It's been a L-O-N-G time coming (probably longer than you know) but I'm so happy to finally present part 1 of my arcade cabinet build! In case you haven't seen it, be sure to watch my older video all about setting up the Raspberry Pi (using RetroPie) and the controls. If you've got that system all up and running, putting it in something is the next step! I've been working on the plans for this system for a long time, rethinking them over and over to include all of the stuff I wanted my cabinet to have. This was especially important to me, since my wife gave me the OK for this to go in our living room. In my mind, that means that it HAD to be as practical as possible (even though it's completely impractical by nature.)
The biggest difference in my cabinet and the vintage cabinets, is the fact that the modern electronics can literally fit in your pocket, so the majority of the cabinet is empty. I wanted to take advantage of that with my design...
I decided to keep all of the electronics in/around the controls and monitor. This left the area below the controls, and behind the monitor open, so I made them into storage. Underneath the controls is a simple bookshelf with two doors. Behind the monitor was harder to get to, so I designed the cabinet so that one side panel could actually swing open, revealing six drawers, each 24" deep. Being able to swing open the side panel COMPLETELY changed the structure, in comparison to most cabinets, but I totally think it was worthwhile.

Bob this is really inspiring, particularly how you designed it so multifunctional, making great use of the space. Big thanks from Swedish musician/instrument builder
What?! The creator of marble machine and no replies since 4 years
Ooouhhhh u gonna take that point Dexter
A video illustration of why I want more tools that I can't afford.
That why I ordered the wood precut and drilled from Spain... Was cheaper than local
I get what you're saying but in all honesty, you can build a cabinet basically just like this with a simple saw and probably a sander. It doesn't have to be quite as "complicated "as this may seem.
You're just cutting and nailing a few wooden boards together. Sure, some of the tools he used may make things slightly easier, but very nothing that couldn't be done with very simple /basic tools just about anyone would have in the garage.
Don't let some of the "fancy" tools intimidate you. Woodworking is a very simple and ancient thing that's been done for thousands of years, LITERALLY... lol
@@jordanjohnson7264 this
@@jordanjohnson7264 exactly ...iv watched several videos like this and i get a little irritated, it just seems to me that its just to showcase the elaborate tools and how2. pen glue nails wood/material a jigsaw and sandpaper and you can get your mancave looking like your own retro cade..iv made plenty
Then just enjoy the video and keep wishing…
This is awesome. After seeing your shop tour, I really appreciate how you make use of the space you have, and use tools that most people have or can purchase - i.e. all the cuts with your circular saw. Really challenges me to stop complaining that I don't have the right tools.
Dang that was sweet! I think I want to build an arcade now. Art Deco style though. Looking forward to more
Looks amazing so far! Looking forward to part 2 ;-)
+GreatScott! Thanks!
+I Like To Make Stuff you are amazing GreatScott!,I Like To Make Stuff
+GreatScott! Fancy seeing you here. Love your projects man!
GreatScott! GREAT SCOTT! It's GreatScott!
GreatScott! woah I did not expect to see u here
Duuuude, this is awesome. Can't wait to see how the rest came together. Also love how you locked in the board for the monitor.
It's coming out awesome! I think this one is gonna be a masterpiece! Can't wait to watch more! Amazing work!
This is turning out fantastic Bob!! I love the opening side idea!
Well done! loads of storage!!
+jimmydiresta Thanks dude!
+I Like To Make Stuff This looks great so far!!! Nice work!!
My thoughts exactly. Love the amount of storage you built into the cabinet. Looks great!
As soon as I noticed the storage space in the back, I could imagine a mini fridge full of beers :D
Dude you killed it. I rarely post but felt compelled to tell how impressed I am. This is awesome. Love the design, love the speed (I know, editing and stuff) and I love how you're putting this together in such a small place with sheet goods. Makes me feel like complaining a lot less and doing a lot more.
Great stuff Bob. Genuinely can't wait to see the rest.
+Joe Soap Thanks so much! I really appreciate that!
Locking mechanism - genius !
+kodaspaws thanks!
Love it. Based on your previous RPi video, I told my son last weekend that he (12) and I need to build a cabinet for an arcade machine soon! Looking forward to the next video.
Awesome stuff! I have been waiting for this... Want to do one for my own, and this is great inspiration. Thanks Bob :)

Natural Nerd such a normal name for an extraordinary guy
I like this style of video, you're not teaching us how to use something as much as a narrative to explain what you're doing. I find it very engaging.
This is coming along awesomely, Bob! And you looked so thrilled/happy at the end of the video next to the completed machine! That's awesome!
