  • My guest today is an actual Rockstar! Tanya O'Callaghan has played bass with the likes of Whitesnake, Dee Snider, members of Guns & Roses and is now playing with Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden - my second favourite band of all time. Crying in the Rain is one of my favourite songs of all time. I was listening to this song when I saw Tanya's message. She told me she was with White Snake about to go on stage! But she is not a full Rockstar. She is the one who does yoga before the show, drinks soda water instead of beer and goes to explore the cities she tours in by walking around the streets instead of partying. I asked her why and she answered "Music is my passport to making the world a better place."
Tanya O’Callaghan is an established freelance musician/bassist, speaker and activist with an eclectic impressive career to date. Tanya began crafting her skills at home making a mark for herself on the Irish music scene early in her career, playing with just about every band around and regularly guesting in house bands for many high-profile Irish TV shows and artists

She explains well why it is so important to be in a band and interact with other musicians. I've been doing it for 40 years now and still playing Iron Maiden and the songs I love so much. I'm now drumming in a heavy metal cover band that is by far the best group of people and musicians that I've ever played with. Playing, learning and teaching other musicians is mission one.

Super interview! Just loved learning more about what drives & inspires Tanya in the vegan movement, her passion & drive are inspiring!
I’m a plant-based/vegan health coach & my path has been to get people invested in their own self-health-care.
Tanya spoke into this brilliantly, there’s so much going on in our food system that’s unhealthy & unnatural, we need massive changes for the animals & for ourselves.

Thank you some comments for sharing your thoughts and expressing your concerns about the affordability of a plant-based diet, particularly for individuals with low or no income. I understand that you believe it can be significantly more expensive to eat a plant-based diet, even when cooking from scratch. You also mentioned the time cost associated with "growing your own" food, which may compete with low-wage employment. Additionally, you emphasized the importance of ensuring that the cost of plant-based food remains accessible to all without exploiting food producers.
While I appreciate your perspective, I would like to address some of the points you raised. It is indeed a common misconception that plant-based meals are inherently more expensive. In reality, the cost of a diet largely depends on the specific food choices and shopping habits of an individual. It is possible to find affordable plant-based options and make economical choices that fit within a limited budget.
Choosing plant-based foods means valuing the life of an animal, a sentient like us humans, in comparison to a sandwich.
It is about recognizing the environmental and ethical implications of animal agriculture. The animal industry contributes significantly to deforestation, greenhouse gas emissions, and water pollution, which have severe consequences for the planet and human health. By opting for plant-based alternatives, we can reduce our ecological footprint and promote sustainability.
Shopping at farmers markets can be a great way to support local producers and access fresh, affordable plant-based foods. It's commendable that you choose to consume mostly raw foods, as they offer numerous health benefits and often require minimal preparation. However, I understand that not everyone has the resources or time to follow this approach, and that's okay. Plant-based diets can be diverse, including cooked meals that are still nutritious and cost-effective.
To ensure that plant-based food remains accessible to all, it is crucial to address broader systemic issues. This involves advocating for fair wages and improved working conditions for food producers, as well as policies that support affordable and nutritious options for everyone. By promoting sustainability and food justice, we can work towards a future where plant-based diets are both affordable and inclusive.
Thank you for raising this important topic, and I hope this response provides some insight into the affordability of plant-based diets. It is essential to continue these discussions to find practical solutions that benefit both animals, humans and the planet.

Interesting interview. I must however challenge the affordability. On low or no income (welfare) especially shopping for 1 or 2 people, it is *significantly* more expensive to eat a plant-based diet, even if you cook from scratch. There is also a huge time cost if you dabble with 'growing your own' especially where that time competes with hours of employment in low-wage jobs. To be sustainable over time (as opposed to responding to an ideologically driven fad/guilt/attempt) the cost of plant based food must be accessible to all without exploiting food producers in the process.

Hi there 👋 I agree with the growing your own, of course this is something ideal I'm just speaking about but not realistic for most people, myself included currently. But affordability is not something that should be a hurdle to plant based. It is widely accessible and cheap to buy fruits, veggies, rice, grains, beans... etc.. in most parts of the world. Granted of course there are places that are food deserts and I am speaking to people who have access to grocery stores. There is nothing expense about cooking basic, healthy, whole foods comparatively to things like meat and dairy it's significantly cheaper to keep those items off your shopping list for a multitude of reasons. The internet can be a wonderful rabbit hole to search "cheap, health, plant based cooking" 🙂🙏

@@tsubbass HI Tanya, thanks for your reply. I am in fact in Ireland and whilst I am not a true disciple of the plant-based diet (more a dabbler) I have two very close friends (rural west of Ireland) who are both single, who were devotees and went all-in for a number of years but simply couldn't sustain it. Both were on Welfare (one on Disability Benefit the other a Lone Parent). They had tiny polytunnels to grow what they could, bartered with other growers to exchange gluts, and cooked from scratch. Despite this, the cost burden became too great to sustain especially when inclement weather limited their harvests; the fuel cost barrier to travel distances to larger towns with greater supply options, and the impact of the post-covid cost-of-living crisis. I've also seen other friends with higher incomes successfully sustain their diets as they can afford to source their food with greater ease, can forego reliance on growing their own and can opt for packaged convenience options when time is at a premium . It's tricky to find an equitable solution that makes it a sustainable choice for all.
