After 2 years of looking at this video on and off (along with other videos) I finally listened to Chase... I liked the look, was always drawn to it... so I just bought it. The current sale (along with the government employee discount)... I was able to get the black version cheaper than the peak designs travel pack... and the fact that I can still get the version made in the USA helped me make this decision. After watching other reviews I also got the custom kydex frame sheet from ruck customs. Hopefully I will only be watching these videos for entertainment going forward.
Good, honest, respectable review! Price point steers a lot of people away and understandably so, but sometimes quality does come with a heavy price. I have the GR1 26L and couldn't be more pleased with how it handles daily abuse. I've also used it as a daily bag and successfully as a 3 day pack for a few trips. Was able to fit 3 days worth of clothes, toiletries, Ipad, flip flops, and chargers just fine. 34-40L would be great for a week or possibly longer with access to a laundry service. Accessibility can be a bit of an issue I agree, I get myself around that by living by the adage, what's easy for me to access is also as easy for anyone else to access as well.
Chase, I've been watching your vids for about three months now trying to find the right bag for a month long trip to the Levant and I just ordered the GR2 34L. Thank you for helping me make this decision and I did use your link. Keep up the great work man!
I bought an olive drab 40L GR2 back in 2014 from GORUCK when they were discontinuing that color and were discounting that color from their inventory. I paid $295 for my brand spankin' new 40L OD GR2! That ruck brand new right now would cost you $495. Best travel bag ever! Big enough for a week's vacation, but small enough for airline carry-on.
Great video man!!!! Saw it years ago when I was about to buy my GoRuck. If you are a persone 5’ 10” or taller just go ahead and get the 40l. Use to have the 34L it was great but for me it felt to small on my back. As a daily Carrie though, it is a huge bag. But if you’re planning on doing a whole month trip like I did in Europe it’s totally worth it. For daily get the 34L. Ps: I’m currently in the Army and I have put A shit ton of stuff in it. Multiple ranges and multiple night in the field. Thank for all your videos brother. 🤙🏽🤙🏽🕺🏻🕺🏻
I'm was just ever so slightly regretting not getting the 40L. Now i'm one trip in and 34L is working just fine so far. I'm 6' 190lb and it still seems pretty big on me. It was fairly comfortable to wear. I've been pretty lazy the last couple years so a little worn out with physical activity. Though, I had no problem with this bag mostly full while riding a bike around the Forbidden City in Beijing. I ended up leaving with more clothes than I needed. I'm sure as I fine tune my gear that I may end up with too much room. I guess that's not a bad thing as Id like to save room for things to bring back from my travels. As for daily carry? i agree no way, not for more than a few hours. I actually have 2 packable bags stored in the main compartment mesh pockets. Matador FreeRain 24 and a Gonex 20l backpack. Though that means i need to bring my laptop sleeve. Id be interested in a packable bag that is padded enough to carry a laptop at the destination.
GORUCK will also modify any bag in their lineup for a nominal fee. Best mods for travel for the GR2 are side compression straps and a base handle. Makes getting it in and out of overhead bins a dream.
Thanks for this video. At x-years, the vid is still valid. For larger bags over smaller, specifically the 40l over the 34l, I advocate for it when I return from traveling. W/small gifts, the 40l is has the volume for those trinkets.
Watched your review a few time and finally got a 34L GR2. Love your channel and you sold me on the 34L. I love it!!! Thank you and keep the awesome videos and review coming.
G'day Chase great review, I've had the 40L for a few years (and it has a shortened external pocket) and traveled 6 continents with it. Every time I use the bag it just feels like I'll break before it does. On their warranty, they don't offer free repair for stuff like motorbike accidents, bullet holes, etc. which you can imagine might be a bit more common with goruck than your average bag. Cheers!
The best Goruck review I've seen. Spot on. With the exception, maybe, of the 34 vs 40 liter preference. I've been rocking the 40 liter GR2 for overseas travel and it is the bomb. Sure, it's a little heavy but you know your stuff is going to arrive fine. I managed to get a blue one back in the day just so I wouldn't look too GI Joe/Special Ops. But, I agree the black is punk and often I wish I had just gone with the black. I agree also about the pockets. I dont use them much and would've preferred one big space. I bought a GR3 because that is the primary difference but found it to be just a little too huge. I promptly sold it after one trip (it was more of a "backpacker" deal than a "one-bag" deal). If anyone out there is considering Goruck just watch this video once or twice. Chase hits all the good and bad. FYI, I have bought in completely and also have a 10 liter bullet ruck and, after watching Chase's review of the GR1, am saving my pennies to get one to make it my EDC. Then I can throw away every other bag I own.
Had the 40 for a few years now. Got it on discount. Love this bag. All of my travel is done with it. Find a friend that served in the military and get a large discount.