I watched this video years ago but recently become enthralled with arcade stuff and wanting to build my own arcade cabinet. Looking through a bunch of videos recently on how to build cabinets and stuff like that..... with all those extra shelves you put in you should be ashamed of yourself 😅🤣... but I understand the utility of it. I'm also in the process of coming up with an "ultimate design" for a 4 player setup And not gonna lie it is super f****** difficult 😅. I will say this though, this video put it in my mind 5 years ago that I could build my own arcade cabinet! And people reading this comment (watching this vid) you can do it too!... Take your time and come up with your own design, research the ins and outs and you will have something bad-ass.
And to @I Like To Make Stuff ... thank you brotha, for showing me years ago that I could do this... I am right around the corner! Thanks again man.
Very cool, totally worth the wait ! You can tell There is so much Thought that went into this. I really like the bezel, the shelving idea, the whole thing so far !
+Tappar Thank you!!
I know I probably won't ever make this and yet this is so entertaining, good job! 😄
The soldering the Raspberrypi are easy, but I suck with wood working. So I understand you
I might. But my procrastination might put me in your same position 🤣🤣
A while back ago i was thinking of making a arcade cabinet and was bummed because there was next to no good tutorials on UA-cam. Glade to see this video pop up in my subscription box!
I made my own table top arcade box months ago with the lackluster woodworking skills and tools I have and I'm super jealous of this product! Can't wait to see the finished cabinet
I can't wait until Part 2!
Dude, you are awesome! I wish I had the patience and fortitude to do what you're doing. I'll live vicariously through your efforts. Great work!
I love this project, I lost count of how many times I've watched it, I'm running this project now, with a few different little details, adapting to my environment and use.
Bob,You are a big inspiration for me,When I grow,I want to animate,Be a mascot,And now...Make arcade games.
Thank you for these videos,I hope it inspires people as much as it does me.
Awesome Project, looking forward to the finish product

Bruh.
Your videos are like an instructive audio book. Calm, clear, nice voice and directions.
And I still love your timelapses and jumpcuts, the work that goes into editing your videos definitely pays of. :)
Thanks for putting all that efford into your projects and your videos! I think by now you can look at what you've created so far and be proud of yourself.
Someone needs to say that from time to time, just so you know it
+NochSoEinKaddiFan I truly appreciate that :) It's very encouraging to hear that on occasion, thank you!!
The locking mechanism for the screen is brilliant! This is awesome work.
I love this project! The hidden storage was a great idea and the CRT-style bezel for the monitor was a really nice touch!
Astoundingly high production quality on this one Bob. You really outdid yourself, and I look forward to part 2!
HUGE congrats Bob! I know you've got to be relieved to be at the end of this monumental project; AND happy with the results of all the blood, sweat, and tears.
+Seth Messer Thanks!! It's really gratifying to get to see it in it's finished state (and play it, of course :)
+I Like To Make Stuff definitely! and now your kiddos get to experience the "gaming" we grew up on.
I have no workshop, no access to an sort of tools, and I've never been too interested in carpentry. And yet your videos interest me so much. What you make is incredible. :)
+Jonathan Smith Thanks so much! Hopefully you'll be inspired to make something at some point, even if it's nothing like the stuff that I make! Thanks for watching!
+I Like To Make Stuff Ever since I started watching your videos I'd told myself that as soon as I can buy my own house, I'm re-watching your secret door bookcase video and building one of those. :)
FANTASTIC!!! Loved the locking cleat idea for the monitor panel.
I WANT MORE! :) looks great man! can't wait to see the rest!
It must feel good posting this one. This turned out awesome. You worked really hard on this one and it shows. Thumbs up Bob!
+RetroWeld Thanks Douglas! I can't wait for everyone to see it completed, I'm SO happy with how it turned out!!
Great video! I just re-watched your older arcade video yesterday and was hoping this would come soon. Excited for the next part!
Bob, this is so far one of my favorite videos on the channel. Can not wait for part 2!
You have no idea how much I want to build one of these for my living room. Can you say valentine's day gift?
Just awesome. I think you should expand on it so you can host Killer Queen games! : )
+April Wilkerson YES!
Sweet Bob!!!! It's nice to see this thing finally out :) looking forward to this series! 👊
Absolutely wonderful! After hearing about this project for awhile now, it is a real pleasure to see it come together. Excellent video! Awesome build! Can't wait to see part two!!!
+Artismia Thanks man!
This video was well worth the wait! Definitely one of my favorite ILTMS vids. Thanks, Bob!
