The last three times I've done the Hou-LA drive, I've wound up grooving to Steely Dan tunes almost the entire way. Just sooooo good and clean and easy to enjoy.
_The Black Cow is a creamy cocktail that's made with a coffee liqueur like Kahlua, chocolate ice cream, root beer, and whipped cream. Some versions use Coke instead of root beer_
@Intro to Classic Rock that too. So many definitions online, initially I think it just referred to a rootbeer float, made with coke? My preference: Kahlua & Vodka with a splash of cream
And pop. Fagen has talked about how listening to ad jingles and other popular music influenced him growing up. It's telling, I think, that despite the musical fusion, elaborate arrangements, at times arcane lyrics, and perfectionistic production values, that the music is just so listenable - ear candy.
Brad & Lex, you'll love their "Deacon Blues", "Aja" and "Josie"!!!!! Great songs from a legendary album. The album 'Aja' won the Grammy Award for Best Engineered Recording - Non-Classical and received Grammy nominations for Album of the Year and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals. In my top 5 of all-time great albums!!!
What is a Black Cow? It's basically a root beer float using Kahlua. The adult version however uses bourbon. Rudy's (Bar and Grill) still exists here in NYC on 9th ave between 44th and 45th. Then and now it is essentially a dive bar. In the 70's 42nd St was a hub for pro's and johns, and Rudy's was often where pro's, musicians, artists, and actors would mingle. On the bar when he sees her are her remedies (alcohol and drugs), and her book of numbers, so she was more a high priced pro. The pros also strolled from 26th and 11th ave to the Javits Center on 34th and 11th Ave down to 42nd, down to 7th Ave. There were many on the east side on Greene St from Houston to Spring St as well. He is a man who was hopelessly in love with a prostitute that cannot change her ways, and his many attempts to change her have proven fruitless. This is now perhaps his goodbye to her.
One of the most entertaining parts of these reactions is seeing her always sit back and get into the groove and look at the the back of his head to see if he's vibing to it too. I think she's more open to different styles.
I used to be a manager of Arby's a long time ago. We used to sell chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, and black cow milkshakes. The black cow shake was root beer flavored.
Some great artists have passed through the Dan .. through the years..including Michael McDonald, Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, (legendary session guitarist and multi- instrumentalist) Jeff Porcaro (drummer for Toto), David Palmer (lead singer), Steve Gadd (legendary drummer) & some great jazz musicians including Larry Carlton (guitarist), David Sanborn (great saxophonist).. Haven't found a song yet I haven't liked.. every album is loaded.. including this wonderful song .. hope you keep reacting to them.. thanks for a good review
And you left out Victor Feldman on keys, Joe Sample as well and the amazing Clydie King, Sherlie Matthews, Venetta Fields, Rebecca Louis - on backing vocals.
Its jazz rock, big in the '70s and '80s. Black Cow is a drink, yall correct. It's like a White Russian, but creamier and a little different. Kahlua, chocolate ice cream, liquor, root beer and other stuff. Also the saxophone solos were common during the '70s, '80s and parts of the '90s. Many good asongs from Steely Dan, check out more of them. '70s and early '80s. Lounge music for sure and relaxing, sophisticated lol. Music for the chill bars or coffee shops. BTW, Lots of Steely Dan songs were sampled by rappers. It's smooth jazzy, funk rock music. This song for instance was sampled back in the late '90s/early '00s, East Coast/NY group, Lord Tariq/Peter Gunz "DeJa Vu (Uptown Baby!)" and other songs/artists. But, Lord Tariq/Peter Gunz was a huge hit and very fun song/video and at night clubs.
It's funny...most of their music had dark, angry or depressing themes....but it's presented in such a serene, uplifting way that you hardly notice, haha! I love SD!
tasty song from beginning to end. a real classic, i first heard it this year and it blew me away how you can sneak in a lot of jazzy, "crazy" sounding chords in a radio hit type song if you are subtle enough with it.
I can confirm "The Dan" does help with road rage Lex...usually when I listen to them in the car it does help relax me and I only want to 'occasionally' strangle somebody.
When this came out, I was a teenager into rock, new wave, etc. so this was not my cup of tea. The older I get, the more I appreciate it. So smooth, and the production values are off the charts. Steely Dan has very skilled song structures and musicians.
Steely Dan demanded perfection and wouldn't quit until he got what he wanted. This song (and others) are the result of that... You won't hear anything else like it anywhere.
I've seen many reactions to this song. This is definitely the most unenthusiastic. But I respect honest reactions that aren't overhyped. I think if you listened to the Aja album in full you might have a better appreciation. This song eases you into a great album that was so well produced it was an album of choice used to sell hifi back in the day. Many artists and rappers have sampled this song, even Beyonce.
When I worked at a hifi shop years ago. When someone wanted to listen to the big $ speakers this was the album we would put on. It's quality sound made me a lot of commissions.
Steely Dan already had about five years of great songs and albums before they switched it up to the jazz-pop sound of the Aja album (1977), one of the greatest and most original albums you can hear. It had three singles but all of the songs on the album are equally good. It was the creation of the two founders of Steely Dan and an all star collection of studio musicians. The title song, Aja, is really something special. Donald Fagan has been an amazing writer/producer as a solo artist and made more great albums.
Steely Dan is freaking CREAM OF THE CROP. This album got me into jazz.👍 There's a YT video about the making of Aja with Fagan & Becker. You gotta watch it.
A Black Cow can be an adult beverage or a kids beverage. One uses bourbon and the other doesn't. For the adult version: Combine 1/2 cup of evaporated milk with 2 cups of root beer (your choice on the brand but we used A&W Root Beer for this particular one) and 2 ounces of your favorite bourbon. Mix then split between two tall cocktail glasses. Add ice to fill the glass. Drizzle chocolate sauce on the top. Serve.
I've done some pretty serious road trips with an all-Dan playlist and it is indeed nearly impossible to be mad. Didn't make me sleepy, either, to speak to what Brad's saying.
Amen. I just spent about 5-6 years listening exclusively to modern heavy prog metal. Lots of aggression and complexity. But I’ve kind of grown stale of it and this 70’s jazz/funk is the exact wavelength I’ve migrated over to. The sounds are so gooey and perfect. So much life to it. After a while heavy music (while it has merits) starts to sound fairly robotic
@@rustyshackelford4503 yeah me too, even though I still love me some Opeth (they have many shades) and mastodon (as good as pop metal but with substance), I find myself mellowing and jamming with bands like steely Dan more and more lately.

So chill and smooth. Big fan of Steely Dan. Did you know that in the song Hotel California by the Eagles there is a line where they pay homage to this group 'they stab them with their steely knives, but they just can't kill the beast'.

When I grew up it was just a rootbeer float. In a milkshake glass. Not a cocktail.
Bailey’s Irish cream with vanilla vodka and ice is enjoyable as well.
@Intro to Classic Rock Isn’t it a Black Russian with vodka, no milk?
You sound like you could be a bartender if you're not.

Hard to go wrong with Steely Dan. So many great songs!

My all time fav band. Just saw them last month. Aja is a must. Never realized how good the drums were in this song until I saw it live.

Peter Gunz & Prince Tariq sampled this on their hit, “Uptown Baby.” Steely Dan sampled by everyone, including Kanye.