I've had my GR0 for 11 years and it looks brand new. I've been to four continents with it, and use it for daily carry around Dublin as well. THese really are lifetime bags.
After watching this video 50 times you've convinced me to get the GR2 34L. I love my GR1, it's the 21L, but this bag looks like the perfect one bag travel bag. I also really like the Patagonia MLC you reviewed but that's even bigger at 45L. Your videos rock man keep them up. When I get the bag I'll make sure to use your link and keep supporting the cause. Cheers!
Same thoughts...if you’re saying the 34L is too small, I’d like to know what you’re using it for. Is it an EDC bag? Is it a travel bag? Work bag? Gym bag? Etc... Also how tall are you and what do you weigh? I’m 6’1” 250lbs and I’m looking to purchase a pack that’s sufficient as a EDC bag.
I'm 6'7", 280lbs, I'm not in shape but not out of shape if that makes sense. I own the 34L and it really is great for me, it almost sits perfect on my upper torso. One thing I never see in reviews is the ability to lengthen the shoulder straps, it can really go low down. As an EDC, going to work, weekend trips, weeklong trips, school, it works well for me. Great review video. Thanks.
Hey, im wondering whether the bag is still holding up for you. I am looking for a new EDC since me 5.11 rush24 is breaking down. I think 26l is too small, but the reviewer is quiet explicit that he does not like this goruck bag as a EDC. How is that experience for you? I am 6’4 feet and broadly built. Cheers
@@Leon1Das-MJPZ the 34l is a bit to big for my EDC and I’ve actually transitioned to the 16l Bullet for that. The 34l is still going strong though and the only real sign of use has been the occasional stray fiber starting to break off. 10/10 would recommend the 34l but don’t sleep on the 26l GR1, it has a good upside.
A note on the SCARS repair program, they're fantastic. If they can't fix the bag they'll send you a replacement. I put my first bag through the ringer and had some wear on the zippers after a few GORUCK events. SCARS looked it over and decided that it was too much work for a repair and instead sent me a brand new bag. GORUCK's "normal" wear would destroy other bags, if you don't believe me just check out some videos from their events.
AYEEE these came back in stock earlier and I got the 34L! They were only up for like 20 minutes till they sold out!! Finally gonna get my PUBG Level 3 Backpack!!
I own a few different GoRuck bags. They are outstanding and cannot be beaten. I had a GR1 (21 - black) but my oldest took it over for a flight gear bag...Grr, the things we do for our kids, right? It was my EDC bag and it was perfect. I replaced it with a GR1 (26 - black) which I like, but it is just a bit tall and heavy when loaded out (more room means more stuff). I also have a GR1 (21- multicam) for deer hunting and I like it but actually would like it in 26 liters for daylong hunts. Finally, I have always wanted a GR2 (40) for travel and am planning a few in the next year, some international. Thanks for making a great video review (best I have seen yet) because you convinced me to buy the 34 liter. I appreciate you pointing out how international flights may not allow the 40 liter. Let us consider that the airlines are always changing packing rules and it is foreseeable that the carryon size will shrink in the future. Currently, GoRuck is having a sale on some of their GR1's and GR2's. Buy one, you will not be disappointed.
I’ve had experience with their warranty and it is closer to a lifetime warranty. I had zipper fail and the zipper was compromised through normal ware and tear. They completely replaced my bag with brand new one. No questions. All I had to was since them the bag. Easy peazy. They even turned my old bag in to an zippered pocket and sent it back to me.
@21:47 you can get an optional padded hip belt from GORUCK that attaches to molle on the sides as well as a sternum strap if that’s something you need.
I've got a GR1, pack it with cubes, awesome for travel. I've got a Tom Bihn Tristar also that I thought I wanted for one bag travel, but every time I pack it, I decide I just don't like having my stuff spread out between 5 different compartments and multiple pockets. The Goruck is just one big space... throw it all in, go.
Chase! Love your videos, keep up the good work and objective assessments you do a great job. I live in SE Portland myself, 6'3", 240lbs work out regularly.. basically a large dude. I agree with your assessment of the 32 vs 40 liter 100%. I bought both and for my size the 40L wasn't necessarily overly large but for regular normal carry it looked ridiculous and I simply don't need the extra space for 99% of what I do. Maybe if I was in a week+ plus travel situation it might make sense but otherwise the 34 liter is what you want.
Can they add a better front pocket? I know this is a dated review but it doesn't seem the design has changed and doing hours and days of research into various bags, and some suggestions of what to look into led me here... and a bit of customization might make all of the difference on the pack as a EDC and just frankly everything bag. I was looking into leather, waxed canvas, hiking packs, just wanting something durable that could weather anything... not exactly wanting the modern tactical look... but build quality and durability is hard to argue when that is a big part of what you are looking for over aesthetics. Wanting to invest in something that is worth the money, and isn't at all going to require much, if any anxiety.
