Best install clip out..very simple instructions..legend
The best how-to video I have seen in a long time Thanks
& it was one of my most rushed video 🤣 I had to install it & film it before the workshop shut. Hence why the last bit was filmed outside 🤣
Thanks mate going to try to do mine next week
👍👍thanks for easy explain how to fit
I was very rushed to film it but hopefully it helps people 👍
It will watch one more will be good
Nice one! We love ours.
Thanks for the info easy to follow, I’m replacing an older controller with a redarc tow pro , the wiring is the same so was just going to connect the wires to them same colours to the old controller,I can’t find a suitable place to bolt the unit to on my 06 100 series Fte any tips appreciated ,Alan.
Normally I pull the dash apart looking everywhere. You only need a single bolt that you can attach a bracket to. Check behind the glove box aswell
Hey man, great vid thanks!
Love these vids man
I hope it helps some people out 👍
Fantastic video mate. Really well done. I have a 79 duel cab. 2022 model. Would I be best running down the back to brake light? Cheers
Cheers mate 👍 yep all the new Toyota's you have to pick up from the back now unfortunately. They are getting too smart for their own good lol. At least you know you won't have any issues picking up from the back. If you pick up from the brake pedal it interferes with Toyota safety sense & you get codes
@@Campingdownunder thanks heaps for the reply mate. Where have you found the best place to mount in a 79
@JamesEastham it's been a while but it was either under the dash to the side of the steering wheel or on the kick panel. Find a bolt that gives you enough room to fabricate a custom bracket to mount to it
Great video.
My ute already has a wire in pin 5, also can you pick up the brake light from the trailer plug as well to gor back to the controller?
Most new cars already have a wire in pin 5 but if you follow the loom back a meter or so you'll see it's not connected to anything. Yes you can tap straight onto the brake wire at the trailer plug for the brake pick up wire
Hi, Great video. I have installed a Spectrum-2 into my 2013 Triton. I ran a twin cable from the controller to the back and picked up the brake light source from the 7 pin tow plug which then goes back to the controller and the other lead of the twin cable goes back to the tow plug to be the connection to the trailer. I have seen a video where a diode is added in to prevent the brake controller from feeding current back to the ecu''s when the controller is activated. Do you have advise or comment or guidance on this, please?
If your picking up a brake signal from the 7 pin plug then it's already past the trailer harness ecu and won't be affected by the electric brake controller. It's only a signal wire to trigger the brake controller. The output of the brake controller runs to pin 5
I did more research and found an installation guide for another brand controller. On that, it is indicated that vehicles fitted with safety assist systems may require the inclusion of a diode to prevent feedback. You are correct. Thanks
Great video. I want to put a brake controller on a Tesla model Y. Is/will there be a harness available for this model please? Big Redarc fan.
Ooh that's a hard one lol. You'll have to reach out to the experts at redarc and they'll be able to advise you on the best solution for your car 👍
I got one im not sure the unit all they say it is I’ll update once i switch to disc brakes but it be great for Patriots im not sold on real RVs
Will this work for towing a motorcycle camping trailer with a motorcycle?Let me know please
You need to find out if your trailer needs electric brakes
Hi I’m putting one of these red arc in my truck which is a JMC N800 a Chinese truck which currently has a Hayman Reece controller which I’m not happy with. My truck is used to tow my 5th wheeler. There is a distance of approximately 6mt to the trailer plug what size wire would you recommend from the battery to the controller wiring and then from the wiring harness to the trailer plug.
I had one of the older red arc in my old tug and absolutely loved it. The truck is very basic the battery is about 3mt from where I’ll be putting the unit.
Typically you'd run 5mm. But I'd suggest ringing the redarc helpline and ask them. I've never fitted one to a truck sorry
I’m needing to upgrade to a newer setup . Have the HR knee knocker brack controller already and want to rip that out and go with Redarc (Have their SBI12 for dual battery setup in my N70 Hilux .
So when I install the tow pro pack v3 or the elite ? There’s the old rule avoid running excess power lengths around engine bay ? And avoid power wiring from excess heat ?
So my main fire wall grommet if seriously full -
Uhf antenna cord
UHF power and earth - crank battery
Aux Power cords x3(includes Anderson plug) from dual battery
Bull bar light bat switch wiring
Rear work lights switch wiring .
So only other grommet left is the one on the right side .
Which way would u run the power ? Straight across fire wall below windscreen or do a whole lap around engine bay ?
Can these connect to the Aux / 2nd battery or needs to be crank battery for reliability and redarc’s requirements (as per instructions and for warranty ?
TIA
Really doesn't matter which way you run the wiring. Just choose the safest direction to run it. Yes always connect the brake controller to the cranking battery 👍
Great video. I'm looking at installing one of these myself soon. Does the factory/standard service brakes blue wire in the trailer plug get REMOVED and REPLACED from the trailer plug and with the Tow Pro blue wire? So the factory service brakes blue wire becomes not required ?
