Making a Custom Frame Bag for My New Bike - GDMBR Bike Prep

- Something slightly different today; I am making a custom frame bag for my new bike, this is done with the ultimate aim of bike-packing the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route (GDMBR), a 3,083.8 mile off-road bicycle touring route between Alberta, Canada and New Mexico, USA. I am planning on riding the trail later this year, please feel free to subscribe if you want to follow me in my preparation, and undertaking of this adventure.
I'm thinking of making my own frame bag as well and this video was absolutely perfect. Thanks for keeping the frustrated bits - I can see myself practicing deep breathing when making this bag as well. 😉
That's great! I'm glad my video will help. Any questions please get in touch. Stay calm! My sewing machine only just survived 🤣
After watching your video I almost thought about trying to make one myself. Then I thought it wasn't worth the frustration and ordered a Restrap. Pricey but very good quality.
I can see your logic. Even now I'd consider ordering one instead of making it. I need one for my new bike. I have to say that I love mine. It's held up well. Cheers 👍
Overall nice job. Good looking bag.
I would make only two suggestions. I use pins to hold the cloth together while sewing the seams. It makes it easier to keep them aligned. And, I always double sew all my seams. I've made a few projects over the years and two rows of seams always help keep the item together after extended use. Manufacturers have fancy machines that sew both rows at once.
Thanks for the tips. I'll be making another soon and will take your advice into account. Cheers 👍
Loved the video. Great tutorial. With some help from the wife, I finished making my first frame bag tonight. Turned out awesome and fits great. Keep up the great content.
Nice. Excellent work! This one is still holding up well. Cheers 👍
I like this video so much. I want to see my own framebag, but I don’t trust much in my skills. I understand what you felt, at your first try to put this 2 parts together. It’s so good, that you didn’t cut it out of the video. Greetings
Thanks for your comment. I tried to show how difficult it is for somebody like us with limited skills. It takes a lot of patience but it's very rewarding. I hope you have a try. Good luck!
Loved the video. No wonder these bags are so expensive when you buy retail…time and frustration!
Definitely!!! If you factor in the hours I put into making this it was quite expensive!! It's the satisfaction of using it, and the fact that it survived the entire GDMBR that makes it worth it. Cheers 👍
Hi Mat a great video , forget the superglue It's called Basting tape and it is used by canvas workers, very thin and narrow, it helps waterproof as well. Try One Sails in Levington or Solent Sew. Once you start using it its like cables ties or duct tape- You won't know how you lived without it!
I'll try to get some. Thanks for the tip.
Great video and I’ve just watched your GDMBR videos too which are also terrific and as others have commented the best parts are when you’re dealing with a real world frustration and get a bit , um, grumpy? As we all do. Too many “shiny happy faces” on vlogs these days. Leave that for Ryan VD and give us unedited frustration … that’s your lane and it’s perfect
That's good to hear. I'm trying to give a real world experience and I'm glad it's coming across as genuine. Cheers 👍
@@matryderadventures your videos are well edited too. Fun to watch. Love the humor. And comparing you to Ryan VD is meant as a complement, really enjoy his too. I hope to ride this route and might reach out for advice. Stay safe!!
I followed your video and am really pleased with the end product, I have some skills to learn sewing around corners but hey ho! I customised the dimensions to fit my bike!
Thanks for making and sharing!
I'm so pleased. It genuinely makes me happy to hear that. Thanks for letting me know. Sewing around the tight corners is an absolute nightmare. Cheers 👍👍
Well done, that frame bag looks great !!
Thanks.. it's held up well. Cheers 👍
Thanks for the tutorial! Really helped me make my frame bag :)
Those corners are rough though... I ended up starting over a few times and then cutting slits with the scissors one the strip only and it helped a lot!
Glad it helped 👍. I may try your technique on my next one. The corners are difficult and relief cuts would definitely help. I try to avoid having a sharp corner. It's nice once it's done though isn't it.
Very well done! Also nice video edit, I enjoyed the process :)
Wish you luck on adventures...
Cheers. Thanks for the feedback. 👍
Woo hoo, well done! I would love to do a project like that but I'd have to buy just about everything so I think in the long run it might be cheaper, for me, to buy a pre-made frame bag. Cheers and thanks for sharing.
Maybe?? I think you could buy a sewing machine and all of the equipment for about the same as a custom frame bag, then you can make all of your other bags too. I'm going to make my own dry bags when I get back.
@@matryderadventures Ya know ya might be right. $189us for a new Singer sewing machine HD. or $150us to buy the frame bag but if I have the machine I can make other cool stuff! ;
I feel your pain. I failed more times than I got it right but in time I improved. Keep up the great work and never give up.
Thanks for commenting. I really enjoy using the sewing machine but it can be frustrating. It's all worth it though.