For the day bag solution, get a GORUCK 10L Bullet, and put it in the outside compartment. And, now that you have a ruck, you should come and do an event!
Incredible bags! I’ve been waiting for you to get your hands on these too! I bought the 26l GR1, the 34l and 40l GR2 a while back and ended up keeping the 40l GR2. I’m 6’6” and the other two were just too small for my frame. The 40l fits me like a day pack. You’re right though, most people should go for the 26l GR1 or the 34l GR2. I think Goruck recommends the 34l if you’re under 6’ and the 40l for anyone taller than that. Thanks for the great review! As you probably know, there’s quite the community built around Goruck and I’ve found some killer 3rd party “non-tacticool” upgrades! (Not my own) If you have any interest hit me up! Thanks again for your work both at fizzle and here!
Really torn between the 34 or the 40. Chase makes his hard sell for the 34, but having travelled for years with a 45 L Tortuga I don't see how he makes the 34 work.
just to note: the "business papers" pocket in the main compartment is for holding a hydration bladder (there's hole under the top handle to run the drinking hose through)
Yup, it also can hold steel weights that are used during the events that GORUCK puts on. I carry mine every day, so i put books in it, and the occasional water bladder too when camping. Love mine!
I could, but know this - they're essentially all the same. I bought a bunch of different ones on amazon on while ago... all of them were the same. So, get a handful, they're not expensive, and just make the decision yourself based on what feels right to you.
excuse me.... thats not green, its wasabi....... sorry, couldn't resist, the only thing i don't like about Tom Bihn is the name of their colors. if i asked you what color is Northwest Sky what would you say? Wrong! not blue, its gray, they have some diffrent jack wagon name for blue. But to the point: I think chase is high, not all packing cubes are the same, i have a bunch from ebay and amazon and played with the minaal cubes before i returned them. BUT the Tom Bihn cubes work Great and are superior! they come in two varieties; Aether cubes are the light version that you see in the videos i believe his is a 12x12 made for Aeronaut 30. the Halcyon cubes TB makes are the more beefy style cubes and they just f***ing rock. nice sturdy fabric with body holds its shape a bit, fantastic strong mesh and #5 YKK. I bought one and promptly bought several more. I folded my shirts and pants into a 12x12 and they stay great. Not cheap, no sir but you will like them, you will like the zippers and the way that tough mesh gives a bit.
I have 2 olive Topo design ones. Very strong zips ! Matching Dopp kit with matching accessory bags for tech and first aid . Really love the brand ! Solid shiz !! 🦄
Finally, Chase and GoRuck! I have been wanting to get a GoRuck for years now, lately considering Minaal (thanks to your review), but now I might actually get a GR2 (thanks to you too, hahaha). When I do, I'll make sure I click that buy button there. Good job with the video, keep 'em coming.
Great review. Hilarious guy, charming, honest and genuine. Personality definitely came out during the review. I ruck for fun and have an Alaskan Bush trip next month, and this review may have sold me on the GR2. Thanks for the honest assessment.
Chase Reeves ended up purchasing a GR2 through your referral, and got the 34L based on your assessment. Nice job! I don't need to watch more bag reviews, but if you set up a Vlog on daily life or something, I'd be interested. You have a fun relateable personality. Show us around Portland maybe? Just some ideas!
I have a gr1 and a gr2. I am 6 foot 4 in and own the 40l gr2. I have used it on multiple weekend and week long trips. I have never had any problems getting it on a plane. Does anyone know, is it true that "you cannot take the 22in bag on most European airlines?" I have a trip planned to Copenhagen and am planning on taking my gr2 40L. The videos and charts on goruck's website clearly explain which size of bag to purchase based on height and build. For a week-long trip I can carry my camera equipment color a change of clothes, rain jacket, Chargers, laptop, and a book.
I only have a GR1, a GR2, a Bullet Ruck, a Kit bag, and an 80 lb sand bag with two filler bags. And a GoRuck hat. I've done multiple GoRuck events, using their bags. I always recommend the bags. Most of my work friends have at least one GoRuck bag. Walking around on post and I see them all over the place. I also recommend you go on one of their classic GoRuck Tough events. Get a cool patch for that Velcro rectangle.
Great review as always Chase! Just to clarify, the 34L doesn't support an Alienware. I have the GR2 34L (love it) and the Alienware 15r3 and it doesn't fit. Saludos desde Argentina!
The flag velcro is not backwards, I'm pretty sure its symbolic of how the soldiers have the flag on their shoulder. It is going forwards like you are charging into battle.
