Chase Reeves... You are awesome I have owned three gorucks....most recently travelling with my 40L from HK to Italy to Holland to HK across 7 weeks as I had to recover from omicron and get PCR and flights to HK. A lot of running around airports and train stations as well as local food shopping Firstly, the "worthless" slant pocket actually was very handy for extra masks and wipes and tissues (sadly essential gear for today's situation)... So some worth/utility Secondly, I second the trusted companion label. In an uncertain situation where I needed to travel on short notice, the goruck was there. Great peace of mind Thirdly, my 14inch laptop was fine the whole time... No compression problems. To be fair, I invested in a harder after market kydex sheet to give more rigidity I also did scars mods to put handles at both ends.... Which allowed me to do some exercises while cooped up in hotel room In short, I highly recommend this bag!
First “expensive” bag I ever bought. Coming in on 4 years and still wicked strong and holding up with no issues. From EDC to travel and 3 GRT Challenges. The thing is a tank.
I use a 5.11 Rush 12 backpack for daily carry and travel. It has molle webbing all over the bag, but it has very good organization. The bag has a spot for a water bladder for hiking. The new 2.0 now has a laptop sleeve.
Mine arrived yesterday, i have been through at least half a dozen bags in the last couple years and from all the reviews ive seen i got high hopes for this one, people talk about the price tag which I agree it is on the high side but I have spent at least twice the cost of this bag over the years on cheaper bags if this bag can survive my everyday routine for years then it is well worth it.
My € 70 Fjallraven Verdag bag has a slanted front pocket like that ( so the rain will drain off one side ) but it bellows out towards the bottom so it has it's own independent space. The top is flush like that Goruck. Everyone seems to think the Fjallraven is expensive for some reason. I think it's great that Goruck brought the manufacture back to America. I would'nt even mind paying more knowing it keeps jobs in America.
I like your explanatory videos about bags, I wanted to ask you which is of better quality and more comfortable to carry between TripleAughtDesign FastPack Litespeed and Goruck GR1
The Recycled Fire Fighter's 12-hr Battalion backpack, please. I hear it's a less expensive dupe for the GR1. I love his backstory. Now, I just wanna know what you think of the bag. Do tell.
Hey Chase, are you thinking about doing the new Aer bags soon? I'm trying to decide between the new tech sling, commuter bag or the old gym duffle 2 for my daily carry, thanks in advance.
I ended up buying the GR2 today, debated the 34 vs 40L since I'm 6' 200. I already have a 22" roller so guess i should go with something smaller. They also offer 25% OFF for Active Duty Military, Retirees, Veterans, and Military Spouses, as well as First Responders, Government Employees, Teachers and Students.
Has anyone ever tried to take this GR1 on Spirit Airlines as a personal item? I know personal items are supposed to be 18x14x8 inches but I was hoping this bag would still work.
So the GR1 21L also has a women's version. Did they send it to you? I'm a pretty small frame and curious if there are any small women in your life that would be willing models. According to Rule #1 you gotta look cool and well.... nothing looks more ridiculous on me (5'0 - 110) than a massive backpack I'm going to topple over
I've developed an odd habit of watching these reviews as entertainment just because of Chase's style. Like when I'm bored and wanna watch something, I just pop a Chase Reeves bag review.
GR1 21L as a single travel bag: attach your hotel kit on the front molle and drop it when you arrive. And your plane kit in a thin molle pouch on the side. Also drop it at the hotel. And you have your 21L daily carry at destination.
james Truscello : i use the field pocket GR1 where i put my toilettries, antibacterial wipes and kleenex, nuts and energy bar in case of late arrival, an empty bag for my dirty laundry, etc. The cool thing is that it gives a super easy access to remove your toilettries at TSA. No need to open your bag anymore. And the plane kit includes earbuds, eyemask, peppermint stick, pen, ... It is attached with quick release clips so I detach it from the bag when boarding and attach when going out.
I've had an axio swift since I was in second grade and I have abused the shit out of it over the 10+ years I've had it so it's really worn down. Unfortunately, they aren't sold anywhere anymore so hopefully, this will last like my last one did.
Thanks man, I think I might pick one up, love the look of the Minaal but the GR1 just kinda calls to me. Love the videos. I'll use your link if I grab one.
Riley Sellars Any bag for daily carry should work pretty well for school. Just look more at the ones with more organization. The synapse 19 and 25, the new Aer work bags, the new nomatic bag, peak design, prvke 21, etc.
Really happy to see you review the GR1, I bought my GR1 over 4 years ago and it has been my go-to bag ever since. Hundreds of trips, 15 countries and thousands of miles later it is as good as the day I bought it. You are absolutely correct about the personal bond that develops between you and this bag. I own and have used many of the high-end competitors to GoRuck, but non have that intangible quality that comes with the GR1 and GoRuck gear overall.