Depending on your vehicle you can actually connect onto the blue wire about a meter back from the trailer plug in the trailer plug wiring. If you can't find it then yes remove the factory blue wire from the trailer plug & run the blue wire from the brake controller directly into pin 5 on the trailer plug
Is there any logic as to why Redarc would use black for positive and white for ground? I'm picturing myself (or the next owner) several years down the road looking at these wires thinking it's wired incorrectly. Maybe all brake controllers do this, this will be my first foray into trailer brake controllers, but why not just use the same color standard as everything else? I feel bad for the poor guy that doesn't read the instructions and wires this up like literally any other 12V accessory they've thrown on their rig!
Lol yes it is strange but they do have a tag on the positive wire stating its positive so you can't mix it up. I guess that wanted to make the brake switch wire red as it's still a positive input
@@Campingdownunder
Thanks for the video! Planning on doing the install tonight.
All Trailer wiring standards use White for Ground and Red for Brake Lamps. Blue is predominately Electric Brakes, depending on regions.
AS-2513 dictates that Black is for Reverse Lamps, but it is commonly used for Auxiliary power in international markets.
I was thinking exactly the same thing
International colour codes. Australia is slowly swapping over.
Can you take the brake signal from the trailer plug?
Yes I explained this in the video. In most new cars the safest place to pick it up is from the trailer plug
Thank you. Do you know how I would connect the electric trailer brake controller to the brake light switch? How do I know which wire to tie into, and where would be the easiest access point?
If it's an older car you can go off of the brake switch. Get a test light and test each wire to see which wire has 12v when you push the brake pedal and no power when it's not pushed
Hey Paul
I have an 2007 ford ranger and have purchased a redarc pro elite v3 and come with a std wire kit is this model likely to be straight forward as you mentioned that Rangers you should use there wiring harness
Not sure what year it was that Ford decided to make it harder to fit electric brakes sorry. You'd be best to ring redarc & confirm. But you used to be able to pick up the brake signal from the brake pedal but you can no longer pick up from the brake pedal anymore. Instead you have to pick up the signal from the trailer plug. But a phone call to redarc will confirm which year it all changed 👍
Good vid mate. I got my Redarc installed and didnt realise they would mount it on the center console (Next Gen Ford Everest).... I hate that position, and would have thought it would go onto the front dash near the lights area... thoughts on this placement? Prob cant pacth the hole they drilled in the dash hey?
I know with rangers they always put them in the centre. You can buy a new trim piece to replace it & move it next to the steering wheel if you have a blanking plug there free
What model Redarc for 2010 RAV4.. I'm leaning towards the Tow Pro ?
the towpro is the best on the market
I got a 99 prado will I need a special made harness or can I get away with just the one in the box?
Prado you should be right installing it without the kit & make your own wiring. Otherwise you could purchase the generic wiring loom from redarc
Hi, thanks for the video. I was just wondering why you wired to the brake light instead of the brake wire in the trailer plug?
It really doesn't matter which you pick up from. Even the redarc ready made kits pick up from the brake light
@@Campingdownunder was gonna ask the same question so thanks for that
@@Campingdownunder You have already discussed the situation where it does matter. If your vehicle has autonomous braking and cruise control features, you should fit a Diode (like the RedArc EBPK) and pull signal from the Brake Lamp.
RedArc make longer control cables for those who want to install their TowPro V3 at the back of the vehicle. You can use a standard Ethernet cable as the control cable for previous models of TowPro.
Hey mate, I have 2023 Isuzu MUX, what should I expect to be charged for an install of a brake controller. Do you still do installs, I’d be happy to give you the work if you’re keen for it.
Your best off going to your Isuzu dealer. They fit a genuine Isuzu harness designed by redarc to fit directly into the mux. They should only charge between 2-3 hours labour Max
Hi mate. Which battery do you hook up the controller too, if you have duel batteries and if your running an anderson plug to the rear to charge the battery in your van. Cheers Craig
Always the starter battery for electric breaks. If the fridge goes flat you want to make sure you always have electric brakes so always main battery 👍
Hi there, is the control box mounted horizontal or vertical? Or it doesn't really matter.
It doesn't matter which orientation the unit is mounted as long as it is securely mounted & can't move at all. It's very important that it can't move. In the next few weeks I'll be uploading a video where I asked redarc all questions relating to the tow pro elite 👍
@@Campingdownunder Great thanks for that.👍
I’m interested in installing this brake controller on my 2022 Nissan Frontier pro 4X do you have a complete kit for the installation? The truck comes with a 4 pin and 7 pin connector at the bumper. Please advise,
Dean.
Sorry you'll have to ask your local Nissan dealer if they make one to suit your car. Not every manufacturer makes a custom loom
So 4mm is plenty big enough to run to the trailer plug?
Yes it's only sending a signal to the trailers brakes telling them to activate
@@Campingdownunder Trailer Brakes draw power from this wire too. RedArc recommend a minimum 3mm² for supply power and Trailer brake power. This equates to a little bit over 5mm diameter cable, depending on the quality of cable. I use Narva 5816-xxBE, which has a cross section of 4.58mm² because 5815-xxBE only has a cross section of 2.90mm².