Krásná práce, rád jsem se podíval, dávám odběr, jsem fanoušek
Děkuji 👍👍👍
🚴nice job👏
Cheers 👍
This video poped up in my feed virtually 30 minutes ago as I write this, and it was brilliant. Loved it. Your bag came out awesome. Now you've got me inspired to make my own for my Rowdy Roscoe 🙂 I had an idea whilst watching your video regarding the little flaps you glued back when making the hole for the zipper. Have you tried using som kind of super sticky doublesided tape for that? I imagine it would make that specific part of the job a whole lot easier. Just fold the fabric where you need to, stick the tape along the folding line and press down the little flap. Job done. Don't know if it'll work, I've rarely put my feet in a sewing machine, but an idea nevertheless. Love your channel 🤜🏼💥🤛🏼
That is a great idea. I'll try it when we make the next one. I need to pluck up the courage first! Rowdy Roscoe...great name. Good luck with making yours...
@@matryderadventures Thank you, Sir, I never would have even thought of going for it if it hadn't been for your video, so kudos for being an inspiration Mat :-) I'm exited for the proceedings. I made the template for the bag yesterday, I've defined the colour palette and the final design, and I've sourced the fabric and the thread needed for some robust stitching. Next is putting in an order to get cracking on it 🙂
It's called Basting tape and it is used by canvas workers, very thin and narrow, it helps waterproof as well.
@@sailingholsltd6062 Thank you, that's great input 🙂🙏🏼
Interesting. I'll have a look. Cheers 👍
Awesome job. Nice scissors by the way.
I'll get you a pair. Always run with them........ No, never run with them...I always get that wrong.
Enjoyed that and don’t even own a sewing machine.
Were you inspired to get one? They're very frustrating, but it is rewarding.
@@matryderadventures I would not go that far ;)
Excellent!! What stitching styles , gauge, and thread do you use to ensure no failures after loading/vibrating on the bike? Have you ever had to add seams or had issues? I learned alot and just wonder what your iterations have been like.
I used a heavy duty Gutermann Tera 40 (I think) and just a standard straight stitch (sorry, I don't know the terms). The frame bag held up perfectly and I haven't had to make any repairs.
Was the fan sent to the corner to think what he did wrong?? Beside the joke, great work!!
🤣🤣 yes it was. Firm but fair. Sadly it's still there....
Excellent job! I am also thinking of doing the GDMBR (but then probably in 2025). I'll be interested in following your progress. How are you planning to tackle the logistics (traveling to Banff and returning home from AW)?
Hi Ryk. I hope the GDMBR in 2025 works out for you. I'll confess that I haven't worked out the logistics yet. I held off until the new year as I wanted to make sure it can happen. Everything looks good so I'll be researching over the next few weeks and will schedule a firm date. I may do a video about it if you're interested. Thanks for the feedback.
@@matryderadventures Oh yes please.... a video would be great. Good luck!
Hello, What type of Velcros are those ?? I haven´t been abble to find them
I buy double sided velcro reels. They're thin but very strong.
Looks… intricate. How many hours in total would you reckon this took?
It took around 5 hours in total. I'm very much a novice so it could be done quicker. I'm very happy with it though. Definitely worth the effort.
🎉
👍 Thanks
Cheers 👍
I wish i had spare time to make stuff
Great video! How many yards of material did you get for this project?
I'll check when I get home. I can't quite remember. I think it was about three.
👍
It wouldn't suit your BMX I'm afraid.
@@matryderadventures it is very true
Wait, what? How did you get experience doing this kind of thing? What is your background and what was your profession?
I have little to no experience with sewing machines but this project is really not too difficult. It took quite a bit of time though. Thanks for following along 👍👍
Hi I'm about to make one of your bags for my brother. Could I please ask what size needle your using. Size of stitch and what type of thread. Thank you. Sue
Hi Sue. Sorry for the delay. We used Gutermann Tera 60 thread and a 90/14 needle. This was the needle that came with the machine. I'll add that these may not be the best choices but the frame bag has lasted. Good luck!!!
@@matryderadventures thanks so much for replying. I'll let you know how I get on. Waiting on the fabric to arrive then I'll get started 😁
I know you said it in the video but couldnt make it out - what material is this?
(And where did you get it?)
It's called Xpac VX21. You can buy it on eBay. It's good stuff to work with, waterproof and not expensive. Cheers 👍
what's the cost different. here in Phoenix arizona at REI STORE are very expensive starting. 120 and up
I am not sure of the exact cost as I bought material in bulk, I would guess around 20% of an equivalent store bought frame bag though, and obviously making a custom one has the advantage of sizing it to your frame, so no wasted space.
where did you pick up the chalk pen from ?
It was a tiny local sewing shop. I can't remember what it's called but can check. I'll get back to you..
You made that look easy !
Great British Sewing Bee 🪡🧵🐝 here we come ! Impressive 😊
I am not a cycle enthusiast, but I like bags, make up bags in particular, with pockets, lots of pockets. Can you make them? 😍
I can only make triangular makeup bags if that's any good 🤣