Chase! I love your videos. You've got to do a video on your thoughts of the goruck price changes. Nearly all their bags are going up by about $100. Ive been wanting one for a long time, but is it really worth $395 for a GR1 or $495 for a GR2???
GoRucks MOLLE is not stitched at the standard interval. Only GR pouches will fit without having to mount a pouch off center. None of my standard MOLLE pouches fit square.
Chase I have a bit of a bag problem, I have PDW, TAD, Mystery Ranch, Arc’teryx LEAF packs and Molle accessories. Every pack works with every pouch I have, interchangeable between manufacturers, MOLLE tacked at 1.5 inches. GR is tacked every 1.8 inches. I have a 26L GR1 and a 34L GR2 both of which I like, I can’t knock GR on quality or design, but the MOLLE just seems like a conscious choice on GRs part to limit their packs to GR pouches if you want a clean mount. I’m doing a group suffering thing with them in June, and I’m hoping the Big Boss shows up. I’m really curious to ask him about this deviation from their cherished “standards”.
Dear Chase , please have a look to Axiom 18 from Triple Aught Design... i just received mine in France , and you know what ... i guess this is the best EDC bag ever.. tough , look great , well thought , organisation up to the user using all available accessories , modular in any sense ... really don’t have any relative to TAD , just have a look to that’s bag , you will be in love .. only down side laptop compartment is not suspended so need to care when bag touch the floor...
Maxpedition AGR and Entity series. More organization. Higher storage capacity. Highly modifiable. Equally if not more durable. Concealed carry design. $150 Cheaper.
Nice review and I love my GR1 21 liter. I use it as my daily carry and sometimes the goruck Echo for really light days. Plus the goruck bags sit high on my back which helps with posture and comfort when carrying for long periods of time. I have tumi bags that become uncomfortable after a long time because they pull down instead of sitting high. I also like to walk with my goruck and not worry about it getting dirty while walking at the park. Plus I enjoy how much my GR1 21L holds!
I have both. I have the 21L for day to day and the 26L for gym use, DJ GIGS, and some travel when driving. For airplane travel I strictly use the 21L. The height of the 21L is perfect for under the seat in front of me and it fits A LOT! I do not use the 26L for day to day due to the height and it is overkill for day to day. I walk at the park with the 21L and I fit all I need plus I can throw a jacket inside the backpack when I dont wear it.
Great review! One question, which would you choose between the 34L gr2 or 26L gr1 for travel? I’ve been waiting for this, glad you have an affiliate link on this one. I got the gr2 34L at your suggestion and now I’ll have to get the 21L for daily/weekend carry. Best reviewer out there!
Thanks for the kind words and for using the links! I’d personally go gr1 26 for travel. Especially if I could get a couple molle attachments I liked. GR2 is just a hair on the big feeling side for the way I like to travel these days.
I'll be honest...wasn't sure there'd be a business papers place in the GR1 as the lifestyle seems more like "I don't need business papers; I need maps for going into the wilderness alone with my bag full of ruck plates!"
Most expensive doesn't mean best. CONDOR, Maxpedition, and Swiss Gear all make packs equally durable, if not more so than GORUCK and for a fraction of the price. I like the simplistic design of the GORUCK, but their asking price for even their smallest packs leaves a lot to be desired. Especially when compared to other brands that provide more for a cheaper price without sacrificing quality. There's another brand out there whose name slips my mind, but they make really expensive packs that are designed to carry a small camp site...and the one I used was absolute trash.
Been using a Synapse 25 for EDC which fits my workstyle well and handles all my dongles... 8-) but always wishing for a little extra "what if" space in case the wife sends me shopping during the day or I want to ditch the jacket in the afternoon. Think this or the 34L GR2 would work? I'm on the larger side so the big bags aren't too much of a concern.
GR1 26 and GR2 32 could both work. GR2 really is too big for my desired daily carry but I’m a different build. Worth a shot if you can resale them decently?
Good point. Really I'm just looking for an excuse to buy a new backpack, so maybe it's just a matter of picking which one. Anything else cross your mind that sort of fits that "synapse 32" category?
Paid $500 for a regular GR1 thinking I’m supporting MADE IN US and getting some quality stuff but guess what it’s no better than maxpedition bags, now it’s $265. What a rip off. The MADE IN US and military related commercial got me again and again.
I have the shooter version and it’s awesome. I use it as a daily work bag. I work out of my car so I use it a little differently. I put my iPad and slim keyboard in the front quick access. Fits perfectly.
This review sealed the deal! I was looking at a few American made bags. After watching this review with the great visuals and colorful commentary my mind was made. I literally went and ordered one (GR1 26L in black camo) immediately afterwards. Now we just need you to expand from bag reviews and cover any product that i may be interested in!