I've had a GR2 40L for about a year, now, and I love it for carry-on travel. It's big, but so am I-- 6' and 250+--and it carries just fine. Bigger guy I guess means bigger clothes, because I can fill the 40 pretty easily for a casual week of unpredictable weather, bringing whatever toiletries and electronics I'd want to keep myself entertained. Incidentally I just bought a second GoRuck, the 26L GR1, for my everyday bag. I was carrying an Osprey Momentum 34L and it was crazy comfortable and useful but it just had too much, I dunno, camping nerd? Nerds that camp? Is that a thing? Too much camping nerd to carry it to a professional event on days I was commuting. So I bought and returned a Peak Design Everyday Backpack 20L (somehow too big and too small at the same time? Too weird for EDC if I'm not carrying camera + lenses, and the feel of the zippers and inside flap pockets was disappointing), an Osprey Cyber (didn't scratch the itch, didn't feel as well made as other Osprey) and an Incase ICON 20L (size felt right, but had to work to use the pockets--and still left several unused, and that felt wasteful. Too much space felt dedicated to areas I wasn't using). Once I was comfortable in the 20L range for everyday, GoRuck was the one to try. I'm ready to stop looking for a while, and I've actually enjoyed carrying this one for the last few weeks. Oh, and on briefcase-needing days I'll rotate between a Filson 256 and a Tumi briefcase that's already an heirloom--inherited it from my dad. Your videos fuel my nuttiness, no doubt. Keep up the good work.
+Chase Reeves I'd be curious to hear, after your experience now with the GoRuck, how you think it stacks up to your 9 Killer Bags selections? I guess the GR2 would have to compete in the "one bag travel" arena, and the GR1s in an everyday category...
Thanks, Tom. I was planning on getting a 40L, but started questioning that after Chase's convincing push for the 34L. I'd be curious to know what height/weight Chase is. I'm also 6', 250+ and a pair of my jeans folded up are pretty large. Not to mention a pair of size 11-12 shoes. My wife (110 lbs) can fit a week's worth of her clothing in a book bag. Obviously, clothing size makes a huge difference.
+Trevor Smart I might not be the most efficient packer but I can get my 40 really packed out with a large and a medium amazon basics packing cube, a tumi hanging toiletry bag (probably the size of a small cube) , a small camera case (fuji x100 sized, a socks cube?), a baseball cap or two, some flip flops or light sneakers, an iPad, dongles, and usually a light jacket in the laptop area. I find that I either bring the toiletry bag (fits dongles) or I stuff all that gear into the pouches on the GR2, but not both. They sort of steal space from one another and a lot of the best pouch storage (imo) is along the top of the bag, so it'll start to compete and eventually get too tight to close the clamshell with any other gear in between.
I was happy to read a comment by someone who’s also on the “BIG MAN” scale as I am. I’m 6’1” 250lbs and it’s kind of hard to decide on the packs when everyone reviewing it is like 5’7” 160 lbs...lol. Since you purchased the GR1 26L, can you give me your thoughts on that and how it’s been working out for you as an EDC? I’ve heard and reviewed that some have issues with the straps not being long enough for the “BIG MEN” around town...I want to get the GR1 26L as my EDC bag but I’ve been using the Recycled Firefighter “The Chief” for a little over a year now and it just doesn’t have enough room for everything I’d like to carry.
I've carried the 40 for 6 years now and I can barely fit all my gear in there. I'm 5'8" and it fits well. It's pretty beat up now and ready for its first trip to SCARS.
Gr1 26L = $700 Australian dollars ! That’s bonkers .. I love the backpack and I know it’d last me a lifetime but that’s just it . I don’t want a bag to last me a lifetime . I get bored of the same shit , it’s why I have several bags . That price range for a backpack is insane . You can get 2 x Prvke 31L bags + have a hunj left over for Scooby snacks !! Love the bag but the price for me can’t be justified .. killer review as always Chase !! ✌🏼
I currently have a GR1 that i use as an edc bag along with a Tom Bihn 25. I have about a half dozen bags just laying around doing nothing. I may have to eBay those and get a GR2 considering how much I love my GR1 and how much I love this video
Not sure how many times I watched this, was waiting for you to review one of these. I purchased the 34l at your suggestion, not sure if it will be large enough tho. I was wondering if you ever done state how/what you pack (a mini review of the packing cubes) and your height (for reference comparison of bags). That’ll being said, love the reviews and will continue to watch. Best reviewer on UA-cam. Update: the 34l was actually just the right size. I was able to fit multiple weeks worth of winter clothes and an extra pair of boots in a single bag on multiple trips with different airlines. Although, I stuck a packable matador freerain for a daybag. The 40l would have just allowed me to take things I might like to have but have made it many times without; the piorama a10 bag I use if I might need to check something on the return home (check it out) An eagle creek tech (medium) packing cube fits the width and approximately half of the height in the 34 with the packing cube rotated. If a person had six (80% full) of these packing cubes, it may be possible to pack 4 in the main compartment with the final two in the secondary compartment. It would be stuffed to the gills and the tertiary/built-in pocket(s) would likely be unusable though. The only problem is I want purchase two other Goruck bags since buying this one; a gr1 for daily personal carry and a bullet for work tools/gear. I plan to donate other bags I have before all of these. The reason, I don’t believe I’ll need anything else again and think these will last a lifetime. That being said, this bag won’t fit everyone’s needs or desires, it is rough and tough (physically), and all the products “buy once, cry once” priced. Again, you’re the best reviewer on UA-cam. 👍🏻
You could EASILY use the 26l GR1. You'd be better off, and then you have an EDC bag when you get there. That's the bag you need. There's so much of the GR2 you're not using. Why carry so much bag that you're not using? Get a GR1
The flag isn't backward. It's supposed to be like the flag worn on the shoulder of those in uniform which "assaulting forward" as if you were carrying a flag and running forward with it.