+Fun Facts 5000 Thank you!!
+I Like To Make Stuff its the best thing I ever saw my sister thought it was really a game
Arcade? First I'm hearing of it ;) Nice build Bob!
+Dustin Penner Hahahaha... yeah yeah. ;)
I really love watching videos related to Arcade, specially making your own one. Thank you for this.
Awesome build ❤ I'm building a cabinet around my switch and r36s, still in the planning stages, got 2 gamesir c2 (to lazy to build from scratch) that I'll put in it.
I'm actually mostly psyked about the fact that my friend will give the cabinet a nice paint job, nothing like enjoying playing a pice with art from lovedones while you're wiping them in streetfighter❤
lets see what i have for this...
a marker
Its like Nerdy Nummies but with wood and stuff. XD
The cnc machine is dumb, just use an actual 27" crt. They are a dime a dozen at Goodwill just make sure it has power return so that if you lose power it returns to the correct input on its own when turned back on.
Most people (myself included) will avoid CRT due to weight.
Lemon Love omg yes!!!!!!
@@Gamerangs Where are you? Every goodwill within a several hundred mile radius hasn't had crts in years.
Looks great my hat's off to you brother. Totally worth the wait.
+Dan The Maker Man Thanks Dan!
@David Mander Nope "brother" is just an expression of admiration.
Started but never had the time to finish a similar project.. Gave me plenty of ideas and motivation to restart even if i'm faaaar away from having all those beautifull pieces of wood and tools you've got ! Thank you for sharing !
This is awesome! It re-ignited my desire to build an arcade cabinet. I've got a 30" LCD, a RPi....last year I build a tear drop trailer. This year...a cabinet!
I love this guys channel. It's like what grant Thompson's channel used to be, before he changed it all and now it's crap. You should do a collab with him.
+Connor Hart we're working on it. We just haven't come up with the idea yet.
I agree
Connor Hart, IKR!
I Like To Make Stuff do you think you can ad a coin accepter if you can please make a video I hope you can
Always check stickers for hidden screws when tearing down consumer electronics!
Finally! You have been talking about it for so long on the podcast, but I was beginning to think it was a myth! Like Bigfoot...The cut out for the monitor was brilliant!
This is by far the coolest project on this channel!
I would do this, but for 3 reasons.
1. I have no place to put it.
2. I Don't have the proper tools
3. I have no work shop.
You can take plans to a cnc/milling shop and they'll cut everything for you. They have plans for all kinds of classic cabinets.
@@pdxmetal very true...you dont need 3 thirds of the elaborate tools here in this video and many like this
+I Like To Make Stuff I think that is one of the if not longest ILTMS videos. I remember when you hit 100k subscribers!
Not sure but I think the FAQ and the sop tour are longer ;-)
+socar128 Well then the longest build video.
+socar128 in case u didn't notice, he had to cut it short coz the vid is too long....duh
pikachu1324 yep !
Ezran Zulnaidy yes I noticed it but you know technically speaking it is not the longest video !
Totally just started my own MAME project! Love that its lining up with your build!
I have been EAGERLY anticipating this! Awesome job Bob.
Why would one dislike this video? This is a masterpiece!
Arcade games have always been the best
I've still got the Commondore64!
Ever find a UA-cam channel where you are certain you would be BFF's with the creator?
That's this channel. Everything you do is the same kinda stuff i'm into, this is awesome!
Design is about expression. True artist. I grew up in many a Arcade well done.
Great video, NEW SUBSCRIBER
Thanks!
If it has the follow arcade versions:
-Michael Jackson’s Moon walker
-Alien vs predator
-TMNT 1989
-The Simpson’s
-CAPCOM Vs Snk 2
-Street fighter 3rd strike
-Marvel Vs Capcom
-Metal Slug 3
-Mortal Kombat 3
-Tekken 3
Then I’ll get it.
So stoked for this! Pocket holes into MDF...who knew. Looks amazing so far Bob!
This is just freaking awesome! I have always wanted to build the arcade version that you sit in...like for the driving games, mounted force feedback steering wheel, full audio. Maybe someday. Can't wait for part deuce!
73 views 1000 likes......... Yep I really liked this that much
+Living Wood Creations -wood turning videos- I must be at least half of those...
Looks like I'm gonna be buying some plans!!!
Awesome Bob! Nice to see this coming together at last!
very cool. looking forward to the later parts. Glad to see the build after hearing about it on the podcast.
Now I can see why you complained of your shop being small while working on this project.
