Do you know how big those threaded wood inserts are for the joystick mount? Just ordered a cab from GRS and need to buy threaded wood inserts for the joystick
Good video and almost identical issues that I had with the same build about 9 months ago. (Pieces not fitting together great, bent tmolding, speaker mounting, etc) My artwork lined up with what I designed and I used a 32" TV that seemed to fit fairly well. I did ask them about the 4 screw holes in the control panel versus 2 in the base and they told me that 4 holes are for the pedestal base but the 4 player cabinet only needs the 2 holes. I haven't had any issues with only using 2 screws so far. GRS did send me the wrong configuration of the control panel and plex but I did receive a replacement from them within the week. I've honestly had more issues with their recommended software solution versus anything that GRS sent me but I agree that they could use some better quality control or design tweaks.
I got the 43" version and in the process of assembly. Some of the stuff I agree with, some I don't. Mainly, the speakers are definitely an issue. My solution was to cut the holes for 6x9 speakers, which actually looks more proportional, given the board width. As for the mending plate alignment, yea it's an oversight, but not a real issue in my book. I rather drill my own holes for that anyway to assure the screws are anchored properly. For the rest, there are so many proprietary parts that it's difficult to make something that will fit everything. It's a DIY cabinet, so client mods are almost a given, so if you are buying, assume some mods will need to be done..
I purchased the two player version a year ago. Didn't have any issues with the build. Only issue I had was two of my panels were damaged due to shipping but they quickly replaced them. If I had to say anything negative their customer service is lacking. I want to upgrade to the 4 player now that my 5 and 6 year old has taken an interest in gaming with dad. For the price I think they are pretty solid for what I've seen other places try and charge.
Man I got mostly lucky with mine. They forgot to drill a hole for the 4-way stick, two camshaft holes. My panels were mostly damage free. I had damaged t molding and scratches where it didn't matter (like the back panels). There were considerable gaps in the control panel. I managed to repair 90% of the cabinet. I used epoxy putty and wood filler, drilled missing holes, replace t molding, realigned panels, etc. I also did a lot of reinforcing with L brackets and placed washers in various areas. Visually, my arcade looks quite good after everything is said and done, now it just has minor cosmetic imperfections but you don't really notice them unless if you look closely. It was a nightmare putting mine together, but it came out fine in the end.
I’m glad you had a more positive experience. My point was that after paying that much for something, you shouldn’t have to do any of the extra work you describe. GRS needs better quality control and customer service.
What other options are there for cabinets like this besides Game Room Solutions and Rec Room Masters? I want to do a 43" and only GRS offers that size out of these 2.
I ordered the same unit as you did and ran into some of the exact same problems. Missing holes in the pedestal mount, misaligned holes for the mending plate. They also sent me one of the wrong back pieces, which they did fix after I bugged then for six weeks (part of the problem was it was the holidays). BUT the game room solutions people were fairly quick in responding to my questions. (Sometimes it was "just drill it out", which I didn't love.).
Glad you had a better experience. I think enough people have complained about their lack of customer service, they're slowly seeing that they are, in fact, the problem. Not their users. But, I won't be using them again, that's just a personal preference.
Did you find a lcq screen for the Marquee? I was thinking of this kit, but seeing what you went through, not too sure now, but still curious about the screen though.
I did. I got it from a dude off arcadecontrolsforum for $200. The height is about right for this set up, but the width is a little narrow. It’ll require some sort of holder to get it in there, but to save $500 off the one from China, I’ll take it. I’ll put up a video about it sooner or later. His FS thread on the forum is usually near the top.
Might be super late but I noticed you were debating on switching the orientation of the joysticks. On old school arcade cabinets thats how they were designed (main reason being because of the smaller screen). You can look on the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade cabinet, the 1st and the 4th player are set up at a 45゚ angle. Also check out old Simpson's and original Gauntlet cabinets, all of them have that orientation. Honestly when you said that the orientation was different on a newer cabinet I got curious and I looked it up... thought it looked a little weird.
Interesting. I guess I’ve never notice on those games. It just doesn’t seem as intuitive that way. To me anyway. Thanks for watching and for the info!!
I haven't got 3 and 4 to work yet. But, just from messing around, it's a little awkward. They should be oriented more in line with the screen. I may try to fix it, if I get really bored.
This is an awesome video. Thank you do much. I was going to buy one of these because I love the aesthetic but you have talked me out of it. This seems like a nightmare to put together,
I ordered that exact some monitor and was also a bit concerned about that odd inset for the vesa mounting. I have an arcade cab coming and was curious how you managed to make it work? Did you have to use spacers then?