Chase! Check out the Recycled Firefighter Battalion backpack (hopefully they can give you one to review), they look and seem to function very similarly to the Goruck (but at a much lower cost). Worth a look!
ohhh, shoooot. i just looked at the goRuck page and they have a new green color for G1 with tan mole that harks back to WWII, if those mole were green i think i would totally have to explain a new bag to my wife. any body got a spare couch?
Hey Chase, absolutely awesome content and greetings from France ! One question : What would you think about doing a video about 1 travel bag + daily carry set-up ? Because For the moment personnaly I am at a point where I can't go fully minimal with a Synapse for example but I don't want to carry a whole dump on my back and go with the Tortuga outbreaker. Any suggestions for a set up One bag plus 1 inside ? Cheers !
Great question! Large setup for me would be Tortuga Setout with Tom Bihn daylite or qwstion simple pack inside. Then you can go for GR2 or Minaal or Arcido or wandrd prvke 31 instead of setout to make it a smidge smaller if you wanted.
Just sadly realised that I might want to buy the GR2 + a Daily carry for big trip and ALSO a Synapse 25 for smaller trips. Being into bags is hard man...Thank you for the enlightenment Chase :)
Hey man, love your channel! I already bought a one-bag travel bag but that doesn't stop me from watching all of your videos. Will you do a minimal carry daily bag review? I saw the Tom Bihn Daylight backpack in one of your other reviews and it has me scratching my neck for more on it
If you're interested in the GR1 - take a look at Chase's Brown Buffalo Conceal Pack review. As a multi-year GR1 owner/user, I'd say the Brown Buffalo is a better bag design for daily use. I love the GR1 for short national trips that involve some hiking or camping, because it works as a single bag travel bag and as a hiking backpack with the water bladder accommodation. Chase is totally right though, the GR1 is sort of life time companion that you develop an irrational relationship with.
Great review, Chase! Just letting you know, I put my lightweight rain jacket in the front slant pocket. I fold it up so that it’s as flat as possible and slide it in. Using the pocket for something that has minimal weight and minimal thickness means it does not fall to the bottom, and is very easily retrieved - something that can be important when a sudden storm hits. Thanks again for the review. By the way, you should check out the MEI Voyageur. Very old design meaning it stands the test of time, uses quality materials (unlike the junk used by Tortuga), has true rectilinear dimensions (maximising its capacity), and has the most comfortable straps and waistbelt on a bag that features different carrying configurations (shoulder, handle, backpack).
oOcitizenOo You might check out Recycled Firefighter. They make bags that are very similar in design and construction to GoRuck. The biggest difference being that they don't have the molle webbing, and that they are made out of recycled firehoses and bunker gear rather than cordura.
Do you qualify for a discount? They offer 25% off to MIL/LE/FIRE, teachers, government employees and many more. That 25% off sure takes the sting out of the price.
Great review as always! I have the GR2 and also this 26L GR1 that I use daily for work. These bags really are a lifelong investment. I previously used the Tom Bihn Synapse 25, but the mesh bag pad started fraying after 6 months and while it has lots of organization, it gets real uncomfortable carrying more than 10lbs or so. When I'd throw my laptop in there with work stuff, the shoulder pads would dig into my shoulders, not so with the Goruck bags. I love Goruck's slick, boxiness, minimal design and ability to carry heavier loads than most comparable brands. They're certainly not inexpensive by any means, but they do offer a substantial discount to MIL/LE/FIRE, teachers and GOV employees that takes the sting out of the purchase.
Hey NOMAP, I am on the fence about purchasing the goruck 26L for my everyday use (Grad student, work, etc.) Do you feel this bag is too large? Just hoping to get your opinion. Thanks!
Thanks for the reply Travis! I'm a slightly bigger guy, 5'11" and almost 200 pounds. In some videos the 26L seems like a perfect size, and in others it seems slightly large. In most videos the 21L definitely looks like it would be a little too small on my back. If you don't mind me asking, what does your EDC look like? Is the bag rather full for you on a daily basis? Thanks again for your opinion!
Vincen Franco Well, I’m 6’4”, 280 lbs. so I think it’s just right ;) I have it loaded with Plenty with LOTS of room to spare. I think the 21L is too small for EDC but I’m a “big” guy. Hope this helps...
