  • I’m always amazed at how people can turn shipping containers, hard, cold metal boxes, into some of the most beautiful, warm and welcoming homes. That’s exactly what this young couple from Victoria have done, transforming 3 20ft shipping containers into a wonderful, functional house.

    Everywhere you look, Richard and Amy have packed their container home with great small space design ideas, ensuring that within the small footprint of the shipping containers, there is a tremendous amount of home and living space. Just as much thought has been put into the build of the home, with some great choices in materials and construction techniques making this a high performing and well insulating container home.

    This home utilises a grid tied solar system, taking advantage of the extreme Australian sun. It also collects all it’s own water. With another family member on the way, this is sure to be a wonderful home for this young family. I hope you enjoy this video tour!

    I absolutely love the idea of getting together with family, combining funds, buying some land, and building individual container homes like our own little village or something. Especially now with everything that has happened this year with Covid etc, being in our own little family village would have made quarantining all the more tolerable. *drafts proposal to present at next family gathering*

    This is one of the most comfortable-looking "tiny" homes I've ever seen! I love the idea of the modular idea with the containters, just adding more containers to expand for different things. You can even go more floors above which could be awesome!

    I live on a 37 foot 80s boat. It’s absolutely BEAUTIFUL and the small space is really all you need. My husband is a marine mechanic so it runs great and we take it out a lot but if that’s not your forte, a house boat would be just as cool. It wasn’t too expensive, slip rent is minimal and we have an absolutely STUNNING view from every window (hatch and porthole!) of the Chesapeake Bay. Tiny living is truly the way to go in order to live LARGE for less.

      The design of this home has so many possibilities for an expanding family. Simply taking on a 40ft as the third container would have provided them with an additional room with possibly a jack and jill style bathroom in between the two. Did they go with a specific architect/engineer/contractor or self done for the design process? I would love to see the schematics for this design. I absolutely geek out to floor plans, electrical and plumbing to fully appreciate its efficiency.

    With containers this big, I can totally see myself living in a similar home with a friend!
    The middle container could be the common place with the kitchen and the bathroom and we could choose a container each as our bedroom / lounge area. With the laundry tucked away in the bathroom, maybe we could keep both the storage spaces in the hallways as our wardrobes! Definitely would make us happy to live together but would also provide with our own personal space! totally in love with this home :)

    This is one of the best shipping container homes I've seen. And with respect to all tiny home living -- I find it notable that so many of the BEST jobs start with "...we're on our family's land." If you're lucky enough to already have or be given space on the real estate, all the funding and effort is put into the home itself and it makes so much difference.

    • @richardbianco3193
      @richardbianco3193 4 роки тому

      It definitely helps with a big problem w these, curb appeal. It takes creative mind to give them curb appeal & that worked really well- have made mental note. Idea for others, haven't tried this yet but pretty sure I can rig up bracket with moulding to essentially use solar panels as the roof - I'd have made the entire top solar panels, they have some stiffness to them and a light bracing system with rubber moulding that goes up inbetween two panels & rests on top of the entire seem, like pushing a point between a narrow gap, once it breaks through the point expands locking it down holding one span of panels together. Not safe enough (probably) for real roof but I'd do something like this guy but those three roof would be panels all hooked and almost looking like one frame of panels bolted together. You could add slanted roof, or do what he did and experiment with placement for effect.

    • @SuperLisandro86
      @SuperLisandro86 4 роки тому

      Also shipping containers gets really hot, even with proper isolation if the sun hits directly. So the floating roof is good for keeping it warmer, and also reduce the sound that strong rain or hailing can make. The negative point is that is going to shake a lot with strong winds.

    My wife and I built a 24 x 24 home with 12 x 24 covered porch by the beach in the pacific northwest it has plywood walls as well we love the feel and color. Our floors are acid stained concrete. It is super insulated and our power bill is only $30 a month. We chose cedar shake siding as it blends well with our maritime coastal environment. We paid cash and built it ourselves so no mortgage payments.