@CRUISEMASTER have a great video showing how important the correct cable is important for working electric brakesua-cam.com/video/8dt11D0am6Q/v-deo.html, especially on heavy trailers with multiple axles.
It is worth noting that Narva's range of 7-core trailer wiring only has one product that is compliant with AS-2513; Earth should be no less than 2.5mm² (just over 4mm in diameter). 5876-xxTC is overkill, but 5874-xxTC only has 1.85mm², which doesn't provide a compliant Earth.
That said, most trailers will not pull that much power, even with Brakes, Tail, Hazards and electric brakes, unless the manufacturer does something stupid like try to run a fridge through the 7-pin.
👍👍👍
Hey Paul, great video. Quick question. Do I need to use a diode when wiring up a tow pro to a 2022 Dmax? Cheers
We use the genuine dmax brake controller kit for the new Dmax. You can pick it up from your local dealer
The genuine loom plugs directly into the towbar loom & picks up the brake signal & sends power to pin 5 on the trailer plug. Very easy kit to fit
Cheers mate. So does this loom have a diode to stop voltage feeding back through the brake light? Or does the tow pro 3 have one built in? Thank you
The factory tow bar harness already has a built-in plug that's designed to plug directly into the genuine Isuzu/redarc electric brake kit. There's no need to worry about any diodes. It's all plug & play
Can you pull the trigger power supply off the brake pedal switch. How come you pull it from a brake light
I pulled it from there as I did want voltage drop from the rear to the front.
On older cars you can but now a lot of the newer cars it's impossible & can cause big issues. That's why it's safer to pick it up from the rear. It's only a trigger wire so you don't need to be concerned about voltage drop as long as you are using the recommended wiring size
It's a gu patrol. All good the more I thought about it, the more your way convinced me. I will re wire it tomorrow after work, good job thanks for the feedback.
Hi we har a red arc battery isolater and electric brakes fitted on my 2022 ssanyong Rexton ultimate and now my passenger indicator light is on solid when car is locked up any ideas on what may be wrong ?????
No I don't sorry. They have really messed something up. You'll have to take it back and demand they fix the issue free of charge
@@Campingdownunder thanks yes going back tomorrow hopefully they sort it ...thanks for the reply
If you have an existing knee knocker,
elec brake controller can I simply use the blue, black, red and white wires that the redarc requires?
I've fitted hundreds of tow pros but never any other brands sorry so I can't confirm their wiring. You could always test the existing wires and make sure it's at least 4mm wiring. But the safest thing to do is just replace the entire wiring so you know everything is safe and even the fuse is adequate
Do you need a wiring harness for 2013 Colorado Dual cab?
I would shoot redarc an email to confirm but I wouldn't think so
3:25 Why are we soldering the negative and positive together ? Sounds disastrous !
Not actually together. I'm talking about the positive from the twin core & the positive on the brake controller. Same with the negative wiring
@@Campingdownunder AHA ! Cheers, should they be connected to power 24/7 at battery, I know it's a lot tougher finding other power sources these days (like ignition or accessory. There is a lot of vids out there but most of them are useless.
Electric brakes should only ever be connected directly to the battery through a fuse. Never throw ignition or accessories
@@Campingdownunder - as a noob finding info on some subjects is difficult.
Could you tell me if a 1400kg trailer with electric brakes is required to have a handbrake.
I'm not sure on trailer rules sorry
Clear but didn't say where you put the controller module
It's different on every car. I tried to explain that in the video. I showed you how to mount it. I couldn't get my camera right up inside the dash
🍻🍻🍻
Had nothing but trouble with it
Sorry to hear that. Redarc are the most reliable brand out so I'm surprised to hear you've had trouble. I fit these every week and never had any dramas in the hundreds of units I've fitted
@adventureCampingdownunder
They do fail
Guess I was the lucky one
Where does the blue wire attached to?
Blue wire needs to end up in pin 5 on your trailer plug at the rear. That's the output wire which sends the signal to the trailer telling it to brake
@@Campingdownunder Roger that! the van we brought has the 7 pin round plug. thanks for your help, great video, its good how you staged every step, 👍
@@aaronmiller2466 keep in mind that some Vans may have non-standard wiring, especially if they are imported from Europe or are built by regressive local companies. Make sure your trailer is wired as per AS-2513 and does not have 12V auxiliary power running through the 7-pin. Have an Automotive Electrician add an Anderson Plug or replace your 7-pin with a AS-2513 compliant 12-pin, depending on your requirements.
I fitted a Bendix. Very dissapointed. Either on or off. Their customer support is zero.
how much wire thickness pls?
I mentioned in the video you use 4mm twin core wire
Is the wire 4mm or 4mm2?
4mm twin core
Junk it’s ok maybe for dinky toys
It's actually the best on the market & Australian made sorry mate. I've fitted hundreds of them. The only time people have issues with them is if they've been installed incorrectly
