The Cycling Gardeners are a team of professional gardeners based in Edinburgh who offer their services across the city, but with a unique twist: they travel to their clients exclusively by cargo bikes. This environmentally friendly approach not only reduces their carbon footprint but also promotes sustainable urban living.
The idea for the Cycling Gardeners came from dealing with the challenges of moving around Edinburgh in vans. As a bustling capital city, the traffic in Edinburgh meant that staff were often sitting in traffic in their vans for longer than they actually spent working. So, they decided to swap vans for bikes!
Since the swap, the Cycling Gardeners have been able to work much more efficiently, without wasting time navigating traffic or finding parking spaces.
The Cycling Gardeners team only use battery-powered tools now too. In the heavily populated city of Edinburgh, using battery tools means they can get the job done, but without disturbing anyone around them, thanks to the quieter operation. The tools are also lighter, with less vibrations and no emissions during use.
By switching to cargo bikes and STIHL cordless tools, and installing solar panels in their yard, the Cycling Gardeners have also managed to keep their energy costs extremely low. Last year, their electricity costs were just £200!