I know this review is ancient but I'm hoping you still pay attention to it. I literally am 6'10" so I figure my frame could handle the bigger backpack more easily. However, I still want the 34L as it passes more airline bars for carry-on sizing. Can you truly live out of the 34L? Remember, my clothes literally weigh more and are bigger too. Would the 34L almost be too SMALL on my back? I've worn backpacks before where they were comically small on me and I don't want the same thing happening.
I have a lot of experience with Goruck, and whilst they do make great bags, they are so so much heavier than everything else. They don't breathe at all, and they will chew through your clothes. If someone made this bag in something lightweight I'd be happy. Also the GR2 is particularly problematic, the more you fill up the main compartment the harder all those zip compartments are to use. All of which add to the weight issue.
Hi Chase. First off, love the videos. I’ve been a subscriber for some time now. I’m curious about the newer 26L GR2 for EDC. I’m 5’10”. Wondering if 26L is too small for the extra pockets, or if it hits a sweet spot for EDC. Thanks for your insight.
Great review! The GR2 34 seems the best built bag on the market, but way over engineered. Why all those pockets? Why the second thinner top compartment, it just adds more material and is unnecessary. I wish they made this exact same bag, but w/ a minimal approach: one big compartment and a side handle for briefcase carry when needed. The cost is high but what annoys me is their lack of considering how people actually travel.
It's made for multiple uses, travel, camping, exercises, events, etc. The second compartment inside he put his shoes in is for ruck weights or a hydration bladder. This is the larger version of their bags, they have simpler GR1s, and even simpler Ruckers that have fewer sections and compartments. I have this GR2 for travel and every day going to work, and a Rucker for exercise, camping, etc. Love mine.
Great review Chase, love your videos! When you said this is a 50-100 year bag, do you feel the same about the Synapse 25? Slightly lower price point but one of your favorite bags I've seen you review
+Thomas Moore gosh I just don’t know... I don’t know for sure if the goruck can last that long either. But getting 10 years out of either makes the purchase worthwhile. And they’d both EASILY do that.
Hi Chase! A fan from Vietnam. I agree with every word of your statement at the end of the video. If I travel more than 4-5 times in the next 2 years, this is definitely the bag Im going to buy. I recently buy the Errant from Boundary, can I have your suggestion for packing cubes that fix it the most? Do you think Boundary's packing cube is enough for a 3-4 days trip?
Hey Chase, thanks for the review. So you kinda knocked the wind out of me when you quoted the USD 400 price tag until....you mentioned this being an heirloom piece, something I have been in the market for. However, I have one caveat on a piece like this, as my current travel bag is covered in the (slightly) cheesy travel patches from everywhere I have been so my kids can see where I have been when it is passed down to them to explore the world. Considering the intensity of the build quality and materials is it possible to sew these patches onto the outside of the bag or would you need a needle as big and hefty as the 40L?!?!
hey man, big fan of your reviews here. Just wanted to give you a heads up that the links to "buy" the GR2 both redirect back to the video. Hopefully this hasn't cost you any kickback scrilla!
So you've reviewed a million bags. Can I ask what you would recommend for a college student? Need room for books, and enough organization for pens and stuff. I don't buy a GR1 but I was looking at osprey comet.