      @Blasian Babies maybe you misunderstood, I have no desire to live in a shipping container. I meant that when I hear 'shipping container' I immediately think 'someone building a house with it' . Not 'i want to live in one'
      Obviously if you have enough shipping containers one can make ones abode as big as one wants. Having said that, for a shipping container house this one looks quite nice.
      There is the same craze about 'tiny houses'. Sure you can get/build one cheap and that might be ones choice, but I'd rather have a big house

      This has inspired you? Can you imagine living in a metal box in a winter like we're having now? This isn't simply impractical, it's backwards and rather stupid. There are modern building materials, heating and plumping systems that make a shipping container conversion absurd. In the cold, you would be in a meat locker, in the summer it would be an oven. Condensation would ruin any measures you would install to change this. If you wanted a tiny house, why would it have to be made of quarter gauge steal? Those advocating the "tiny house" alternative has never lived in one.

      Our first home was a small one bedroom house with an external shed for storage and enclosed yard/garden area. Perfect for the two of us. Then approaching our fifth year of marriage baby number one came along. Still was fine. Then 21 months later...baby #2. Time to move. As long as the couple in the tiny home expand before baby #1 needs his/her own room they can make this work. Hopefully they aren't surprised with triplets :p

      I don't think people are hating on the projects. It's more the problem that to "save" money to go into a tiny home, you already have to be fairly well to do to get into the project or privileged enough for family to gift land or the money to build the house at all. Which is totally the opposite of what the benefits of tiny home living is posed to be. (cheaper living and cost so one can save a lot of money for later. Some of these "tiny homes" cost as much as a starter home and are almost the size of apartments or smaller full sized houses).

      @@jershumuyo2734 I think you are right. Getting things free (like land or building materials) is a privilege that not many people have. However, there are comments literally saying that " people shouldn't be living like this" which indicates that they are irritated simply by the fact that some people are different and like to live different ways. If different living style works for them and it doesn't hurt anybody, then who the fuck cares? When it comes to homes in general, I like the idea of using recycled materials and other sustainable solutions. And even though living in a tiny house isn't for me, living in oversize house is not good either.
      I've occasionally watched tv-show "Love it or list it". The episodes usually have married couples, one of them wants to stay in their old home (and make it more functional) and the other spouse just wants to move to a bigger, new house. Many people in those shows just want more and more space, nothing seem to be enough. Everybody (including the kids) has to have their own bathrooms, several others rooms for all kinds of purposes etc. I always root for the spouse that wants to stay at the old house because at least that's more environmentally better choice.

      @@electricboogaloo5645 I almost always tend to just ignore outright those that are being critical just for the sake of it because it's not "what they would do". My own personal ethos has always been let people be themselves and as long as they aren't hurting anyone/thing in the process more power to them, live your best life.
      The tiny home movement appeals to me because it gives you the chance to be more eco friendly than a traditional home does and it really forces you to evaluate what items/things are important to you so people aren't just filling things up with "fluff" (something most of us are undoubtedly guilty of).The areas I tend to be more critical of myself is sustainability for long term in the home. I know space is a premium but for those who want this to be a forever home, did they think if that ladder/narrow stair will work for them as they age etc. I do think it's important to always be critical, but with purpose. Something some social media armchair quarterbacks definitely lack.

    This was one of my favorites (watching for a second time today). I really want you to go back and see how it is now with a baby. I think people under estimate just how much a child takes over your life from how you were use to it, but I also think people over estimate what you actually need when raising a child (it's really not as much as you think). So it would be really interesting to see how so of these homeowners are doing now that they have children in their small spaces.

      I agree - I personally found the design quite pleasing (not everyone’s taste I realise) and thought the layout was generally a practical, user friendly one. The only part I wasn’t keen on was the bedroom- the bed is impractical and I wouldn’t like not being able to close the area off, more of an issue once their child arrives.

      @@D-me-dream-smp I wished they would show a birds eye view of the place. I'm betting they added another 20-ft container at the end for a second bathroom & childrens bedroom/play area. I think that would work until they have a second child or the one gets older as adults will want their bedroom NOT wave to be walked through to get to the living room by other members of the household. Perhaps if the next container they add becomes their bedroom with a second bath & their current room becomes the kids area that would work for a longer time.