Any chance of you getting one of the Recycled Firefighter bags? They seem to similar in design to GoRuck at half the price. Would be interesting to see side by side.
if that bag had one or two pockets on the top that were built with dimension so i could get my shith in and out without worry about how tight i packed my cloths i would sooooooo buy one or two. love the simple look, love the material but when i am 8 hours in a plane i want to reach the snacks, the earbuds, the battery pack, the splitter so my wife can listen in on my movie and the extra underpants that you might need when your 60 without fuching asking someone to hold my drink so i can stand up and pull my bag from under the seat and apologize for hitting the lady in the head. the synapse is so not cool but the easy access pockets make it so i don't care, they are so stupid easy to use that i don't have to remove my bag out from under the seat most of the time. i would love to be cool and still have some easy access dedicated space kind of pocket on a GoRuck and i would be soooo sold For EVER! know what im saying! ya feel me bro!

Can you review the: Mastiff Outdoor Tactical EDC Backpack 1000D Nylon MOLLE Military Gear Dayruck?
I would love to see you review the Rush 24 bag by 5.11
21L is definitely the best EDC backpack money can buy.
@Chase- do a GR3 review!!!
The bag is good but , you can’t beat homemade, if you had to fill that bag up with guns an run, they would be pushing on your back
No zipper draw string Velcro
There needs to be a "Business...Papers" patch.
Two thumbs up review! Do you mind telling the viewers how tall you are?
5’10”
Chase Reeves ah.. me, too.
What you think about the TAD litespeed?
monitofca bump
I've been using the Litespeed for the last few months, will have a review coming on theperfectpack.com soon.
this is amazing fun .... i have a many bags....ordered the PD travel (kickstarter ) but still i like this
This review sealed the deal!
Jack Karnaghan they do look pretty great and a good bit cheaper. But no lifetime warranty sadly
Great review! I bought the bag because of it.
How tall are you Chase?
5’10”
Love your videos man
Thanks!
ohhh, shoooot. i just looked at the goRuck page and they have a new green color for G1 with tan mole that harks back to WWII, if those mole were green i think i would totally have to explain a new bag to my wife. any body got a spare couch?
Have you ever reviewed or used a Manhattan Portage. Thoughts?
Hello. What is your height?
Recycled Firefighter bags are totally inspired from this design.
How tall are you?
5'10"
Thank you! I’m the same hight and thought you were shorter, until I saw your video I didn’t realize how large they are!
SMFH, GoRuck is making their stuff outside the USA.
I saw the Tom Bihn Daylight backpack in one of your other reviews and it has me scratching my neck for more on it
Check out the qwstion video I did too.
Chase. Please review Crazy Ants Tactical 55 liter bag. I found it useful for a 45 mile hike through Iraq. Keep up the great work. Thankyou.
This was an excellent review, and i couldn't agree more with you( especially when it comes to the top inside pocket as being the quick access)
I wish this bag sell in indonesian.
This BP looks more like a BP for a survival gear, not for a daily carry. And its price made me sad again :(
but overall quality is outstanding
oOcitizenOo You might check out Recycled Firefighter.
That 25% off sure takes the sting out of the price.
baddest f***ing reviewer on the tube. thanks for the good S*** chase.
Well said.
Hey NOMAP, I am on the fence about purchasing the goruck 26L for my everyday use (Grad student, work, etc.) Do you feel this bag is too large? Just hoping to get your opinion. Thanks!
I too have the 26L and I would say it's perfect!!! Definitely a great size for EDC in my opinion...Not sure if that helps but it's my 2 cents ;)
PLEASE REVIEW CRUMPLER BAGS!!!!
Love Love Love these zippers and the pocket sucks. lol
Interested to hear your take on the Evergoods CPL24. Combo GoRuck and Patagonia startup
Hey man !
Good morning, just wanted to say thank you for all the great video and all the information you put out there for us.
Can you review some more camera backpacks? Like Brevitē?
it's like a call and response...when you say papers....I say business papers!!!
Any chance of you getting one of the Recycled Firefighter bags? They seem to similar in design to GoRuck at half the price. Would be interesting to see side by side.
#recycledfirefighter Way better at the price point.
Yes, gonna happen!
if that bag had one or two pockets on the top that were built with dimension so i could get my shith in and out without worry about how tight i packed my cloths i would sooooooo buy one or two. love the simple look, love the material but when i am 8 hours in a plane i want to reach the snacks, the earbuds, the battery pack, the splitter so my wife can listen in on my movie and the extra underpants that you might need when your 60 without fuching asking someone to hold my drink so i can stand up and pull my bag from under the seat and apologize for hitting the lady in the head. the synapse is so not cool but the easy access pockets make it so i don't care, they are so stupid easy to use that i don't have to remove my bag out from under the seat most of the time. i would love to be cool and still have some easy access dedicated space kind of pocket on a GoRuck and i would be soooo sold For EVER! know what im saying! ya feel me bro!
Vertx Stuff please!!! specially the EDC Ready Pack
Great. Just love my GR1 and my Bullet and my.....
Great review man ! Hopefully you'll get your hands on a CPL24. I'd like to have your opinion on this one !