Hey man, great video. I'm a big fan of GoRuck, Have a 26L GR1, love it for pretty much all the reasons you outlined here and in your GR1 video. The $295 plus shipping and duties was worth it for my GR1. I cycle to worth all year long, and my GR1 has been through it all, and has performed like a champ. I wrecked the bag (my fault), and the SCARS warranty was amazing. Very reasonable to replace everything that needed fixing, very quick turn around, stellar customer service, FYI. I was thinking of upsizing to a GR2 for traveling, weekends etc. Just more space to carry stuff like a change of clothes for two people when my daughter throws up on a plane (true story), or I dunno, business papers I guess. I'm in Canada, so the $395 is hard to justify. Dunno if you every used something like a 511 Rush 24, but wondering how this would compare to that. Aesthetics aside, (511 stuff looks way more tactical. Really wish they would make a slick Rush, or just go partial Molle like GoRuck) the bags seem pretty similar. Materials: check, pockets/compartments/organizational capability: check. I can grab a Rush 24 for $150 Canadian OR pay $395 US (plus shipping/duties) for a GR2. I hummed and hawed over the GR1 for ages, but don't regret the expense at all. Buy once, cry once. Just wondering what your thoughts are. Keep up the good work!
Also, just a follow up, but I realize that there are a bunch of Rush 24 videos out there. I'm asking because I'm interested in your take. Pretty much all the reviews are by guys with names like Tactical fighter, Freedom defender, Tactical caveman, and are basically load outs of multiple knives, axes, flashlights and fire starting kits, filmed with a digital camera on the windiest day of the year. Just want a regular guy's take on whether or not the bags are pretty much equivalent, without a giant rant about how Obamacare is a communist plot, and I'm a sheeple for not carrying a fixed blade machete/water filter everywhere I go. Thanks, again!
Hahahaha! You got me on this one :) gigglin. Haven’t used the 511 bag you’re mentioning, unfortunately. Have seen bags from Triple Aught Design, and I’ll say they’re made just as well... there’s so much story around goruck, and they really are dope... cry once is right. I personally like the warranty and design and carry enough to go for the GR2 so long as it’s the only damn bag I’m getting for a few years. Great questions/comments
Hey Chase, thanks for getting back to me. I'll have to check out the Triple Aught Design. All things being equal, I would rather just go with another GoRuck. Man, I love, love, love what they do. Got my GR1 as my go to bag, a field pocket (makes the bag much more useful, IMO), and a couple pairs of their shorts (amazing). BUT the sticker price on a GR2 is over $500 Canadian BEFORE duties, taxes, and shipping. That's basically a flight once this thing rolls up. Once you have it though, you've got that thing forever. Thanks again, man!
Thanks for calling out the terrible quick access pocket. No idea why they can't make it expand out like every other manufacturer. Or at least not have it go all the way to the bottom.
Awesome video as always man. Boy does it make me glad I went with my Minaal Carry On 2.0 and Minaal Daily. This is just way too expensive with too many not quite right features.
Samuel Dunn what are your thoughts and experience using the Minaal 2.0 and the day bag? Thinking in purchasing those, I am torn between Minaal and the Goruck gr2
@@superseiyan Has worked great for me. I think it depends on how you are traveling for 2 weeks. For example, if taking a 2 week long trip and you know you can re-wash or re-use clothing, it would work out great. Otherwise it would be a perfect carryon companion bag to a duffle.
@Chase: Just wondering how 34l compare with Peak Design travel 45 backpack in therms of how much stuff i can get into it. Looking spec then peak design is comparable with GR2 40 version? To bad you did not put them both on your back.
Hey Chase. Did you really have issues with the airlines not letting you carry-on the 40L GoRuck? Or are you just talking about what they have listed on their websites?
I just got my GoRuck GR2 delivered yesterday. I got the 40!! I wish I saw your video before. I just got it because it was bigger for the same money! It is a massive bag and It would be crazy for an EDC bag. I am thinking about one bag travel. It seems like it is incredibly built and such great quality.... Having said that...$400 for a BACKPACK!!! Are you nuts??? I am going to buy a $100 backpack that appears similar and see if I can justify the $300 difference.. I love the thought of leaving this bag to my kids someday and it really is heirloom quality.. but the sticker shock is killing me..
You'll love it after using it... I hate the zippers on cheap bags, as the bags don't hold the zipper well enough to unzip with one hand. I have had a dozen or so other backpacks, but I'm selling those and sticking with my gorucks.
What do you think about the new GR2 with 210D cordura for that smooth, breathy feel on ya backside. I was just trying to get the original tank to be back in stock and just purchased the slick back. A little worried it won’t be as durable. Yours truly,ICU RN…I can wear out a pack!
Big Fan of your videos, man. I have the GR1, which I bought to carry around weight as physical therapy after an accident. Then I saw the whole 'GoRuck' culture. The GR1is 26L; it's just like the GR2 without the top section. You are absolutely right-on about the quality of these bags, AND the comfort. I bought their sternum strap and I find it helps even more. I'm about to take the GR1 on a solo trip to Copenhagen in the winter. I bought the GR2 during one GoRuck's not-too-frequent sales, and it seems •almost• too big, but I would have some room in case I acquire items on my journey. It's definitely going to outlive me. Iceland Air- my absolute fave- is starting to offer lower ticket prices for one-bag travelers. Bags have to fit a certain dimension that the GR's are perfect for.