I guess you could say
He nailed it...
badumm tss
Ok, ok lower the gun, im getting out ok just lower the gun!
+AARON TENA nice :)
I Like To Make Stuff Thanks, had to do it, all that nails used... xD
Excellent work! Can't wait for parts 2 and 3!
I had a dream recently where you had posted the arcade build.
In my dream, I sat at my computer and watched UA-cam and it was awesome! Livin' the dream!!! Woo!
Part 2 will be released ... later this afternoon????? 👍
+Ryan Neumann Haha :) Not quite. Next Thursday!!
+I Like To Make Stuff marking my calendar ... done.
BOB THE BUILDER!!!
Dang! I've always liked your stuff because they always look like polished and complete pieces that someone would pay top dollar for. But you outdid your self on this one. You're setting a really high standard for yourself. Can't wait for the next part.
+Lee Wise Very kind words, thank you Lee! I can't wait to show everyone the completed project!!
The slide locks for the monitor was a really good idea. Great video!
You should really wear a dust mask when cutting MDF.
+IMPUREPALADIN yeah, Doug Bernards "Amplified" recently said MDF can put out carcinogens that are known to cause cancer...
just read a couple articles that said it's because Formaldehyde is used to bind the materials that make up MDF
Yeah, told my boss that for years when I worked in a cabinet factory, they said we were NOT ALLOWED to wear any kind of mask or respirator! Breathed that stuff for eight years straight.
Bastian oof you might have a lawsuit due to you constantly informing him of the potential risks and him denying usage of safety precautions, additionally it’s a real good “I told ya so” moment, unfortunately it was at your healths expense
@@yerkyt8586 Yeah, I haven't had any serious effects as of yet, though I do get out of breath a lot quicker than I should compared to people of a similar fitness level to me.
@@LastBastian im a senior in college and have business law 5 today that ends aroung noon central time, professor has spent 25+ years as an attorney in this field. ill let you know what she says on if you have a case and if you should seek an attorney. from my 4 years experience i would say youre life could get a whole lot better here soon but i also have a b- so who knows lol
Step 1: Own a house with a large garage equipped with tools worth thousands of dollars.
Worth the wait. Excellent display of planning and execution.
Worth the wait! Looking really good so far...I will be watching for the rest of the series!
Did this dude use to work at NASA
No, but Mark Rober did.
He works with mark rober, who did
Well, off to make Polybius!
...
No, Seriously.
@@altrock86 rest in peace
This guy deserves 1,000,000 subs
I just feel happy watching them!!! such a relief!!
WOW .... There is SO MUCH unnessary work ! It can be done so much simpeler !
Cool, let’s see your version.
Bob, WEAR A RESPIRATOR! You inhaled a ton of nasty particulates in this video alone, especially cutting the MDF. Ain't nobody got time for lung cancer.
Also, this is an awesome build. ;)
+Andrew Brinkhaus I don't recall seeing him most of the time to know whether or not he wears one at all, but it's worth noting that these dangers are serious primarily for people who work with these materials and so inhale these particulates consistently on a daily basis over years. I wouldn't want to inhale it anyway, but people far too often exaggerate safety concerns based on occupational safety standards that assume far worse exposure than even people like Bob would handle.
Andrew Brinkhaus oh please. It's good for the heart.
Yeah, told my boss that for years when I worked in a cabinet factory, they said we *NOT ALLOWED* to wear any kind of mask or respirator! Breathed that stuff for eight years straight.
Killer project!
Bob, this is amazing!
I can't wait to see the rest of the project.
Thank you :)
Go to bed, man
No!
This project is insane!! Love it so much!! Especially your detail of work.!! I'm really impressed
Dude this is craaazy! I have an old used arcade I bought at a yard sale and thought about redoing the entire thing.
I'll definitely be buying your plans ;-)
Can't wait for part 2!
Thank you! I have working proof of concept on my table and looking into designs. Your video gave me so many tips (like side door access, monitor bezel to name a few). Thanks! Your finished cabinet looks amazing.
WOW! I've been excited for this for a while and it's even more impressive than I would have guessed!!
Awesome stuff Bob. Can't wait to see the finished product.
This looks freaking amazing! You clearly know what you are doing and have awesome tools.
I happen to be currently in the process of designing/building my own MAME cabinet, too! Glad I stumbled across this video. Great job here.
Very high cool-factor on this project Bob. I like it, way to go!!:)
I've always wanted to make an arcade cabinet! This is definitely going on my build list!
So happy to see this project getting done. It gives me hope that I will one day get to mine.
Looks fantastic... looking forward to the next part.
