needed to see someone else doing. I wouldn't worry about your channel encouraging a bunch of people moving over so much as to show how to live there. And knowledge is what the world needs. You are providing a channel to viewers that helps them make informed decisions. I also would like to point out that there is a TON of unsold parcels on the big island and you have no control over who moves there.