Awesome review as always! I love this bag but it's too expensive, especially for us at Europe with the taxes! What do you think about Monolith Daypack 22L? Will you make a review for this? It's possible to pack it for 3-5 days trip? (minimal travel)
Simon Kemp many thanks for the reply! I have seen the review from Bo, also great review, but again I am not sure if the 22lt space will be enough for 3-5 days! I'll ask Bo! Thanks again!
Marie kondo makes me wish I was a sweater. Great review. Wow she is a big bag! If it was just 20L bigger it could have 4 wheels and a motor and you could drive your luggage through the airport! Wouldn’t that be the nuts!
I’m 5’2 and I love my 40L lol I remember watching this video when it came out….3 ish years later I just bought my 4th GoRuck bag. Thanks Chase you stated my GoRuck addiction lol
I want a bag that could last me 100 year, but I feel like not having a water bottle and and a good quick access pocket might be death by 1000 cuts. Not sure I could last using it that long because I would always be a little frustrated. For me I want my travel bag to also be my EDC. Maybe I will look at the 26 or the bullet mentioned in the comments but as tempting as these bags are that might make it a pass for me.
Hey Chase, thanks for this. It helped me set the stone and go with the GR2 34L. One thing: What is the name/brand of that big packing cube? Thanks bro! Just subscribed!
“But just in case war breaks out and you find yourself on the dark side of Prague....” 😂😂
Awesome, man! Great choice.
I have the GR1 and I stopped looking for backpack for a long time. It's a heirloom piece for sure.
GORUCK makes a 10L that makes for a nice daily carry.
Cheers!
Awesome, Tom!
4 years on..and this is still the best review of the GR2.
{bows humbly}
6 years on now -- continues to be the best review of the GR2
Had the 40 for a few years now. Got it on discount. Love this bag. All of my travel is done with it. Find a friend that served in the military and get a large discount.
Can the 40 be accepted carryon (on overhead bin) for international flights?
@@superseiyan each airline can change the rules but I never had an issue with it in Asia.
Cheers!
Excellent review. I bought 34L based on it, and promptly returned it. Too small. 40L better for me/my size.
RDubya73
I am 6'1 do you recomend a 40L? I need it for my travels around Europe
So what do you use it for that made it seem too small?
Yeah, a 40L bag fits a dude arm better.
I like the 34 because it's high and tight on my back.
Good stuff. The 40 is great and I carry one everywhere. Best bag Ive ever owned.
Would like to hear comparison to Tom Bihn Brain Bag. Mine is 15 years old, been to Europe, South America, college and work. Still looks new.
Thanks, Chris!
Really torn between the 34 or the 40. Chase makes his hard sell for the 34, but having travelled for years with a 45 L Tortuga I don't see how he makes the 34 work.
So if I understand correctly, you would recommend the GR2 40L as a edc if you’ve got the frame for it?
(6,4” broad shoulders)
“Business papers” lmao!
just to note: the "business papers" pocket in the main compartment is for holding a hydration bladder (there's hole under the top handle to run the drinking hose through)
Wha!? I had no idea. I aint a bladder guy tho. Thanks, Jason!
hey, GR1 21L or 26L for EDC? am 5'7".
Yup, it also can hold steel weights that are used during the events that GORUCK puts on. I carry mine every day, so i put books in it, and the occasional water bladder too when camping. Love mine!
Would you consider maybe doing a video dedicated to packing cubes? Which brands are better, what fits in the different sizes, dimensions and so on.
I could, but know this - they're essentially all the same. I bought a bunch of different ones on amazon on while ago... all of them were the same. So, get a handful, they're not expensive, and just make the decision yourself based on what feels right to you.
What's the big green one in this video?
excuse me.... thats not green, its wasabi....... sorry, couldn't resist, the only thing i don't like about Tom Bihn is the name of their colors. if i asked you what color is Northwest Sky what would you say? Wrong! not blue, its gray, they have some diffrent jack wagon name for blue.
I would highly recommend the Patagonia Black Hole cubes, super awesome
Cheers!
"My uh... my papers.. uh business... my business papers." Classic!
Great video🤘🏻🇺🇸. Just upgraded from the gr1 to the gr2. Pretty much for the travel reasons and some extra gear. You’re video was big help!
+Tom Fennell dude, awesome to hear your notes on these. Thanks.
The 40l would have just allowed me to take things I might like to have but have made it many times without; the piorama a10 bag I use if I might need to check something on the return home (check it out)
An eagle creek tech (medium) packing cube fits the width and approximately half of the height in the 34 with the packing cube rotated.