Honestly, after I posted this, I got distracted building a virtual pinball machine and haven’t even finished hooking it up yet. Haha. I’m still not sure how I’m going to fix that issue.
Great video, thanks! I was considering getting one of these... Can I ask you how tall is it? Can you confortably play standing up? From the vid and the pics on their website it doesn't look that high
Probably around 6’ tall. Honestly, I haven’t got it running yet. But it looks like it’s an okay height. I’m pretty tall, 6’4”, so everything’s kinda short for me. :)
I dunno why this review is so negative. I have one of these 4 player cabs from GRS and I love it. I had a couple little snags putting it together, but nothing a knife and screwdriver didn't fix. Well worth the investment. Buy one and enjoy.
@@MRNBricks yeah. I wish I had seen this sooner. Currently assembling mine and for 1000 dollars, when I call and say that several (about 1/4 of them) of the cam holes aren't drilled through the sides, they just say you can drill those yourself in a few seconds. I know I can, but I paid a grand for someone else too. My control panel was a lot worse too. I got the "modern" cut layout and the miters are so bad, they overlap and cover the button holes on the sides. A shit load of other probs. Most are minor on their own, but for the price..
When little things are out of alignment it turns an hour of installation into days of installation, going back and forth with people via email that have no customer relations skills. It is very frustrating. Their product installation guides offer no detail; it is like a brake changing guide that says, "Remove wheels, remove caliper, insert brake pad, installation is reverse of removal, done". No detail at all. Mending plates don't line up. There are two screws per side and only one per side actually fit. I put the clips on the back doors, secured all the cams, and the back doors won't clear to shut. Little thing after little thing. It adds up. But all in all their prices and free shipping can't be beat. Making some minor corrections isn't so bad when you shop around and see what Recroommasters charges. But GRS is frustrating because they have the potential to be great and hold themselves back with poor quality control and customer service.
Really good video, you have a lot of patience. You should build your own out of ply, making it yourself is easy, easier than figuring out someone else's mistakes
I’ve been thinking about getting their 32” 2-player kit, but have seen a lot of videos like yours showing the quality issues. On their website they only have 5-star reviews b/c they probably delete the ones that are lower, and when they send kits to big UA-cam channels they probably hand pick the parts to send so that there is no mistakes. I’m personally contacting Haruman Customs to build me something from scratch. Thanks for the video
I have ordered three things from them. Horrible QC fit and finish terrible and their customer service is the worst. They didn’t send parts and I asked three times for them before they shipped and they were wrong. They folded the Tmolding...yup destroyed 20 feet of it.
I got the two player version of the cabinet. I didn't have as many problems as you did. There were a couple though. The biggest problem I had was that the bezel didn't fit in the grooves. I ended up fixing it by cutting away the graphics from the sides of the bezel. The lack of instructions really added to the frustration, though. I think if they had included instructions it would have helped with some of the problems you had. Tell people they need speakers that are flat in front (they do make those) and to avoid those monitors that have the vesa mounts off center. I was pretty happy with the end result, so I guess it was worth the trouble, in my case. It's better than the arcade1up mods I've done, anyway. Very solid and sturdy, and I like the way its designed, with the control panel that flips up. I actually got a pinball cabinet from them too. That one did have instructions. I can see why you gave a negative review though. They could definitely make some things easier.
I've got the same issue here with my bezel. What did you use to cut the acrylic down to size? The only cutting tools I have are knives, so I guess I need to either try that or go out and buy a saw of some type.

Holes completely off, so much shit not even drilled out. I had to drill several holes myself which took the installation way longer than I planned. Then they send EVERY SCREW in the world, except for what fits my monitor. Seriously, they sent me like 5 sets of screws and NONE fit my monitor to mount it, just like what happened to you. Then on top of that, the damage. Oh, the damage. I literally cried seeing what they sent me. Split and busted wood on all ends of the pieces. Several scratched and damaged boards. I just don't understand why they are so shitty. The thing is, they know they aren't doing things right, and they are overcharging customers. For what they send, the price should be no more than $500-$800 MAX. As a matter of fact, Microcenter has this EXACT same cabinet they recently started selling (same 4-player cabinet) for like $849. I think they are getting the same supplier or stock as GRS gets from some shitty Chinese factory, and they are selling it at its rightful price. I have seen them at Microcenter with my own eyes, all but too late. Go to their website and check "DIY arcades" and you will see. Finally, just like you, after everything, it does put together pretty sturdy, but I would caution EVERYONE to avoid this shitty company.