How tall are you?
The Veneman 5’9
You could EASILY use the 26l GR1. You'd be better off, and then you have an EDC bag when you get there. That's the bag you need. There's so much of the GR2 you're not using. Why carry so much bag that you're not using? Get a GR1
The flag isn't backward. It's supposed to be like the flag worn on the shoulder of those in uniform which "assaulting forward" as if you were carrying a flag and running forward with it.
Okay, I am three years late to the party. Looking to buy this bag and this review had me dying laughing! LOVED IT! HAHAHAHA!
Excellent review. I my experience, there is GoRuck... and everything else that rates somewhere below it.
Could not decide between 34 vs 40. You helped me decide. Thanks man!
I also bought the 40L thinking "yeah, the extra space would be nice". As soon as it showed up, I returned it for the 34L.
Why? Huge-er than we think? 34L ok for a 2 week mostly city trip?
The backwards flag is for always striding forward. It is worn on the left shoulder for certain uniform.
Thanks for the reply, that's reassuring. Tom Bihn are doing a Synapse 25 in 1000D Cordura that I'm holding out for, that thing will be bomb proof
"Fill it with... sticks and stakes and.... rocks and shit...", HAHAHhAaHhAhaHhahA... I can't stop laughing!
love the review ! and your philosphy of travel :) i wish one day you could talk about the best coat to take for traveling
+Cameron Murdoch you could totally get patches onto this, Cameron.
hey man, big fan of your reviews here. Just wanted to give you a heads up that the links to "buy" the GR2 both redirect back to the video. Hopefully this hasn't cost you any kickback scrilla!
Love my 26L GR1. I'm thinking hard about the new GR3 but 45L seems like a lot. I'm 6'5" tho.
So you've reviewed a million bags. Can I ask what you would recommend for a college student? Need room for books, and enough organization for pens and stuff. I don't buy a GR1 but I was looking at osprey comet.
Im 6’2”, I bought the 40L, just so it fits my back better
Just ordered the GR3. Cant wait to get my hands on it.
Awesome review sir! You have helped me decide on getting the 34L. Keep the reviews coming!
Nice!
How has it worked for you? Enough for 2 weeks and to come back with a few small size souvenirs?
@@superseiyan Has worked great for me. I think it depends on how you are traveling for 2 weeks. For example, if taking a 2 week long trip and you know you can re-wash or re-use clothing, it would work out great. Otherwise it would be a perfect carryon companion bag to a duffle.
@11:21 that pocket is for the cast iron plates that we “feral people” haul around doing feral shit with lol. Great review man.
"There are... f.... four... lights!" LOL Thanks for the review. Keep up the great work.
nice work, chase. and solid dad-joke accents. looking forward to that trakke review - thinking about getting this combo for travel.
Who makes the large green packing cube? Great review that is spot on...
(minimal travel)
ua-cam.com/video/Hzb2FwSFqyQ/v-deo.html
Simon Kemp many thanks for the reply! I have seen the review from Bo, also great review, but again I am not sure if the 22lt space will be enough for 3-5 days! I'll ask Bo! Thanks again!
I just pre-ordered the GR2 34. These things are tough to find.
After watching the review, I just keep on coming back to this video tp listen for that Goruck Intro.
Marie kondo makes me wish I was a sweater. Great review. Wow she is a big bag! If it was just 20L bigger it could have 4 wheels and a motor and you could drive your luggage through the airport! Wouldn’t that be the nuts!
Great video! Thanks for helping me make a good decision
Chase, you should review 5.11 Rush 72 backpack
does it feel good on the back? which is your favourite bag ( for a world tour ? ) does theses bag that you describe also for girls?
Hey can you do a packing video? All of the stuff that you take with you on vacation.
I’m 5’2 and I love my 40L lol I remember watching this video when it came out….3 ish years later I just bought my 4th GoRuck bag. Thanks Chase you stated my GoRuck addiction lol
I’m 5,5 and just ordered the 34l! How does it feet on you the 40l?
Hey Chase, what exactly is your toiletry kit? The slim profile sounds interesting but can't find anything like looks like that online
Awesome review! Unfortunately I own the 40L. Can you review Evergoods Civic Panel Loader 24L?
Thanks!
Bro, you said you grew up in the bay as a punk and then moved to portland? You don't get more cali hipster than that.
Which one would you recommend? This one or the Outbreaker Backpack
Best review I've seen on the goruck GR2
Nice review. I will get the GR34L.
I already got the Minaal based on recommendations and don't need a new bag but I still end up watching your videos.
Amazing video!! Very thorough-super helpful!! 🙏
Hey Chase, thanks for this. It helped me set the stone and go with the GR2 34L. One thing: What is the name/brand of that big packing cube? Thanks bro! Just subscribed!
